• Managing rolling deployments in the cloud

  Recently I've been experimenting with various cloud management tools like RightScale, Scalr, custom scripts for managing a variety of servers, each hosting several roles (app, db, load balancer, job queues, etc). The one thing I find lacking in most solutions is a way to do rolling deployments, i.e. running deployments sequentially across a number of servers with the same role. For instance, I dont want to build all of my webservers at the same time, as that will almost definitely result in some down time or 500s for my customers. I'd rather have one or two servers build at a time, while other servers are still available to handle requests. The other alternative is obviously to launch new servers that automatically update themselves on boot, but this isn't as cost effective, and most likely requires more time for the build to complete (it's faster to build on an existing server than to launch a new server and kill old ones). We've all heard of the big companies having the famous "push to build" button (companies like Twilio, Etsy, etc.) but it seems that they all have custom implementations of this. I'm not talking about a simple ssh-loop, clusterssh, or even an mcollective - I preferably want something with a nice simple interface that allows me to specify something like a RightScript or a Scalr script to run on a set of servers with a specific role, and it builds them sequentially. Does any one know of easy ways to get this done, or is this a candidate for a new open source project?

• Reverse Proxy issues IIS on Windows Server 2012

  I've tried searching, but nothing seems to be working. I have a feeling it might be due to our custom Rewrite module. Here is the excerpt from the web.config that sets it up: <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true"> <add name="UrlRewriteModule" type="EShop.UrlRewriteModule"/> </modules> EShop.UrlRewriteModule is a custom class in App_Code which handles incoming requests. I have set up the rewrite rules but it doesn't seem to want to work. I'm inclined to think that our rewrite class is interfering earlier than the proxy rules and saying that the page doesn't exist. Here's what we're trying to accomplish: We are working on a new site for a client, but they have a forum that they're not likely to want to move. I set up a new subdomain to point to the new server while the site is being completed (before we go live) and want the reverse proxy to forward test.domain.com/forum to www.domain.com/forum. After the site goes live, we'll need to forward using an IP address instead. I've set up a reverse proxy successfully with nginx, but we didn't want to set up another server if we didn't need to. Ideas?

• Replacement for public folder workflow, I'm confused as to how sharepoint does it.

  For years Microsoft has been slowly phasing out public folders, perhaps exchange 2010 really is the LAST TIME they'll be shipped... I've heard sharepoint is the replacement, but I don't understand full, can someone give me an idea of how to replace this workflow? In our office, we have projects, they have a project number, ie 10353. Each job folder has a public folder, organized in a hierachy like Projects Year Folder Subfolders The main subfolder we use is for genera correspondence. When an email is received that relates to a project, it is dragged and dropped (or right click move to) a public folder. Adding public folder favourites for each user helps this. When an email is sent, we have a custom email form, which is the default email form, but with a project number field next to the subject line. When you enter the job number in there, it carbon copies our filing system in, which reads the job number and puts the email in the public folder for you. if you need to refer to emails, you go to public folder and find them there. This isn't the best with large jobs, but it works ok. Now, I have limited experience with sharepoint (well, WSS), we've used it to do some neat discussion boards/polls etc as an intranet site, but I haven't seen much of its integration with outlook. The great thing about our solution is how tightly it integrates with outlook which is exactly where the emails are. If you want to forward an old email, you go to public folder and forward it, simple. Any solution that replaces it should be at least as easy as this. Improvements we would like would be to have better searching of emails, better support in exchange (ie future version) and also, custom forms in outlook are being phased out (the VBA kind), so avoiding these would be good. Does sharepoint do this? or what solutions do this kind of thing?

  I am trying to find out the practicalities of doing a mail merge when each “record” to be merged on includes some images. I need to: print letters And envelopes Both the letters and the envelopes have: Fixed text Fixed images Text that come from the mail merge record Images that come from the mail merge record I don’t know if all images will be the same size for every record, so a bit of simple “on the fly” automatic formatting may be needed . I need to be able to repeat a single item if I get a problem (e.g when folding the letter). What problems am I likely to have? Is Word 2007 up to this sort of mail merging, or should I be looking at a report writing tool? How do I restart a print run after a printer jam etc? What format should I store the “records” and there images in? E.g Can standard software cope with images that are stored in separate files named after the “CustomerId” that is in the “record” (I can write custom software if needed, but would rather use standard “of-the-shelf” software for the printing, I am planning on custom software for the data creation, so can output in whatever format is needed)

