• IntelliPoint & Intellitype upgrade to Mouse and Keyboard Center causing system freeze?

  I allowed Microsoft to upgrade my wireless keyboard 6000 v3.0 and mouse 6000 v2.0 from Intelliyada v 8.20.468 to what appears to be v9.1.486. This was some time ago, so I can't be certain but this upgrade might be causing my system to freeze on the logon screen (user selection) in Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. Mouse and keyboard don't work, but system seems to be running underneath. No indication in Event Viewer about keyboard/mouse driver issues. Might be problem with transceiver hardware. I now have the "Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center" UI which isn't very helpful (seems to be very metro) in debugging these drivers. I'm just looking to see if anyone else had problems upgrading to this new Intelliyada software for their MS keyboard and rodent.

• How can I install Java SDK on Windows 7 without messing up the system?

  I've installed Java SE Development Kit 1.6.0_31 32bit on Windows 7 64bit system, but this installation messed up my system, e.g. when I start Google Chrome I get error Your preferences can not be read Visual Studio 2010 after launching shows error that The Application Data folder for Visual Studio could not be created The shortcut to the Downloads folder in Windows Explorer no longer works. BTW this is pretty clean install, on other occasions after Java installation I had problems like this http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/808717-solved-c-windows-system32-config.html Is there a way to install Java SDK without messing up Windows 7? Or maybe this mess can be cleaned up after installation of Java, but how?

• Automated monitoring of a remote system that sends email alerts.

  I need to monitor a remote system where the only access I have is that I can subscribe to email alerts of completed/failed jobs. I would like a system that can monitor these emails and provide an SMS or other alert when: An email indicates failure. A process that was expected to complete by a given time has not. A process that was expected to complete N minutes after completion of another process has not completed. Are there any existing tools that allow this? I'd consider any option - SaaS, open-source, COTS, as long as I don't have to write it myself! Cheers, Blake

• Restrict whole system on certain cores except a few process?

  Hi I am running some latency sensitive program on a Linux machine (more specifically, CentOS 6), and I don't want the threads of the process being preempted. So in my plan, the first step is to set cpu affinity of the threads so that threads are running on separate cores, so they don't preempt each other. Then the second step is to make sure other processes in the system not running on these cores. So my question is: is it possible to restrict the whole system running on certain cores, except this process? This should apply to any newly created processes in the future.

• Possible to run system-config-network during %post kickstart?

  Hello, I'm currently trying to figure out a smart way to set IP, hostname, gateway and DNS settings during a kickstart (with user input during the kickstart). Doing this with firstboot after the install is not acceptable, so this must be done during %post. I've tried to run the system-config-network tool during post in tty6: #!/bin/sh chvt 6 exec < /dev/tty6 > /dev/tty6 /usr/bin/system-config-network-tui This doesn't work since for some reason I'm unable to catch user input. I would prefer to use built in tools to change this during post, rather than write my own bash script to do this, since using the provided tools is less likely to break anything. Does someone done anything like this or similar, and made it work? Thanks

• General Overview of Design Pattern Types

  Typically most software engineering design patterns fall into one of three categories in regards to types. Three types of software design patterns include: Creational Type Patterns Structural Type Patterns Behavioral Type Patterns The Creational Pattern type is geared toward defining the preferred methods for creating new instances of objects. An example of this type is the Singleton Pattern. The Singleton Pattern can be used if an application only needs one instance of a class. In addition, this singular instance also needs to be accessible across an application. The benefit of the Singleton Pattern is that you control both instantiation and access using this pattern. The Structural Pattern type is a way to describe the hierarchy of objects and classes so that they can be consolidated into a larger structure. An example of this type is the Façade Pattern.  The Façade Pattern is used to define a base interface so that all other interfaces inherit from the parent interface. This can be used to simplify a number of similar object interactions into one single standard interface. The Behavioral Pattern Type deals with communication between objects. An example of this type is the State Design Pattern. The State Design Pattern enables objects to alter functionality and processing based on the internal state of the object at a given time.

