• How to automatically display relationships in logical diagram?

  Consider a Logical Model where Entity A and Entity B are connected via Relationship Z. If I create a Logical Diagram (note: not another logical MODEL), I am able to drag Entity A and Entity B onto the diagram. Since the Logical Model already "knows" that Entity A and Entity B have a relationship, I would like to be able to easily add it to my logical diagram. I am already aware of the "Show Symbols" option whereby I can select the specific relationship that I want and have it appear. That is not a solution for me. The problem is that I have a LARGE logical model consisting of HUNDREDS of Entities and their various relationships. I then need to create application-specific diagrams consisting of a subset of those entities. I can easily identify and drag the 50+ entities onto a new diagram. But identifying and selecting all the associations is an exercise in frustration. Is there an option or some sort of feature that I'm missing - or any other trick - that would allow me to add only the relationships between selected entities or all entities on a diagram?

• How to document an existing small web site (web application), inside and out?

  We have a "web application" which has been developed over the past 7 months. The problem is, it was not really documented. The requirements consisted of a small bulleted list from the initial meeting 7 months ago (it's more of a "goals" statement than software requirements). It has collected a number of features which stemmed from small verbal or chat discussions. The developer is leaving very soon. He wrote the entire thing himself and he knows all of the quirks and underlying rules to each page, but nobody else really knows much more than the user interface side of it; which of course is the easy part, as it's made to be intuitive to the user. But if someone needs to repair or add a feature to it, the entire thing is a black box. The code has some minimal comments, and of course the good thing about web applications is that the address bar points you in the right direction towards fixing a problem or upgrading a page. But how should the developer go about documenting this web application? He is a bit lost as far as where to begin. As developers, how do you completely document your web applications for other developers, maintainers, and administrative-level users? What approach do you use, where do you start, do you have a template? An idea of magnitude: it uses PHP, MySQL and jQuery. It has about 20-30 main (frontend) files, along with about 15 included files and a couple folders of some assets. So overall it's a pretty small application. It interfaces with 7 MySQL tables, each one well-named, so I think the database end is pretty self-explanatory. There is a config.inc.php file with definitions of consts like the MySQL user details, some from/to emails, and URLs which PHP uses to insert into emails and pages (relative and absolute paths, basiecally). There is some AJAX via jQuery. Please comment if there is any other information that would help you help me and I will be glad to edit it in.

• Rails: Duplicate functionality across controllers? A humble plea.

  So I'm working with authlogic, and I'm trying to duplicate the login functionality to the welcome page, so that you can log in by restful url or by just going to the main page. No, I don't know if we'll keep that feature, but I want to test it out anyway. Here's the error message: RuntimeError in Welcome#index Called id for nil, which would mistakenly be 4 -- if you really wanted the id of nil, use object_id The code is below. Basically, what's happening is the index view (the first code snippet) is sending the information from the form to the create method of user_sessions controller. At this point, in theory, it create should just pick up, but it doesn't. PLEASE help. Please. I've been doing this for about 8 hours. I checked Google. I checked IRC. I checked every book I could find. • Plugin-like architecture in .NET

  I'm trying to implement a plug-in like application. I know there are already several solution out there but this is just going to be proof of the concept, nothing more. The idea would be to make the application main application almost featureless by default and then let the plugins know about each other, having them have implement all the needed features. A couple of issues arise: I want the plugins at runtime to know about each other through my application. That wouldn't mean that at code-time they couldn't reference other plugin's assemblies so they could use its interfaces, only that plugin-feature initialization should be always through my main app. For example: if I have both plugins X and Y loaded and Y wants to use X's features, it should "register" its interest though my application to use its features. I'd have to have a kind of "dictionary" in my application where I store all the loaded plugins. After registering for interest in my application, plugin Y would get a reference to X so it could use it. Is this a good approach? When coding plugin Y that uses X, I'd need to reference X's assembly, so I can program against its interface. That has the issue of versioning. What if I code my plugin Y against an outdated version of plugin X? Should I always use a "central" place where all assemblies are, having there always the up to date versions of the assemblies? Are there by chance any books out there that specifically deal with these kinds of designs for .NET? Thanks

  I have a table with two child tables. For each record in the parent table, I want one and only one record in one of the child tables -- not one in each, not none. How to I define that? Here's the backstory. Feel free to criticize this implementation, but please answer the question above, because this isn't the only time I've encountered it: I have a database that holds data pertaining to user surveys. It was originally designed with one authentication method for starting a survey. Since then, requirements have changed, and now there are two different ways someone could sign on to start a survey. Originally I captured the authentication token in a column in the survey table. Since requirements changed, there are three other bits of data that I want to capture in authentication. So for each record in the survey table, I'm either going to have one token, or a set of three. All four of these are of different types, so my thought was, instead of having four columns where either one is going to be null, or three are going to be null ( or even worse, a bad mashup of either of those scenarios ), I would have two child tables, one for holding the single authentication token, the other for holding the three. Problem is, I don't know offhand how to define that in DDL. I'm using MySQL, so maybe there's a feature that MySQL doesn't implement that lets me do this.

