Are there any good alternative wiki's to MediaWiki out there for a small business? Mostly we are just wanting to use it for documentation. MediaWiki is a fine (and slightly outdated) piece of software, but it doesn't even officially support basic things like controlling who has access to what page/article, which is an important feature for us.
You want access to Oracle Technology Network updates from a mobile device, you say? Well you can have that today.
The official Oracle app for iOS, Android, and BB is useful for many things, but my personal favorite is the "Developers" channel:
From there, it's trivial to consume links to things tagged by the OTN team - which may include "home" content or curated links from other places:
All in all, it's a good way to stay in touch!
<b>Serverwatch:</b> "Based on Oracle's recent actions, it seems the company is hell-bent on driving as many of its potential customers as possible away from the UNIX offerings it acquired from Sun and into the arms of Red Hat and other enterprise Linux vendors."

I use my laptop TOSHIBA, 4gig RAM, more 40gig free disks spaces and Vista Home Premium 64bits with service pack 2.
I installed Oracle VM VirtalBox with success, after I installed UBUNTU version 8 with success !
I need to transfer files between Vista and UBUNTU on the same laptop, how I can do that ?
Can I use SAMBA ? I try to use SAMBA but it is not success ! How I can install SAMBA on UBUNTU v.8 ?
In a prior article on Oracle's Block Browser and Editor tool (BBED), the installation of the tool was covered. In this article, we'll look at starting a session using a simple database and see how to view data.
A few years ago I was speaking at a conference in Raleigh, NC where Ted Neward and I found a fun way to promote a Java vs. .NET debate that was planned one evening. We stood in the middle of a crowd during one of the breaks and starting “arguing” about Java vs. .NET with one another. Our voice levels quickly raised and we ended it by slapping each other across the face with a glove to request a challenge. It was a great way to segue to our announcing of the actual debate planned later that evening....(read more)
How to assign an user account to a client machine in Windows Small Business Server 2003. I read here how to do that in 2011 (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc527565.aspx) but I can't find the documentation in 2003.
I've examine the properties in the client computer list in the admin server tools, and also in the users list, but I don't see any tab for machine or user assignation.
Thank you.
By: Steve Cox, Vice President, Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies
Signs of the resurging economy continue to sprout, with green shoots rising across different sectors and industries. With the economy on the rebound, businesses are increasing their investment in technology to keep up with growth and evolving demands; as proof, Gartner recently increased its worldwide IT spending forecast for 2012 to $3.6 trillion, anticipating a 3 percent increase from 2011 spending.
One of the segments most reliant on technology to catapult growth is midsize companies – established businesses leveraging every competitive efficiency and advantage to compete with much larger enterprises. We find that to compete against the big guys, they need to create an internal technology infrastructure to fuel that growth. Goodbye, spreadsheets and hello modern ERP.
While many businesses postponed upgrading or replacing financial and HR management systems during the recession, now some have started dusting off RFPs and revisiting technology options. Years ago, midsize organizations used spreadsheet-based systems and processes to manage employees, customers, partners, products and revenue. We’ve found that as companies scale up, they are apt to avoid heavily customizing their existing systems, and instead are more prone to standardize on a modern, enterprise-class ERP system.
Modern ERP platforms enable growing companies to immediately address the most pressing challenges – accounting, talent management, customer retention, et. al. Midsize companies implement these systems and processes to help them earn more, go public or expand globally.
And today, choice is a primary factor when selecting an ERP solution. Businesses have more deployment options now than ever before, depending on their unique structures and needs. Whether the preference is on demand, cloud, hosted or on premise, a modular, scalable deployment is available to meet the need.
With modern ERP systems, business that once struggled to do more with fewer resources have access to the same quality tools as larger competitors. By adopting top tier ERP systems tailored to individual business needs, midsize companies can support business operations while creating an enterprise system that seamlessly scales up to fuel future growth. Meaning that the ERP decision that your company makes today, will have legs to serve your business for years to come.
A current draft of the "National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace" has been posted by the Department of Homeland Security. This question is not asking about privacy or constitutionality, but about how this act will impact developers' business models and development strategies.
When the post was made I was reminded of Jeff's November blog post regarding an internet driver's license. Whether that is a perfect model or not, both approaches are attempting to handle a shared problem (of both developers and end users): How do we establish an online identity?
The question I ask here is, with respect to the various burdens that would be imposed on developers and users, what are some of the major, foreseeable implementation issues that will arise from the current U.S. Government's proposed solution?
For a quick primer on the setup, jump to page 12 for infrastructure components, here are two stand-outs:
An Identity Provider (IDP) is responsible for the processes associated with enrolling a
subject, and establishing and maintaining the digital identity associated with an individual or NPE. These processes include identity vetting and proofing, as well as revocation, suspension, and recovery of the digital identity. The IDP is responsible for issuing a credential, the information object or device used during a transaction to provide evidence of the subject’s identity; it may also provide linkage to authority, roles, rights, privileges, and other attributes.
The credential can be stored on an identity medium, which is a device or object (physical or virtual) used for storing one or more credentials, claims, or attributes related to a subject. Identity media are widely available in many formats, such as smart cards, security chips embedded in PCs, cell phones, software based certificates, and USB devices. Selection of the appropriate credential is implementation specific and dependent on the risk tolerance of the participating entities.
