Why can't I access a web app running on my Mac via my iPhone?

I'm developing an iPhone app that has a network component. I'm developing the app in Java (Google App Engine actually), running on port 8080. And it works, when I test my app in the iPhone simulator. But now I am trying to test on the device, and I can't hit my Jetty instance. I can certainly access my Mac via the iPhone because I'm able to hit http://10.0.1.7/~brianpapa/ and view my Home Folder when Web Sharing is turned on. But when I try to hit http://10.0.1.7:8080/, it says it can't connect to the server. Interestingly, if I try to hit http://10.0.1.7:8080/ from my mac, it doesn't work either - I have to use localhost as the hostname instead, then it's fine. Has anybody ever encountered this before, and know how to fix it?

Whats the best solution for a database used in conjunction with Maps in Android?

Could someone please point me in the right direction. My project involves a database where users enter their address and other info from my website. This database is then referenced in my android application to show the locations of these addresses in my database. I have yet to start and just came up with this idea. My question is, what would be the best method to create a database easily modified through my website (mySQL, php, etc), and also easily referenced easily through Android and the Google Maps API? I need some ideas on the languages I will need to use to create this database and website so I can go buy the necessary books to start reading up. Thanks so much

Scale div in an upwards direction, instead of down?

I have a custom info window over a google map, sometimes these info windows contain an image. When they do, the info window scales down over the marker it is positioned over as soon as the image has finished loading. So the images take longer to load and the div's position has already been calculated by the time the image is finished loading. I do believe there is a way of checking if an image has finished loaded, but that seems a long route - is there not a simple way with JS or CSS to get the div to scale upwards instead of down. Anyone have any clues?

Best Website Statistics tool for Drupal

What is the best free Website statistics setup I can have for Drupal 6 on Apache? Particularities: 1. Multisite install. Might want to look over several sites. Should be able to restrict view for clients to their own site. Some hits are bypassing Drupal. Some urls are not public. Some sites have little traffic, it would be nice to be able to exclude "own" traffic. Logged in users are not so important (It seems Google Analytics is popular)

How to Communicate between minifb and a GAE-Hosted Silverlight Client

I have a minifb app (technically gminifb) running on Google App Engine with a bunch of handlers for processing all kinds of requests from a Silverlight client. What's the recommended approach for adding the FB GET variables, such as fb_sig, to the HTTP requests? I believe I can technically pass the session key and uid directly and get things to work but it seems there's probably a much better way to do this. I was reading about FBJS AJAX and I'm trying to figure out how I can use it to proxy the HTTP requests from the Silverlight client through it. Is this a good way to do it? And if so, how would I go about doing so? Any other recommendations would be appreciated too. Thanks,

Is it possible to pickle python "units" units?

I'm using the Python "units" package (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/units/) and I've run into some trouble when trying to pickle them. I've tried to boil it down to the simplest possible to case to try and figure out what's going on. Here's my simple test: from units import unit, named_unit from units.predefined import define_units from units.compatibility import compatible from units.registry import REGISTRY a = unit('m') a_p = pickle.dumps(a) a_up = pickle.loads(a_p) logging.info(repr(unit('m'))) logging.info(repr(a)) logging.info(repr(a_up)) logging.info(a.is_si()) logging.info(a_up.is_si()) logging.info( compatible(a,a_up) ) logging.info(a(10) + a_up(10)) The output I'm seeing when I run this is: LeafUnit('m', True) LeafUnit('m', True) LeafUnit('m', True) True True False IncompatibleUnitsError I'd understand if pickling units broke them, if it weren't for the fact that repr() is returning identical results for them. What am I missing? This is using v0.04 of the units package, and Google App Engine 1.4 SDK 1

JQuery cookie access has stopped working for GAE app

I have a google app engine app that has been running for some time, and some javascript code that checks for a login cookie has suddenly stopped working. As far as I can tell, NO code has changed. The relevant code uses the jquery cookies plugin (jquery.cookies.2.2.0.min.js)... // control the default screen depending // if someone is logged in if( $.cookies.get('dev_appserver_login') != null || $.cookies.get('ACSID') != null ) { alert("valid cookie!") $("#inventory-container").show(); } else { alert("INvalid cookie!") $("#welcome-container").show(); } The reason for the two checks is that in the GAE SDK, the cookies are named differently. The production system uses 'ACSID'. This if statement works in the SDK and now fails 100% of the time in production. I have verified that the cookie is, in fact, present when I inspect the page. Thoughts?

