  • SQL Server CTE referred in self joins slow

    Hello, I have written a table-valued UDF that starts by a CTE to return a subset of the rows from a large table. There are several joins in the CTE. A couple of inner and one left join to other tables, which don't contain a lot of rows. The CTE has a where clause that returns the rows within a date range, in order to return only the rows needed. I'm then referencing this CTE in 4 self left joins, in order to build subtotals using different criterias. The query is quite complex but here is a simplified pseudo-version of it WITH DataCTE as ( SELECT [columns] FROM table INNER JOIN table2 ON [...] INNER JOIN table3 ON [...] LEFT JOIN table3 ON [...] ) SELECT [aggregates_columns of each subset] FROM DataCTE Main LEFT JOIN DataCTE BananasSubset ON [...] AND Product = 'Bananas' AND Quality = 100 LEFT JOIN DataCTE DamagedBananasSubset ON [...] AND Product = 'Bananas' AND Quality < 20 LEFT JOIN DataCTE MangosSubset ON [...] GROUP BY [ I have the feeling that SQL Server gets confused and calls the CTE for each self join, which seems confirmed by looking at the execution plan, although I confess not being an expert at reading those. I would have assumed SQL Server to be smart enough to only perform the data retrieval from the CTE only once, rather than do it several times. I have tried the same approach but rather than using a CTE to get the subset of the data, I used the same select query as in the CTE, but made it output to a temp table instead. The version referring the CTE version takes 40 seconds. The version referring the temp table takes between 1 and 2 seconds. Why isn't SQL Server smart enough to keep the CTE results in memory? I like CTEs, especially in this case as my UDF is a table-valued one, so it allowed me to keep everything in a single statement. To use a temp table, I would need to write a multi-statement table valued UDF, which I find a slightly less elegant solution. Did some of you had this kind of performance issues with CTE, and if so, how did you get them sorted? Thanks, Kharlos

  • Hibernate not using schema and catalog name in id generation with strategy increment

    Hi, I am using the hibernate increment strategy to create my IDs on my entities. @GenericGenerator(name="increment-strategy", strategy="increment") @Id @GeneratedValue(generator="increment=strategy") @Column(name="HDR_ID", unique=true, nullable=false) public int getHdrId(){ return this.hdrId; } The entity has the following table annotation @Table(name = "PORDER.PUB.PO_HEADER", schema = "UVOSi", catalog = "VIRT_UVOS") Please note I have two datasources. When I try to insert an entity Hibernate creates the following SQL statement: select max(hdr_id) from PORDER.PUB.PO_HEADER which causes the following error: Group specified is ambiguous, resubmit the query by fully qualifying group name. When I create a query by hand with entityManager.createQuery() hibernate uses the fully qualified name select XXX from VIRT_UVOS.UVOSi.PORDER.PUB.PO_HEADER and that works fine. So how do I get Hibernate to use the fully qualified name in the Id autogeneration? Btw. I am using Hibernate 3.2 and Seam 2.2 running on JBoss 4.2.3 Regards Immo

  • Why is a menu item disabled when using SWTBot?

    I've written up a GUI test using SWTBot to test the Extract Method refactoring. I use editor.selectRange() to select a statement to extract into a method. But, when I run the unit test, the Extract Method refactoring menu item is disabled. Thus, SWTBot fails to invoke the refactoring. When we change org.eclipse.jdt.ui.actions.ExtractMethodAction so that the "Extract Method..." menu item is always enabled, our SWTBot passes. But, SWTBot should let us select the menu item without hacking the org.eclipse.jdt.ui plugin. The whole project containing the above unit test is available at github. I've also reported the problem on the Eclipse forum for SWTBot. But, we haven't received a solution from the forum.

