• I'm a contract developer and I think I'm about to get screwed [closed]

  I do contract development on the side. You could say that I'm a contract developer? Considering I've only ever had one client I'd say that's not exactly the truth - more like I took a side job and needed some extra cash. It started out as a "rebuild our website and we'll pay you $10k" type project. Once that was complete (a bit over schedule, but certainly not over budget), the company hired me on as a "long term support" contractor. The contract is to go from March of this year, expiring on December 31st of this year - 10 months. Over which a payment is to be paid on the 30th of each month for a set amount. I've been fulfilling my end of the contract on all points - doing server maintenence, application and database changes, doing huge rush changes and pretty much just going above and beyond. Currently I'm in the middle of development of an iPhone mobile application (PhoneGap based) which is nearing completion (probably 3-4 weeks from submission). It has not been all peaches and flowers though. Each and every month when my paycheck comes due, there always seems to be an issue of sorts. These issues did not occur during the initial project, only during the support contract. The actual contract states that my check should be mailed out on the 30th of the month. I have received my check on time approximately once (on time being about 2-3 days within the 30th). I've received my paycheck as late as the 15th of the next month - over two weeks late. I've put up with it because I need the paycheck. There have been promises and promises of "we'll send it out on time next time! I promise" - only to receive it just as late the next month. When I ask about payment they give me a vibe like "why are you only worried about money?" - unfortunately I don't have the luxury of not worrying about money. The last straw was with my August payment, which should have been mailed on August 30th. I received it on September 12th. The reason for the delay? "USPS is delaying it man! we sent it out on the 1st!" is the reason I got. When I finally got the check in the mail, the postage on the envelope was marked September 10th - the date it was run through the postage machine. I've been outright lied to, at this point. I carry on working, because again - I need a paycheck. I orchestrated the move of our application to a new server, developed a bunch of new changes and continued work on the iPhone app. All told I probably went over my hourly allotment (I'm paid for 40 hours a month, I probably put in at least 50). On Saturday, the 1st, I gave the main contact at the company (a company of 3, by the way - this is not some big corporation) a ring and filled him in on the status of my work for the past two weeks. Unusually I hadn't heard from him since the middle of September. His response was "oh... well, that is nice and uh.. good job. well, we've been talking within the company about things and we've certainly got some decisions ahead of us..." - not verbatim but you get the idea (I hope?). I got out of this conversation that the site is not doing very well (which it's not) and they're considering pulling the plug. Crap, this contract is going to end early - there goes Christmas! Fine, that's alright, no problem. I'll get paid for the last months work and call it a day. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten last months check, and I'm getting dicked around now. "Oh.. we had problems transferring funds, we'll try and mail it out tomorrow" and "I left a VM with the finance guy, but I can't get ahold of him". So I'm getting the feeling I'm not getting paid for all the work I put in for September. This is obviously breach of contract, and I am pissed. Thinking irrationally, I considered changing all their passwords and holding their stuff hostage. Before I think it through (by the way, I am NOT going to do this, realized it would probably get me in trouble), I go and try some passwords for our various accounts. Google Apps? Oh, I'm no longer administrator here. Godaddy? Whoops, invalid password. Disqus? Nope, invalid password here too. Google Adsense / Analytics? Invalid password. Dedicated server account manager? Invalid password. Now, I have the servers root password - I just built the box last week and haven't had a chance to send the guy the root password. Wasn't in a rush, I manage the server and they never touch it. Now all of a sudden all the passwords except this one are changed; the writing is on the wall - I am out. Here's the conundrum. I have the root password, they do not. If I give them this password all the leverage I have is gone, out the door and out of my hands. During this argument of why am I not getting paid the guy sends me an email saying "oh by the way, what's the root username and password to the server?". Considering he knows absolutely nothing, I gave him an "admin" account which really has almost no rights. I still have exclusive access to the server, I just don't know where to go. I can hold their data hostage, but I'm almost positive this is the wrong thing to do. I'd consider it blackmail, regardless of whether or not I have gotten paid yet. I can "break" something on the server and give them the whole "well, if you were paying me I could fix it!" spiel. This works from a "well he's not holding their stuff hostage" point of view, but what stops them from hiring some one else to just fix the issue at hand? For all I know the guys nephew is a "l33t hax0r" and can figure it out for free. I can give in, document as much as I can and take him to small claims court. This is breach of contract, I'm not getting paid. I have a case, right? ???? Does anyone have any experience in this? What can I do? What are my options? I'm broke, I can't afford a lawyer and I can barely afford not getting this paycheck. My wife doesn't work (I work two jobs so she doesn't have to work - we have a 1 year old) and is already looking at getting a part time job to cover the bills. Long term we'll be fine, but this has pissed me off beyond belief! Help me out, I'm about to get screwed.

