• Data Movement and the Decision Matrix

  Maybe it’s my military background, or maybe I’ve always had this predilection, but I like to use two devices when I need to make a complex decision: A checklist and a decision matrix. I like to use a checklist because it ensures that I remember the big bits of what I need to do, and brings up questions or areas that I didn’t think about when evaluating options for the decision. And the decision matrix – that’s the thing I use to actually lay out those options. It’s simply a spreadsheet-like grid (I use Excel, but paper and pencil works as well) that lays out the requirements or advantages for the decision across the top, and the options I have on the left-hand side. Then in the “cells” I put whether or not that option on the left will meet the requirement in that column. I then simply “weight” each cell to organize the choices by best-fit. The right answer (or answers) will float right to the top. I was asked yesterday about options for moving data in SQL Server to another system. There are just dozens of ways to do this, from bcp to Replication, each with certain advantages and costs. But asking the questions for the top row first helped me show the person that it isn’t a particular technology that is important, it’s laying out those requirements and thinking about which elements are more important than the other. For instance, is it more important to have the data moved all the time, or is it OK if that happens once in a while? Does the data have to move in two directions or just one? All of these will help that answer jump right out. Try it sometime – it’s a great learning exercise, since it will force you to focus on filling out the matrix. The answer is out there, Neo. • The year ahead, 2011.

  When I look back at last years look at 2010 my blogging rate has not changed much (I suspect this is largely down to using Twitter a lot) but my interests this year have developed a lot further. My view on 2010 would be that Microsoft would commit more to OSS, while I wanted to see more hires from that audience and more projects on Outercurve foundation instead there has been support for JQuery and Gems (aka NuGet). I would love to see more from Microsoft on the OSS front in 2011, Outercurve could become like the Apache foundation with enough support. Staying on the Microsoft front I predict that 2011 will bring the following. C# 5.0 will go RTM (still no MOP though) The next release of VS will go alpha or early beta MS MVC 4.0 (I think by Mix time) and maybe this release will get a command line. I also suspect that Microsoft will want to target the tablet market with WP7 in 2011 (Mix 2011 maybe...). I also predict the following Java will fork with Apache\Google. Oracle will then take them to court and the whole thing will boil right through 2011 (Java have had enough court cases, come on guys). Java and the JVM will sadly not move forward at all in 2011. Android will cause Apple a serious headache, both the smartphone and tablet market will see figures cut from Apple share. By the end of 2011 the current 70% apple market share will be 40-50%. As the features, performance and price of Android devices gets ever better Apple will be left out in the open. Lastly after 7 years I intend to move this blog away from weblogs. In 2011 I will be exploring Java, Ruby\Rails and Android and such subjects don't make sense to talk about it here. See you in 2011.

• Can't install Ubuntu, black screen after install

  I tried several times, but wasn't able to make it work. I tried all recent types of Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I tried acpi=off at the beginning of the installation. In this way I could finish the installation. But after the restart Ubuntu didn't work. Only a black screen appeared. Before that I tried it on the VirtualBox and it work. • Tracking feature requests for small-scale components

  I'm curious how other development teams (especially those that work in moderate to large development groups) track "future" features/wishlists for functionality for internally developed frameworks or components. I know the standard advice is that a development team should find one good tool for tracking bugs/features and use that for everything and I agree with that if the future requests are for the product itself. In my company we have an engineering department, which is broken up into multiple groups and within each there can be one to several agile teams. The bug tracking product we use has been "a leader since 1997" (their UI/usability seems to also be evaluated against that year even today) but my agile team or even group doesn't really control what is being used by the whole department. What we are looking to track is not necessarily product features but expansion/nice to have functionality for internal components that go into our product. So to name a few for example... framework/utility library on top of CppUnit which our developers share low-level IPC communications framework Common development SDK that myself and several other team leads started to help share some common code/tools at the department-wide level (this SDK is released as internal "product" to each of the groups). Is the standard practice to use the one bug tracking tool? Or would it make more sense to setup something more localized specifically for our needs and maintain it ourselves? It's also unclear how management will feel if developers start performing "IT" roles of maintaining software and servers. At the same time, right now, we use excel files, internal wiki and MS OneNote for this kind of stuff and that just doesn't feel right. (I'm afraid to ask for actual software recommendations, since that might make this question more localized or something. Also developers needs this way more than management, so it would be nice to find something either free or no more than the cost of a happy hour).

