Some would prefer a lower level language such as C because it allows the student to learn more about what goes on beyond the abstractions in terms of memory allocation and deallocation and pointers and pointer arithmetic. On the other hand, others would say that they would prefer a higher level language like Java because it allows the student to learn more about the concepts of the structures and the algorithm design rather than 'waste time' and fiddle around with memory segmentation faults and all the blunders that come with languages where memory management is manual. What is your take on this issue? And also, please post any references you may know of that also discuss this argument.

    I've noticed this culture surrounding Ruby where developers truly believe that they are somehow more gifted than developers of other languages, regardless of experience and talent (even when that isn't the case, I've met some extremely junior Ruby developers come up with some pretty basic constructs, and pass them off as some sort of revolutionary idea). The derision of strongly typed languages seems to be a common theme as well; regardless of its merits. Is there something particular to the Ruby syntax in general that is to account for this? Is there a socialogical component to it?

  • Ubuntu option vanishes after setting up windows XP(?) [closed]

    I have installed both windows XP as well as Ubuntu 9.04 on my machine.I can choose between them using dual boot option at the startup.Up to this, it is fine. But unfortunately when my XP crashes, I need to install XP again.But when I do it,after installing XP successfully, dual boot option no longer appears at the startup. So the Ubuntu goes in vein. What is the problem here? How do I solve it?

  • Why do people keep parsing HTML using regex? [closed]

    As much as I love regular expressions, it's obvious to me that it's not the best tool for parsing HTML, especially given the numerous good HTML parsers out there. And yet there are numerous questions on stackoverflow that attempts to parse HTML using regex. And people would always point out what a bad idea that is in the comments. And the accepted answer would often have a disclaimer how this isn't really the ideal way of doing things. But based on the constant flow of questions, it still seems that people keep parsing HTML using regex, despite the perceived difficulty in reading and maintaining it (and that's putting correctness aside for now). So my question is: why? Is it because it's easy to learn? Is it because it's faster? Is it because it's the industry standard? Is it because there are already so many reusable regexes to build from? Is it because 100% correctness is never really the objective? (90% good enough?) etc... I'd also like to hear from the downvoters why they did so. Is it because: There's absolutely nothing wrong with using regex to parse HTML and asking "Why?" is just dumb? The premise of the question is flawed because the people who are using regex to parse HTML is such a small minority?

  • Why can't there be an "ultimate" programming language? [closed]

    There is an uncountable sum of programming languages out there. They obviously all have their pro's and con's - but why can't there be one to "beat them all"? The main part of a programming language is it's syntax and what's possible with it. The rest are usually only a bunch of libraries, frameworks and extensions wrapped around it. So couldn't you combine all the great aspects and experiences gained from the thousands of programming languages out there to build one with a syntax that fits every task? Wouldn't it be better having only one programming language? I see only problems with the current amount of the ones in use. Why can't there be a perfect language when thinking of syntax, constructs and typing?

    I like programming so much, i did it since i was 10, and i believe that studying computer science will make a lot of money as well as i love it. However I also want to learn hardware. I don't only want to do programming all the time without knowing the architecture of device that i program. I asked my teacher, and she said that if I get into computer science, i won't learn anything about hardware, is it true?(She graduated from u-dub) In the other hand, my math teacher told me to get into electrical engineering, since it also contain programming. The thing is that i want to emphasize my study to programming while learning some about hardware. What is major that suits me the best?     All of our writers and editors use Microsoft Word for document creation and a lot of what they create ends up on the Web. Is there a good offline editor with a flavor similar to Word that they could use to create their documents. Styling of the content should not be a concern, only producing semantic HTML (most documents they create could be done using only header and paragraph tags for instance). They have tried CKEditor and TinyMCE but it is still too foreign for them and it is online so they don't trust it not to lose their work.
