    On Twitter today I came across an announcement for a brand new on-line course in NetBeans 8. Since NetBeans 8 has been released during the past few months, the course is really very new. With my basic understanding of German, I've had no problem in following the course. The trainer speaks clearly and slowly and everything is very well structured. The course covers all the basics of NetBeans IDE. From getting set up to using all the key features. The quality of the videos is great and the content is clear and informative. Once you've bought the course, all the lessons are unlocked.     Internationalization (i18n) is a way of designing and developing a software product to function in multiple locales. This process involves identifying the locales that must be supported, designing features which support those locales, and writing code that functions equally well in any of the supported locales. Localization (L10n) is a process of modifying or adapting a software product to fit the requirements of a particular locale. This process includes (but may not be limited to) translating the user interface, documentation and packaging, changing dialog box geometries, customizing features (if necessary), and testing the translated product to ensure that it still works (at least as well as the original). i18n is a pre-requisite for L10n. Resource is 1. any part of a program which can appear to the user or be changed or configured by the user. 2. any piece of the program's data, as opposed to its code. Core product is the language independent portion of a software product (as distinct from any particular localized version of that product - including the English language version).   • Artists and music - Need Help Deciding on a CMS

    A friend has asked me to build a site with the following options: staff members must be able to add new music and artists to the page a gallery must be provided - it is also good if each artist has the ability to have his/her own smaller gallery users must be able to vote for artists users must be able to alter in discussions (forums or comments sections) staff members must be able to blog staff members must be able to write articles I did a small project where i actually implemented all of these features, but I want to use an existing content management system for all of these features so that future developers can, hopefully, more easy extend the website. And also, so that I don't have to provide too much documentation. I have never developed a website using an external CMS like Drupal or Wordpress and after seeing hours of tutorial videos of both systems, I still can't make up my mind on whether i should : a) use Drupal 7 b) use Wordpress 3 c) create my own cms I can imagine that staff members would also want to create content using iPhone or android based mobile devices, but this is not a required feature. Can someone, with experience, please tell me about their experiences with larger projects like this? The site will have approximately 400 000 - 500 000 visitors (not daily visitors, based on numbers from last year in a period of 4 months)

    I recently talked to some NetBeans users who were interested in a demonstration of the features that will be part of NetBeans IDE 7.2. (See the 7.2 New and Noteworthy for the full list.) One of the new features I demonstrated was this one. In an interface declaration, NetBeans IDE 7.2 will provide a hint, as can be seen in the sidebar below: When the lightbulb is clicked, or Alt-Enter is pressed, this will be shown: When the hint is invoked, the user will see this: And then the user will be able to enter the name of a class, and the name of a package, and assuming the defaults above are taken, a class with this content will be generated: package demo; public class WordProcessorImpl implements WordProcessor {     @Override     public String process(String word) {         throw new UnsupportedOperationException("Not supported yet.");     } } When I demonstrated the above, the response from the audience was: "That's cool.   • C#, .NET 4.5 and Visual Studio 2012

    While I continue my affair with iOS / Android (which is now my bread / butter literally ); I also have managed to keep myself excited enough for all of new windows Stuff. Thanks to Priti Pushpak (my wife) for all the amazing Windows Phone 7 apps she is creating and uploading on appHub… I kind of like refreshing feel of win8 and apps. I also have fair bit of exposure on iPhone / iPad; Mac apps and I do put my two cents for win8 as well. If not an instant hit; win8 apps surely grows on you. So eventually win8 platform is here to stay. (oh yes and I cannot tell you how much hope I have for WP8 platform as well). Personally I love IE for many reasons such as ease of use and stability.  I am cranked up to see what IE 9 does as it was retooled from the start. So this one should be big. Also, its bringing HTML 5 support now so we can have much richer applications. Its about time that HTML was revved to move from the old text like stuff to a better model.   • Is text-only mode a saving or a problem for battery savings?

    A friend is flying to the US from Europe and asked me a very thought-provoking question, which I am not remotely able to answer with substance so I am asking it here: How to absolutely maximise battery life on an Ubuntu (laptop) install? do not rush to mark this as duplicate, there is an important point here: does -GNOME- help or worsen battery life? Let me provide some context: The only task he needs to perform is: edit text files in Vim. He is unsure whether running GNOME will drain his battery life more or actually save him some battery life given the smarts of GNOME's power management features like "switch this peripheral to -power save- after X minutes..." (GNOME might just be a configuration front-end for settings that are governed by command-line utils for all I know?) He could perfectly well boot the system in text-only mode and use the automatic 6 virtual consoles for his needs, if that's a saving at all over running tmux (I think so because of all the smart buffering/history/etc the latter does by default?) Exactly how would you advise him to run his laptop during his flight? What I told him already: power off WiFi in the BIOS, not from the "GUI" power off Bluetooth switch off the courtesy light and use low monitor brightness play music off of his phone, not mp3blaster do not use his tiny portable mouse (and do not attach any other USB gimmicks like "screen light", etc) stop development services he will not be using, especially apache2, tomcat, dovecot, postgresql, etc. Potentially: - switch off his cron jobs? (he does an rsync + tar + 7za of his "work in progress" every so often) I think the above is standard stuff one could get off StackExchange, and with many duplicates... the core of this question is, I think: __ will running Ubuntu in text-only mode be a saving in terms of battery life or a problem? why? (provide some technical arguments) __ I think it will be a saving but I am also scared about "other things" detecting and enabling advanced chipset power management features only when some services are started.. and fear these "services" may be off in text-only mode?