• Output error in comparing characters from two strings

  I'm stuck with my a piece of code I'm creating. My IDE is Eclipse and when I use its debugging feature, to trace what's happening on each line, it outputs perfectly. The client's interests are stored in the format "01010", where each 1 means they are interested in that activity, each 0 means they are not. My code compares each character of every client's string with every other client's string and outputs the results for all client's that don't have the same name and have three or more interests in common. When I run this code through Java's debugger, it outputs fine - but when I click run project or compile, I just get a blank screen. Any ideas?

• Which DVCS would work best on Windows for my scenario?

  At work I use ClearCase and SourceSafe, but have found some time to do some time to code for myself enroute thanks to a disposable laptop. However, I wish I had a lightweight VCS on my system using which I would be able to make changes to my code during the commute and then push/grab them from my Linux systems. I use git on my home system, but I can't really get it working on Windows. I don't want all that cygwin hack. If it does not run natively on Windows, it just won't do. What have you guys tried on your Windows system? Something that YOU use. The big player at the moment seems to be Mercurial? What would be best for a one (or maybe two) man team? I just need to maintain : Versioned copies of source code. Checking in and out should be as less obtrusive as possible. I am looking forward to a multiple Undo kind of feature (like that in an EMacs buffer) but persistent. I really like the way git keeps track of lines moving between files in a source code set I should be able to move part(s)/sub tree(s) of the source tree (each sub tree implies a module/plugin to my the main software I am building) to an archival system either completly or partially and restore them back from the archive as and when required and the system should track any changes to this tree as well. I actually want to experiment with my code as much as possible without me manually keeping track of what I modified and what I need to undo once I try out some idea, so that I am back to where I want to continue from. • How to implement the "System.out.println(ClassName::MethodName <then my message>)" of Eclipse in Netbeans?

  I would like to know if there is the same feature as in eclipse to automatically generate and print the System.out.println(ClassName::MethodName <then my message>) functionality (which will print the class name and method name for debugging in the console) in Netbeans also. For example, in Eclipse Editor, Typing syst + Ctrl+ Space will auto generate a System.out.println(ClassName::MethodName ) type output in the console. Is such a method available in Netbeans? As of now, I have only two methods here in Netbeans: sout + Tab (System.out.println()) and soutv + Tab (System.out.println(prints the variable used just above the line)) automatically. Let me rephrase, instead of myMethod1, I want to get the enclosing method name. • Custom stream wrappers, what could they be useful for in web applications?

  I suppose the concept is language agnostic, but I don't know what it's called in other languages. In PHP they're Stream Wrappers. In short, a wrapper class that allows manipulation of a streamable resource (resource that can be read to/written to/seek into, such as a file, a db, an url). For example, in a template engine (a view), upon including a template file such as: include "view.wrapper://path/to/my/template/file.phtml"; my custom wrapper, declared elsewhere and associated with "view.wrapper", would first intercepts the file to replace such things as short tags (<?=) with a more verbose counterpart (<?php echo). This allows developers to use short tags in views, even if the server isn't set to allow it. It can also be applied to the preprocessing of views pseudo syntax such as {@myVar} (e.g. replacing it with $this->myVar). This is only one application of custom stream wrappers, but the feature seems powerful enough to make me think that there are others that could make life a lot simpler for developers. What have you built, or thought about building, custom stream wrappers for? where have you seen some interesting implementations? I'm particularly interested in their applications in web development.

• Is there a point to have multiple VS projects for an ASP.NET MVC application?

  I'm developing MVC application where I currently have 3 projects in solution. Core (it is supposed to be for Repositories, Business Classes, Models, HttpModules, HttpFilters, Settings, etc.) Data access (Data provider, for instance SqlDataProvider for working with SQL Server datastore - implements Repository interfaces, XmlDataProvider - also implements Repository interfaces but for local XML files as datastore) ASP.NET MVC project (all the typical stuff, UI, controllers, content, scripts, resources and helpers). I have no Models in my ASP.NET MVC project. I've just run into a problem because of that coz I want to use the new DataAnnotation feature in MVC 2 on my Bussiness class, which are, as said in Core, however I have I want to be able to localize the error messages. This where my problem starts. I cannot use my Resources from MVC project in Core. The MVC project references Core and it cannot be vice-versa. My options as I see them are: 1) Move Resources out but this would require correcting a whole bunch of Views and Controllers where I reference them, 2) Make a complete restructure of my app What are your thoughts on this? Also, Should I just move everything business related into Models folder in MVC project?? Does it even make any sense to have it structured like that, because we can just make subfolders for everything under MVC project? The whole Core library is not intended to ever be used for anything else, so there actually no point of compiling it to a separate DLL. Suggestions appreciated.