  I'm an amateur programmer. I'd like to develop a software application (like Tradestation), to analyse real-time market data. Please teach me if the following approach is correct, ie the procedures, knowledge or software needed etc: Use a DB to read the real-time feed from data provider: what should be the right DB to use? I know it should be a time serious one. Can I use SQL, Mysql, or others? What database can receive real-time data feed? Do I need to configure the DB to do this? If the real-time data is in ASCII form, how can it be converted to those that can be read by the DB and my application? Should I have to write codes or just use some add-ins? What kind of add-in are needed? How should I code the program to retrieve the changing data from the DB so that the analysis software screen data can also change asynchronously? (like the RTD in excel) Which aspects of programming do I need to learn to develop the above? Are there web resources/ books I can refer to for more information?

• "Oracle Coherence 3.5" Book - My Humble Review

    After reviewing the book in more detail I say again that it is a great guide for sure. Lots of important concepts that sometimes can be somewhat confusing are deeply reviewed, including all types of caching schemes and backing maps, and the cache topologies with their corresponding performances and very useful "When to use it?" sections. Some functionalities that are very desirable or used a lot are reviewed with examples and best practices of implementation, including: Data affinity Querying Pagination Indexes Aggregations Event processing, listening and triggering Data persistence Security Regarding the networking and architecture topics, Coherence*Extend is exhaustively reviewed, including C++ and .NET clients, with very good tips and examples, even including source codes. Personally, I am also glad to see that the address providers (<address-provider> tag), new feature in Coherence 3.5 which is a way to programmatically provide well-known addresses in order to connect to the cluster, is mentioned on the book, because it provides new functionalities to satisfy some special configuration requirements for example: Provide a way to switch extend nodes in cases of failure Implement custom load balancing algorithms and/or dynamic discovery of TCP/IP connection acceptors Dynamically assign TCP address and port settings when binding to a server socket Another very interesting and useful section is the "Coherent Bank Sample Application", which is a great tutorial, useful to understand how Coherence interacts with third party products establishing a clear integration with them, including the use of non-Oracle products like MS Visual Studio.

• both IPV4 and IPV6 at the same time over DSL connection?

  Let me describe my situation: while I connect computer with the wire, I've got an IPV6 address automatically, there's a "Wired connection" tab in network manager, and I can access an website that support IPV6 (google,facebook,twitter...)with a hosts file, or use the proxy like google.com.sixxs.org But if I want to access the whole internet, I have to create a DSL connection with username and password that ISP gave me. BUT after I change my connection into this DSL connection, I cannot access website over IPV6, even there's the site's ipv6 address in /etc/hosts, then I realize that I lose my IPV6 connection, because the ping6 says connect: Network is unreachable. the problem is, there's no IPV6 tab or options about IPV6 in the configure of DSL connection. It feels like I can only use one connection at the same time, but the DSL doesn't support IPV6 and the wired connection doesn't support IPV4(I mean, there's no way to input the password the ISP gave me) maybe make somebody uncomfortable, but when I work in MS windows, there's no such problem, (maybe just feel like) I can access V4 and V6 at the same time. So how to solve with this? thanks a lot. I'm in 11.10 + gnome3