Determine the lat lngs of markers within a polygon

I have a google maps app which plots markers as it loads. One of the new requirment is to to add a Polygon overlay encompassing a selection of markers by the user. I was able to achieve that using the Geometry Controls of the GMaps Utility Library Now, the next step is to form a group of the selected markers for which I would need to determine if the lat lngs of the markers falls within the lat lngs of the polygon? Is there a way to determine the lat lngs of a polygon and compute if the marker's lat lng is within its boundaries?

Why browser doesnt recognize jquery when <script src="...jquery.js> is on a html page served by Goo

jquery.js source code is not being recognised by browser using my page.html served by Google App Engine as a http:some_request to the SDK, BUT when I load the exact same page.html into the browser directly from my local hard drive as jquery.js all works OK, it is recognized, so I know my path is OK.... I don't understand? In the header of my page.html I have the following: <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I also tried without success in the header this: <script src="/static/jquery.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I am working along with the examples in the [Jquery tutorial][1]. I am sure there is something simple I dont understand about how .html pages served to the browser from app engine interact differently with the browser than what I normally would expect....but I frustratingly just cant get it.....everything else I have with my app engine app is working fine......would love some help so i can move forward....

I tied the iPad the other day, and was amazed about the precision of the geolocalization by ip. Actually there is this action against hunger in the world that shows you very precisely where the persons are located that have took part to this petition: http://www.1billionhungry.org/meodai/impact/ I would like to integrate that in one of my projects. I took a look at the source but i could not figure out how they did it. Can someone help me out? is there a web service for that? Is the google map api doing this or are they using an other service? PS: Its not just the country/region of your IP/ISP IP that the service gives back, its a pretty precise positioning.

302 vs 301 redirect in this specific case

We have a website that displays information in a location based manner, i.e. it detects the IP of the visiting user and redirects him/her to an appropriate landing page; for e.g. a user coming from 'Egypt' will be redirected to http://www.mysite.com/egypt/cairo and a user visting from dubai will be redirected to http://www.mysite.com/uae/dubai, so on and so forth and we cater to multiple locations in the middle-east. Now, we have been advised by our SEO consultant that we should put a 301 (permanent redirect) on http://www.mysite.com to point to http://www.mysite.com/ksa/riyadh I would like to know the negative implications that this would have on Google indexing or otherwise, as I fundamentally disagree with this suggestion and believe that in a siutation like this a 302 redirect would be more appropriate.

Should I start to use CSS 3 & HTML 5?

I fear this may sound subjective, sorry. I am wondering how "safe" it is to use CSS3 & HTML5 in a commercial app. I really want the power that they give, but am obviously wary that they are not completely standardized. If it helps any I can probably enforce the use of Chrome as the browser; I can likely offer FireFox as an alternative. I personally do not want to let the user choose their own browser and can probably enforce my choice in a corporate environment which is already heavily biased towards Google. I suppose that if I can enforce a Chrome only policy & carefully test before release then my only worry is that some "behaviour" may change in future. Would you risk it, or would play safe (or go with an alternative, such as a Java app, forgetting the browser)?

