    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
This Saturday, during the Ohio State-Nebraska game halftime, the Ohio State University marching band paid tribute to decades of popular video games in an impressively choreographed 10 minute show. The video starts off a little shaky, but once the crowd settles down to watch the show things get significantly smoother. How many of the games do you recognize? • SQL SERVER – NTFS File System Performance for SQL Server

    - by pinaldave
Note: Before practicing any of the suggestion of this article, consult your IT Infrastructural Admin, applying the suggestion without proper testing can only damage your system. Question: “Pinal, we have 80 GB of data including all the database files, we have our data in NTFS file system. We have proper backups are set up. Any suggestion for our NTFS file system performance improvement. Our SQL Server box is running only SQL Server and nothing else. Please advise.” When I receive questions which I have just listed above, it often sends me deep thought. Honestly, I know a lot but there are plenty of things, I believe can be built with community knowledge base. Today I need you to help me to complete this list. I will start the list and you help me complete it. NTFS File System Performance Best Practices for SQL Server Disable Indexing on disk volumes Disable generation of 8.3 names (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLE8DOT3 1) Disable last file access time tracking (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 1) Keep some space empty (let us say 15% for reference) on drive is possible (Only on Filestream Data storage volume) Defragement the volume Add your suggestions here… The one which I often get a pretty big debate is NTFS allocation size. I have seen that on the disk volume which stores filestream data, when increased allocation to 64K from 4K, it reduces the fragmentation. Again, I suggest you attempt this after proper testing on your server. Every system is different and the file stored is different. Here is when I would like to request you to share your experience with related to NTFS allocation size. If you do not agree with any of the above suggestions, leave a comment with reference and I will modify it. Please note that above list prepared assuming the SQL Server application is only running on the computer system. The next question does all these still relevant for SSD – I personally have no experience with SSD with large database so I will refrain from comment. • Texture mapping on gluDisk

    - by Marnix
I'm trying to map a brick texture on the edge of a fountain and I'm using gluDisk for that. How can I make the right coordinates for the disk? My code looks like this and I have only found a function that takes the texture along with the camera. I want the cubic texture to be alongside of the fountain, but gluDisk does a linear mapping. How do I get a circular mapping? void Fountain::Draw() { glPushMatrix(); // push 1 this->ApplyWorldMatrixGL(); glEnable(GL_TEXTURE_2D); // enable texturing glPushMatrix(); // push 2 glRotatef(90,-1,0,0); // rotate 90 for the quadric // also drawing more here... // stone texture glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, texIDs[0]); glTexParameteri(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MIN_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameteri(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_MAG_FILTER, GL_LINEAR); glTexParameteri(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_S, GL_REPEAT); glTexParameteri(GL_TEXTURE_2D, GL_TEXTURE_WRAP_T, GL_REPEAT); glPushMatrix(); // push 3 glTranslatef(0,0,height); // spherical texture generation // this piece of code doesn't work as I intended glTexGeni(GL_S, GL_TEXTURE_GEN_MODE, GL_SPHERE_MAP); glTexGeni(GL_T, GL_TEXTURE_GEN_MODE, GL_SPHERE_MAP); glEnable(GL_TEXTURE_GEN_S); glEnable(GL_TEXTURE_GEN_T); GLUquadric *tub = gluNewQuadric(); gluQuadricTexture(tub, GL_TRUE); gluDisk(tub, radius, outerR, nrVertices, nrVertices); gluDeleteQuadric(tub); glDisable(GL_TEXTURE_GEN_S); glDisable(GL_TEXTURE_GEN_T); glPopMatrix(); // pop 3 // more drawing here... glPopMatrix(); // pop 2 // more drawing here... glPopMatrix(); // pop 1 } To refine my question a bit. This is an image of what it is at default (left) and of what I want (right). The texture should fit in the border of the disk, a lot of times. If this is possible with the texture matrix, than that's fine with me as well.

