• problems with installation of ubuntu 12.04 (64 and 32 bits)

  I am a latinoamerican so.. sorry for my english I am trying to install ubuntu on my new pc but I have serious problems. When I put the installation cd and it runs, everything goes fine until that "window" when the user have to decide if want to try ubuntu or install it on the machine.. well that "window" apears in blank, and I see that my mouse and my keyboard turn really slowly and I can't do anything I have to shut it down by pressing power botton. The specification of my pc are this Gigabyte ex58 ud7 i7 950 wester digital caviar black 6gb memory corsair evga gtx580 Please i really neeed to install ubuntu or another linux distrubution, i am usign de sismic unix program on my laptop and well. it burns when i program a script! help! please :) what can i do..? what i have to download? i am not a pro in linux so please :( be pattient with me when it starts to load the achieve ubuntu environment to enter a menu with a graphical environment but I managed to get something sturdy and gave him to try ubuntu, started to load but freezes on the sign of ubuntu with red spots and only shows me the pointer not more ..... any other option? ps: had previously tried to install the alternate version of ubuntu not having success: S

• How to get hp printer to select correct trays on samba shared printer

  My first post here. Clean install of 12.04.1. Previously 10.04. Have been running a p2035n printer without problem. Now, no matter what paper tray I select it prints to the top "by-pass" feeder--not the lower main tray. And when I select to print to manual feed, it does not wait for me to put in paper (like it used to), but prints immediately. The printer is on a samba share and is physically plugged into a WinXP machine. Its uri is smb:///computername/p2035n. I have tried several of the offered drivers for this hp machine, and even tried generic-laser. Same result on all. Here are some other things I have tried (losing 2-3 hours of my time!): hp-check -t reports “error: User needs to be member of group 'lp' to enable print, scan & fax. ” and “warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.” needed to download HPLIP 3.12.11 followed http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html sh hplip-3.12.11-run says that before setup logout and then on login run hp-setup hp-setup could not find the printer ran hp-check -t again, found I was not in group lp ran hp-check --fix and it fixed that problem, asks for reboot rebooted after running update manager (new kernel) and hp-check -t shows no errors this time all the tray selections end up on the bypass tray hp-setup still cannot find the printer So is there a way to make this work? • Problem installing drivers for Brother DCP-1400

  I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ... • A Generic RIDC Test Program

  Many times I have found it useful to use a java program that communicates with WebCenter Content (WCC) using RIDC for testing. I might not have access to the web GUI or need to test a service running as a specific user. In the past I had created a number of "one off" programs that submitted specific services, e.g GET_SEARCH_RESULTS, DOCINFO, etc. Recently I decided to create a generic RIDC test program that could submit any service with the desired parameters based on a configuration file. The programs gets the following information from the configuration file: WCC connection information (host, port) User to use to run service Service to run Any parameters for the service The program will make a connection to the WCC server, send the service request, and print the results of the service call using the getResponseAsString() method. Here is a sample configuration file: ridc.host=localhostridc.port=4444ridc.user=sysadminridc.idcservice=GET_SEARCH_RESULTSidcservice.QueryText=dDocType <matches> `Document`idcservice.SortField=dDocNameidcservice.SortDesc=ASC There is a readme file included in the zip with instructions for how to configure and run the program. The program takes one command line argument, the configuration file name. The configuration file name is optional and defaults to config.properties. If you have any suggestions for improvements let me know. Right now it only submits a single service call each time you run it. One enhancement I have already thought about would be to allow you to specify multiple services to tun in the configuration file. You can do that with the current program by having multiple configuration files and running the program multiple times, each with a different configuration file. You can download the program here.

I have been spelunking the TFS Guidance recently and I discovered the Visual Studio 2010 Architectural Guidance. This is not an in-depth look at the capabilities of the architectural tools that shipped with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but is instead a set of samples that lead you by example through real world scenarios. There is practical guidance and checklists to help guide lead developers and architects through the common challenges in understanding both existing and new applications. The content concentrates on practical guidance for Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and is focused on modelling tools. There is integration into Visual Studio so all you need to do to access it is select “Architecture | Visual Studio ALM Rangers – Architecture Guidance”. • Announcing Oracle Database Mobile Server 11gR2