• Clone Microsoft VM > SharePoint issues

  Hi, We have an existing (production) Hyper-V VM that I want to clone to create a staging server. This server is NOT on a domain/active-directory - uses all local computer accounts. It is Windows 2008 OS, SharePoint 2007, SQL server 2008, Reporting Services, and some custom line-of-business web-applications. We rename the server etc as per the documentation we have, but are having troubles specifically with SharePoint. Some of the sites do not come up, and some issues adding/updating site settings such as site owners. Does anyone know of a definitive resource to this process? thanks Update: We seem to have most working, but the Shared Service Provider, and the SSP's admin site, are not working. In addition, the custom web-parts that reference IIS Session objects are failing (which seem to be related to the Share Service Provider). All the Windows user accounts for various services are renamed during the server cloning, but the windows account names in SQL server are not automatically changed. • EC2 kernel decision and issues with creating a new machine with my AMI

  I could really use some advice. I started a new instance on EC2 using Amazon's AMI and during the deployment process I selected a Kernel ID of "Use Default". I then configured my server the way that I wanted to and took a snapshot of it. I then created my own AMI to create new servers with. When I try and create a new server with this AMI the server fails to start and I get the error: EXT3-fs: sda1: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240). Which appears to happen because I am selecting a kernel id of "Use default" again when building my second server. I have read that in order for this to work I need to choose the same kernel id that was used in my original server. I have deleted my original server and don't know what it was using. What is the best process to follow in order to not have these issues? Should I choose "Use Default" for my original server? How do you know which kernel it selected? Then should I just document this and always specify this during the deployment of my next servers using my custom AMI? OR should I choose a custom kernel id during the initial build and always use this one moving ahead hoping Amazon never retires it? Thanks for any advice!

• Unable to set initcwnd on a Hetzner server

  We just ordered a bunch of Hetzner EX40SSD servers with the minimal Debian install image that they provide and everything is just fine except that looking at tcpdumps for fine tuning the network from various locations the initcwnd param seems to be stuck at 6 no matter how we change it. By default Debian 3.2 kernels should have that setting to 10 so it's pretty strange. Is it possible that the NIC driver or a custom setting in the Hetzner Debian image is limiting this param? Even if we set it to 4, like the old kernel default, it doesn't work. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Does anyone know if the NIC drivers provided by default by Debian have some kind on limitation. In a long thread in http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1200617&highlight=hetzner they talk about a page http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Installation_des_r8168-Treibers/en where Hetzner states that the included Realtek r8168 driver is not working properly, but nowhere do they say that the initcwnd could be affected. Tomorrow i will try to install a CentOs image and see if Debian is the problem...Last resort would be to install a custom debian image, but that is a pain in the ass! Thanks!

• Setting umask for all users

  I'm trying to set the default umask to 002 for all users including root on my CentOS box. According to this and other answers, this can be achieved by editing /etc/profile. However the comments at the top of that file say: It's NOT a good idea to change this file unless you know what you are doing. It's much better to create a custom.sh shell script in /etc/profile.d/ to make custom changes to your environment, as this will prevent the need for merging in future updates. So I went ahead and created the following file: /etc/profile.d/myapp.sh with the single line: umask 002 Now, when I create a file logged in as root, the file is born with 664 permissions, the way I had hoped. But files created by my Apache wsgi application, or files created with sudo, still default to 644 permissions... $ touch newfile (as root): Result = 664 (Works) $ sudo touch newfile: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Files created by Apache wsgi app: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Files created by Python's RotatingFileHandler: Result = 644 (Doesn't work) Why is this happening, and how can I ensure 664 file permissions system wide, no matter what creates the file? UPDATE: I ended up finding a cleaner solution to this on a per-directory basis using ACLs, which I describe here.

• How to disable Utility Manager (Windows Key + U)

  How do I disable the Windows + U hotkey in Windows XP? Alternatively, how do I stop the utility manager from being active? The two are related. The utilty manager is currently providing a potential security hole and I need to remove it[1]. The system I'm developing uses a custom Gina to log in and start a custom shell. This removes most Windows Key hotkeys but the Win + U still pops up the manager app. Update: Things I've tried and don't work: NoWinKeys registry setting - this only affects explorer hotkeys; Renaming utilman.exe - program reappears next login; Third party software - not really an option, these machines are audited by the clients and additional, third party software would be unlikely to be accepted. Also, the proedure needs to be reasonably straightforward - this has to be done by field service engineers to existing machines (machines currently in Russia, Holland, France, Spain, Ireland and USA). • SSH Keys Authentication keeps asking for password

