• The advantages & disadvantages to be had from using a Web Framework?

  Hello, This question is focused on extracting the advantages and disadvantages of using Web based Frameworks: such as Cake PHP, Zend, jQuery, ASP.NET). This question is completely language agnostic. Let me start with the notion of "Standing on the shoulders of Giants". Advantages: Empowers Developers - by taking features that would have previously have taken 100's of lines of code and compressing them into one simple function call empowers developers to integrate more complex features into their Web Sites. Allow for Quicker development of applications - this is very relevant for people that need websites created in a very small window (has anyone any examples of this?) Lower Costs - allows programmers to pass cost savings onto the customer, a whole new range of customers generated that wanted a website but previously could not afford the higher development costs. Disadvantages: Lost Understanding - by relying on the features of a framework a developer is in danger of loosing understanding on how things work (underneath the hood). The configuration cliff - once you go further than the configuration of your framework your productivity drops right off, it can be difficult to implement features outside of a frameworks configuration. Developer tramlines - you (the developer) has to do things the way that the developer want you to do things. Security issues - giving people these tools to develop professional looking websites fast is a potential risk, people can quickly create professional looking websites for fraudulent companies. • Calculation of Milestones/Task list

  My project manager assigned me a task to estimate the development time for an iPad application. Lets assume that I gave estimation of 15 working days. He thought that the number of days where too many and client needed the changes to the application urgently (as in most of cases). So, he told me: "I am going to assign two developer including you and as per my understandings and experience it won't take more than seven working days." Clarifications I was given the task of estimating development time for an individual. How could I be sure that 2 developers are going to finish it within 7 days? (I am new to team & I hardly know the others abilities) Questions Why do most of project managers / team leaders have understandings like: If one developer requires N days, Then two developers would require N/2 days, Do they think something like developer = s/w production machines? Should a team member (developer, not team lead or any higher post) estimate other developers work? I didn't deny anything in the meeting and didn't said, but what should be the appropriate answer to convince them that N/2 formula that they follow is not correct?

  I think I am asking generic question. Being a developer in windows what should I read to improve my skills? Do I need to read concepts on need basis or do I need to read concepts well in advance? If I want to read the concepts in advance then what topics do I need to read. (Note : I am a Windows developer. I use c++ programming language, Win32/MFC frame work and I use Visual studio IDE.) • Cannot submit change of address to subdomain in Google Webmaster Tools?

  I am pointing several domains to one URL, a URL which happens to include a subdomain. ALL of the domains are using 301 redirects to point to this new address. One of the older domains (which used to be a site) is a 'property' in Webmaster Tools, as is the new site (the one with the subdomain.) When registering a 'Change of Address' for the old site with WebmasterTools, it suggests the following method - Set up your content on your new domain. (done) Redirect content from your old site using 301 redirects. (done) Add and verify your new site to Webmaster Tools. (done) Then, directly below that, to proceed, it says Tell us the URL of your new domain: Your account doesn't contain any sites we can use for a change of address. Add and verify the new site, then try again. I have already submitted and verified the new site. The only reason I can fathom I am getting this error is because the new site includes a subdomain. Although I don't foresee getting punished for this, as I am correctly 301 redirecting traffic anyway, I'm curious as to why the Change of Address submission isn't working appropriately for me. Has anyone else had experience with this?

• To program in free time as a programmer, is to show that programming is passion. If not, is the programmer good? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer? A lot of blogs and advice on the web seem to suggest that in order to become a great developer, doing just your day job is not enough. For example, you should contribute to open source projects in your spare time, write smartphone apps, etc. In fact a lot of this advice seems to suggest that if you don't love programming enough to do it all day long then you're probably in the wrong career. That doesn't ring true with me. I enjoy my work, but when I come home from the office I'm not in the mood to jump straight back onto the computer and start coding away until bedtime. I only have a certain number of hours free time each day, and I'd rather spend them on other hobbies, seeing friends or going outside than in front of the computer. I do get a kick out of programming, and do hack around outside of work occasionally. I'm committed to my personal development and spend time reading tech blogs and books as a way to keep learning and becoming better. But that doesn't extend so far as to my wanting to use all my spare time for coding. Does this mean I'm not a 'true' software developer at heart? Is it possible to become a good software developer without doing extra outside your job? I'd be very interested to hear what you think.

• Secondment promotion promises

  I'm a Java developer at a large FTSE 30 company. My line manager approached me and asked if I'd like to be the teams lead developer. I was keen to accept. Initially he said I'd be acting-up for 3 months, then changed his tune and said I would be doing a 6 month secondment. During this time, he has got himself promoted and I have a new line manager. I have been very successful during this secondment and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive: both from my former line manager and current line manager. However, six months on, no lead role has been created in the organization and a new director has re-organised the structure of the team: two senior roles (senior Android and senior iOS) are going to be created. I feel a bit put-out that my secondment has amounted to nothing. I could have just done nothing and then applied for the senior role 6 months later (which I feel aren't as marketable as Lead developer). During my secondment I have basically become TA, senior developer, line manager and general go-to guy for all things (across Android and iOS). What do you think I should do, and has my company abused it's position? I feel they have offered a secondment to a role that they never really planned to create. During this time I have received no financial benefit for doing a more senior role.

It looks like GetVirtualPath was not implemented with large collections of routes in mind. I am using ASP.Net MVC 1.0.

But under XP the logic contained within FireAttackProc gets executed but none of the sound clips play. Is there a quick solution to this so the sound will play under XP? I ask for a quick solution because i am happy being able to execute fully in Vista/Win7 but would be great if there was a quick solution so it would be XP compitable also. Thank you.

I have an issue databinding a generic List of Car Rental Companies to a DataGridView when that list contains (one of its properties) anoother generic List of Car Makes. I also have a UserControl that I need to bind to this [inner] generic list ... Class CarRentalCompany contains: string Name, string Location, List CarMakes Class CarMake contains: string Name, bool isFord, bool isChevy, bool isOther The UserControl has a label for CarMake.Name and 3 checkboxes for each of the booleans of the class. HOw do I make this user control bindable for the class? In my form, I have a DataGridView binded to the CarRentalCompany object. The list CarMakes could be 0 or more items and I can add these as necessary. How do I establish the binding of CarRentalCompanies properly so CarMakes will bind accordingly?? • Removing Redundant Data from a List<T>

  I have a List of objects which are ordered. I would like to remove redundant objects where redundant does not necessarily mean duplicate. Here is an example: List<Point> points = new List<Point> { new Point(0, 10), new Point(1, 12), new Point(2, 16), new Point(3, 16), new Point(4, 16), new Point(5, 13), new Point(6, 16), }; I am interested in removing the new Point(3, 16) entry because it doesn't provide useful information; I already know that the element at 2=16 and the element at 4=16. The information that 3=16 doesn't do me any good in my application (because I already have the bounds {2,4}=16), so I would like to remove that entry. I'd also like to not that I want to keep the 5th and 6th entry because there are not consecutive entries where Y=16. Is there a slick way to do this with linq?
