  • Is there any reason to prefer UTF-16 over UTF-8?

    Examining the attributes of UTF-16 and UTF-8, I can't find any reason to prefer UTF-16. However, checking out Java and C#, it looks like strings and chars there default to UTF-16. I was thinking that it might be for historic reasons, or perhaps for performance reasons, but couldn't find any information. Anyone knows why these languages chose UTF-16? And is there any valid reason for me to do that as well?

    I can see how a cipher can be developed using substitutions and keys, and how those two things can become more and more complex, thus offering some protection from decryption through brute-force approaches. But specifically I'm wondering: what other major concepts beyond substitution and key are involved? is the protection/secrecy of the key a greater vulnerability than the strength of the encryption? why does encryption still hold up when the key is 'public' ? are performance considerations a major obstacle to the development of more secure encryption?

  • safari 5 resize flash application

    Just notice that after updating to Safari 5 (mac) all the flash applications that respond to resize events got sluggish. try: http://www.tutorio.com/media/flash/liquid-demo.html this works great with firefox 3.6.3, Chrome can deal with it fine, although not so fast as Firefox, but new Safari gives a awful experience, distorting all content if you do fast resizing. Any ideas why is this happening / and how can I get a better performance with safari browsers?

    Why would bitmap outperform vector? My Flash is for a large Kiosk, with rich media requirements and must function accurately as a counter. I want to keep everything vector for scalability. When I did a simple FPS test, I noticed my Bitmap version performed perfectly, and the all vector file was noticeably slower.     Hi all, I am writing an iPad app that downloads a rather large .csv file and parses the file into objects stored in Core Data. The program keeps crashing, and I've run it along with the Allocations performance tool and can see that it's eating up memory.     Hi, I have a compressed file in the disk, that a partitioned in blocks. I read a block from disk decompress it to memory and the read the data. It is possible to create a producer/consumer, one thread that recovers compacted blocks from disk and put in a queue and another thread that decompress and read the data? Will the performance be better? Thanks!

  • Best way to figure out why didReceiveMemoryWarning is always getting called on a UIViewController

    I have a UIViewController and I'm noticing that I've done something to where the didReceiveMemoryWarning method is getting called every time I run it on an actual device. I've run the project with Run Run With Performance Tool Object Allocations (and Leaks also). There are no leaks but I have no idea how to read or understand the "Object Allocations" data that is displayed. So ... How do I read this information and what is/are the best ways to figure out (and resolve) why this is happening? Thanks

    Are there any downsides to UPX-ing my 32-bit Python 2.6.4 development environment EXE/PYD/DLL files? The reason I'm asking is that I frequently use a custom PY2EXE script that UPX's copies of these files on every build. Yes, I could get fancy and try to cache UPXed files, but I think a simpler, safer, and higher performance solution would be for me to just UPX my Python 2.6.4 directory once and be done with it. Thoughts? Malcolm