  Introduction This is the fifth post on Unity. You can find the introductory post here, the second post, on dependency injection here, a third one on Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) here and the latest so far, on writing custom extensions, here. This time we will talk about injecting simple values. An Inversion of Control (IoC) / Dependency Injector (DI) container like Unity can be used for things other than injecting complex class dependencies. It can also be used for setting property values or method/constructor parameters whenever a class is built. The main difference is that these values do not have a lifetime manager associated with them and do not come from the regular IoC registration store. Unlike, for instance, MEF, Unity won’t let you register as a dependency a string or an integer, so you have to take a different approach, which I will describe in this post.   Hi Linux Community, I find my self struggling with the slowness of windows OS once again. It's Time to change with the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit for I like to use a faster Operating System. My Hard Disk laptop has a RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partition they are both Primary. I Have the System Recovery DVD for Windows 64bit should anything bad happen. Here's the layout I used with windows before: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 284,89GB (Primary,ad Boot,Pagefile,Dump) * HP_TOOLS system partition FAT32 - 99MB (Primary) * (D:) RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) Here's the layout I wanted to make: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 60GB (Primary) (sda1) * (D:) Windows DATA partition (user files) NTFS - 120GB(Primary)(sda2);wanna share with Linux * Linux root Ext4 - 10GB (Extended)(sda3) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux home Ext3 - 90GB (Extended)(sda4) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux swap swap- RAM size, 3GB (sda5) * Linux root Ext3- 18GB (Extended) (sda6) (OpenSuse or Puppy or kubuntu) Here is my New Ubuntu 10.10 64bit layout in use now: * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) (sda1) * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 90GB (Primary) (sda2) * (D:) Windows 7 RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) (sda3) * Linux system partition EXTENDED - 195,1GB (Logical) * Linux root Ext4- 10GB (Extended) (sda4) * Linux swap swap- RAMx2 size, 6,1GB (sda5) * Linux home Ext3- 179GB (Extended) (sda6) When I installed Ubuntu,I didn't know if I could wipe all previous partitions,because of the RECOVERY partition. So I just made the space for my extended partition with GParted by deleting the HP_TOOLS (Fat32). By doing this I managed somehow to install Ubuntu 64 with Success. And I also made the partitions for the swap or a third Linux OS as Jordan suggested. But I couldn't actually make the partitions for the shared NTFS.(no option!) • Ambiguous in the namespace problem

  From the last few days, I was ignoring an error that keep coming at the compile time. I spent some two hours on it before but didn’t get it work. The error is quit confusing and of course difficult to manage. 'ApplicationSettingsBase' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Configuration' 'MailMessage' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Net.Mail' And there are couple of other similar errors that is pointing to some ambiguous references in my project.  The confusing part is that the MailMessage object throws similar error when you are importing the old and new email namespace. For example, Imports System.Web.Mail Imports System.Net.Mail So if you are only encountering ambiguous problem in MailMessage object. It is more possible that you have define both the namespaces in your code behind which is actually confusing the compiler about your referencing object. The quick solve for this problem is that remove Imports System.Web.Mail and it should work smooth. But with me, I never used the old asp.net mail namespace in my project. Then I start looking at my references and luckily I found the problem there. Follow the steps below to investigate the issue 1. Go to your project 2. Then references 3. Right click on “System” and see properties. it should point to the following path x:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.dll Where x is name of your operating system directory. This was the problem with my project. I had my operating system install on “D” drive and some how it is pointing to “C” drive which is the root cause of this problem. After that I verify all my references and found 5 –6 assemblies that are pointing to wrong path and get it worked. Also note, the problem can occur in any type of project either it is website , web application etc.

• Team Foundation Server 2012 Build Global List Problems

  My experience with the upgrade and use of TFS 2012 has been very positive. I did come across a couple of issues recently that tripped things up for a while. ISSUE 1 The first issue is that 2012 prior to Update 1 published an invalid build list item value to the collection global list. In 2010, the build global list, list item value syntax is an underscore between the build definition and the build number. In the 2012 RTM this underscore was replaced with a backslash, which is invalid.  Specifically, an upload of the global list fails when the backslash is followed at some point by a period. The error when using the API is: <detail ExceptionMessage="TF26204: The account you entered is not recognized. Contact your Team Foundation Server administrator to add your account." BaseExceptionName="Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Server.ValidationException"><details id="600019" http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03"http://schemas.microsoft.com/TeamFoundation/2005/06/WorkItemTracking/faultdetail/03" /></detail> when uploading the global list via the process editor the error is: This issue is corrected in Update1 as the backslash is changed to a forward slash. ISSUE 2 The second issue is that when upgrading from 2010 to 2012, the builds in 2010 are not published to the 2012 global list.  After the upgrade the 2012 global lists doesn’t have any builds and only builds run in 2012 are published to the global list. This was reported to the MSDN forums and Connect. To correct this I wrote a utility to pull all the builds and recreate the builds global list for each project in each collection.  This is a console application with a program.cs, a globallists.cs and a app.config (not published here). The utility connects to TFS 2012, loops through the collections or a target collection as specified in the app.config. Then loops through the projects, the build definitions, and builds.  It creates a global list for each project if that project has at least one build. Then it imports the new list to TFS.  Here’s the code for program and globalists classes. My Hard Disk laptop as a RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partition they are both Primary. I Have the System Recovery DVD for Windows 64bit should anything happen. Everything works just fine when connected (with additional drivers & Connman), but it takes about 5 minutes to connect to my network when i just started my computer! The strange thing is that the line number that the compiler indicates is 2 lines beyond the end of my file. In my demo project, it indicated line 177, but there's only 175 lines. Is there any way to make this work? I'd like to be able to assign to Circle directly without going through any typecasts or checking in my for loop itself.

