• Update table.column with another table.column with common joined column

  Hit a speed bump, trying to update some column values in my table from another table. This is what is supposed to happen when everything works Correct all the city, state entries in tblWADonations by creating an update statement that moves the zip city from the joined city/state zip field to the tblWADonations city state TBL NAME | COLUMN NAMES tblZipcodes with zip,city,State tblWADonations with zip,oldcity,oldstate This is what I have so far: UPDATE tblWADonations SET oldCity = tblZipCodes.city, oldState = tblZipCodes.state FROM tblWADonations INNER JOIN tblZipCodes ON tblWADonations.zip = tblZipCodes.zip Where oldCity <> tblZipcodes.city; There seems to be easy ways to do this online but I am overlooking something. Tried this by hand and in editor this is what it kicks back. Msg 8152, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated. Please include a sql statement or where I need to make the edit so I can mark this post as a reference in my favorites. Thanks!

• Fastest way to calculate an X-bit bitmask?

  I have been trying to solve this problem for a while, but couldn't with just integer arithmetic and bitwise operators. However, I think its possible and it should be fairly easy. What am I missing? The problem: to get an integer value of arbitrary length (this is not relevant to the problem) with it's X least significant bits sets to 1 and the rest to 0. For example, given the number 31, I need to get an integer value which equals 0x7FFFFFFF (31 least significant bits are 1 and the rest zeros). Of course, using a loop OR-ing a shifted 1 to an integer X times will do the job. But that's not the solution I'm looking for. It should be more in the direction of (X << Y - 1), thus using no loops.

  Hi, I am exploring android and developement and I found one problem. My app UI is defined in main.xml I have 2 texts and 2 buttons defined - easy app. I read that I may be able to change TEXT in the ACTIVITY using the setText() method. And thats the problem - how do I POINT the setText() Method? How do I tell it to change a specified text? If I would declare the TextView inside the Activity with NEW TextView NAME Object, I would just need to use NAME.setText(STRING)... But I didnt so i dont have anything like NAME of the object? How can this be done? I read something about r.IDs but I truly dont have a idea how to use them, where to find them and how to implement it .... Please advise Thank you Oliver

  Hi, I'm setting up a little thing for connection pooling and on of the more common bugs that we have occur(its always an easy fix, but we just can't remember reader.Close()!) it is when we have a connection that is used by a lot of classes/methods and one method opens a data reader and forgets to close it. This isn't really bad cause a lot of times all you have to do is go into the debugger and go up one level and see the function before it was and check if it had an unclosed data reader. Now, here is the bigger problem. In this connection pool, if a datareader is open, then it's not known until a thread gets a connection and tries to use it and the thing that originally opened the data reader may no longer even be alive. So quite simply, how can you detect if a data reader is open on a connection and is there a way to close the reader without closing the connection?

• How can I differentiate between the .net WebBrowser component and an actual browser?

  OK, so we have an online downloads store accessed via our software. Recently we've had requests to allow downloads via normal browsers and it's fairly easy just to slap a download page on. The problem is that it would be confusing to people having two download links, one for the software and one for their web browser, so we want to differentiate between the two and only show the relevant download link. From what I've gathered, the .net WebBrowser component is the same as IE and uses the same User Agent, so we can't use that unless we subclass the WebBrowser in the software to make it use a specific User Agent. It's the more sensible option, but we'd have to roll out another updated version, which is less than ideal. Are there any other ways to tell if someone's accessing a site via the .net component? My only other alternative is to copy the store to a different address with the different download links and send people there. Again this is doable, but not ideal.

I'm also interested in mobile (android..) and embedded development. Currently I install everything on my main OS, even I use it a little. I use VMs a little. Should I use separate VM for each kind of development (like one for .Net/Mono, another C++, one for mobile and one for db only, one for xyz things etc) Keep primary development environment on main os and moveothers in VM. main os should be messed up keep things easy to organize (must) performance should be optimal

• How to make an Android UI with images from a designer delivered as layers

  I hired a designer to help me redesign the UI for my Android app. For each Activity he gave me an image for the background, which includes any static content like fancy frames for text content; plus images for the buttons, which must fit in to the background image in exact places, to fit into the frames in the background image. However, since Android devices have different screen sizes and aspect ratios, it's easy to fit the background image by itself with android:scaleType="centerInside", but how can I get all the other images to fit in with background exactly, to the pixel? If they didn't have to fit in with the background, I would just set the exact width and height for each ImageButton, but depending on how the background scales (based on the screen size and ratio) they might end up not aligned correctly.   All the security stuff I have worked with in the past in ASP.Net for the most part has been role based. This is easy enough to implement and ASP.Net is geared for this type of security model. However, I am looking for something a little more fine grained than simple role based security. Essentially I want to be able to write code like this: if(SecurityService.CanPerformOperation("SomeUpdateOperation")){ // perform some update logic here } I would also need row level security access like this: if(SecurityService.CanPerformOperation("SomeViewOperation", SomeEntityIdentifier)){ // Allow user to see specific data } Again, fine grained access control. Is there anything like this already built? Some framework that I can drop into ASP.Net and start using, or am I going to have to build this myself?