    GeoTools 8.4 was very recently released, according to its active blog, and to celebrate here's a starting point for working with GeoTools on the NetBeans Platform: The sources of the above are below, as a Maven project, so this project can be used in any IDE or command line: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/show/versions/7.3/tutorials/geospatial/geotools/MyGeospatialSystem Though quite dated, the GeoTools NetBeans Quick Start is very helpful, especially since it used Maven too, but not the NetBeans Platform, unlike the above sample. From the point of view of NetBeans Platform developers, the GeoTools JMapPane class is very useful, providing the integration point between GeoTools and the rest of the NetBeans Platform application. Being integrated into the NetBeans Platform means that a host of standard features are now available to the GeoTools features, e.g., print functionality, which only requires a runtime dependency on the NetBeans Print API, together with the "print.printable" client property put into constructor of the TopComponent: By the way, I've spent some time now and again being confused about the difference between GeoTools and GeoToolkit. Here's an interesting starting point to beginning to understand the differences and history between them. Soon I'd like to have an example similar for the above for GeoToolkit.

  • Best CMS for review-type sites

    Is there an ideal CMS for making a review site? By review site, I mean like a restaurant review site where you have each entry belonging to different major categories like Cuisine and City. Then users can browse and filter by each or by combination (Chinese Food in Los Angeles, with suggestions of other Chinese restaurants in LA, etc). Furthermore, I'd want it to support other fields like price, parking, kid-friendliness, etc. And to have users be able to filter by those criteria. I've been told that with a combination of custom taxonomies, plug-ins and many clever little queries, that Wordpress 3.x can handle this. But I'm having a heck of a time with it getting into the nitty gritty, and that's where I find the community support is lacking. The sort of stuff you'd think would work in WP, like making one parent category for Cuisine and one for City, don't really work once you get further in and start trying to pull it all together. Then you find these blog posts where people say, "This example shows that one could create a huge movie review site using custom taxonomies..." but when you go and try it you hit all sorts of challenges and oddities that point a big long finger at Wordpress being in fact a blogging platform. The best I came up with was one category for the cuisine and one tag for the city, then I created a couple of custom tag-like taxonomies for the other features. It's quite a mess to try to figure out how to assemble all of that into a natural, intuitive site. I expect a few versions down the road WP will be able to do these sorts of sites out of the box. So I thought I'd take a step back before I run back into the Wordpress fray and find out if maybe there is another platform better suited to this sort of relational content site. Directory scripts in some ways offer many of the features I'm looking for, but I need something more flexible and, hopefully, interactive (comments, reviews). I'm especially looking for feedback from people who've crafted sites like this. Thanks!

  • Making a non-trivial Image and Video Gallery with a really nice interface

    Short part: I'm starting to build an Image and Video Gallery for our intranet. It's pretty much like an image gallery with video thumbnails that play on click. It's just good to keep that in mind because caching and streaming happen in very different ways there. It will serve to browse our reference database, which will also contain searching, tagging and voting. There are 3 features that I need to begin with: Quick preview of thumbnails from each Gallery Fast zoom in / out Animated scrolling Now to the long part, since I can't seem to reduce this: I hope this question belongs here. Maybe people can read this through and identify with it, specially since I expect answers to be pretty specific. The first plan was getting Apple's mobile me gallery as base, because it just so happens to have all those 3 features. If you've never seem it, you should check it out. Move the mouse over each collection and you'll get a nice preview "per pixel". Carousel got a really good scrolling, not just because of the pretty effect. I like it much more than cooliris, but it would be nice to have it in several rows, maybe without the magnifying effect... Then it could be all in the same place with the zoom. The more the features blend-in together, the better. Zooming out with the mouse, scrolling by dragging, once the zoom is really out it becomes a browsing through galleries, with the quick-show preview of each, all properly cached and fast. That'd be perfect. A very compelling interface will be important in this project. Well, my point here is just describing what I need and hope to hear from people with more experience in all that stuff of what's already done and what I'd have to do myself. And how (i.e. which framework to use) to do it. To begin with, I've found a gallery demo and its source code (I think it was from here, but the link seems broken now). I guess it was made in SproutCore, which is what mobileme was based upon. Definitely with JQuery (which already seems a little slow). But I'm still missing two features there: the carousel and the fast zoom (it's just not as slow as the zoom in this demo with cappuccino). Then I've found a supposedly better one with a pretty good and similar zoom, that I'm not sure if it's using any framework and is already in php. Right now it'd be better having just the HTML, no server-side, since I'm building interface first. So, can anyone point directions? There are way too many options! Should I look for another solution closer to what I need, or try and tweak this one? I'm not familiar with any framework at all. Sorry for bringing this question that I will have to answer myself anyway sooner or later and sorry that I couldn't make this smaller. Thanks.
