• Virtualize a 64 bit guest OS on 32 bit host OS

  If you want to run a 64 bit virtual machine on a 32 bit host you have two options 1. VMWare Server (or a Workstation version that supports 64bit guests) 2. Sun Virtual box Though 64 bit guests on 32 bit hosts is possible, it requires that you are running x64 (not ia64) hardware. All the new Intel processors are 64 bit compatible (if you have T5200/T550 on your laptop, you are out of luck) VMWare has a free tool you can download to check whether your machine can run 64bit guests. Microsoft Vitual PC and Microsoft Windows Virtual PC do not support 64 bit guests. Also Hyper-V will run only on a 64 bit host. • login to account reverts to login screen, guest login ok

  When I get to the login screen, I put my password, and I only get a black screen for 2 seconds, then we're back at the login screen. When I log in to the guest account everything works perfectly. What I've tried; I deleted .Xauthority as per instructions from elsewhere. No luck I removed 2 lines I put in .profile. No change Installed Gnome, but Unity, Unity 2D, various vers of gnome, same thing. according to other q/a's, this could be caused by lack of disk space. I have 80 gigs free, so I would assume it's not that if I Ctrl+Alt+F2 at login, I can login in to my account in the "terminal" with no problem. I would really appreciate any help to restore my account, and thank you very much beforehand

• Outlook users connected to exchange can email from other email accounts

  We have found an issue on our systems whereby an outlook user (both 2007 and 2010) connected to our Exchange server (2007) can send emails as other users using the following steps Within Outlook Click <New Email> Select the <From> button to show a list of accounts outlook contains, but it also shows the option Select<Other Email Address>. This brings up a small dialog box with another button which when selected allows the user to select an email from their contacts or the Active Directory. The user in most cases can select any email within the Active Directory and send an email as if it were coming from that selected email. It seems not everyone has this ability and I'm guessing it is something to do with settings in exchange or AD(version 6) or is there a group policy that can be implemented to stop users being able to do this. We have no idea what allows this and I have failed to find anything using Dr Google. No one has setup delegates within outlook but it does seem to be something similar? Does anyone know how to lock this down? Thanks in advance

• Folder Redirection Issues - Freezing, Strange Warnings

  I have Folder Redirection set up in a test environment for a couple accounts. I have followed the instructions for setting up the folder security settings here, and I can confirm that folders are created automatically by the system with the correct security settings when a user logs in. The GPO has been configured to automatically move user files up to the redirected folders, and this is working properly. Problems start occurring when a Windows 7 PC is in use. It is rare, but Explorer will lock up when performing a file write operation (move/copy/save from application). This results in the entire system being unusable, with only a hard reset resolving it (Task Manager doesn't start, the "three finger salute" does nothing, apps stop working). The mouse functions, but clicks do nothing. The other issue is that occasionally when copying/creating/modifying files a dialog box will pop up with the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from XYZ\cardenas to make changes to this folder." The folder that was created by copying an existing one has the correct security settings and lists me as the owner. My company will not be implementing Folder Redirection on XP, since we are making a "clean break" with implementing new technologies with the Windows 7 rollout, so this behavior has not been - nor will be - checked for in XP. Install & Setup doubleTwist Download and install doubleTwist using the defaults in the wizard… Installation takes several moments and you’ll see the progress while it finishes up. After installation is complete, sign up for an account if you don’t already have one. If you do have an account you can login right away. Enter in your username, email address, and password then click Sign Up.   You’ll get an confirmation email and need to activate the account before you can sign in. The person you send it to will get a link in their email that points to your My Feed page on the doubleTwist site.   There they can access the media you sent…in this example it’s a video podcast but you can share any media. Other Features Under My Profile you can change your avatar and personal information.   In Preferences you can choose where media is stored, its startup actions, podcast subscriptions, and manage device syncing. Conclusion It’s still in beta stage so expect some bugs, but overall doubleTwist is a solid media player that is easy to use with a clean interface. It’s simple and doesn’t try to do too much so is fairly easy on system resources. The main annoyance is it tries to catalog all of your media out of the box. Which may be alright for some users with smaller media collections, but very irritating to advanced users with large collections. Also there is currently no support for the Zune, but according to their forums, it’s on the way. At the time of this writing it’s in public beta and can be downloaded for XP, Vista, Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit), and Mac OSX. If you’re looking for an iTunes alternative that works with several different portable devices, you might want to give DoubleTwist a try. • Flex SDK the right tool for this project