• CoffeeScript on Windows?

  How can I try CoffeeScript on Windows? The installation instructions are only for *nix: http://jashkenas.github.com/coffee-script/#installation EDIT: I don't think I need node.js -- I am just writing javascript for web pages, (using some jQuery, etc)...So all I really want is simple way to write CoffeeScript and "compile" it down to JavaScript. Isn't there a Ruby program that would do it? Or even better, a windows exe? (i dont use ASP.NET either...i use Python/Django) FINAL EDIT: Thanks for the help -- In the end I installed VirtualBox and created a virtual Linux machine which I now use to program coffeescript with node.js. (It was surprisingly easy to start using VirtualBox -- easier than doing the Cygwin thing). I run jEdit (for which you can get a CoffeeScript syntax highlighter) and I put the corresponding js file side-by-side with the coffeescript file. When I compile the coffeescript to js, the editor automatically re-loads the new javascript, which allows me to check that it has compiled the way I expect (which is a good thing while learning the coffeescript syntax).

  In my Eclipse plugin I'd like to send a Java console output (loaded from some other system) to the Java Stack Trace Console. I pseudo-code it'd be something like: get the console output from the other system obtain a reference to a JavaStackTraceConsolePage instance send the text to the console page display the console i.e. switch from my plugin's view to the Console view Step 1 is easy as it is specific to my plugin. As for the rest I'm pretty much clueless - Google and stackoverflow.com don't come up with useful references or how-tos. Since the class JavaStackTraceConsolePage is part of an internal Eclipse API (org.eclipse.jdt.internal.debug.ui.console) I'm not even sure whether it's doable at all.

• Creating a specialised view filtering form in Rails

  G'day guys, I have a current set of data, and I generate multiple analyses of this data (each analysis into its own active record item called a pricing_interval) using a helper function at the moment. Currently to analyse the set of data, you need a start time(using datetime_select) an integer (using text_field) and a name (using text_field) I would like on submission of the form to be redirected to the index page of my pricing_interval, as the values will be re-generated. Manually generating a range proves that my helper methods work. How would I build a form that on submit would send parameters to a function in the form of (date,integer,name) so that it could immediately begin work whilst redirecting the user to server/pricing_intervals Anything at all would help, I've spent hours over the past few days trying to get the rails form syntax working properly to no avail, a really straightforward guide to what I would implement to get this working would be amazingly appreciated. I've looked through the form guides, as I'm not creating an object, but merely parsing params, there's got to be an easy way to do this, right?

• Audio Conversion C#

  What is the best way to convert various audio formats to PCM? For example: mp3, evrc, ogg vox. Is there a library out there that will allow me to implement this relatively easily? EDIT: I guess my initial question wasn't really what I needed. Most of the libs I have found are file converters. What I need is a block converter, where I pass in a 1Kb block of vox data and it returns its converted PCM block. Of course I’ll have to tell the converter what type of data it is and various pieces of codec information. The solution I am going for is to save and VOIP formats into a common wav format and to play that conformed file in real time. I thought there should be an easy way to do this because all audio is eventually turned into PCM before it is outputted anyways.

• What is the best database for my needs?

  I am currently using MS SQL Server 2008 but I'm not sure it it is the best system for this particular task. I have a single table like so: PK_ptA PK_ptB DateInserted LookupColA LookupColB ... LookupColF DataCol (ntext) A common query is SELECT TOP(1000000) DataCol FROM table WHERE LookupColA=x AND LookupColD=y AND LookupColE=z ORDER BY DateInserted DESC The table has about a billion rows with 5 million inserted per day. My main problem with SQL Server is that it isn't too easy to shard or spread out the datafiles. Also, exporting seems to max out at 1000rows per second (about 1MB/s) which seems very slow. Another problem I have is, with SQL Server, if I want to add a new LookupCol the log file grows enormously requiring a large amount of rarely used free space on tap. Are there any obvious better solutions for this problem?

