• How can one restrict network activity to only the VPN on a Mac and prevent unsecured internet activity?

  I'm using Mac OS and connect to a VPN to hide my location and IP (I have the 'send all traffic over VPN connection' box checked in teh Network system pref), I wish to remain anonymous and do not wish to reveal my actual IP, hence the VPN. I have a prefpan called pearportVPN that automatically connects me to my VPN when I get online. The problem is, when I connect to the internet using Airport (or other means) I have a few seconds of unsecured internet connection before my Mac logs onto my VPN. Therefore its only a matter of time before I inadvertently expose my real IP address in the few seconds it takes between when I connect to the internet and when I log onto my VPN. Is there any way I can block any traffic to and from my Mac that does not go through my VPN, so that nothing can connect unless I'm logged onto my VPN? I suspect I would need to find a third party app that would block all traffic except through the Server Address, perhaps Intego Virus Barrier X6 or little snitch, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which is right or how to configure them. • Is it possible to create a simple frontend indexer for openbittorent torrents?

  I run a website which distributes a few files every now and again, live music performances by a rock band. I create a torrent file, set the trackers as openbittorrent, publicbt and other similar open trackers. I upload the torrent file to my forum, my users download it and the files are shared. No problems there. What I would like to do is index those torrents properly on my website though so I can follow seeders/leechers and other stats online. I know the open torrent trackers don't have an index but I am aware of many, many indexing sites that do that exact thing. I don't know how though. So what I'm asking is what do I need to do to do that myself? I simply want to create a page that lists the torrents I and other users on my site create, the seeders/leechers ratio and a link to the torrent file etc. What data do I need to be able to do that? I'm proficient in general web design but I don't know what I would need data wise to pull the required info on the torrents? Thanks

• Dedicated Mouse and Keyboard on Virtual Box VM

  To all super users, Currently I am trying to run virtual box on my second monitor, with a dedicated mouse and keyboard. However, doing so has not proven easy. There has been times where the mouse works, but not the keyboard, vice versa, or nothing works at all. The biggest problem I am running into is this: When enabling the USB mouse and keyboard from the VM, I get an error: 'USB Device is busy with a previous request.' The only thing that is using second mouse and keyboard, however, is Windows. The other error I have received stated that the VM was unable to create a proxy for the device. Additionally, the VM occasionally will disable the secondary keyboard entirely, requiring me to unplug and replug it into my PC to re-enable it again. Keyboard auto-capture is disabled, and while a solution I was reading online stated to turn off mouse integration, that option is grayed out on my machine. Any help would be appreciated. • apache chokes after 300 connections

  We have an apache webserver in front of Tomcat hosted on EC2, instance type is extra large with 34GB memory. Our application deals with lot of external webservices and we have a very lousy external webservice which takes almost 300 seconds to respond to requests during peak hours. During peak hours the server chokes at just about 300 httpd processes. ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l =300 I have googled and found numerous suggestions but nothing seems to work.. following are some configuration i have done which are directly taken from online resources. • InstallShield or Windows installer corrupted

  Just recently I've been unable to install any software on my Windows 7 machine. Anything that uses InstallShield or the Windows installer will just hang or give a weird error. I noticed there will be many duplicate isbew64.exe processes (like 25) that launch and then just sit there or else a lot of msiexec.exe *32 processes, depending on what I'm trying to install. One piece of software specifically is the Logitech Harmony software. It gives me an *is_string_not_defined* error, saying c:\program files (x86)\:\ the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The other thing I was trying to install was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and that just hangs as well, and then just leaves all the Windows installer processes running in the background after I quit the install process. Very odd. I've checked well and googled these issues, it doesn't appear to be any sort of malware issue. I feel like it's related to some kind of corrupted installer application. I've rebooted, deleted the InstallShield folder in program files/common files as some places online suggested but to no avail. I have no idea what to do, any ideas?