• How to handle editing a large file for a non-technical user

  I have a client who is given a tab delimited .txt file containing hundreds of thousands of rows. I have a user story as follows: As a user I want to take the text file and add a new value at the end of each line which contains the concatenated value of two of the columns. for example if the file read text_one text_two I need to output the following (preferably to a .txt file) text_one text_two text_onetext_two My first approach was to ask the vendor supplying the file to do the concatenation before providing the file, the easiest way to solve a problem is to eliminate it right? however they are very uncooperative and have point blank refused. I've looked at building a simple javascript application that does this client side so a non-technical user could select the file using a file selector. This approach has a few problems The file could be over a GB in size and so can't be loaded straight into memory, I've tried and the browser crashes There is no means to write a file in javascript so I'd need to output the content to the screen and have the user save it (somehow) I was thinking if I could get around the filesize limitations I could just output the edited content to the page and have the user save the page as a .txt file, however I think there is a better way than using javascript that will still accommodate the users lack of technical know-how. Please consider this question to be stack agnostic, but bear in mind that a nice little shell script or python script would be deemed unsuitable for a non technical user unless there is a way of "packaging" it nicely for a non-technical user. Updates The file is too large to open in excel. The process needs to be run weekly, but it doesn't require scheduling or automation...(yet)

• scary islamic messages on mouse in libreoffice - a virus?

  This is weird. Today I opened an excel file with libre office. Suddenly I saw the mouse changed color, and stuck to it was a message in Arabic, which changed every second in a loop. I can actually read Arabic so I immediatly recognized it as Islamic messages praising Allah (including the Takbir). Here's a screenshot: At first I thought this was something with the file, but then I saw that this happens with any libre office program (but only libre-office programs), and even when they're open, it only changes the mouse when it's hovering over the libre program, and goes back to normal anywhere else. Also, re-installing did not help. I tried running software updater - but I got an error where it couldn't load some steam repositories, but that seems like a coincidence: Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en_US Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en Here's another hint - I tried taking several screenshots of several messages, but they all ended up showing the same message (the one above). I should note I haven't installed anything fishy lately, and I hardly ever use libre office at all (I prefer Google Drive whenever I need to work with documents), so I'm really unsure as to how this happened. Anyway, this is scary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Multiplayer Network Game - Interpolation and Frame Rate

  Consider the following scenario: Let's say, for sake of example and simplicity, that you have an authoritative game server that sends state to its clients every 45ms. The clients are interpolating state with an interpolation delay of 100 ms. Finally, the clients are rendering a new frame every 15ms. When state is updated on the client, the client time is set from the incoming state update. Each time a frame renders, we take the render time (client time - interpolation delay) and identify a previous and target state to interpolate from. To calculate the interpolation amount/factor, we take the difference of the render time and previous state time and divide by the difference of the target state and previous state times: var factor = ((renderTime - previousStateTime) / (targetStateTime - previousStateTime)) Problem: In the example above, we are effectively displaying the same interpolated state for 3 frames before we collected the next server update and a new client (render) time is set. The rendering is mostly smooth, but there is a dash of jaggedness to it. Question: Given the example above, I'd like to think that the interpolation amount/factor should increase with each frame render to smooth out the movement. Should this be considered and, if so, what is the best way to achieve this given the information from above?

  Now that we have shown the EDMX with XPO/XAF and how use SpecFlow and BDD to run EasyTest scripts, let’s put it all together and show the evolution of a project using all the tools combined. I have a simple project that I use to track my priorities throughout the day.  It uses some of Stephen Covey’s principles from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  The idea is to write down all your priorities the night before and rank them.  This way when you get started tomorrow you will have your list of priorities.  Now it’s not that new things won’t appear tomorrow and reprioritize your list, but at least now you can track them.  My idea is to create a project that will allow you manage your list from your desktop, a web browser or your mobile device.  This way your list is never too far away.  I will layout the data model and the additional concepts as time progresses. My goal is to show the power of all of these tools combined and I thought the best way would be to build a project in sequence.  I have had this idea for quite some time so let’s get it completed with the outline below.   Hey folks~ Today was one of the most happening day for us, we got up @ 5 AM and did our daily morning chores and left hostel room by 5:35 AM. So why we got up so early??? Okay we planned a visit to Kali Temple at KaliGhat! So till everyone assembles, we took few pics on the Lake Deck. We left Joka campus at 6 AM and reached Kali temple at 6:50 AM. Kali temple is very famous in Kolkata, but the frankly speaking it’s one of the most unorganised one for sure~! After darshan, we got back into our Taxis and headed for breakfast at Gupta Brothers Restaurant. We enjoyed “doodh-jalebi”, “Kachori-sabzi” and rasogullas there~! While coming back, one of our Taxi’s excel broken and we waited for the first to come back and take us to Campus. After coming back to campus, we attended our sessions on IS & Strategy on ITC eChaupal and Transactional Cost and Vertical Integration(TCVI). After our classed we had “Dinner Party” organised by IIMC, and we enjoyed it thoroughly, and many of us took this as an opportunity to share our biz card and talk to Professors. • Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

  Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. • Is learning how to use C (or C++) a requirement in order to be a good (excellent) programmer?

  When I first started to learn how to program, real programmers could write assembly in their sleep. Any serious schooling in computer science would include a hefty bit of training and practice in programming using assembly. That has since changed, to the point where I see Computer Science degrees with assembly, if included at all, is relegated to one assignment, and one chapter, for a total of two weeks' work out of 4 years' schooling. C/C++ programming seems to have followed a similar path. I'm no longer surprised to interview university graduates who have not spent more than two weeks programming in C++, and have only read of C in a book somewhere. While the most serious CS degrees still seem to include significant time learning and using one or both of the languages, the trend is clearly towards less enforced C/C++ in school. It's clearly possible to make a career producing good work without ever reading or writing a single line of C or C++ code. Given all of that, is learning the two languages worth the effort? Are they at all required to excel? (beyond the obvious, non-language specific advice, such as "a good selection of languages is probably important for a comprehensive education", and "it's probably a good idea to keep trying out and learning new languages throughout a programmers' career, just to stretch the gray cells")

  Microsoft released a PILE of Visual Studio goodness today: Visual Studio 2010 SP1(Including TFS SP1) Finally done with remembering which GDR packs, KB Patches, etc need to be installed with a new VS/TFS 2010 deployment.  Just grab the SP1.  It’s available today for MSDN Subscribers and March 10th for public download. TFS-Project Server Integration Feature Pack MSDN Subscribers got another little treat today with the TFS-Project Server integration feature pack.  We can now get project rollups and portfolio level management with Project Server yet still have the tight developer interaction with TFS.  Finally we can make the PMO happy without duplicate entry or MS Project gymnastics. Visual Studio Load Test Feature Pack This is a new benefit for Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate subscribers.  Previously there was a limit to Ultimate Load Testing of 250 virtual users. • The Bing Sting - an alternative opinion

  I know I'm a bit of an MS fanboy at times, but please, am I missing something here? Microsoft, with permission of users, exploits clickstream data gathered by observing user behaviour. One use for this data is to improve Bing queries. Google equips twenty of its engineers with laptops and installs the widgets required to provide Microsoft with clickstream data. It then gets their engineers to repeatedly (I assume) type in 'synthetic' queries which bring back 'doctored' hits. It asks its engineers to then click these results (think about this!). So, the behaviour of the engineers is observed and the resulting clickstream data goes off to Microsoft. It is processed and 'improves' Bing results accordingly.   What exactly did Microsoft do wrong here?   Google's so-called 'Bing sting' is clearly a very effective attack from a propaganda perspective, but is poor practice from a company that claims to do no evil. Generating and sending clickstream data deliberately so that you can then subsequently claim that your competitor 'copied' that data from you is neither fair nor reasonable, and suggests to me a degree of desperation in the face of real competition.   Monopolies are undesirable, whether they are Microsoft monopolies or Google monopolies.    Personally, I'm glad Microsoft has technology in place to observe user behaviour (with permission, of course) and improve their search results using such data. I can only assume Google doesn't implement similar capabilities. Sounds to me as if, at least in this respect, Microsoft may offer the better technology.