• Should an Event that has no arguments define its own custom EventArgs or simply use System.EventArgs

  I have an event that is currently defined with no event arguments. That is, the EventArgs it sends is EventArgs.Empty. In this case, it is simplest to declare my Event handler as: EventHandler<System.EventArgs> MyCustomEvent; I do not plan on adding any event arguments to this event, but it is possible that any code could need to change in the future. Therefore, I am leaning towards having all my events always create an empty event args type that inheretis from System.EventArgs, even if there are no event args currently needed. Something like this: public class MyCustomEventArgs : EventArgs { } And then my event definition becomes the following: EventHandler<MyCustomEventArgs> MyCustomEvent; So my question is this: is it better to define my own MyCustomEventArgs, even if it does not add anything beyond inheriting from System.EventArgs, so that event arguments could be added in the future more easily? Or is it better to explicitly define my event as returning System.EventArgs, so that it is clearer to the user that there are no extra event args? I am leaning towards creating custom event arguments for all my events, even if the event arguments are empty. • jQuery's getScript and the local file system-- limitations/alternatives?

  Right now I'm working on a help-system which is based on a local file system. It is intended to be shipped with a product which is not used on internet-enabled machines, so it must be a stand alone webpage, without any dependencies on a web server. This introduces a few challenges. Namely, the directory structure that the files exist in require navigating "up and over" to access some .js files which are required to display the help system. This use to be implemented using the jQuery getScript function, but I have ran into some problems using this on the local file system. At first glance, it seemed that if my webpage was being served out of the C:/dev/webpage/html/ directory, and the files I needed were in C:/dev/webpage/js/(topic)/file.js, I could just build an absolute path (file:///...) and pass that into the getScript function. However, after testing this, it does not seem that the getScript function will let me go up a level from the html directory (where the html file is located which has the main code for the webpage). Unfortunately, I can not change the directory structure, nor can I change the .js file structure/format. Is there an alternative for loading/executing javascript files that are in a file structure where I need to go "up and over"? Thanks,

• How to solve the problem of not being informed of successful payments by the 3rd party system used b

  I have a subscription based website that interacts with a 3rd party system to handle the payments. The steps to process a new subscriber registration are as follow: The subscriber enters his/her details in the subscription form and click on the submit button. Assuming the details specified are valid, a new record is created in the database to store these details. The subscriber is then redirected to the website of the 3rd party system (similar to paypal) to process the payment. Once the payment is succesful, the 3rd party website then redirect the subscriber back to our website. At this time, I know that the payment was succesful, so the record in the database is updated to indicate that payment has been made successfully. A problem that I have found occurring quite often is that if a subscriber pays but does not complete the process correctly (e.g. uses the back browser, closes the window), his/her record in the database doesn't get updated about this. Accordingly, I don't know if s/he has paid by just looking the record and need to wait for the report from the 3rd party system to find this out. How do you solve this problem? PS. One of the main reasons to store their details into the database before the payment process is done is so they can come back to complete the payment without re-entering their details again. For example, when their credit cards were rejected by the 3rd party system and they need to sort this out with their financial institution which may take a while.

• C++/CLI HTTP Proxy problems...

  Hi, I'm trying(very hard) to make a small HTTP Proxy server which I can use to save all communications to a file. Seeing as I dont really have any experience in the area, I used a class from codeproject.com and some associated code to get started (It was made in the old CLI syntax, so I converted it). I couldn't get it working, so I added lots more code to make it work (threads etc), and now it sort of works. Basically, it recieves something from a client (I just configured Mozilla Firefox to route its connections through this proxy) and then routes it to google.com. After it sends Mozilla's data to google, recieves a responce, and sends that to Mozilla. This works fine, but then the proxy fails to recieve any data from Mozilla. It just loops in the Sleep(50) section. • Terminate function on System.in .. possible?

  I am currently working on a project where I have to make an agent to interact with a server. Each 50ms, the server will receive the last thing I outputted to System.out and send me a new set of lines as a 'state' through the System.in printstream to analyze and send my next message to System.out. Also, if the server receives multiple outputs from me, it only regards the most recent one. .. As for my question: My program originally constructed a tree and then analyzed each leaf node to see which would be optimal, and then waited around for the next input, but I can recursively do a deeper tree search that would make my output 'better' (and again and again to keep returning a better result). Using this and the fact that if the server receives multiple outputs, it only takes the most recent one, I could do each level, print my result and start the next level. But here comes my problem... I can't be stuck in some complex algorithm while I am supposed to receiving the next input as I will then miss it. So I was wondering if there is a way to cancel anything else I am doing when I receive something via System.in and then go back to the beginning of the function and start the search again with the new set of input (and rinse and repeat..) • Code producing System.NullReferenceException error for Membership.GetUser(). This is VB.Net (ASP.Net 4)

  I have a Default.aspx page that is not static. I have added functionality with datalist and sqldatasources. When a user logins he/she will see items like saved workouts, saved equipment, total replys, etc... This is based on getting the currently logged in user UserID. Quite simply this works great when the user is logged in. However, I do not want to force a user to login to view the Default page because it does have functionality on it that does not require login. When a user is not logged in of course I receive the [System.NullReferenceException] error. I understand the error well but I do not know how to code to fix it. That is where I need help. I will admit I am more designer than developer. However, I do know the exception error I am receivving is caused by me not setting a value in my code when a user is not logged in. I do not know how to do that and have for a week made unsuccessful attempts at writing the code. Both sets of code below compile for VB.Net/ASP.Net 4/Visual Studio 2010 without errors. However, I still get the System.NullReferenceException error if not logged in. I know it can be done but I do not know the right syntax.