• Centralized backup method recommendation for SMEs with various OSes

  Hi I was wondering what in your opinion is the "best" method for having "everything" backed-up in the following situation. We are a SMEs with 10 computers in total. Three of those computers are MACs The rest are windows (1 vista, 4 win7 and 2 XPs) I'm very open to what the method should be but you should also consider the follwing: Very limited resources Quite "small" bandwidth (4 MBs for all (download) 0.4 MBs (upload, yep, thats it)- though this might get, a little bit better) One of the main thing to back up would be the mails, considerations: All windows computers use outlook, mainly 2003 There is one mac that uses outlook too (for mac of course - not 2011 yet) We also have to backup the files: Not a huge amount Very few very big files Very organizes (by machine) What I would like is to hear your opinions as to which would be the best method (or combination of methods - preferably one of course) considering. We are not sure what do we need and I'm open to suggestions, though an online (cloud based applications) would be great, remember the the bandwidth is unbearable. Last think to consider, it that we would like to do weekly updates (unless the method is very easy of course). Thanks in advance!! I tried to be as specific as possible, but if anything is needed I'll gladly update, please ask for any clarification needed! Please avoid any answers like upgrade all to windows 7 and throw away your macs :) our's may not be an ideal situation, but it is what it is, and right now, it would be impossible for us to change it for a lot of circumstances.

• Laptop seemingly randomly "freezes" to the point of no longer executing applications

  After upgrading to Windows 8 pro on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C-S04US (may be relevant, I'm not sure), my computer began to stop allowing the execution of any service or application, as well as discontinuing the update of the clock until a hard shutdown was performed. This seems to occur randomly after periods of inactivity and I've no idea the cause. These are measures I have already taken in order to attempt to stop this: -Obviously Googling potential answers to this problem -Updating all drivers -Researching all events that have occurred around the time of the failure to respond (with no results) -I tried applying "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no" which was a hotfix for what seemed to be the same error but was not. Here is some more, potentially related, information about the error: -No BSOD (actually, I haven't at all experienced a BSOD with Windows 8) -Computer seems to have a problem shutting down/restarting most of the time (Hangs at the point where it should completely turn off) -New sound instances are not able to play, but previously loaded containers function properly -As mentioned before, the clock freezes at the time of the error -USB devices function properly -Servers that I was running fail to respond on my end, but stay online. • 3dmark score abnormal

  I just bought a new laptop. It is core i7 3610QM.(Ivy bridge, 4 core plus hyperthreading), 8G ram, nvidia GT 610M 2GB. The OS is Win7 64bit. I ran 3dmark 11, but the score is frustrating. For 1280*720, the score is P730. It is too low right? I searched online, the score should at least above 1000. Am I right? I never use this software before. I know nvidia has optimus, so I made the laptop in high performance state and white-listed the 3dmark program. But there is no help. I am guessing 3dmark is using i7's graphic module. It cannot transform to nvidia. In the running detail of 3dmark, the graphic card cannot be identified(The row remain blank). Can anybody tell me is this the normal case? If not, can I use some other software to test if my nvidia card is working fine? If this nvidia card cannot work, I will return the new laptop asap. Thanks.

• How do I disable tablet gestures in windows 8?

  I'm using a Wacom Intuos4 and I have recently upgraded to Windows 8. I don't have a problem when using Photoshop however I occasionally draw on flash based online boards. The problem is, when I drag the pen in a direction repetitively (which is basically all I do when drawing) it's detected as a gesture, sometimes causing Chrome to go to the previous page (left drag) and making me lose the entire thing. Is there a way to disable these "gestures"? I believe this is not something caused by Windows 8 (or Charms) because I run Windows in English although it's not the initial language that Windows was installed in. I changed to English long after the installation. When Windows takes a move as a gesture, a small text pops up next to the cursor informing me about what I have just done and those pop ups are not even in English. I'm sorry for failing to be any more specific here but these gestures could be a feature of either Windows (unlikely), the tablet, Chrome or the computer itself. It's an Acer Aspire and it has one of those little stickers on it that specifies some of the features and one of them reads "Multi-Gesture" (referring to the touchpad, I guess). Could it be that this Multi-Gesture feature somehow decided to expand and apply for my tablet as well? If so, how do I disable it?

• How to make Windows command prompt treat single quote as though it is a double quote?

  My scenario is simple - I am copying script samples from the Mercurial online book (at http://hGBook.red-bean.com) and pasting them in a Windows command prompt. The problem is that the samples in the book use single quoted strings. When a single quoted string is passed on the Windows command prompt, the latter does not recognize that everything between the single quotes belongs to one string. For example, the following command: hg commit -m 'Initial commit' cannot be pasted as is in a command prompt, because the latter treats 'Initial commit' as two strings - 'Initial and commit'. I have to edit the command after paste and it is annoying. Is it possible to instruct the Windows command prompt to treat single quotes similarly to the double one? EDIT Following the reply by JdeBP I have done a little research. • OpenVZ container is running but does not show in vzlist nor can I find the private/conf files for the container