  I'm pleased to announce that Oracle Database Mobile Server 11gR2 has been released. It's available now for download by existing customers, or anyone who wants to try it out. New features include: Support for J2ME platforms, specifically CDC platforms including OJEC(this is in addition to our existing support for Java SE and SE Embedded) Per-application integration with Berkeley DB on Android Server-side support for Apache TomEE platform Adding support for Oracle Java Micro Edition Embedded Client (OJEC for short) is an important milestone for us; it enables Database Mobile Server to work with any of the incredibly wide array of devices that run J2ME. In particular, it enables management of  networks of embedded devices, AKA machine to machine (M2M) networks. As these types of networks become more common in areas like healthcare, automotive, and manufacturing, we're seeing demand for Database Mobile Server from new and different areas. This is in addition to our existing array of mobile device use cases. The Android integration feature with Berkeley DB represents the completion of phase I of our Android support plan, we now offer a full set of sync, device and app management features for that platform. Going forward, we plan to continue the dual-focus approach, supporting mobile platforms such as Android, and iOS (hint) on the one hand, and networks of embedded M2M devices on the other. In either case, Database Mobile Server continues to be the best way to connect data-driven applications to an Oracle backend.

• Code &amp; Slides &ndash; SDE &ndash; What&rsquo;s new in Silverlight 4

  Last Tuesday the Software Developers Network – SDN organized another SDE. I’ve had the opportunity to present a session about Silverlight 4. I talked about lots of new features in Silverlight 4 and Expression Blend 4, focused on the Out-Of-Browser features.     The slides of my presentation can be downloaded here.   In my presentation I demonstrated a couple of features from my new pet project “SilverAmp”. This project is based on the legendary WinAmp, but made entirely in Silverlight. I use it to try out many new Silverlight 4 features. It’s not finished yet, but useful already. It runs outside the browser with elevated trust. It reads your local MyMusic folder and uses the TagLib library to read the ID3 tags of the mp3s it finds. SilverAmp is using MEF for extensibility. It uses a custom Window Chrome, designed in Expression Design. And it shows a notification window when a new song starts to play.   In the future it is going to get song information from Last.FM, will be able to show YouTube videos inside itself and it will tweet about what you are playing. • Introducing the New Boot Framework in CE 7

  CE 7 introduces a new boot loader framework, BLDR (platform\common\src\common\bldr\). Some people like its powerful and flexbility, others may feel its too complicate as a boot loader framework. Despite to the favor, it is already there; so let's take a look at its features. Unlike the previous BL framwork (CE7 still provides it in platform\common\src\common\boot\) is a monolithic library, the new framework has more architecture structure. It not only defines main body but also provides rich components, such as filesystem (BinFS/FAT), download transportations, display, logging and block devices: bios INT13, FAL, IDE, Flash ( and etc. Note that in the block device category, the FAL is for legacy FMD/FAL, Flash is for latest MSFlash. Some of you may have encountered MSFlash MDD/PDD compatible partition is hard to created in bootloader and now it provides a clean solution! (Since this is a big topic, I will introduce it in future post) Today, I am going to show you some basic helper components - Image Loading functions. When OS image stored in the block device, it can be a file format, says your NK.BIN in the FAT volume or a RAW format, says the image is programmed to a BINFS partition. For the first one you can use BootFileSystemReadBinFile (platform\common\src\common\bldr\fileSystem\utils\fileSystemReadBinFile.c) and use BootBlockLoadBinFsImage (platform\common\src\common\bldr\block\utils\loadBinFs.c) to load from a partition. • Raspberry Pi and Java SE: A Platform for the Masses

  One of the more exciting developments in the embedded systems world has been the announcement and availability of the Raspberry Pi, a very capable computer that is no bigger than a credit card.  At $35 US, initial demand for the device was so significant, that very long back orders quickly ensued. After months of patiently waiting, mine finally arrived.  Those initial growing pains appear to have been fixed, so availability now should be much more reasonable. At a very high level, here are some of the important specs: Broadcom BCM2835 System on a chip (SoC) ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700MHz Videocore 4 GPU capable of BluRay quality playback 256Mb RAM 2 USB ports and Ethernet Boots from SD card Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) available So what's taking place taking place with respect to the Java platform and Raspberry Pi? A Java SE Embedded binary suitable for the Raspberry Pi is available for download (Arm v6/7) here.  Note, this is based on the armel architecture, a variety of Arm designed to support floating point through a compatibility library that operates on more platforms, but can hamper performance.  In order to use this Java SE binary, select the available Debian distribution for your Raspberry Pi. The more recent Raspbian distribution is based on the armhf (hard float) architecture, which provides for more efficient hardware-based floating point operations.  However armhf is not binary compatible with armel.  As of the writing of this blog, Java SE Embedded binaries are not yet publicly available for the armhf-based Raspbian distro, but as mentioned in Henrik Stahl's blog, an armhf release is in the works. As demonstrated at the just-completed JavaOne 2012 San Francisco event, the graphics processing unit inside the Raspberry Pi is very capable indeed, and makes for an excellent candidate for JavaFX.  As such, plans also call for a Pi-optimized version of JavaFX in a future release too. A thriving community around the Raspberry Pi has developed at light speed, and as evidenced by the packed attendance at Pi-specific sessions at Java One 2012, the interest in Java for this platform is following suit. • Tip: Recording Non-Maximized Applications in UPK

