  • How should I build a privacy drop-down (select) menu?

    I'm trying to build something similar to Facebook's privacy selection menu, except without the 'custom' option. It will only list a few options such as 'show to all', 'show to friends only', or 'completely hidden'. Right now I'm thinking of using simple JavaScript to change a hidden input field to the new value they click on, so if they clicked on the division for 'show to friends only' it would change the corresponding field, say 'email_privacy', to 1. Is there a better way to do this or am I pretty much on track? P.S. I am not planning on using a select element, I was planning on building a custom drop-down menu using CSS since select elements are so highly non-customizable. I'm doing it this way to save space, rather than having this massive selection menu at the right which takes up a bunch of space. Note: I'm not really interested in using jQuery, that's just extra libraries and crap that I don't want to load. I can do it in JavaScript just as easily so I might as well use that.

  • Spoof referrer to Google Analytics?

    Whenever a user visits "Page A" on my site, I immediately redirect him to "Page B" by setting window.location with Javascript. "Page A" has no Google Analytics tracking on it -- when someone is redirected from "Page A" to "Page B" I want to track him as if he entered the site via "Page B". Unfortunately, my current setup breaks referrer information since people who are redirected to "Page B" appear to Google Analytics as if they came from "Page A": After users are redirected to "Page B", I want to tell Google Analytics their "real" referrer (i.e., the referrer to "Page A"). How can I do this? (Note: I realize that using a real HTTP redirect instead of a Javascript-based redirect would solve this problem. Unfortunately this isn't an option)

    I have a form with a drop down menu and I want to do a javascript action whenever the user changes the selection. I imagine it is possible find the input later, using javascript, and attach an event to to it; but it seems like it would be easier if there was some sort of attribute or option that could be defined in form-configure(): e.g. $this->widgetSchema['menu'] = new sfWidgetFormChoice(array( ... 'onclick' => javascript function )); obviously this doesn't work, and it probably wouldn't be an onclick method either, but my question is how do you attach a javascript event to a input/widget?

  • Catching the Facebook Login Event to change the HTML of the parent page

    I am trying to create Facebook based login using Javascript. Once a person clicks a button he should get a div replaced by another div, if he is logged in to Facebook. However, if he is not logged in to Facebook he is asked his Facebook credentials and he logs in. However, we need the user to click the button once more for the div replacement to happen in this case. I want to know if there is a way in which I can catch the Facebook login event and change the div? Is polling a way or there is some other way out. I want to use only Javascript.

I know it's NOT a rule but many prefer it that way. If you don't believe it, just view source of this page! And tell me what's the better style for best performance.

  • c# const in jQuery?

    Hi guys, I have this piece of code in javascript: var catId = $.getURLParam("category"); In my asp.net and c# code for "category" query string i use a public const: public const string CATEGORY = "category"; so if i want to change the query string parameter to be "categoryTest" i only change this const and all the code is updated. Now the question is: how can i do something similar for the javascript i have in the same application (so i want to use the same constant)? I mean i want something like this: var catId = $.getURLParam(CQueryStringParameters.CATEGORY); but because there are none asp.net tags, my const is not interpreted... Any workaround?

  • Best way to structure AJAX for a Zend Framework application

    Sorry, but there's a lot of outdated and just plain bad information for Zend Framework, since it has changed so much over the years and is so flexible. I thought of having an AJAX module service layer, with controllers and actions that interact with my model. Easy, but not very extensible and would violate DRY. If I change the logistics of some process I'll have to edit the AJAX controllers and the normal controllers. So ideally I would load the exact same actions for both javascript and non-javascript users. I have thought about maybe checking for $_POST['ajax'], if it is set I would load a different (json'y) view for the data. Was wondering how/a good way to do this (front controller plugin I imagine?) or if someone can point me to an UP TO DATE tutorial that describes a really good way for building a larger ajax application. thx

    I just watched a video of Douglas Crockford's presentation about his 2009 book JavaScript: The Good Parts. In the video, he explains that the following block is dangerous because it produces silent errors: return { ok: false }; And that it should actually be written like this (emphasising that although seemingly identical the behavioural difference is crucial): return { ok: false }; You can see his comments around 32 minutes into the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQVTIJBZook&feature=player_embedded#!&start=1920 I have not heard this before, and was wondering if this rule still applies or if this requirement in syntax has been overcome by JavaScript developments since this statement was made.   • How to "enable" HTML5 elements in IE that were inserted by AJAX call?

