  • Windows Server 2008 R2 network adapter stops working, requires hard reboot

    TL;DR version: Turns out this was a Windows Server 2008 R2 kernel networking bug. After siccing Microsoft support on it, we (eventually) got an unpublished kernel hotfix from Microsoft to address it. If you, too, are experiencing mysterious low-level network driver failures requiring a reboot/bluescreen cycle, you might want that hotfix (or maybe Service Pack 1 whenever it is released, too.) We have been using HAProxy along with heartbeat from the Linux-HA project. We are using two linux instances to provide a failover. Each server has with their own public IP and a single IP which is shared between the two using a virtual interface (eth1:1) at IP: 69.59.196.211 The virtual interface (eth1:1) IP 69.59.196.211 is configured as the gateway for the windows servers behind them and we use ip_forwarding to route traffic. We are experiencing an occasional network outage on one of our windows servers behind our linux gateways. HAProxy will detect the server is offline which we can verify by remoting to the failed server and attempting to ping the gateway: Pinging 69.59.196.211 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 69.59.196.220: Destination host unreachable. Should we be defining our arp entries statically? I've always left arp alone since it works 99% of the time, but in this one instance it appears to be failing. Are there any additional troubleshooting steps we can take help resolve this issue? Swapping network cards and switches I noticed the link light on the port of the switch for the failed windows server was running at 100Mb instead of 1Gb on the failed interface. I moved the cable to several other open ports and the link indicated 100Mb for each port that I tried. I also swapped the cable with the same result. I tried changing the properties of the network card in windows and the server locked up and required a hard reset after clicking apply. This windows server has two physical network interfaces so I have swapped the cables and network settings on the two interfaces to see if the problem follows the interface. If the public interface goes down again we will know that it is not an issue with the network card. (We also tried another switch we have on hand, no change) Changing network hardware driver versions We've had the same problem with the latest Broadcom driver, as well as the built-in driver that ships in Windows Server 2008 R2. Replacing network cables As a last ditch effort we remembered another change that occurred was the replacement of all of the patch cords between our servers / switch. We had purchased two sets, one green of lengths 1ft - 3ft for the private interfaces and another set of red cables for the public interfaces. We swapped out all of the public interface patch cables with a different brand and ran our servers without issue for a full week ... aaaaaand then the problem recurred. Disable checksum offload, remove TProxy We also tried disabling TCP/IP checksum offload in the driver, no change. We're now pulling out TProxy and moving to a more traditional x-forwarded-for network arrangement without any fancy IP address rewriting. We'll see if that helps. Switch Virtualization providers On the off chance this was related to Hyper-V in some way (we do host Linux VMs on it), we switched to VMWare Server. No change. Switch host model We've reached the end of our troubleshooting rope and are now formally involving Microsoft support.     I'm just a java beginner. Do you have any tips there on how to determine errors. I'm trying to connect to mysql derby database. I don't know how to determine the error, there is no red line, but there is a message box that shows up when I try to run the program. All I want to do is to display the first record in the database.   • Apache on Win32: Slow Transfers of single, static files in HTTP, fast in HTTPS