  I was creating a new OpenVZ container on one of our VPS Nodes while the power went out for that machine. After bringing the machine back online I could no longer access the container CTID=101. I could not destroy it using "vzctl destroy 101", I can not enter or control it, and "vzlist -a" does NOT display any containers at all (this was a fresh node and the first container was being created). I decided to create a new container at this point assuming that the old container just was not saved for some reason. However when I go to add the ip/host to the new container I get a warning that the IP is already in use. After doing a ping to the IP I realized there was a machine on that IP. I SSH into the machine and discover it is the OLD container that some how is orphaned. I can not find it on the filesystem, I can not find it using VZ commands, and It is set to start on Node boot so it is impossible to shutdown (even ssh in and typing the "shutdown now" command just reboots the container not shut it down). Is this a flaw in OpenVZ or am I missing something? I have all the outputs and logs if needed. Thank you all so much in advance.

• Outlook 2010 IMAP account - send on behalf

  So I was looking for a possibility to manage the mail distribution of online shops, newsfeeds, etc. and have a nice solution via distribution groups aka. alias addresses. In example, I register an account on eBay using "[email protected]" (where org.com is my company obviously). That address is an alias and can be managed on my on-premise mail server setting destination to somebody's mailbox independent from logging on to eBay - in case somebody else shall do the eBay-stuff, I can quick change the destination of that alias :-) So far, so good - and now to the problem: Using Microsoft Outlook 2010 and an IMAP account on our mail server, I cannot figure out how to remove that "on behalf of"-string visible in the from-field when sending a message under that [email protected] address. That's quite a pity, because especially eBay doesn't accept/forward mails not coming from the registered address.. Using other mail clients (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird), the problem does not occur so I guess it's Outlook specific. I cannot "grant" permission to "send as", because that address is not a mailbox, but rather an alias only. Furthermore, the mail accounts are not Exchange, but IMAP! Does anybody have any other ideas to "remove" that annoying string? Consideration: We have to use Microsoft Outlook for some reason! :-)

• Oracle 11g Data Guard over a WAN

  Hi - We are in process of looking at using Oracle's Data Guard to replicate our 11g instance from a colo facility in Washington DC to Chicago. To give some basics we have approximately 25TB of storage and a healthy transaction rate in the 1-2K/sec range. Also, because we are processing data in real-time we have a 24x7x365 requirement for processing data. We don't have any respites as far as volume except for system upgrades (once every few months) where we take the system offline but then course experience a spike in transactions when we bring the system back on-line. Ideally we would want the second instance in the DG configuration semi-online in a read-only fashion for reports/etc. We evaluated DG in 10g and were not overly impressed and research seemed to show that earlier versions had issues with replication over a WAN but I have heard good things about modifications the product has gone through w/ 11g. Can anyone confirm an instance of this size and transaction rate being replicated over a WAN and if so what is the general latency? An information or experiences with a DG implementation that is of this size and scope would really be helpful (or larger - I also realize we are still relatively small compared to many others out there). • How do I back up Hyper-V VMs with Windows Server backup on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  I've searched this site and google, and I CAN find information about how to back up Hyper-V virtual machines by using Windows Server Backup from the Hyper-V host in Windows Server 2008. You have to set up a registry key to enable the Hyper-V VSS writer, and then you can take online backups of your VMs. However, all the information I have found is about a year old, and none of it has been updated for Windows Server 2008 R2. I tried to run the "FixIt" .msi found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958662 ... but it said that it was not applicable to my operating system. So I am thinking either Windows Server 2008 R2 already has its VSS service for Hyper-V enabled, or it still needs to be enabled but the FixIt package doesn't feel comfortable operating on an OS that wasn't RTM at the time. I went ahead and scheduled a windows server backup for 9pm tomorrow. It said it would take 86 GB, which means it MUST be counting those VMs. But will this backup fail? Can anyone confirm whether you have to apply the same registry changes for R2?