  Im trying to set access from ServerA(SunOS) to ServerB(Some custom Linux with Keyboard Interactive login) with SSH Keys. As a proof of concept I was able to do it between 2 virtual machines. Now in my real life scenario it isnt working. I created the keys in ServerA, copied them to ServerB, chmod'd .ssh folders to 700 on both ServerA,B. What could be happening? EDIT WITH ANSWER: Problem was that I didnt have those settings enabled in the sshd_config (Refer to accepted answer) AND that while pasting the key from ServerA to ServerB it would interpret the key as 3 separate lines. What I did was, in case you cant use ssh-copy-id like I couldnt. Paste the first line of your key in your "ServerB" authorized_keys file WITHOUT the last 2 characters, then type yourself the missing characters from line 1 and the first one from line 2, this will prevent adding a "new line" between the first and second line of the key. Repeat with the 3d line.

  I am using puppet and the puppet network device management module and I am trying to build my custom type. In the built-in type for the routers configuration, you can specify a list of nodes and then the configuration inside that node: node "c2950.domain.com" { Interface { duplex => auto, speed => auto } interface { "FastEthernet 0/1": description => "--> to end-user workstation", mode => access, native_vlan => 1000 # [...] More configuration } What I am trying to do, is to move the manifest declaration of the nodes and the configuration of my custom type to a Hiera file like this one: nodes: - node1 - node2 config_device: node1: custom_parameter: "whatever1" node2: custom_parameter: "whatever2" And then in the manifest iterate over the hiera file creating the nodes with the configuration of each node with something like (I am taking as reference this question in serverfault): class my_class { $nodes = hiera_array('nodes') define hash_extract() { $conf_hash = hiera_hash("config_device") $custom_paramter = $conf_hash[$name] ## TRICK lies in $name variable node $name { my_custom_device { $name: custom_parameter => $device_conf['custom_parameter'] } } } hash_extract{$pdu_names: } } } But for this solution I have two problems, I can not define a node inside a define and I can not parameterize a node name. So, is there any way to declare nodes from a Hiera file with their configuration inside?

• How to write rules for persistent net names?

  I know that a process generates persistent network card names based on rules found in /lib/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules. I also know how to completely disable this process with a simple echo '#' > /etc/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules but I've read that I "could also write my own rules file to give the interface a name — the persistent rules generator ignores the interface if a name has already been set" (/etc/udev/rules.d/README confirms that this is possible). Do you have any pointers to documentation about how to write such rules? (I mostly care about Debian/Ubuntu and a bit less for CentOS) As a specific example of why I want to write custom rules: I have two identical servers with one onboard LAN and one PCI LAN. In case of HW failure I want to be able to move disks from HW#1 to HW#2 and it's important for eth0 to continue pointing to the onboard card and eth1 to the PCI card (no one wants to mess with cabling in the middle of a HW failure panic). My current workaround works but is a lot of work[1] so I wonder if writing custom rules would allow me to express something simple like this: cards with MAC A or B should be named eth0 cards with MAC C or D should be named eth1 follow default naming scheme for anything else [1] install the OS in HW#1 and keep a copy of /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. Move the disks to HW#2 and keep a second copy of the same file. Concatenate the two copies and manually edit the NAME="ethX" part. Replace /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules with my version. Finally disable auto-creation of a new 70-persistent-net.rules using echo '#' > /etc/udev/rules.d/75-persistent-net-generator.rules

However, the module is sometimes loaded using Import-Module MyModule -Force (actually, this is in the install script of the module). In this case, the call to Update-FormatData fails with this error : Update-FormatData : There were errors in loading the format data file: Microsoft.PowerShell, c:\pathto\myfile.Types.ext.ps1xml : File skipped because it was already present from "Microsoft.PowerShell". • FTP Scripting Capabilities

  I am looking for an FTP client that will allow me to do the following Include a GUI for setting up a number of FTP connections Support FTPS Run unattended on Windows Server 2008 Retry failed transactions Support email Support custom scripts I need to pull files from a few different servers and there are certain calculations that need to be done depending on which server the files come from. I've looked at SmartFTP and it looks like pretty much what I need except I can't get it to run as a Windows Scheduled Task (I currently have some support threads open in their forum). I've also looked at a few other FTP clients (Filezilla, RoboFTP, and AutoFTP (you can find the Windows 7 BSOD in this one!)) that haven't had the capabilities I'm looking for. Right now, I'm looking at WS_FTP and its scripting capabilities. It appears I can create a script to run as a scheduled task, but I can't add the script to a file transfer task. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can do post-transfer processing on the files or better yet how to integrate scripting into the file transfer task? I'm also open to other suggestions for FTP clients as well if you have them! If I can't find a suitable FTP client, custom scripting will just have to do the trick.