• touchend event doesn't work on Android

  Hi, I've just started looking at doing some basic mobile web development on the android and an writing a test script to investigate the touch events. I've run the following code in the android emulator, and the touchend event never gets fired. Can anyone tell me why ? I've tried in three versions of the emulator (1.6, 2.1 and 2.2) and all three behave in the same way. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. • Microsoft SyncFramework - Sync different tables into one

  Hello, we are trying to get the Microsoft SyncFramework running in our application to synchronize an oracle db with a mobile device. Problem The queries that we need to gather the data on the oracle db take much time (and we haven't found a way to speed them up yet), so we try to split them up in as much portions as possible. One big part of the whole problem is, that we need different information out of one big table, that bloats a query if combined. Unfortunately, the SyncFramework allows only one TableAdapter per SyncTable. Now this is a problem for our application: If we were able to use more than one TableAdapter per SyncTable, we could easily spread the queries in a more efficient way. Using one query per Table which combines all the needed data takes way too much time. Ideas I thought of creating different TableAdapters for each one of the required queries and then merge the resulting datasets afterwards (preferably on the server). This seems to work, but is a rather awkward solution. Does someone of you know a better solution? Or do you have some ideas that could help? • Issue with WIC image resizing on ASP.NET MVC 2

  I am attempting to implement image resizing on user uploads in ASP.NET MVC 2 using a version of the method found: here on asp.net. This works great on my dev machine, but as soon as I put it on my production machine, I start getting the error 'Exception from HRESULT: 0x88982F60' which is supposed to mean that there is an issue decoding the image. However, when I use WICExplorer to open the image, it looks ok. I've also tried this with dozens of images of various sources and still get the error (though possible, I doubt all of them are corrupted).   So I was working on this little javascript experiment and I needed a widget to track the FPS of it. I ported a widget I've been using with Actionscript 3 to Javascript and it seems to be working fine with Chrome/Safari but on Firefox is throwing an exception. This is the experiment: Depth of Field This is the error: [Exception... "An invalid or illegal string was specified" code: "12" nsresult: "0x8053000c (NS_ERROR_DOM_SYNTAX_ERR)" location: "http://mrdoob.com/projects/chromeexperiments/depth_of_field__debug/js/net/hires/debug/Stats.js Line: 105"] The line that is complaning about is this one: graph.putImageData(graphData, 1, 0, 0, 0, 69, 50); Which is a crappy code to "scroll" the bitmap pixels. The idea is that I only draw a few pixels on the left of the bitmap and then on the next frame I copy the whole bitmap and paste it on pixel to the right. This error usually is thrown because you're pasting a bitmap bigger than the source and it's going off the limits, but in theory that shouldn't be the case as I'm defining 69 as the width of the rectangle to paste (being the bitmap 70px wide).   I'm using 960.gs layout and when I add the suckerfish menu as part of the content to one of the grids, the contents of adjacent siblings bleed through the menu in all versions of IE. In the listed html below, the text from 'belowFoldSection' will appear through the menu when it is visible and has enough items to make it span over 2nd section. I've set the z-index for #nav and #nav ul in my css and this of course makes it work in FF, Chrome and Safari, but not in IE (because IE incorrectly assigns child elements its own z-index). If I change the .grid_nn class 'position' attribute (set by default in the 960 template) from 'relative' to absolute, this fixes it in IE. However, it is my understanding that I don't want the child elements of the 'container_12' to be taken out of the flow of the document and want them positioned relative to the .container_12's starting point. (Changing the attribute to absolute causes other general layout problems) Can anyone suggest a work-around? • Why is Apache seg faulting?