• AppleScript: open frontmost file with another application

  I'd like to write an AppleScript program to do the following (Automator would be fine too): I want to open the current active TextMate file (possibly there are several tabs open and other windows) with the application Transmit 2. (This will upload the file over FTP using Transmit's DockSend feature.) Here I've used a specific application (TextMate) but ideally I'd like it to work for any file currently active in any application. Ultimately I will assign a keyboard shortcut to run it. Here's what I have so far: tell application (path to frontmost application as text) set p to path of document 1 end tell tell application "Finder" open POSIX file p using "Transmit 2" end tell I've tried many variants of this and nothing works. EDIT: I have found this page: http://wiki.macromates.com/Main/Howtos and someone has made exactly the script I'm looking for: tell application "Transmit" to open POSIX file "$TM_FILEPATH" This is for Transmit [not 2] and I think for TextMate pre v2. I get the error (when using Transmit 2): Transmit 2 got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. One of the updates to v2 has broken it (not sure which one).

  I would like to find out if anyone has existing work surrounding formatting an IQueryable instance back into a LINQ C# syntax inside a string. It'd be a nice-to-have feature for an internal LINQ-to-SQL auditing framework I'm building. • Strategy for animation a lot of LED's - thread?, UIView animations? NSOperation? (iPhone)

  Hi I have to do some different views containing 72 LED lights. I built an LED Class so I can loop through the LED's and set them to different colors (Green, Red, Orange, Blue None etc.). The LED then loads the appropriate .png. This works fine, I loop over the LED's and set them. Now I know that at some time they will need to not just turn on/off change color, but will have to turn on with a small delay. Like an equalizer. I have a 5-10 views containing the 72 LED's and I would like to achieve the above with the minimum amount of memory/CPU strain. for(LED *l in self.ledArray) { [l display:Green]; } I simply loop as shown above and inside the LED is a switch case that does the correct logic. If this were actual LED's and a microController I would use sleep(100) or similar in the loop, but I would really like to avoid stuff like that for obvious reasons. I was thinking that doing a performOnThread withDelay would really be consuming, so would UIView animation changing the alpha and NSOperation would also be a lot of lifting for a small feature. Is there a both efficient and clever way to go around this? Thanks for any inspiration given:)

• rotating UITableViewController manually

  Hi there, I am trying to do something I am not really sure is possible :) I have application that is in portrait mode and doesn't react to device rotation. Almost all parts of app work best in portrait so I disabled autorotation. But one part should be viewed in landscape. I just drawed my view rotated by 90 degrees and with this forced user to rotate device (again no autorotation). Everything was ok until I added UITableViewController that is invoked from this (and only from this) rotated view. Table view is of course in portrait mode, so user has to rotate device again, which is not really user friendly experience. My problem is, how to manually rotate table view so it is in landscape mode without using autorotation feature. I was able to rotate it using transform, but I can't position it properly. Is this right way of doing this or did I missed something that would make this trivial task? I don't want to use autorotation because both part are pretty separated from each other and each of them would be almost useless in other's mode

  What I'd like to do is take some action using the value returned by every method in a class. So for instance, if I have a class Order which has a method public Customer GetCustomer() { Customer CustomerInstance = // get customer return CustomerInstance; } Let's say I want to log the creation of these - Log(CustomerInstance); My options (AFAIK) are: Call Log() in each of these methods before returning the object. I'm not a fan of this because it gets unwieldy if used on a lot of classes with a lot of methods. It also is not an intrinsic part of the method's purpose. Use composition or inheritance to layer the log callon the Order class similar to: public Customer GetCustomer() { Customer CustomerInstance = this.originalCustomer.GetCustomer(); Log(CustomerInstance); return CustomerInstance; } I don't think this buys me anything over #1. Create extension methods on each of the returned types: Customer CustomerInstance = Order.GetCustomer().Log(); which has just as many downsides. I'm looking to do this for every (or almost every) object returned, automatically if possible, without having to write double the amount of code. I feel like I'm either trying to bend the language into doing something it's not supposed to, or failing to recognize some language feature that would enable this. Possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

  Hello, How i can set redirect url for virtual directory in iis 7.0.I have installed lates url rewrite module 2. ? I could explain my problem with exsample. I have website on my iis 7.0 server: www.mysite.com I desided to create virtual directory sales under my site which is pointing to website root directory.Now I need create redirect url for the vdir. The vdir is pointing same virtual root directory as my site root is The big idea is that i can write on browser www.mysite/sales and i will automaticly redirect to url www.mysite.com?productid=200. I tried to make redirect with rewite url for vdir(not website), but I always get this error message : cannot add duplicate colletion entry of type 'rule' with unique key key attribute 'name' set to "test".This happens when i am pointing for virtual vdir and try to add rule. I can add rules to website level,but rules doesn work. I mean url www.mysite/sales gives me follwing error. I know that key is unique I checked it from web.config. This kind of feature was really easy use in IIS 6.0, just point vdir with your mouse and set properties--a redirect to url. Please some one explain what is right way to do it in IIS 7.0