• Updating files with a Perforce trigger before submit [migrated]

  I understand that this question has, in essence, already been asked, but that question did not have an unequivocal answer, so please bear with me. Background: In my company, we use Perforce submission numbers as part of our versioning. Regardless of whether this is a correct method or not, that is how things are. Currently, many developers do separate submissions for code and documentation: first the code and then the documentation to update the client-facing docs with what the new version numbers should be. I would like to streamline this process. My thoughts are as follows: create a Perforce trigger (which runs on the server side) which scans the submitted documentation files (such as .txt) for a unique term (such as #####PERFORCE##CHANGELIST##NUMBER###ROFL###LOL###WHATEVER#####) and then replaces it with the value of what the change list would be when submitted. I already know how to determine this value. What I cannot figure out, is how or where to update the files. I have already determined that using the change-content trigger (whether possible or not), which "fire[s] after changelist creation and file transfer, but prior to committing the submit to the database", is the way to go. At this point the files need to exist somewhere on the server. How do I determine the (temporary?) location of these files from within, say, a Python script so that I can update or sed to replace the placeholder value with the intended value? The online documentation for Perforce which I have found so far have not been very explicit on whether this is possible or how the mechanics of a submission at this stage would work.

• Error getting PAM / Linux integrated with Active Directory

  I'm trying to add a Linux server to a network which is controlled by AD. The aim is that users of the server will be able to authenticate against the AD domain. I have Kerberos working, but NSS / PAM are more problematic. I'm trying to debug with a simple command such as the following, please see the error. I don't know why it says "Invalid credentials", and the rest of the error is so cryptic, I have no idea. Is my approach somehow flawed? Is my DN obviously wrong? How can I confirm the correct DN? There was a tool online but I can't find it. NB I have no access to the AD Server for administration or configuration.

• Strange boot problems on 6 month old setup

  I've already exhausted my knowledge on this one, so forgive me if this post is a bit long. I built a computer 6 months ago for my wife and it worked fine until last week. Then it randomly shut down and would lock up while trying to boot on the boot screen. I cleared cmos and it allowed me to do startup recovery, but it "failed to fix the issue" so I reinstalled windows on the HD (moving the old install to windows_old). It worked, so I started installing drivers again, but then when I restarted to finalize installations it locked up again. This time, I took the hard drive and hooked it up to my computer, backed up all her files, and then formatted the hard drive before reinstalling it. (again had to clear cmos to let me boot from disk) It installed windows, I installed drivers, and it worked for a few hours but then died during startup again. So, then I got a new HD, cleared cmos, and installed clean again, with the same result as the time before, it worked for a few hours, installed windows updates, then crashed on the 3rd or 4th time turning it on. I decided next to try reinstalling and then going online to see if there were any updates for the BIOS or drivers on the Motherboard, but now I can't get it to even bring up the boot menu, so now I'm just left wondering was it the motherboard, or is it the CPU, or the RAM? The problem was strangely intermittent so I thought it had to be a software issue, since a hardware issue would ALWAYS fail to boot, right? But now it seems to be a hardware issue, because it's not bringing up anything. Any suggestions? System: Windows 7 64-bit 970A-DS3 Gigabyte Motherboard AMD Phenom II X4 955 Deneb 3.2GHz Quad core Proc GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB Video Card 500W PSU 2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600 RAM

• Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• Open ports broken from internal network

  Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP.

• Router as primary DNS server, Server as alternate? (or vice versa)

  We have a very small business network, with a typical cable modem hooked into a DD-WRT router. We also run a basic CentOS server that does a variety of things, including acting as the primary DNS server for the office. The reason we need an internal DNS server is because we do a lot of internal web development and use the DNS server to add/remove various local network URLs for internal website testing (like www.testsite.com.local). It's very important for us to be able to add/remove URL aliases easily to the DNS. The problem with this setup is that if we ever need to restart the CentOS server or take it offline for upgrades or whatever, then internet access for all computers on the network is lost. That's because each computer relies on that DNS server to access the Internet I guess? The router is online all the time and very very rarely has to be restarted. It would be nice if we could setup my router to be the primary DNS server but still be running DNS on my server. So we could still add my local testing website URLs to the DNS server in CentOS, but be able to also take down the CentOS server without loosing Internet access on the network. How would this be setup? Would I simply need to add both router + server IP addresses to each computer's IP settings? Is the router primary DNS and server secondary DNS server? Or vice versa? Or can one of the two serve as a fallback for the other? What (if anything) needs to be configured on both the router and server in order for them to recognize that the other DNS server exists on the network? Does anyone have any newb-friendly resources for setting up something like this?