  We have a production server that seems to Seg Fault a few times every day. The fault is picked up by Apache and logged in the error log - but there seems to be no traffic around the time. If it's a request generating the fault then it looks like it happens before any other logging is made so I can't see how it's happening so it's very hard to debug. • CSS: Labels in table columns

  Hello. BACKGROUND: I would like to have small labels in columns of a table. I'm using some implemented parts of HTML5/CSS3 in my project, and this section specifically is for mobile devices. While both facts are not necessarily relevant, the bottom line is that I don't have to support Internet Explorer or even Firefox for that matter (just WebKit). THE PROBLEM With my current CSS approach, the vertical padding of the cell comes from the <span element (set to display: block with top/bottom margins), which contains the "value" of the column. As a result there's no padding when the <span> is empty or missing (no value) and the label is not in place. The "full" coulmns should give you the idea of where I want the labels to be, even if there's no value, and the <span> is not there. I realize that I could use "non-breaking-space", but I would really like to avoid it. I wonder if any of you have a fix / better way to do this? current code is below. • A format for storing personal contacts in a database

  I'm thinking of the best way to store personal contacts in a database for a business application. The traditional and straightforward approach would be to create a table with columns for each element, i.e. Name, Telephone Number, Job title, Address, etc... However, there are known industry standards for this kind of data, like for example vCard, or hCard, or vCard-RDF/XML or even Windows Contacts XML Schema. Utilizing an standard format would offer some benefits, like inter-operablilty with other systems. But how can I decide which method to use? The requirements are mainly to store the data. Search and ordering queries are highly unlikely but possible. The volume of the data is 100,000 records at maximum. My database engine supports native XML columns. I have been thinking to use some XML-based format to store the personal contacts. Then it will be possible to utilize XML indexes on this data, if searching and ordering is needed. Is this a good approach? Which contacts format and schema would you recommend for this? Edited after first answers Here is why I think the straightforward approach is bad. This is due to the nature of this kind of data - it is not that simple. The personal contacts it is not well-structured data, it may be called semi-structured. Each contact may have different data fields, maybe even such fields which I cannot anticipate. In my opinion, each piece of this data should be treated as important information, i.e. no piece of data could be discarded just because there was no relevant column in the database. If we took it further, assuming that no data may be lost, then we could create a big text column named Comment or Description or Other and put there everything which cannot be fitted well into table columns. But then again - the data would lose structure - this might be bad. If we wanted structured data then - according to the database design principles - the data should be decomposed into entities, and relations should be established between the entities. But this adds complexity - there are just too many entities, and lots of design desicions should be made, like "How do we store Address? Personal Name? Phone number? How do we encode home phone numbers and mobile phone numbers? How about other contact info?.." The relations between entities are complex and multiple, and each relation is a table in the database. Each relation needs to be documented in the design papers. That is a lot of work to do. But it is possible to avoid the complexity entirely - just document that the data is stored according to such and such standard schema, period. Then anybody who would be reading that document should easily understand what it was all about. Finally, this is all about using an industry standard. The standard is, hopefully, designed by some clever people who anticipated and described the structure of personal contacts information much better than I ever could. Why should we all reinvent the wheel?? It's much easier to use a standard schema. The problem is, there are just too many standards - it's not easy to decide which one to use!

Edit: this is related to this bug, The jQuery (I'm using 1.3.2) does thus not seem to create inputs that way? • Gratuitous CRLF in Subject: line - why is it there, and is it legal?