    IE does not work good with unknown elements (ie. HTML5 elements), one cannot style them , or access most of their props. Their are numerous work arounds for this for example: http://remysharp.com/2009/01/07/html5-enabling-script/ The problem is that this works great for static HTML that was available on page load, but when one creates HTML5 elements afterward (for example AJAX call containing them, or simply creating with JS), it will mark these newly added elements them as HTMLUnknownElement as supposed to HTMLGenericElement (in IE debugger). Does anybody know a work around for that, so that newly added elements will be recognized/enabled by IE?   • How do I parse an XML file that's on a different web server?

    I have a list of training dates saved into an XML file, and I have a little javascript file that parses all of the training dates and spits them out into a neatly formatted page. This solution was fine until we decided that we wanted another web-page on another sever to access the same XML file. Since I cannot use JavaScript to parse an XML file that's located on another server, I figured I'd just use an ASP script.   • Detect IE setting: check for newer versions of stored pages "never"

    I understand there isn't a way to interrogate a users IE settings directly due to security reasons, but is there a way to derive this answer with some other mechanism? I would like to stop a user from using my site if the setting "Check for newer versions of stored pages" is set to "Never". Any suggestions? Is there a way I could test for this using javascript? An example of what I am trying to accomplish is this: While it is not possible to check IE settings to see if you are running a popup blocker, that is a way to "test" for a popup blocker via javascript. I am looking for something similiar but for the cache setting, not the popup blocker.

    Hi, yesterday i noticed that sometimes on my webpage shows up javascript errors. when i went to source code, i found that one of .js files was totaly replaced with a ton of porn links. i checked the ftp for this file, but there was just old javascript file without any changes. yet i go back to check source code via browser and indeed there was again original .js today i visited my webpage again and the problem repeated. first visit showed me ton of porn pages cached .js file was hacked but after clearing browser cache js go back to oryginal i checked all files on my ftp against my offilne version, but all files are without any change. in last few years i was attacked by xss few times but in every case it was easy to diagnose and fix. but now i spend 12h and didnt find infection. do you have any idea how to find it? the webpage is: http://robert.frk.pl

  • ASP.NET MVC, JSON & non JavaScript clients

    I need to ensure that an application I am developing is accessable and also works with JavaScript turned off. I just need a pointer to assist with the following. I had 3 'chained' select boxes and I wanted JavaScript enabled clients to have a nice Ajax experience. I can easily write the required functionality to populate the chained boxes on the change event of the preceeding select using jQuery and JSON with a WCF service. However what about the non JavaScript client? Would I wrap a submit next to the select and place these inside their own form to post back with a certain action or different querstring parameter? Can the same controller give me a partial JSON response as well as feeding the full HTML response. Can anyone point me to a good demo that utilises both JSON and normal HTTP posts to produce the same result in ASP.NET MVC. All ASP.NET MVC demo/examples I see forget about the non JavaScript enabled client.

I've tried using Javascript and inserting animation commands directly into the SVG, but nothing works. I don't want to load in an entire JS library for this one task. I notice the following change that cause me some troulbe - I am having a code that is similar to this: <form method="POST" action="/admin/modify"> <input type="text"/> <button onclick="dosomething()">Press</button> </form> <script type="text/javascript"> function doSomething(){ // doesn't matter what actually } </script> What is weired to me in this code is that by pressing the button inside the form, all I want is to perform some javascript action but eventaully it causes the form to be submitted too, even when I am not willing to do it. So - is it true? and if so how can I perform some java script actoin inside a from but prevent the form from being submitted automatically?