    I have a weird problem with Apache 2.2.15 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. Basically, I am trying to serve larger static files, images, videos etc. The download seems to be capped at around 550kB/s even over 100Mbit LAN. I tried other protocols (FTP/FTPS/FTP+ES/SCP/SMB), and they are all in the multi-megabyte range. The strangest thing is that, when using Apache with HTTPS instead of HTTP, it serves very fast, around 2.7MByte/s! I also tried the AnalogX SimpleWWW server just to test the plain HTTP speed of it, and it gave me a healthy 3.3Mbyte/s. I am at a total loss here. I searched the web, and tried to change the following Apache configuration directives in httpd.conf, one at a time, mostly to no avail at all: SendBufferSize 1048576 #(tried multiples of that too, up to 100Mbytes) EnableSendfile Off #(minor performance boost) EnableMMAP Off Win32DisableAcceptEx HostnameLookups Off #(default) I also tried to tune the following registry parameters, setting their values to 4194304 in decimal (they are REG_DWORD), and rebooting afterwards: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultReceiveWindow HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultSendWindow Additionally, I tried to install mod_bw, which sets the event timer precision to 1ms, and allows for bandwidth throttling. According to some people it boosts static file serving performance when set to unlimited bandwidth for everybody. Unfortunately, it did nothing for me. So: AnalogX HTTP: 3300kB/s Gene6 FTPD, plain: 3500kB/s Gene6 FTPD, Implicit and Explicit SSL, AES256 Cipher: 1800-2000kB/s freeSSHD: 1100kB/s SMB shared folder: about 3000kB/s Apache HTTP, plain: 550kB/s Apache HTTPS: 2700kB/s Clients that were used in the bandwidth testing: Internet Explorer 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Firefox 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Chrome 13 (HTTP, HTTPS) Opera 11.60 (HTTP, HTTPS) wget under CygWin (HTTP, HTTPS) FileZilla (FTP, FTPS, FTP+ES, SFTP) Windows Explorer (SMB) Generally, transfer speeds are not too high, but that's because the server machine is an old quad Pentium Pro 200MHz machine with 2GB RAM. However, I would like Apache to serve at at least 2Mbyte/s instead of 550kB/s, and that already works with HTTPS easily, so I fail to see why plain HTTP is so crippled. I am using a Kerio Winroute Firewall, but no Throttling and no special filters peeking into HTTP traffic, just the plain Firewall functionality for blocking/allowing connections. The Apache error.log (Loglevel info) shows no warnings, no errors. Also nothing strange to be seen in access.log. I have already stripped down my httpd.conf to the bare minimum just to make sure nothing is interfering, but that didn't help either. If you have any idea, help would be greatly appreciated, since I am totally out of ideas! Thanks! Edit: I have now tried a newer Apache 2.2.21 to see if it makes any difference. However, the behaviour is exactly the same. Edit 2: KM01 has requested a sniff on the HTTP headers, so here comes the LiveHTTPHeaders output (an extension to Firefox). The Output is generated on downloading a single file called "elephantsdream_source.264", which is an H.264/AVC elementary video stream under an Open Source license. I have taken the freedom to edit the URL, removing folders and changing the actual servers domain name to www.mydomain.com.   • Problem using easy_install on Windows 7, 64 bit. (cannot find python.exe)

    Hi, I have just now installed Python 2.6 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) Lenovo t61p laptop. I have downloaded Sphinx and nose and apparently installed them correctly using python setup.py install (at least no errors were reported during the installation). Now I am trying to install pymongo using easy_install but I am not having much success. It seems that easy_install isn't working at all. I execute easy_install as administrator: C:\>easy_install Cannot find Python executable C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe The path C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe is correct. I have found this bug report on bugs.python.org which seems to be related, although its status is 'Resolved'. Do you have any ideas as to what may be wrong? Any pointers, hints or tips for diagnosing the problem further would be greatly appreciated.     I wanna fix a 2D board for a game. I've already fixed other panels for the Gui and everything goes well. But the panel for the board cant be printed on the window. I'm a bit confused about it as i think i've followed the same ideas as for the others panels i need. Here's what i've done: EDIT:*EDIT* what i'm trying to do is fix a board panel for the game according to the dimensions of the it,hold every square in an array in order to use it after wherever it;s needed. I draw each little square of it with the method draw and put it back to the panel. So, each square on the board is a panel. This is the idea. But as u can see. There are troubles/errors on it. EDIT: code updated. just found a part of the problem. i thought first that i had set background to squared, but i didnt. with this one it appears on the panel a wide black "column". Unfortunately,still none squares. :( One More EDIT: Also,i realized that draw method is never called. when i put the draw method in the following method i can see the squares but they remain small. I redefine them with setSize but still no change. How can I use paint method to edit the panels properly???? As it is now it can't.     Hello, I have two issues with my class, basically the quality of the jpeg images is quite poor, but I'm not sure if thats down to my ratio resizing. Ideally I'd like this class to be strict with image sizes and crop into them, but I cant get my head around it.     The Situation I am creating a video training site for a client on the RackSpace Cloud using the traditional LAMP stack (RackSpace's cloud has both Windows and LAMP stacks). The videos and other media files I'm serving on this site need to be protected as my client charges money for access to them. There is no DRM or funny business like that, essentially we store the files outside of the web root and use PHP to authenticate user's before they are able to access the files by using mod_rewrite to run the request through PHP. On local test machines it works like a charm. However once deployed to the cloud it stops working. After some debugging it turns out that if a request to the cloud has certain file extensions like .JPG, .PNG, or .SWF (i.e. extensions of typically static media files.) the request is routed to a cache system called Varnish. The end result of this routing is that by the time this whole process makes it to my PHP script the session is not present. If I change the extension in the URL to .PHP or if I even add a query parameter Varnish is bypassed and the PHP script can get the session. No problem right? I'll just add a meaningless query parameter to my requests! Here is the rub: The media files I am serving through this system are being requested through compiled SWF files that I have zero control over. They are generated by third-party software and I have no hope of adding or changing the URLs that they request. Are there any other options I have on this? Update: I should note that I have verified this behavior with RackSpace support and they have said there is nothing they can do about it.