Explain this O(n log n) algorithm for the Cat/Egg Throwing Problem

Quite cruel, actually), has an accepted answer with O(n^3) complexity. The problem is equivalent to this Google Code Jam, which should be solvable for N=2000000000. It seems that the O(n^3) solution is not good enough to solve it. From looking in the solutions page, jdmetz's solution (#2) seems to be O(n log n). I don't quite understand the algorithm. Hello everyone I am PHP Developer and developing website .in that i used Google map with the facility of select state and city. for select state and city i put two drop down.so now my problem is when i select state then i can not get value of city and both time whenever use select state and city i refresh the page and so after refreshing the page the value i got is incorrect and does not match the state with city... i clarify again Step 1:- select state (here page will refresh and then i will get value) Step 2:- select city (here also will refresh and then i will get value)) problem :- on the base getting state id and city id i fire the query but result will unknown b'cz city id that does not in selected state actually that city is there

Counts of events grouped by date in python?

This is no doubt another noobish question, but I'll ask it anyways: I have a data set of events with exact datetime in UTC. I'd like to create a line chart showing total number of events by day (date) in the specified date range. Right now I can retrieve the total data set for the needed date range, but then I need to go through it and count up for each date. The app is running on google app engine and is using python. What is the best way to create a new data set showing date and corresponding counts (including if there were no events on that date) that I can then use to pass this info to a django template? Data set for this example looks like this: class Event(db.Model): event_name = db.StringProperty() doe = db.DateTimeProperty() dlu = db.DateTimeProperty() user = db.UserProperty() Ideally, I want something with date and count for that date. Cloud Apps and Single Sign-On (AD integration)

I've been investigating some cloud vendors and the ability to implement single sign-on with them, especially when it comes to AD (Active Directory) integration. So far I've learned that with Azure this is possible through ADFS and the AppFabric Access Control offer. In AWS, since it is possible to create a VPN and see EC2 instances as a natural extension of a private datacenter, I believe implementing SSO would be rather simple (not sure if I'm right on this one... Please correct me if I'm wrong). With App Engine though, even though there is some documentation on AD synchronization (not full integration) for Google Apps, I'm struggling to find out whether AD integration would be possible... Is there any strategy for that? Any bit of information on cloud apps and AD integration will be appreciated!

Which is quicker? Memcache or file query? (using maxmind geoip.dat file)

Hi, I'm using Python on Appengine and am looking up the geolocation of an IP address like this: import pygeoip gi = pygeoip.GeoIP('GeoIP.dat') Location = gi.country_code_by_addr(self.request.remote_addr) (pygeoip can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/pygeoip/) I want to geolocate each page of my app for a user so currently I lookup the IP address once then store it in memcache. My question - which is quicker? Looking up the IP address each time from the .dat file or fetching it from memcache? Are there any other pros/cons I need to be aware of? For general queries like this, is there a good guide to teach me how to optimise my code and run speed tests myself? I'm new to python and coding in general so apologies if this is a basic concept. Turbogears 2 vs Django - any advice on choosing replacement for Turbogears 1?

I have been using Turbogears 1 for prototyping small sites for the last couple of years and it is getting a little long in the tooth. Any suggestions on making the call between upgrading to Turbogears 2 or switching to something like Django? I'm torn between the familiarity of the TG community who are pretty responsive and do pretty good documentation vs the far larger community using Django. Trouble! I'm looking for a way to find the countries within a given range of LAT/LONG coordinates. E.g.: When viewing a place in Africa in Google Maps, I get out which countries that are in my current view. This is a bit ambitious, and I think the main problem will be dealing with accuracy of the needed polygons. The accuracy of these don't need to be all that great, the borders can probably be tens of miles off, or even more. This will be needed for the entire world.

For educational purpose, I am writing a server instance in GCE(google compute engine) to serve a few web apps mostly (to be) written in Dart and Polymer. My workflow is, when my students log-in the server above, they will automatically fork those web apps into their own registries in their own server instances for further development. My issues are, How to serve web applications(they are git registries as well) in GCE like Github Pages? Is it possible to manipulate Github Pages to serve web apps mostly using Dart and Polymer packages? Thanks in advance.
