  • "unresolvable problem" error when upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04

    So I have solved this issue, but now I have another problem: An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. I am not upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu and I am not running a pre-release either. I have unchecked all my 3rd-party packages using Ubuntu Software Manager, EditSoftware Sources... What else might be wrong? I've edited the catalina.sh file to add: echo $0 echo $1 ...and I see: catalina.sh start ...etc when I use: ./catalina.sh start Why does catalina.sh not use the parameter?

  • How do I log which process is deleting a file on Windows XP?

    I'm having an issue with a file getting deleted seemingly randomly throughout the day. The vendor of the software whose file is getting deleete says that another piece of software installed on the computer is deleting it, while the other software's vendor says the opposite. I've tried using Process Monitor so I can pinpoint exactly what's deleting it, but even when filtered specifically to that file, createfile operations are being triggered a few times a second, and I can't seem to filter it to deletions specifically. Is there a tool or script I can use to specifically monitor deletion attempts on a single file?

And we've heard from the likes of: "Uncle Bob" Martin - Who warned us about "the consequences of making a mess". Michael C. Feathers - Who gave us guidance for 'Working Effectively With Legacy Code'. So certainly the software engineering community is aware of these issues. But I feel like our aggregate society does not appreciate how these issues can plague working systems and applications. As Steve McConnell notes: ...Unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. [Much like NYC and the steam pipes.] My Question: Is there a way that we can avoid the software equivalent of NYC and the steam pipes?

  • Text tagging/analysis tool for Mac

    I'm a doctoral student doing research in the humanities. As part of my research I have gathered together a lot of interview text. To analyse this data I want to be able to easily tag sections of text with keywords (the tags need to be able to overlap, and perhaps be organised hierarchically) and later be able to collate those sections from across multiple files. I need to be able to do this on a Mac. It feels like a simple task but I can't find any software for doing it that isn't either horribly clunky or a massive overkill worth hundreds of pounds. Is there any good software for doing this, or are there any good ways of doing it with other software?

  • Need ideas for an innovation week

    So 4 times a year we have an innovation week (to even out the odd sprint releases). This whole week is dedicated to experimenting with new technology/ideas that could potentially help progress the software department or the company as a whole, and serve as sort of a starting point for new ideas and brainstorming. For example, the last one contained a lot of projects. One was the re-design of our web app into more of a Web 2.0 look and feel using JQuery and a lot of cool CSS tricks. Another was a proposal for a new bug tracking software as opposed to the clearly outdated one we use, and another was a very cool JQuery/Js design that could show the same page to multiple users on different computers and allow each of them to take "charge" of the page, disabling the other one from doing anything, and vice versa, seeing all updates in real time -- sort of like Netmeeting through Js. Well, this is my first one as a new employee so I wanted to think of something cool. We get one week (anywhere from 40-60 hours or so), and we usually pair up or do this in groups of 3-4, depending on how many projects there are. Projects have to get approved but usually that doesn't prove to be too difficult. We are in the financial analysis software industry if the domain was leading you guys to think of anything helpful. I am primarily working on a web app in MVC 2 at the moment using a lot of JQuery and a C# backend. Do you guys have any idea of something that would be cool/beneficial/worth it?

  • I'm Sick of Web Development - What avenues are open to me ...?

    I've been working as a web developer since 1998, mostly with ASP/ASP.Net/C# but began as a Java coder (JSP mostly). Its been fun but now I'm feeling jaded and can see the need for a change. I've considered iOS/Cocoa development and Android development recently (Objective-C looks hard while I'm a former Java developer) but I'm not sure of Career opportunities being proficient in either would afford The incline of the learning curve - I just turned 40 and I know I'm not as sharp or as quick as I once was. Does anyone have any experiences/ opinions/ advice for me? Thanks.

I also have some software that needs certain files so I need to prepare them (via batch file). I have done a quick research however I haven't found the answer. Any help, link would be appreciated.     I am looking for an open-source minimalistic "message board" PHP software. Not a forum, more something like one simple facebook wall. The only thing a user can do is post a new message. With RSS, and able to run on flat files (no database) with Apache+PHP Authentication based on a configuration file, no management UI needed.   • Can I use the voice & SMS features of my GSM SIM through my laptop?

    My laptop (a Lenovo T410s) has an internal GSM modem (device manager calls it a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9205) that I'm currently using a regular (voice, data, text, etc) 3G SIM in. The data functionality works great through the Lenovo software & Windows 7 but I was wondering if I can use the other features (specifically voice & SMS) through Windows. Is it posisble to use the non-data features of my 3G SIM through my Qualcomm GSM modem? If so, what software is available to this end? If not, where is the restriction? (e.g. hardware, OS, driver, software) Thanks!