  • SQL Server 2008 Compression

    - by Peter Larsson
Hi! Today I am going to talk about compression in SQL Server 2008. The data warehouse I currently design and develop holds historical data back to 1973. The data warehouse will have an other blog post laster due to it's complexity. However, the server has 60GB of memory (of which 48 is dedicated to SQL Server service), so all data didn't fit in memory and the SAN is not the fastest one around. So I decided to give compression a go, since we use Enterprise Edition anyway. This is the code I use to compress all tables with PAGE compression. DECLARE @SQL VARCHAR(MAX)   DECLARE curTables CURSOR FOR             SELECT 'ALTER TABLE ' + QUOTENAME(OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME(object_id))                     + '.' + QUOTENAME(OBJECT_NAME(object_id))                     + ' REBUILD PARTITION = ALL WITH (DATA_COMPRESSION = PAGE)'             FROM    sys.tables   OPEN    curTables   FETCH   NEXT FROM    curTables INTO    @SQL   WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0     BEGIN         IF @SQL IS NOT NULL             RAISERROR(@SQL, 10, 1) WITH NOWAIT           FETCH   NEXT         FROM    curTables         INTO    @SQL     END   CLOSE       curTables DEALLOCATE  curTables Copy and paste the result to a new code window and execute the statements. One thing I noticed when doing this, is that the database grows with the same size as the table. If the database cannot grow this size, the operation fails. For me, I first ended up with orphaned connection. Not good. And this is the code I use to create the index compression statements DECLARE @SQL VARCHAR(MAX)   DECLARE curIndexes CURSOR FOR             SELECT      'ALTER INDEX ' + QUOTENAME(name)                         + ' ON '                         + QUOTENAME(OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME(object_id))                         + '.'                         + QUOTENAME(OBJECT_NAME(object_id))                         + ' REBUILD PARTITION = ALL WITH (FILLFACTOR = 100, DATA_COMPRESSION = PAGE)'             FROM        sys.indexes             WHERE       OBJECTPROPERTY(object_id, 'IsMSShipped') = 0                         AND OBJECTPROPERTY(object_id, 'IsTable') = 1             ORDER BY    CASE type_desc                             WHEN 'CLUSTERED' THEN 1                             ELSE 2                         END   OPEN    curIndexes   FETCH   NEXT FROM    curIndexes INTO    @SQL   WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0     BEGIN         IF @SQL IS NOT NULL             RAISERROR(@SQL, 10, 1) WITH NOWAIT           FETCH   NEXT         FROM    curIndexes         INTO    @SQL     END   CLOSE       curIndexes DEALLOCATE  curIndexes When this was done, I noticed that the 90GB database now only was 17GB. And most important, complete database now could reside in memory! After this I took care of the administrative tasks, backups. Here I copied the code from Management Studio because I didn't want to give too much time for this. The code looks like (notice the compression option). BACKUP DATABASE [Yoda] TO              DISK = N'D:\Fileshare\Backup\Yoda.bak' WITH            NOFORMAT,                 INIT,                 NAME = N'Yoda - Full Database Backup',                 SKIP,                 NOREWIND,                 NOUNLOAD,                 COMPRESSION,                 STATS = 10,                 CHECKSUM GO   DECLARE @BackupSetID INT   SELECT  @BackupSetID = Position FROM    msdb..backupset WHERE   database_name = N'Yoda'         AND backup_set_id =(SELECT MAX(backup_set_id) FROM msdb..backupset WHERE database_name = N'Yoda')   IF @BackupSetID IS NULL     RAISERROR(N'Verify failed. Backup information for database ''Yoda'' not found.', 16, 1)   RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM    DISK = N'D:\Fileshare\Backup\Yoda.bak' WITH    FILE = @BackupSetID,         NOUNLOAD,         NOREWIND GO After running the backup, the file size was even more reduced due to the zip-like compression algorithm used in SQL Server 2008. The file size? Only 9 GB. //Peso

  • I Choose iNada

    - by Mark Treadwell
As a laptop and Kindle user, I have been looking at the usual cyclical Apple frenzy in the press with the same kind of amused tolerance I give my three-year-old son.  They never seem to learn, and they keep repeating the same things.  However when I ready articles like this, I am reminded that that is not always the case. I am a happy user of a monster-sized HP HDX laptop, HP touch screen all-in-one system, and multi-screen Dell desktops at home as well as a HP business laptop at work.  I have no iPod, iMac, iTouch or any other relationship with the company who wants to trademark the prefix “i”. I have not missed them. That is not to say that I have no technological gadgets.  I do.  They just do not dominate Every company wants to preserve their customer base, but Apple just does it too rigidly.  The buy-in necessary rubs me wrong.  When the fanboys scream about the next great iApple thing which will kill off another market segment (this time, the iPad will kill off laptops), the amused tolerance returns. From what I have seen, the iPad virtual keyboard is a poor substitute for an actual keyboard.  It was intended to let you get some kind of text into a device that is not really intended for keyboard input, but rather for touch manipulation of a designed interface.  I like the virtual keyboard on my LG Dare cell phone, but you will not catch me writing my next novel with it.  But, you hear, you can connect a real keyboard and get info from another computer.  That is when you realize that the iPad is not a true standalone device like a laptop.  You have to make more hardware purchases to get what you truly want.  It is an expensive accommodation to get you a different form of freedom. So if Apple made a product with me in mind, you can have it.  Everyone gets to make their own choice.  My choice is the iNada.

  • Change CSS EMs to Percentage Automatically.

    - by Zachary Brown
I cheated on a small site I was working on and used a site builder (Web Dwarf by Virtual Mechanics) to save time. I didn't realize it at the time, but this builder specifies the width, height and positions using CSS EMs. Is there an automated tool out there that will read through the CSS and convert each EM to a percentage so it will display correctly on wide screens as well? Any help would be great! Thanks. Here is the CSS: http://pastebin.de/14055

  • Apache on Windows - splitting vHost logs

    - by Cylindric
I have a Windows Server 2008 running Apache, and it will be hosting several virtual hosts. I'd rather not use the logrotate tool (|bin/logrotate), as it seems create significant extra overhead with all the processes. Is there a simple Windows alternative to get the log entries from a combined log file split into several per-site files? Preferably with custom output directories, but that is optional.

  • The role of the Infrastructure DBA

Do you have someone performing an Infrastructure DBA role within your organisation? Do you realise why today you now might need one? When I first started working with SQL Server there were three distinct roles in the SQL Server virtual team: developer , DBA and sysadmin . In my simple terms, the developer looked after the “code”: the schema, stored procedures, and any ETL to get data in, out or updated within the database. They could talk in business entity terms about Customer numbers, Product codes...(read more)