  A client wants a site similar to this one (but different purpose): http://www.spokeo.com/search?q=Samantha+Dawes,+&s7=t30 where the user searches by name and a map is displayed with the count over each state. When the user clicks the count the list is displayed. I am a PHP developer (and have experience with C, C++, etc). Would Flex SDK, Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP, or Flash be the best tool? The Flex SDK http://www.adobe.com/products/flex.html looks promising and it looks like I can download it free without having to purchase Flash or Flex. Is that correct? Do you think this kind of project can be done with the Flex SDK? Without purchasing Flex or Flash? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

• ESXi 4.0 Guests Locking up

  I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant g5 with a 64bit Xeon processor and took advantage of the free license as I work for a public school. I created two instances of server 2003 from scratch, one to be the DC, DHCP, the other to be a file server and DNS/DHCP backup. I had both guests up and running fine, setup my user accounts, transferred the data, etc etc. Once I joined a client machine to the domain, I would find that both of my Windows guests would lock up. Sometimes it would be for five or so minutes, once it was overnight. The "locked up" state means that as far I could tell, all services were stopped; dhcp no longer handed out IP's, DNS stopped working, I couldn't RDP into the server. The ESXi host, my HP server, was still running fine. VSphere was working, and I could look at the performance of the individual guests.I would try Powering off the hosts from inside VSPhere, and the hosts would start powering off, but get stuck at 95%, and stay that way, sometimes only for 10 minutes, others for hours. Several times I had to restart ESXi from it's console in order to restart my machines. Now, can anyone tell me what is happening, and how I can fix it, or take steps to prevent it? I hired a consultant to come take a look at it, someone who's experience and knowledge I trust, and he told me he had never seen anything like this ever before. He spoke to a friend of his who is VM certified, and he also said he had never heard of this issue. Thanks for your replies, and I'll do my best to respond ASAP. Currently, the server is powered off, and I've reinstituted my nine year old Server 2000 boxes, and I'm considering installing ESXi 3.5. Does anyone know a host created in 4.0 will work in 3.5? I'd really like to avoid having to rebuild those accounts! I know 4.0 works on this server, as I have another server in another school with the same exact hardware running 4.0 fine. Brendan

• Advice for good web server development setup.

  A month or so ago I created my first LAMP stack and implemented a simple web site that exercised each letter in that acronym. However my development setup was much less than ideal. I don't really have a local test server, but instead I was writing all of my CGI scripts in vim while ssh'ed into the remote machine as root. Now I intend to start more serious development. Question: What is a good setup so that development goes as easily as possible? I would like to understand what is available to me along the lines of an IDE, subversion (or alternatives), uploading and downloading content, and just best practices. I'm pretty new at all of this. Also, feel free to point me at good websites. There's plenty of websites, but only people who are already heavily developing web content are able to quickly determine if they are good websites.

• UserAppDataPath in WPF

  In Windows Forms applications you were able to get to your user's roaming profile directory very easily using the Application.UserAppDataPath property. This folder allows you to store information for your program in a custom folder specifically for your program. The format of this directory looks like this: C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\COMPANY NAME\APPLICATION NAME\APPLICATION VERSION For example, on my Windows 7 64-bit system, this folder would look like this for a Windows Forms Application: C:\Users\PSheriff\AppData\Roaming\PDSA, Inc.\WindowsFormsApplication1\1.0.0.0 For some reason Microsoft did not expose this property from the Application object of WPF applications. I guess they think that we don't need this property in WPF? Well, sometimes we still do need to get at this folder. You have two choices on how to retrieve this property. Add a reference to the System.Windows.Forms.dll to your WPF application and use this property directly. Or, you can write your own method to build the same path. If you add a reference to the System.Windows.Forms.dll you will need to use System.Windows.Forms.Application.UserAppDataPath to access this property. Create a GetUserAppDataPath Method in WPF If you want to build this path you can do so with just a few method calls in WPF using Reflection. The code below shows this fairly simple method to retrieve the same folder as shown above. Since it's on the free site - I didn't want to violate any terms of agreement - so it doesn't mention Oracle explicitly. But if you wanted to actually do what the animation talks about with Oracle database - you need to configure the Oracle database to use Oracle Enterprise User Security. EUS requires OVD or OID and works with most popular LDAP servers including Active Directory and of course our newest Oracle Directory member - Directory Server Enterprise Edition (aka the former Sun directory).