Here are the first considered actionable components of the draft:
Action 1: Designate a Federal Agency to Lead the Public/Private Sector Efforts Associated with Achieving the Goals of the Strategy
Action 2: Develop a Shared, Comprehensive Public/Private Sector Implementation Plan
Action 3:Accelerate the Expansion of Federal Services, Pilots, and Policies that Align with the Identity Ecosystem
Action 4:Work Among the Public/Private Sectors to Implement Enhanced Privacy
Protections
Action 5:Coordinate the Development and Refinement of Risk Models and Interoperability
Standards
Action 6: Address the Liability Concerns of Service Providers and Individuals
Action 7: Perform Outreach and Awareness Across all Stakeholders
Action 8: Continue Collaborating in International Efforts
Action 9: Identify Other Means to Drive Adoption of the Identity Ecosystem across the
Nation
I'm currently discussing with my Oracle DBA Collegue that request a root access on our production servers.
I'm not so hot to let him use the root access on our production servers.
He is arguing that he need it to perform some operations like restarting the server and some other obscure arguments.
The point is that I'm not agree with him because I've set him a Oracle user/group and a dba group where Oracle user belong. Everything is running smoothy and without any root permissions for now.
I also think that all administrative tasks like scheduled server restart and so one need to be operated by the proper administrator (The Systems administrator on our case) to avoid any kind of issues related to a misunderstanding of the infrastructure interactions.
So, I need the help of both, sysadmins and Oracle DBAs to lead me on the correct direction.
If my collegue really need this rights I'll give him, but I'm just basically quite affraid of that because of security and integrity concerns.
I know that my collegue is really good as a Oracle DBA and he know is work very well, but I also know that I've very few cases where a software and its admin really need root access.
Once again, I'm not looking for pros/cons but rather an advice on the way that I should take to deal with this situation.
Is there any legal reason why you can't use the Home versions of Windows 7 or Vista in a business environment?
The technical differences and limitations are well documented online but I can't find anything that says there is a legal restriction like there is for the Home editions of Microsoft Office.
A few years ago we decided to increase our investments in documenting retail processes and architectures. There were several goals but the main two were to help retailers maximize the value they derive from our software and help system integrators implement our software faster. The sale is only part of our success metric -- its actually more important that the customer realize the benefits of the software. That's when we actually celebrate.
This week many of our customers are gathered in Chicago to discuss their successes during our annual Crosstalk conference. That provides the perfect forum to announce the release of the Oracle Retail Reference Library. The RRL is available for free to Oracle Retail customers and partners. It contains 1000s of hours of work and represents years of experience in the retail industry. The Retail Reference Library is composed of three offerings:
Retail Reference Model
We've been sharing the RRM for several years now, with lots of accolades. The RRM is a set of business process diagrams at varying levels of granularity. This release marks the debut of Visio documents, which should make it easier for retailers to adopt and edit the diagrams. The processes represent an approximation of the Oracle Retail software, but at higher levels they are pretty generic and therefore usable with other software as well. Using these processes, the business and IT are better able to communicate the expectations of the software. They can be used to guide customization when necessary, and help identify areas for optimization in the organization.
Retail Reference Architecture
When embarking on a software implementation project, it can be daunting to start from a blank sheet of paper. So we offer the RRA, a comprehensive set of documents that describe the retail enterprise in terms of logical architecture, physical deployments, and systems integration. These documents and diagrams describe how all the systems typically found in a retailer enterprise work together. They serve as a way to jump-start implementations using best practices we've captured over the years.
Retail Semantic Glossary
Have you ever seen two people argue over something because they're using misaligned terminology? Its a huge waste and happens all the time. The Retail Semantic Glossary is a simple application that allows retailers to define terms and metrics in a centralized database. This initial version comes with limited content with the goal of adding more over subsequent releases. This is the single source for defining key performance indicators, metrics, algorithms, and terms so that the retail organization speaks in a consistent language.
These three offerings are downloaded from MyOracleSupport separately and linked together using the start page above. Everything is navigated using a Web browser. See the Oracle Retail Documentation blog for more details.

One might expect Oracle to be doing everything in its power to discourage customers from moving away from UNIX. Yet the company seems determined to hawk Linux.
The SOA infrastructure database is used by SOA Suite products like BPEL PM, BAM, BPM, Human Worklow, B2B and Mediator. A SOA administrator is involved in many different tasks like installation, upgrade, performance tuning and other administrative topics. Another important one is purging - see the posting for this: SOA Suite 11g Purging Guide.
We have implemented a guide to help with thess tasks: SOA 11g Infrastructure Database: Installation, Maintenance and Administration Guide.

I've been asked to find out "what's out there" when it comes to workflow engines.
We have projects where a workflow based development environment makes sense. I've looked a little into jBPM but it seemed to have a steep learning curve.
Google seems to take me to commercial products or products that I think are open source but instead have very limited "community editions". I could simply be searching for the wrong terms.
What I would like to know are what actual workflow based products have you used at your company and to what degree of success or failure was it? Would you use it again?
Thanks.