  I am trying to add a feature to my app that would allow me to enable/disable the "Call Me" button based on whether or not I am at [home|the office]. I created a model in the database called setting, it looks like this: class setting(models.Model): key = models.CharField(max_length=200) value = models.CharField(max_length=200) Pretty simple. There is currently one row, available, the value of it is the string True. I want to be able to transparently pass variables to the templates like this: {% if available %} <!-- Display button --> {% else %} <!-- Display grayed out button --> {% endif %} Now, I could add logic to every view that would check the database, and pass the variable to the template, but I am trying to stay DRY. What is the best way to do this? UPDATE I created a context processor, and added it's path to the TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS, but it is not being passed to the template def available(request): available = Setting.objects.get(key="available") if open.value == "True": return {"available":True} else: return {} UPDATE TWO If you are using the shortcut render_to_response, you need to pass an instance of RequestContext to the function. from the django documentation: If you're using Django's render_to_response() shortcut to populate a template with the contents of a dictionary, your template will be passed a Context instance by default (not a RequestContext). To use a RequestContext in your template rendering, pass an optional third argument to render_to_response(): a RequestContext instance. Your code might look like this: def some_view(request): # ... return render_to_response('my_template.html', my_data_dictionary, context_instance=RequestContext(request)) Many thanks for all the help!

• Maintaining Mouse Control in Embedded swfs (i.e. parent / child ) Flash cs4 AS3

  Hello to all, I have an issue that is driving me nuts. I have an AS3 application that performs a calculation based upon user's input to determine a result. The purpose is to predict the results of a horse's coat color based on the genetics. The results are given in a 3d model swfs that are loaded into the "shell's" UILoader Component and they rotate. I have an example of this here: http://www.provideoshow.com/coatcalculator/coat_calculator.html As you can see this works fine with an "auto-rotate" feature. The problem is that my client wants the 3d models to be rotated by the user's mouse. I have the 3d models rotating with the mouse but they only work when they are stand alone swfs. They break when they are loaded into the shell. Some research informs me that the issue is in the stage properties and the parent not receiving them from the child. I've gotten some advice that I need to pass a reference to the shell's stage and preferably in the init function. This is the code I have in the child which is loaded as a class public function Main_master_withmouse() { if(stage) { _stage = stage; init(stage); } } protected function init(rootStage:Stage):void { if(rootStage) { _stage = rootStage; } else { _stage = this.stage; } sceneWidth = _stage.stageWidth createChildren(); startRendering(); } I can't figure out what to put in the parent to pass the reference to its stage. • Silverlight Export Datagrid to Excel (without roundtrip)

  I've got a silverlight 2 app with a Datagrid and a button for exporting it to Excel by making a trip back to the server. I can create an HTML string representing the datagrid. I'd like to attach this string to an html element, setting MIME type=application/vnd.ms-excel and have a prompt show up asking if I'd like to open or save the xls file. After all if ASP can do this ... <% The main feature of this technique is that %> <% you have to change Content type to ms-excel.%> Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel" <TABLE> <TR><TD>2</TD></TR> <TR><TD>3</TD></TR> <TR><TD>=SUM(A1:A2)</TD></TR> </TABLE> ... it seems like I should be able to do something similar from within Silverlight, pushing it onto the HTML DOM. • Do Distributed Version Control Systems promote poor backup habits?

  In a DVCS, each developer has an entire repository on their workstation, to which they can commit all their changes. Then they can merge their repo with someone else's, or clone it, or whatever (as I understand it, I'm not a DVCS user). To me that flags a side-effect, of being more vulnerable to forgetting to backup. In a traditional centralised system, both you as a developer and the people in charge know that if you commit something, it's held on a central server which can have decent backup solutions in place. But using a DVCS, it seems you only have to push your work to a server when you feel like sharing it. It's all very well you have the repo locally so you can work on your feature branch for a month without bothering anyone, but it means (I think) that checking in your code to the repo is not enough, you have to remember to do regular pushes to a backed-up server. It also means, doesn't it, that a team lead can't see all those nice SVN commit emails to keep a rough idea what's going on in the code-base? Is any of this a real issue?

  I'm making a tool that does multiple things, and I'm onto the last feature for now: You type in a date and it tells you what day of the week it would be on that date. So I have two problems here: I can't use I can't use arguments, it doesn't like them On the last line, I can't use jTextArea2.setText(d0); because it doesn't like that either...