• Looking for VCS wrapper that tracks system files changing across the whole *nix OS and sends diffs through email

  I need some software that looks after custom directories across the whole OS (i.e. /etc) and alerting me if someone edit something file inside. Additionally, this tool must automatically commit and push changes into backup server, so I can easily determine when specific change in specific file was made. I'm using cvsbackup right now but I want to create or found something more modern. I think using git as VCS is a great idea. I could have local repository and easily revert changes in my configuration files. Furthermore, pushing changes to the remote repository would helps me to recover my configuration files when the server is fault. It doesn't seems difficult to write some wrapper around the git but there are a lot of problems. For example, I need to track custom directories: /usr/local/nginx/ and /etc/. So the destination point for my git repository is /. I don't need to track the other directories so I must to write overwhelming .gitignore rule: * !.gitignore !/etc/ !etc/* !/usr /usr/* !/usr/local /usr/local/* !/usr/local/nginx !/usr/local/nginx/* It's very daunting and prone to error. So it's maybe a good idea to create intermediate file that wrapper reads and converts to .gitignore format. Additionally, I don't want to keep my .git folder in / partition so I need to set appropriate GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE variables for git. Is there any ready to use tools for implementation this task? I don't found any but I don't believe that no one needs this feature.

The application starts up fine, the database tables are created by hibernate and data is imported by my database importer, so Seam is alive, running and well. • Handling HumanTask attachments in Oracle BPM 11g PS4FP+ (II)

