• Web and Flex developer career question [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: should i concentrate on logical and puzzles part in programming, i want to be a web (flex)developer? I'm a computer science student and have been learning Flex and Actionscript 3.0 for 4 months. I know it's easy to program in MXML, and Actionscript 3.0 is pretty easy with bunch of classes, but when I try to code in C++ or C, I struggle, I feel I'm being inefficient and it scares me. Since I'm a student, I've no experience in developing algorithms and tough program solving? I'd like to be a web developer. Does a web developer need strong fundamentals when it comes to things such as complex algorithms and high end coding?

• How to update a game off a database

  I am currently writing a sports strategy management game (cricket) in PHP, with a MYSQL database, and I have come across one stumbling block - how do I update games where neither player is online? Cricket is a game played between two players, and when they (or one of them) is online then everything is fine; but what if neither player is online? This occurs when championship games are played, and these games need to happen at certain times for game reasons. At the moment I have a private web page that updates every 5 seconds, and each time it loads all games are updated; but then I have the problem that when my private web page stops (for example my computer crashes or my web browser plays up) the game stops updating! Any suggestions?

• Settings for multiple monitors are not stored

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04. on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I connected an external monitor as a second display. The laptop stands under the external screen. The laptop has a native resolution of 1440x900 (16:10), the external monitor 1280x1024 (5:4). There are two graphic adapters: one internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD and an discrete ATI card. Currently, the integrated Intel is enabled. I use the Display application to arrange the position of the monitors so it look like this: The problem: Whenever I restart my computer the configuration gets lost. First, the displays are mirrored instead of extended. I have to press Fn + F7 two times to switch to extended mode. Second, the Display settings still look like this: I know this worked once when I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tell since when it does not work. Do you know how I can permanently store the settings?

• How/where to run the algorithm on large dataset?

  I would like to run the PageRank algorithm on graph with 4 000 000 nodes and around 45 000 000 edges. Currently I use neo4j graph databse and classic relational database (postgres) and for software projects I mostly use C# and Java. Does anyone know what would be the best way to perform a PageRank computation on such graph? Is there any way to modify the PageRank algorithm in order to run it at home computer or server (48GB RAM) or is there any useful cloud service to push the data along the algorithm and retrieve the results? At this stage the project is at the research stage so in case of using cloud service if possible, would like to use such provider that doesn't require much administration and service setup, but instead focus just on running the algorith once and get the results without much overhead administration work.

• How can I get data off of a (probably) very corrupt drive?

  So, my younger brother wanted my help today. Apparently, he was helping a friend install Ubuntu to his laptop, and midway through the install (on a filled hard-drive with Windows 8, from the liveusb thing): 1) They realized that they had chosen "Erase and install" accidentally and decided the best course of action was to (in the middle of an install, remember) 2) Force shutdown the computer. After I had replaced my eyeballs back into their sockets, my bro asked if I could do anything about his friend's data, which he wanted back. This, however, drifts out of my normal comfort zone. I know this about the install: 1) It was on a fairly new Windows 8 laptop, so it had whatever filesystem it uses nowadays on the entire drive 2) They didn't choose the "zero out drive data" option 3) They stopped the install at some point (not sure if before or after wipe) I can imagine that it now has two corrupted filesystems on it (whatever Windows 8 was on and ext3) and that some of the data still exists (assuming it wasn't overwritten already). Is there anything that can be done for whatever data is left on the drive?

• Can't connect to Wireless Access Point after installing proprietary drivers

  I had Windows Vista Basic installed on my computer and I replaced it with Ubuntu 10.10. I then preceded to do the following: I downloaded the wireless driver from 'additional drivers' I enabled my wireless card And now it won't connect to my router but my game systems will. Then I downloaded WiFi-Radar  which did not seem to fix the problem. I still cannot connect to the Internet. I have done an exhaustive search of the Internet and turned up nothing.

• Moving around/avoiding obstacles

  I would like to write a "game", where you can place an obstacle (red), and then the black dot tries to avoid it, and get to the green target. I'm using a very easy way to avoid it, if the black dot is close to the red, it changes its direction, and moves for a while, then it moves forward to the green point. How could I create a "smooth" path for the computer controlled "player"? Edit: Not the smoothness is the main point, but to avoid the red blocking "wall" and not to crash into it and then avoid it. How could I implement some path finding algorithm if I just have basically 3 points? (And what would it make the things much more complicated, if you could place multiple obstacles?)

• Installation stops at a black screen on a Dell XPS 15z

  This is my first time trying to install a Linux distro, and I'm having a bit of a time with it. I've tried to install Ubuntu on my new Dell XPS 15z using the Wubi Windows installer (on x64 Windows 7 Pro) and I've also tried mounting the ISO to a USB drive as explained on ubuntu.com. Unfortunately, both methods hit the same problem: after some text stuff, the screen turns off. I still have control over things like keyboard brightness, so it's not that the computer's going idle or anything like that. Any ideas?