  • JTabbedPane: only first tab is drawn, the second is always empty (newbie Q)

    I created a very simple JTabbedPane by first creating an empty JTabbedPane object, then 2 JPanels that I later add. Each JPanel is holding a object that extends JButton and implements MouseListener. Each of these holds a different image loaded from a file; the image is held locally as a buffered image and as an image icon, etc., all of which works great. The point of all that is to allow resizing of the image when the button is resized (using getscaledinstance()), because the panel is resized, because the JTabbedPane is resized, etc., within the JFrame that holds everything. I override paintComponent() to accomplish this in the class that extends JButton. I am using MigLayout Manager, and all is well on that front controlling layout constraints, growing, filling, initial sizes, preferred sizes, etc. The images the buttons hold are of different sizes and proportions, but this caused no trouble before. Up until 2 days ago everything worked fairly well. I made some changes trying to tweak some resizing issues as I was picking up MigLayout manager. At the time I was playing around with setting various min, max, and preferred sizes using the methods provided for by the components, not the layout manager. I also fooled a bit with pack(), validate(), visible(), opaque() etc., and yes I read the article about Swing and AWT painting here: http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/painting/ , and I switched to relying more and more on MigLayout. On an unrelated note, it appears JFrame's do not honor maxsize? Somehow, today, with and without using any of these methods provided by swing, with or without using MigLayout manager to handle some of these matters instead, I now have a JTabbedPane that correctly displays the FIRST JPanel I add, but NOT THE SECOND JPanel--which, while present as a tab--does not show when selected. I have switched the order of which panel is added first, and this still holds true regardless of which JPanel I add first, telling me the JPanels are ok, and the problem is most likely in the JTabbedPane. I click on the second tab, the JTabbedPane switches, but I have what appears to be a blank button in the JPanel. A few console system-out statements reveal the following: a) that the second panel and its button are constructed b) no mouse events are being captured when I click on where the second panel and button should reside, as if it didn't exist at that point; c) when I switch to the second tab, the overrided paintComponent() method of the button within that second JPanel is never called, so it is in fact never being painted despite the tab in which it resides becoming visible; d) the JTabbpedPane getComponentCount() returns a correct value of 2 after adding the 2nd panel; e) MigLayout manager actually rocks, but I digress... I cannot now revert to my older code, and despite my best efforts to undo whatever changes caused this, I cannot fix my new problem. I've commented out everything but the most essential calls: constructors for each object--with MigLayout; add() for placing the buttons on the panels using string-arguments appropriate for MigLayout; add() for placing the panels on the JTabbedPane, also with MigLayout string arguments; setting the default op on close for the JFrame; and setting the JFrame visible. This means I do not fiddle with optimization settings, double buffering settings, opaque settings, but leave them as default, and still, no fix; the second panel will not show itself. Each panel, I should add, when it is the first to be loaded, works fine, again re-affirming that the panels and buttons are themselves ok.   • CentOS - Configuring Puppet to play nice with SELinux