  I'm going insane. Can someone please help me to COMPLETELY DISABLE the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page on Firefox. Facts: I am running Firefox 23.0 on an Ubuntu machine (downloaded and installed ubuntu today) It is a work computer and I have to use my employer's proxy While visiting Webpages/webapps like Gmail or Google brings up the 'This Connection is Untrusted' page and I have to go through the whole tedious task of selecting 'I understand the Risks' and add Exceptions, etc. etc. The fact is, I don't care about the risks. I would rather this computer melt into the ground than have to see that page ever again. I want to dance naked in untrusted pages and not give a damn about the consequences. I just never want to see that page again. Ever. For some sites (eg. wikipedia), the css doesn't load and I end up seeing them in plain text. As a result these sites are completely useless. Wasted hours trying to solve this for stackoverflow.com. These issues happen on the Firefox on my Windows XP machine as well (also using the same proxy). I don't want to export/import certificates or create exceptions for every site that shows this bloody page. I just want this page gone. I don't want Firefox to tell me what's safe and what's not. Also, my system time and date are correct. I've also tried the lies on this page too with no good results. Edit: I've also tried the whole going into the Advance-Certificates-validation setup page and unchecked 'Use the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to confirm the current validity of certificates' checkbox. Nothing happened even after restarting firefox or rebooting. I need help. Thanks.

• Setting up a global MySQL Cluster in the cloud

  I'm giving the question an overhaul to more specifically identify where I need help. I use two tools to manage a bunch of cloud server: Puppet and Rundeck. Both of these can be configured to use a mysql backend. I'd like to setup an instance of each application in both the U.S., and the U.K., treating the U.K. servers as hot stand-bys in case of failure in the U.S. I want to use a MySql cluster so that the data is automatically replicated from the U.S. to the U.K. Because these are hot standbys, high performance is not a goal. Redundancy and data integrity are most important. My question revolves around the setup of the mysql cluster. I want to run three servers, each one running a data node, a sql node, and a management node. Is this a valid configuration for mysql server? If so, could someone point me in the right direction for creating such a setup? I've downloaded the offical tarball, and the official debian, and the documentation for them contradicts many of the online tutorials. I'm installing on Ubuntu 10.04.

• Cisco FWSM -> ASA upgrade broke our mail server

  We send mail with unicode asian characters to our mail server on the other side of our WAN... immediately after upgrading from a FWSM running 2.3(2) to an ASA5550 running 8.2(5), we saw failures on mail jobs that contained unicode. The symptoms are pretty clear... using the ASA's packet capture utility, we snagged the traffic before and after it left the ASA... access-list PCAP line 1 extended permit tcp any host 192.0.2.25 eq 25 capture pcap_inside type raw-data access-list PCAP buffer 1500000 packet-length 9216 interface inside capture pcap_outside type raw-data access-list PCAP buffer 1500000 packet-length 9216 interface WAN I downloaded the pcaps from the ASA by going to https://<fw_addr>/pcap_inside/pcap and https://<fw_addr>/pcap_outside/pcap... when I looked at them with Wireshark Follow TCP Stream, the inside traffic going into the ASA looks like this EHLO metabike AUTH LOGIN YzFwbUlciXNlck== cZUplCVyXzRw But the same mail leaving the ASA on the outside interface looks like this... EHLO metabike AUTH LOGIN YzFwbUlciXNlck== XXXXXXXXXXXX The XXXX characters are concerning... I fixed the issue by disabling ESMTP inspection: wan-fw1(config)# policy-map global_policy wan-fw1(config-pmap)# class inspection_default wan-fw1(config-pmap-c)# no inspect esmtp wan-fw1(config-pmap-c)# end The $5 question... our old FWSM used SMTP fixup without issues... mail went down at the exact moment that we brought the new ASAs online... what specifically is different about the ASA that it is now breaking this mail? Note: usernames / passwords / app names were changed... don't bother trying to Base64-decode this text.

• How do I set up postfix to store e-mail in a file instead of relaying it?

  I want to run a staging copy of a production server on a local environment. The system runs a PHP application, which sends e-mail to customers in various scenarios and I want to make sure no e-mail is ever sent from the staging environment. I can tweak the code so it uses a dummy e-mail sender, but i'd like to run the exact same code as the production environment. I can use a different MTA (Postfix is just what we use in production), but I'd like something that is easy to set up under Debian/Ubuntu :) So, I'd like to set up the local Postfix install to store all e-mail in (one or more) files instead of relaying it. Actually, I don't really care how it's stored as long as it's feasible to check the e-mail that was sent. Even a set up option that tells postfix to keep the e-mail in the mail queue would work (I can purge the queue when I reload the staging server with a copy from production). I know this is possible, I just haven't found any good solution online for what seems like a fairly common need. Thanks!