  Retrieving uploaded attachments -UCM- As stated in my previous blog entry, Oracle BPM 11g 11.1.1.5.1 (aka PS4FP) introduced a new cool feature whereby you can use Oracle WebCenter Content (previously known as Oracle UCM) as the repository for the human task attached documents. For more information about how to use or enable this feature, have a look here. The attachment scope (either TASK or PROCESS) also applies to UCM-attachments. But even with this other feature, one question might arise when using UCM attachments. How can I get them from within the process? The first answer would be to use the same getTaskAttachmentContents() XPath function already explained in my previous blog entry. In fact, that's the way it should be. But in Oracle BPM 11g 11.1.1.5.1 (PS4FP) and 11.1.1.6.0 (PS5) there's a bug that prevents you to do that. If you invoke such function against a UCM-attachment, you'll get a null content response (bug#13907552). Even if the attachment was correctly uploaded. While this bug gets fixed, next I will show a workaround that lets me to retrieve the UCM-attached documents from within a BPM process. Besides, the sample will show how to interact with WCC API from within a BPM process.Aside note: I suggest you to read my previous blog entry about Human Task attachments where I briefly describe some concepts that are used next, such as the execData/attachment[] structure. Sample Process I will be using the following sample process: A dummy UserTask using "HumanTask2" Human Task, followed by an Embedded Subprocess that will retrieve the attachments payload. In this case, and here's the key point of the sample, we will retrieve such payload using WebCenter Content WebService API (IDC): and once retrieved, we will write each of them back to a file in the server using a File Adapter service: In detail:  We will use the same attachmentCollection XSD structure and same BusinessObject definition as in the previous blog entry. However we create a separate variable, named attachmentUCM, based on such BusinessObject. We will still need to keep a copy of the HumanTask output's execData structure. Therefore we need to create a new variable of type TaskExecutionData (different one than the other used for non-UCM attachments): As in the non-UCM attachments flow, in the output tab of the UserTask mapping, we'll keep a copy of the execData structure: Now we get into the embedded subprocess that will retrieve the attachments' payload. First, and using an XSLT transformation, we feed the attachmentUCM variable with the following information: The name of each attachment (from execData/attachment/name element) The WebCenter Content ID of the uploaded attachment. This info is stored in execData/attachment/URI element with the format ecm://<id>. As we just want the numeric <id>, we need to get rid of the protocol prefix ("ecm://"). We do so with some XPath functions as detailed below: with these two functions being invoked, respectively: We, again, set the target payload element with an empty string, to get the <payload></payload> tag created. The complete XSLT transformation is shown below. Remember that we're using the XSLT for-each node to create as many target structures as necessary.  Once we have fed the attachmentsUCM structure and so it now contains the name of each of the attachments along with each WCC unique id (dID), it is time to iterate through it and get the payload. Therefore we will use a new embedded subprocess of type MultiInstance, that will iterate over the attachmentsUCM/attachment[] element: In each iteration we will use a Service activity that invokes WCC API through a WebService. Follow these steps to create and configure the Partner Link needed: Login to WCC console with an administrator user (i.e. weblogic). Go to Administration menu and click on "Soap Wsdls" link. We will use the GetFile service to retrieve a file based on its dID. Thus we'll need such service WSDL definition that can be downloaded by clicking the GetFile link. Save the WSDL file in your JDev project folder. In the BPM project's composite view, drag & drop a WebService adapter to create a new External Reference, based on the just added GetFile.wsdl. Name it UCM_GetFile. WCC services are secured through basic HTTP authentication. Therefore we need to enable the just created reference for that: Right-click the reference and click on Configure WS Policies. Under the Security section, click "+" to add the "oracle/wss_username_token_client_policy" policy The last step is to set the credentials for the security policy. For the sample we will use the admin user for WCC (weblogic/welcome1). Open the composite.xml file and select the Source view. However we find here a problem. The WCC GetFile service operation that we will use, GetFileByID, accepts as input a structure similar to this one, where all element tags are optional: <get:GetFileByID xmlns:get="http://www.stellent.com/GetFile/">    <get:dID>?</get:dID>   <get:rendition>?</get:rendition>   <get:extraProps>      <get:property>         <get:name>?</get:name>         <get:value>?</get:value>      </get:property>   </get:extraProps></get:GetFileByID> and we need to fill up just the <get:dID> tag element. Due to some kind of restriction or bug on WCC, the rest of the tag elements must NOT be sent, not even empty (i.e.: <get:rendition></get:rendition> or <get:rendition/>). A sample request that performs the query just by the dID, must be in the following format: <get:GetFileByID xmlns:get="http://www.stellent.com/GetFile/">   <get:dID>12345</get:dID></get:GetFileByID> The issue here is that the simple mapping in BPM does create empty tags being a sample result as follows: <get:GetFileByID xmlns:get="http://www.stellent.com/GetFile/"> <get:dID>12345</get:dID> <get:rendition/> <get:extraProps/> </get:GetFileByID> Although the above structure is perfectly valid, it is not accepted by WCC. Therefore, we need to bypass the problem. The workaround we use (many others are available) is to add a Mediator component between the BPM process and the Service that simply copies the input structure from BPM but getting rid of the empty tags. Follow these steps to configure the Mediator: Drag & drop a new Mediator component into the composite. Uncheck the creation of the SOAP bindings and use the Interface Definition from WSDL template and select the existing GetFile.wsdl Double click in the mediator to edit it. Add a static routing rule to the GetFileByID operation, of type Service and select References/UCM_GetFile/GetFileByID target service: Create the request and reply XSLT mappers: Make sure you map only the dID element in the request: And do an Auto-mapper for the whole response: Finally, we can now add and configure the Service activity in the BPM process. Drag & drop it to the embedded subprocess and select the NormalizedGetFile service and getFileByID operation: Map both the input: ...and the output: Once this embedded subprocess ends, we will have all attachments (name + payload) in the attachmentsUCM variable, which is the main goal of this sample. But in order to test everything runs fine, we finish the sample writing each attachment to a file. To that end we include a final embedded subprocess to concurrently iterate through each attachmentsUCM/attachment[] element: On each iteration we will use a Service activity that invokes a File Adapter write service. In here we have two important parameters to set. First, the payload itself. The file adapter awaits binary data in base64 format (string).   I've created some InDesign Pages that I want to use as templates. I've created an XML file with all the appropriate data. I want to merge the XML data with the InDesign page and have a few hundred pages automatically generated. I've been reading online and working with InDesign's "Import XML" features without any luck. The documentation has been pretty poor for me. And Google searches haven't returned much fruitful. Edit: I'm updating this to now include my present steps 1) I create a Master Page of my template 2) I add a bunch of text frames where I want the imported data from the XML file to be places 3) I open the "Tags" window and Import and XML file 4) I mark my text frames in the Master Document with the appropriate tags 5) I then add a lot of pages (like 200) to the document 6) Then I use "Import XML" to try and get the data brought in and filled across all 200 pages. This is where I fail. So there's something I'm missing. It might be that InDesign doesn't work as I'm expecting... Anyone have any good tips for mail-merge like functionality with an XML document and auto-generation of InDesign pages? BTW, here's an example of Adobe's great documentation for merging repeated XML elements.