    I am running into an issue every time I attempt to start the puppetmasterd service, for which I receive the following error message: root@service1 ~ # -> /etc/init.d/puppetmaster start Starting puppetmaster: Could not prepare for execution: Got 1 failure(s) while initializing: change from absent to directory failed: Could not set 'directory on ensure: Permission denied - /etc/puppet/ssl [FAILED] Apparently there was a known issue with this scenario as outlined in this bug report, however in the bug report it states the issue has been resolved in selinux-policy-3.9.16-29.fc15, but the latest CentOS default upstream version is 3.7.19-155.el6_3.4. So I am trying to figure out the best solution. I can either create a local security policy to allow puppetmasterd the access it needs, or keep researching and install a newer version of selinux-policy outside of the default upstream channel. Anyone have any recommendations?   • XDocument + IEnumerable is causing out of memory exception in System.Xml.Linq.dll

    Basically I have a program which, when it starts loads a list of files (as FileInfo) and for each file in the list it loads a XML document (as XDocument). The program then reads data out of it into a container class (storing as IEnumerables), at which point the XDocument goes out of scope. The program then exports the data from the container class to a database. After the export the container class goes out of scope, however, the garbage collector isn't clearing up the container class which, because its storing as IEnumerable, seems to lead to the XDocument staying in memory (Not sure if this is the reason but the task manager is showing the memory from the XDocument isn't being freed). As the program is looping through multiple files eventually the program is throwing a out of memory exception. To mitigate this ive ended up using System.GC.Collect(); to force the garbage collector to run after the container goes out of scope. this is working but my questions are: Is this the right thing to do? (Forcing the garbage collector to run seems a bit odd) Is there a better way to make sure the XDocument memory is being disposed? Could there be a different reason, other than the IEnumerable, that the document memory isnt being freed? Thanks.   • Typesafe fire-and-forget asynchronous delegate invocation in C#

    I recently found myself needing a typesafe "fire-and-forget" mechanism for running code asynchronously. Ideally, what I would want to do is something like: var myAction = (Action)(() => Console.WriteLine("yada yada")); myAction.FireAndForget(); // async invocation Unfortunately, the obvious choice of calling BeginInvoke() without a corresponding EndInvoke() does not work - it results in a slow resource leak (since the asyn state is held by the runtime and never released ... it's expecting an eventual call to EndInvoke(). I also can't run the code on the .NET thread pool because it may take a very long time to complete (it's advised to only run relatively short-lived code on the thread pool) - this makes it impossible to use the ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(). Initially, I only needed this behavior for methods whose signature matches Action, Action<...>, or Func<...>. So I put together a set of extension methods (see listing below) that let me do this without running into the resource leak. There are overloads for each version of Action/Func. Unfortunately, I now want to port this code to .NET 4 where the number of generic parameters on Action and Func have been increased substantially. Before I write a T4 script to generate these, I was also hoping to find a simpler more elegant way to do this.     i have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to create a two class java calculator but have been unsuccessful so far in getting it working. i have the code for an interface which works and displays ok but creating a seperate class 'CalcEngine' to do the actual calculations has proven to be beyond me. I'd appreciate it if someone could kick start things for me and create a class calcEngine which works with the interface class and allows input when from single button i.e. if one is pressed on the calc then 1 displays onscreen. please note i'm not asking someone to do the whole thing for me as i want to learn and i'm confident i can do the rest including addition subtraction etc. once i get over the obstacle of getting the two classes to communicate. any and all assistance would be very much appreciated.     I can use ffmpeg to make screen casts: ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1280x800 -i :0.0 -c:v libx264 -framerate 30 -r 30 -crf 18 out.mkv However the output comes out to be too fast paced. It also happens with GTK RecordMyDesktop if I enable the encode on the fly. So, the questions is how to get a normal video pace.   • Module Adminhtml blocks not loading