• Row Count Plus Transformation

  As the name suggests we have taken the current Row Count Transform that is provided by Microsoft in the Integration Services toolbox and we have recreated the functionality and extended upon it. There are two things about the current version that we thought could do with cleaning up Lack of a custom UI You have to type the variable name yourself In the Row Count Plus Transformation we solve these issues for you. Another thing we thought was missing is the ability to calculate the time taken between components in the pipeline. An example usage would be that you want to know how many rows flowed between Component A and Component B and how long it took. Again we have solved this issue. Credit must go to Erik Veerman of Solid Quality Learning for the idea behind noting the duration. We were looking at one of his packages and saw that he was doing something very similar but he was using a Script Component as a transformation. Our philosophy is that if you have to write or Copy and Paste the same piece of code more than once then you should be thinking about a custom component and here it is. The Row Count Plus Transformation populates variables with the values returned from; Counting the rows that have flowed through the path Returning the time in seconds between when it first saw a row come down this path and when it saw the final row. It is possible to leave both these boxes blank and the component will still work.   All input columns are passed through the transformation unaltered, you are not permitted to change or add to the inputs or outputs of this component. Optionally you can set the component to fire an event, which happens during the PostExecute phase of the execution. This can be useful to improve visibility of this information, such that it is captured in package logging, or can be used to drive workflow in the case of an error event. Properties Property Data Type Description OutputRowCountVariable String The name of the variable into which the amount of row read will be passed (Optional). OutputDurationVariable String The name of the variable into which the duration in seconds will be passed. (Optional). EventType RowCountPlusTransform.EventType The type of event to fire during post execute, included in which are the row count and duration values. RowCountPlusTransform.EventType Enumeration Name Value Description None 0 Do not fire any event. Information 1 Fire an Information event. Warning 2 Fire a Warning event. Error 3 Fire an Error event. Installation The component is provided as an MSI file which you can download and run to install it. This simply places the files on disk in the correct locations and also installs the assemblies in the Global Assembly Cache as per Microsoft’s recommendations. You may need to restart the SQL Server Integration Services service, as this caches information about what components are installed, as well as restarting any open instances of Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) / Visual Studio that you may be using to build your SSIS packages. For 2005/2008 Only - Finally you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox manually. Right-click the toolbox, and select Choose Items.... Select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab, and then check the Row Count Plus Transformation in the Choose Toolbox Items window. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component? We recommend you follow best practice and apply the current Microsoft SQL Server Service pack to your SQL Server servers and workstations, and this component requires a minimum of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1. • How do I install the old sensors-applet package?

  I want to install sensors-applet onto my Ubuntu 12.04 computer. The instructions on this (and other) webpages says to enter this command in a command terminal: sudo apt-get install sensors-applet This is a gnome applet and gnome isn't exactly obscure. Why can sensors-applet package not be found? Before you say "no", note that I was able to execute "gnome-panel" to add a bar/panel along the bottom of my desktop, add 8 cpu-frequency applets to the bar (one per CPU core), and add gnome-panel to my startup applications. So I've already done the basics, and believe all I need now is to be able to download and install the sensors-applet to have that temperature applet available on the panel too. See here.

• Is there a constant for "end of time"?

  For some systems, the time value 9999-12-31 is used as the "end of time" as the end of the time that the computer can calculate. But what if it changes? Wouldn't it be better to define this time as a builtin variable? In C and other programming languages there usually is a variable such as MAX_INT or similar to get the largest value an integer could have. Why is there not a similar function for MAX_TIME i.e. set the variable to the "end of time" which for many systems usually is 9999-12-31. To avoid the problem of hardcoding to a wrong year (9999) could these systems introduce a variable for the "end of time"?

• How do I mount this HDD?

  I have a Windows HDD attached to an external docking bay on my Ubuntu System, but the HDD brings up an error message: Mounting exited with exit code 14:windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sde2':Operation not permitted. The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown windows properly or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option. For example type in command line: mount -t ntfs-3g-o remove_hiberfile/dev/sde2/media/FE46D60C46D5C615 I am at a loss for exactly how to remove the hiberfile, or even mount it as read-only or read-write. I tried directly copy and pasting that exact command into my terminal, but it said: mount:only root can do that I do not know what to do at this point. I do need to get the information off of this drive, but I do not have a computer to put it in. Does anyone know what I should do from here?

• How do I resolve "No JSON object could be decoded" on mythbuntu live CD?

  I have been running a MythTV frontend on my laptop for some time against a MythTV backend installed in Linux Mint 12 on another computer, and everything works fine. Now, I'm trying out the Mythbuntu Live CD (12.04.1 32-bit) on the laptop, to turn it into a dedicated front end. It's connecting to the network just fine, and I can see my server. When I click on the frontend icon on the desktop, it asks me for the security code, which I've verified against mythtv-setup on the server. However, when I test that code, it shows the error message "No JSON object could be decoded". I've looked in the control center to see if there's something else I should be setting up. The message above implies to me that it can't find the server, but I can find no place in the control center to tell it where to find my myth backend, which I find a little odd. Does the live CD not work against a backend server on another machine?

• Kubuntu login problem

  I have a problem when trying to login to my Kubuntu 10.10. The login screen shows up, then I type my password, a blank screen is shown with my desktop background picture and then throws me back on the login screen. if I choose to login from console, I can do that, and by typing startx I can log in just fine but in the end I cannot shutdown the computer from the k menu nor will my settings remembered for the next time I log back. I have my home directory mounted from a different partition but I tried to create a new user account and I could log in without any kind of problem. The home directory is not encrypted, at least not to my knowledge. Some log files: Xorg.0.log dmesg.out kdm.log xsession.errors

  There is a lot of evidence that things like offices, multiple screens, administration rights of your own computer, and being allowed whatever software you want is great for productivity while developing. However, the studies I've seen tend toward companies that sell software. Therefore, keeping the programmers productive is paramount to the company's profitability. However, at companies that produce software simply to support their primary function, programming is merely a support role. Do the same rules apply at a company that only uses the software they produce to support their business, and a lot of a programmer's work is maintainence?

• Black screen with blinking cursor! [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? From my Windows XP SP3 machine, I downloaded the live image file for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I then burned a bootable CD. Then I went into the BIOS and set installation settings to (first) CD drive and (second) disabled. However, when I boot I only get a black screen with a blinking cursor. After some time I might get some error messages. Even if I leave it for hours I get nothing. FYI: I don't know how to go to the GRUB menu. Please make the answers easy since I am a young beginner.
