  Hello, i get this error when i trying to create a new project in team project. The server is right, i check all ports. • SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation and the Phantom of SQL Server 2005 Express

  Today I’ve happy started to install SQL Server 2008R2 on my development machine, which has this software installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU5 Visual Studio 2008 SP1 BOL October 2009 AdventuresWorks2008 Databases SR4 Visual Studio 2010 RTM So, all the basic standard stuff. SQL Server 2008 R2 installation went smooth ‘till somewhere in the middle, where the rule engine checks that software pre-requisite are satisfied before starting to copy files. Here I had this @][@@[?!?! error: “The SQL Server 2005 Express Tools are installed. To continue, remove the SQL Server 2005 Express Tools.” Fun enough, I don’t have and I’ve never had SQL Server 2005 Express on my machine. Armed with patience I analyzed the install log here C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\yyyymmdd_hhmmss\Detail.txt and I’ve found that the rule “Sql2005SsmsExpressFacet” is the one in charge of this check and it look for existance of the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM (on x86) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\ShellSEM (on x64) In my registry I’ve found that key existsing, due to the installation of the uber-cool Red-Gate SQL Search. I removed the registry key and here it is! SQL Server 2008 R2 is installing while I’m writing this post. A note to Microsoft: can you please add more detailed information on the setup while such error happens. Just saying “you have SQL Server 2005 Express installed” is not enough. Please show us what the rule look for and why it has failed directly in the Detailed Report, so that we don’t have to spend time to look for the needle in the logs. • Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

  If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world.  It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002.  The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon.  His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that.  Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more.  And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating.  The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video:     Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development.  Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs?  Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say.  But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon.  That’s because the ASP.NET site within UserVoice is taking votes on this very issue.  Just click this link and vote! • FIX: Visual Studio Post Build Event Returns &ndash;1 when it should not.

  I had written a Console Application that I run as part of my post build for other projects..  The Console application logs a series of messages to the console as it executes.  I use the Environment.ExitCode value to specify an error or success condition.  When the application executes without issue, the ExitCode is 0, when there is a problem its –1. As part of my logging, I log the value of the exit code right before the application terminates.  When I run this executable from the command line, it behaves as it should; error scenarios return –1 and success scenarios return 0.   When I run the same command line as part of the post-build event, Visual Studio reports the exit code as –1, even when the application reports the exit code as 0.   A snippet of the build output follows: Verbose: Exiting with ExitCode=0 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073: The command ""MGC.exe" "-TargetPath=C:\TFS\Solutions\Research\Source\Framework\Services\Identity\STS\_STSBuilder\bin\Debug\_STSBuilder.dll" C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073:  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Microsoft.Common.targets(3397,13): error MSB3073: " exited with code -1. The Application returns a 0 exit code.  But visual studio is reporting an error.  Why? The answer is in the way I format my log messages.  Apparently Visual Studio watches the messages that get streamed to the the output console.  If those messages match a pattern used by visual studio to communicate errors, Visual Studio assumes an error has occurred in the executable and returns a –1.  This post details the formats used by Visual Studio to determine error conditions. In my case, the presence of the colon was tripping up Visual studio.  I Replaced all occurrences of colon with an equal sign and Visual Studio once again respected the exit code of the application. Verbose= Exiting with ExitCode=0 ========== Build: 3 succeeded or up-to-date, 0 failed, 0 skipped ==========

  I created a new windows 7 SP1 base image. Everything is all fine and dandy with that. So i am now installing standard applications I would like Quicktime to manage .mov files. The only problem is WMP (Windows Media Player) won't give up the association to .mov files. It's driving me crazy... i've been reading threads on how to fix file associations. I would like to do it via registry, powershell or cmdline. • Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

  I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). The code I have works well for Outlook 2010: Private Sub btnEmail_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnEmail.Click CreateMailItem() End Sub Private Sub CreateMailItem() Dim application As New Application Dim mailItem As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MailItem = CType(application.CreateItem( _ Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlItemType.olMailItem), Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MailItem) 'Me.a(Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlItemType.olMailItem) mailItem.Subject = "This is the subject" mailItem.To = "[email protected]" mailItem.Body = "This is the message." mailItem.Importance = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlImportance.olImportanceLow mailItem.Display(True) End Sub However, I cannot get this to work for 2013. I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. • Rant - Why is Windows Azure not available in Africa?

  Yesterday at the .NET user group meeting in Kampala Uganda  I gave a talk on cloud computing with Windows Azure  (details will be in my next blog post). The guys where excited. Without owning they own inftrastucture and at low cost they can build scalable , highly available applications. Not quite. Azure accounts are only available to people in particular countries - none from Africa. I attended PDC in 2008 when Microsoft unleashed Windows Azure. One of the case studies to show the benefits ofr cloud computing was a project in Africa for an education service in Ethiopia. The point they where making was that the cloud was perfect for scenarios where computing infrastructure is not sophiscated, like Ethiopia. Perfect , i thought. So i got my beta account from PDC and started playing around in the cloud. Then Azure goes live , my beta account does not work any more and I cant pay because am from Uganda. Microsoft , this sucks. I dont know the reasons for Microsoft doing this, but am sure we can work out something. We in Africa need the cloud more than anybody else in the world. Setting up data centers that are higly scalable and available for our startups is not an option we have. But we also cant pay for cloud computing with Microsoft. Microsoft, we know we are a tiny insigficant market for a company your size, but your excluding us only continues to widen the digital divide. Microsoft , how about you have a reseller model for cloud computing. Instead of trying to deal direclty with each client you have local partners who help you sell and bill your cloud services. I think that would lead to Windows Azure being available in Africa. I can help you resell in Uganda.

• How does formatting works with a PowerShell function that returns a set of elements?

But even if only 8 columns are shown, there are plenty of other properties (as foo | gm is showing). What is causing this function to show only this 8 properties? I'm actually trying to build a similar function that is returning complex objects from a 3rd party .Net library. The library is flatting a 2 level hierarchy of objects : function Actual { $someDotnetObject.ACollectionProperty.ASecondLevelCollection | % { $_ } } This method is dumping the objects in a list form (one line per property). How can I control what is displayed, keeping the actual object available?