  I have a Dictionary to map a certain type to a certain generic object for that type. For example: typeof(LoginMessage) maps to MessageProcessor<LoginMessage> Now the problem is to retrieve this generic object at runtime from the Dictionary. Or to be more specific: To cast the retrieved object to the specific generic type. I need it to work something like this: Type key = message.GetType(); MessageProcessor<key> processor = messageProcessors[key] as MessageProcessor<key>; Hope there is a easy solution to this. Edit: I do not want to use Ifs and switches. Due to performance issues I cannot use reflection of some sort either.

  All, I have a PHP application written in Zend Framework with MVC style. I plan to use Zend_DB to connect to the MySQL database and process queries. I am looking for a wrapper class which makes it easy to use Zend_DB class. This wrapper class will have a constructor that connects to the Mysql db using Zend_DB. It will also have a method to return a singleton instance for each and every db connection made. Something like: $pptDB = PPTDB::getInstance(); $pptDB->setFetchMode(PPTDB::FETCH_OBJ); $result = $pptDB->fetchRow('SELECT * FROM bugs WHERE bug_id = 2'); echo $result->bug_description; Where class PPTDB extends Zend_DB Is this something feasible to have? There are a lot of philosophies on development of software. Like the UNIX-philosophy. Often vague and not easy to understand. I am looking for statements such as the one cited below. Which you can ask about the software when it's in the design-stage, is ready to be coded, and has been coded and is ready for launch. The software I am talking about, is of course the software made for the end-user. Ken Rockwell wrote: "I expect that it will let me get more accomplished in less time." (Here one could ask "will this let me get more accomplished in less time?")

  I need help on looking for a best solution of a web based open source FTP client that has a progress bar, e-mail notifications and easy file sharing with others. I am looking to set up one for our print department, and you send it is really getting expensive. I've look into net2ftp.com but styling it, is a bit pain in the bumbum....Also, Uploadify is also an option but with my lack of PHP knowledge I can't make it to actually do what I want it to do. Let me know if you have buymp into and interesting tool like it.

• StreamWriter Problem - 2 Spaces Written as Hex '20 c2 a0' instead of Hex '20 20'

  I'm writing a bunch of strings to a file using a string writer but I've discovered a problem when I look at the file created in hex, and that is that one of the spaces (x20) is replaced with a non-breaking space instead (xc2 a0) when there are 2 spaces separating words. I don't know if this is a big deal but I would like to know if there is an easy resolution to this? Here's what I'm seeing: 20 c2 a0 53 57 45 45 50 Dump = "  SWEEP" But I would like it to always be: 20 20 53 57 45 45 50 Dump = " SWEEP" Note that the c2 a0 aren't visible here but the dump looks something like 'A.' when I use the Notepad++ Hex Plugin. • Extrapolation using fft in octave

  Using GNU octave, I'm computing a fft over a piece of signal, then eliminating some frequencies, and finally reconstructing the signal. This give me a nice approximation of the signal ; but it doesn't give me a way to extrapolate the data. Suppose basically that I have plotted three periods and a half of f: x -> sin(x) + 0.5*sin(3*x) + 1.2*sin(5*x) and then added a piece of low amplitude, zero-centered random noise. With fft/ifft, I can easily remove most of the noise ; but then how do I extrapolate 3 more periods of my signal data? (other of course that duplicating the signal). The math way is easy : you have a decomposition of your function as an infinite sum of sines/cosines, and you just need to extract a partial sum and apply it anywhere. But I don't quite get the programmatic way... Thanks!

  Hi , I am looking at validation of some text boxes for somethings like required, minlength, max length, email etc... I am able to get examples that work fine on submit button on page. I want to do this validation on a button click which will only raise a ajax request and not submit of page. On internet all the sample is found was with submit button. Is there a easy way to change this code a little bit o make it work for non submit button click or any new jquery or java plugin to do the same. I am using the jquery.validation.js for now. This works with submit buttons. Any kind of help with suggestion or help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Generating a Call Hierarchy for dynamicly invoked method

  Hello, Today's world of dynamic invoke, reflection and runtime injection just doesn't play well with traditional tools such as ctags, doxygen and CDOC. I am searching for a method call hierarchy visualization tool that can display both static and dynamic method invocations. It should be easy to use, light during execution and provide helpful detailed information about the recorded runtime session. Now I guess Callgrind could be considered a valid solution for the family C. What tool / technique could you suggest to create a call graph for both static and dynamic method invocation for JVM based bytecode? The intended end result is a graphical display (preferably interactive) which can show path from main() to each method that was invoked. During research for this post I stumbled upon javashot, it seems that this is the kind of approach I'm aiming at, I would prefer that this would be integrated into a kind of profiler or alike which than can be used from within my IDE (Eclipse, IntelliJ, Netbeans and alike).