    I'm trying to modify the HTML of the dialog boxes in CKEditor. The HTML inside each of those boxes is an absolute nightmare, and even worse, the source code is compressed and it's unclear what the path of execution is.     I want to pass the "DisplayName" column value returned from SqlDataSource's Select command to a custom function and then the return value to be assigned to "DataTextField" property of DropDownList. I know, I can do this using "CustomExpressionBuilder", I have tried but if I use following: DataTextField="<%$ MyCustomExpressionBuilder:DisplayName %>" I do not receive the value of the DisplayName field in the overriden "GetCodeExpression" method, but the literal value "DisplayName". How can I do this?     Hi I'm a BA / programmer type doing data analysis on a legacy system. I've been teaching myself SQL to help, but I've appeared to hit upon a problem bigger than my abilities. I have two tables (generalized for simplicity): Table Objects Object_PK Table Components Component_PK Object_FK Component_Type There are 100+ distinct values in Component_Type_Code. Given that any object can have N number of Components, how can I see which Component_Type(s) appear with other Component_Type(s)? For example, the following query tells me what component_types appear with the component_type 'Component_type_1': select component_type_code, count(*) from components where object_fk in ( select object_fk from components where component_type_code = 'component_type_1' ) group by component_type_code I'd like to get a query to show me all connections My apologies for the formatting. Any help is appreciated. I've looked at cube and rollup, but didn't know how to apply to this situtation.

  • SQL query duration is longer for smaller dataset?

    I received reports that a my report generating application was not working. After my initial investigation, I found that the SQL transaction was timing out. I'm mystified as to why the query for a smaller selection of items would take so much longer to return results. Quick query (averages 4 seconds to return): SELECT * FROM Payroll WHERE LINEDATE >= '04-17-2010'AND LINEDATE <= '04-24-2010' ORDER BY 'EMPLYEE_NUM' ASC, 'OP_CODE' ASC, 'LINEDATE' ASC Long query (averages 1 minute 20 seconds to return): SELECT * FROM Payroll WHERE LINEDATE >= '04-18-2010'AND LINEDATE <= '04-24-2010' ORDER BY 'EMPLYEE_NUM' ASC, 'OP_CODE' ASC, 'LINEDATE' ASC I could simply increase the timeout on the SqlCommand, but it doesn't change the fact the query is taking longer than it should. Why would requesting a subset of the items take longer than the query that returns more data? How can I optimize this query?

    hi, I'm working on checkBoxTree in GWT-EXT 2.0.3 with Java. My aim is to get a selectionModel which allows me to select(check) only one TreeNode at a time. If I select another TreeNode after selecting one then, the previous one should be unchecked. I've tried using DefaultSelectionModel with TreePanel, but either I've not used it properly or it's working only for selection of TreeNode not for checking a TreeNode. Can anyone help me in this?   • How to check value of stored procedure output parameter

    I have a stored procedure that: A. inserts some rows into a "table variable" based on some joins B. selects all values from column x from that table into a string with comma separated values C. selects all from the "table variable" If I execute the procedure like this: EXEC CatalogGetFilmDetails2 2,111111; a table is returned as instructed per step C above. How can I execute it so that also the output parameter value is displayed? (see point B above). I need to check if it's calculated properly. And since the second parameter is of output type, meaning it's calculated inside the procedure, why is it mandatory to specify a value for it when executing the procedure? I normally use a random value for it, it anyway doesn't matter/impact the result. On the other hand if I try to execute it without the output parameter, it returns an error) Thank you very much!     I have this query in MySQL: SELECT pr.*, pr7.value AS `room_price_high` FROM `jos_hp_properties` pr LEFT OUTER JOIN `jos_hp_properties2` pr7 ON pr7.property=pr.id WHERE pr7.field=23 The jos_hp_properties table has 27 rows but the query only returns one. Based on this question I think it may be because of the WHERE clause. The jos_hp_properties2 table has fields id, property, field, value, where field is a foreign key to a third table (which I don't need to get data from). Is there a way to select all the rows from the first table, including the value from table #2 where the field is 23 (or NULL if there is no field 23)?

When I attach Console.Out, I see nothing(command prompt does not even open). But when I include following:- context.Log = new System.IO.StreamWriter("d:\\abcd.txt"); I get an error, that "The process can not access the file because it is being used by another process" and that process is "w3wp.exe". How can I see the sql commands being executed by DataContext then ?

    I have been porting oracle selects, and I have been running across a lot of queries like so: SELECT e.last_name, d.department_name FROM employees e, departments d WHERE e.department_id(+) = d.department_id; ...and: SELECT last_name, d.department_id FROM employees e, departments d WHERE e.department_id = d.department_id(+); Are there any guides/tutorials for converting all of the variants of the (+) syntax? What is that syntax even called (so I can scour google)? When was this standard phased out? Any info is appreciated.