  Have you ever wanted to record an application that would not maximize, or an application that would look strange maximized? Or perhaps your Windows Desktop has become cluttered with icons and you don't want to capture the clutter in your recordings. Here's a tip that will help: create a background for your recording. Create a blank HTML file with a black background in your favorite HTML editor. Or download this sample file: UPK_Recording_Background.html (right click to save). If you would prefer a different color background in the sample file, open it in Notepad and change “#000” to a different HTML color. Open UPK_Recording_Background.html in its own web browser window. Press F11 to make the web browser window full screen. This should give you a completely black screen. (This works great in modern versions of the most popular browsers. I successfully used Firefox 15, Chrome 22, and IE 9. Open or switch to the desired application so that it sits on top of the full screen browser window. If the application you are recording is also in a browser, it is important that it be in a separate browser window from the UPK_Recording_Background.html. Record your topic normally. The above steps create a recording background using an HTML file and a web browser. This is just one method, for instance you could do the same thing with an image editor and an image viewer with a full screen view. Now you can record a non-maximized application without a distracting background. I hope you find this to be a helpful tip. Let us know what you think in the comments.

• proxychained browser unable to open files

  Ubuntu 10.10, Midori 0.3.2 browser (same problem with Epiphany 2.30.2, Chrome 11.0.686.1 dev; haven't tried with Firefox as yet) Proxychains-3.1 installed, working fine. Here is the deal: when NOT proxychained, Midori or Epiphany can download and open a file (e.g. PDFs from a Google search) in Evince without problem. But when proxychained, neither browser can open PDF files. The message is, "file xxx downloaded". Then it tries to open the file, an indication appears in the status bar, the turning wheel appears, and then nothing. Evince doesn't open. Whats going on here? In both cases (with and without proxychains) files are downloaded to the /tmp folder. They have the same file permissions and ownership. Whats different when proxychained? Why can't the files be opened and why are there no error messages or notifications. Why the silent failure? I don't want to use FF or Chrome. Chrome does not follow my GTK2 customizations and FF is just too resource heavy. Please help.

Clarke has said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. As a kid in the midst of an increasing technological revolution, electronics were at the heart of that. Learning electronics was made easy through the Science Fair Electronic Project Kits found at Radioshack. Through the project guides, kids could construct various ‘experiments’ by attaching wires to terminal springs that make circuits. The terminal springs would wire in components such as LED segment lights, photo sensors, resistors, diodes, etc. While it was fun getting the projects to work, the manuals lacked in depth explanation as to what was happening in the circuit to produce the project’s result. Why it was awesome: First, it was a simple buy for parents. Everything you needed to get your child interested in electronics was right in the kit. You didn’t need to breadboard or solder. I remember a distinct feeling of accomplishment making a high-water alarm or a light-sensor game with the realization that the bundles of wires springing up from the kit were actually doing something! Modern equivalent: You can still pick up variations of the 100-in-1 kits, but their popular replacement seem to be Snap Circuits by Elenco. All of the components are mounted on a plastic base with a contact on either end which interconnect with each other and the plastic base that projects can be mounted to. Each component also has the electrical diagram symbol for that component drawn on it so it can help you read schematics. For that reason alone, I like these better.   In Web Applications, we often come across requirement of sending and receiving emails through our application. So same can be for the applications hosted on Azure. So Do you want to send email from an application hosted on Azure? CloudMail is one of the possible answers. CloudMail is designed to provide a small, effective and reliable solution for sending email from the Azure platform directly addressing several problems that application developers face. Microsoft does not provide an SMTP Gateway (yet) so the application is forced to connect directly to one hosted somewhere else, on another network. So to implement such functionality one of the possible option is using Free email providers. This might be fine for testing, but do you really want to rely on a free service in production? There can be other issues with this approach like if your chosen SMTP gateway is down or there are connection problems? Again there can be some specific requirement that, you want to send email via a company’s mail server, from inside their firewall. CloudMail solves these problems by providing a small client library that you can use in your solution to send emails from you application and a Windows Service that you run inside your companies network that acts as a relay.