  I'm running into a problem with a NAGIOS system sending emails to a popular email-to-SMS service. The email-to-SMS service takes emails with text in the Subject: line, and sends them on to the mobile number encoded in the To: field. So far so good. Sadly, sendmail (and postfix before it) seem to be inserting a gratuitous CRLF into the (necessarily long) Subject: line, and that's causing my SMS messages to be truncated at the CRLF if and only if the Subject: line contains one or more colons past the gratuitous CRLF. I am confident that the messages are being created correctly, but just to be sure, here's me creating a completely noddy test message to myself, with a long Subject: line: echo "foo" | mail -s "1234567 101234567 201234567 301234567 401234567 501234567 601234567 701234567 801234567 90123456789" [email protected] Note there's no extra colon in this Subject: line; all I'm doing here is showing that an extra CRLF is inserted on the wire. The receiving MTA seems happy to post-process this, and when I look at the on-disc stored mail at the receiving end, I see only a LF (0x0a) in the Subject: line, and the line is parsed correctly and in its entirety by, eg, alpine. Nevertheless, the CRLF is there on the wire, and between me and the (excellent) email-to-SMS support people, we've established that these are the cause of the problem. So my question is: is it lawful for an MTA to insert a gratuitous CRLF on the wire? If it is, and I can prove it, then it's the email-to-SMS house's problem, because they are being intolerant. If it isn't, or it is but I can't prove it, then it becomes my problem, so an answer with references would be most useful. Edit: I can now come clean that the email-to-SMS service in question is kapow. Once this problem was explained to them, they got it, worked with me to develop and test a fix, and have deployed the fix. My long subject lines with colons in now get relayed correctly into SMSes. I don't normally trumpet individual companies, especially not on SF, but I thought it worthy of note that kapow Did The Right Thing. • Intermittent Internet Explorer Error whilst using Javascript to traverse XML Nodes

Recently I've been experiencing intermittment (1 in every 20-30 times) errors in IE when trying to access data in the XML file. Bear with me on this, I'm going to try and go into a fair amount of detail to help anyone who is willing to read this: I have a html file, with an external javascript file attached. Am I accessing the XML nodes incorrectly? I've been toying with fixes for this bug for weeks now, I'd really appreciate any insight into what I'm doing wrong. • dynamically drawing polylines on googlemaps using php/mysql

  Hi. I am new to the googlemaps API. I have written a small app for my mobile phone that periodically updates its location to an SQL databse. I would like to display this information on a googlemap in my browser. Ideally i'd like to then poll the database periodically and if any new co-ords have arrived, add them to the line. • Making a non-trivial Image and Video Gallery with a really nice interface

  Short part: I'm starting to build an Image and Video Gallery for our intranet. It's pretty much like an image gallery with video thumbnails that play on click. It's just good to keep that in mind because caching and streaming happen in very different ways there. It will serve to browse our reference database, which will also contain searching, tagging and voting. There are 3 features that I need to begin with: Quick preview of thumbnails from each Gallery Fast zoom in / out Animated scrolling Now to the long part, since I can't seem to reduce this: I hope this question belongs here. Maybe people can read this through and identify with it, specially since I expect answers to be pretty specific. The first plan was getting Apple's mobile me gallery as base, because it just so happens to have all those 3 features. If you've never seem it, you should check it out. Move the mouse over each collection and you'll get a nice preview "per pixel". Carousel got a really good scrolling, not just because of the pretty effect. I like it much more than cooliris, but it would be nice to have it in several rows, maybe without the magnifying effect... Then it could be all in the same place with the zoom. The more the features blend-in together, the better. Zooming out with the mouse, scrolling by dragging, once the zoom is really out it becomes a browsing through galleries, with the quick-show preview of each, all properly cached and fast. That'd be perfect. A very compelling interface will be important in this project. Well, my point here is just describing what I need and hope to hear from people with more experience in all that stuff of what's already done and what I'd have to do myself. And how (i.e. which framework to use) to do it. To begin with, I've found a gallery demo and its source code (I think it was from here, but the link seems broken now). I guess it was made in SproutCore, which is what mobileme was based upon. Definitely with JQuery (which already seems a little slow). But I'm still missing two features there: the carousel and the fast zoom (it's just not as slow as the zoom in this demo with cappuccino). Then I've found a supposedly better one with a pretty good and similar zoom, that I'm not sure if it's using any framework and is already in php. Right now it'd be better having just the HTML, no server-side, since I'm building interface first. So, can anyone point directions? There are way too many options! Should I look for another solution closer to what I need, or try and tweak this one? I'm not familiar with any framework at all. Sorry for bringing this question that I will have to answer myself anyway sooner or later and sorry that I couldn't make this smaller. Thanks.