    I was working on a Magento module and it was working fine. At some point, I was trying to enable WYSIWYG in an edit form 'content' field and suddenly, my adminhtml grid and edit blocks stopped being generated. On my system are TinyMCE and Fontis FCKEditor WYSIWYG editors extensions. I'm not sure what I did wrong but my adminhtml blocks will no longer generate.   • OpenVPN (HideMyAss) client on Ubuntu: Route only HTTP traffic

    I want to use HideMyAss VPN (hidemyass.com) on Ubuntu Linux to route only HTTP (ports 80 & 443) traffic to the HideMyAss VPN server, and leave all the other traffic (MySQL, SSH, etc.) alone. I'm running Ubuntu on AWS EC2 instances. The problem is that when I try and run the default HMA script, I suddenly can't SSH into the Ubuntu instance anymore and have to reboot it from the AWS console. I suspect the Ubuntu instance will also have trouble connecting to the RDS MySQL database, but haven't confirmed it.   • How do I get a JComponent to resize after calling `setVisible(true)`?

    Our application displays a 2D view of our data (mainly maps) and then allows the user to change to a 3D view. The 2D and 3D views are generated by custom C++ code that is SWIG'ed into our Swing GUI and wrapped within a JComponent. These JComponents are then displayed within another parent JComponent. Our problem is that when we change from the 2D to the 3D view and then back to the 2D view, when we resize the window the 2D view does not get resized. The resize events don't get sent to the 2D view. Our application runs under Linux (Fedora 11). We're running Java version 1.6.0_12. Here is some sample code in which I've replaced the 2D view and 3D view with two 2 JButtons, that produces the same behaviour. Therefore parent.remove(view2D) and parent.add(view3D) is not really a solution and we have to call setVisible(false) and setVisible(true) on the JComponents that contain our 2D and 3D views in order to hide and show them.   • Reconciling a new BindingList into a master BindingList using LINQ

    I have a seemingly simple problem whereby I wish to reconcile two lists so that an 'old' master list is updated by a 'new' list containing updated elements. Elements are denoted by a key property. These are my requirements: All elements in either list that have the same key results in an assignment of that element from the 'new' list over the original element in the 'old' list only if any properties have changed. Any elements in the 'new' list that have keys not in the 'old' list will be added to the 'old' list. Any elements in the 'old' list that have keys not in the 'new' list will be removed from the 'old' list. I found an equivalent problem here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/161432/ - but it hasn't really been answered properly. So, I came up with an algorithm to iterate through the old and new lists and perform the reconciliation as per the above. Before anyone asks why I'm not just replacing the old list object with the new list object in its entirety, it's for presentation purposes - this is a BindingList bound to a grid on a GUI and I need to prevent refresh artifacts such as blinking, scrollbars moving, etc. So the list object must remain the same, only its updated elements changed. Another thing to note is that the objects in the 'new' list, even if the key is the same and all the properties are the same, are completely different instances to the equivalent objects in the 'old' list, so copying references is not an option. Below is what I've come up with so far - it's a generic extension method for a BindingList.   • What's the best-practice way to update an Adapter's underlying data?

    I'm running into an IllegalStateException updating an underlying List to an Adapter (might be an ArrayAdapter or an extension of BaseAdapter, I don't remember). I do not have or remember the text of the exception at the moment, but it says something to the effect of the List's content changing without the Adapter having been notified of the change. This List /may/ be updated from another thread other than the UI thread (main). After I update this list (adding an item), I call notifyDataSetChanged. The issue seems to be that the Adapter, or ListView attached to the Adapter attempts to update itself before this method is invoked. When this happens, the IllegalStateException is thrown. If I set the ListView's visibility to GONE before the update, then VISIBLE again, no error occurs. But this isn't always practical. I read somewhere that you cannot modify the underlying this from another thread--this would seem to limit an MVC pattern, as with this particular List, I want to add items from different threads. I assumed that as long as I called notifyDataSetChanged() I'd be safe--that the Adapter didn't revisit the underlying List until this method was invoked but this doesn't seem to be the case. I suppose what I'm asking is, can it be safe to update the underlying List from threads other than the UI? Additionally, if I want to modify the data within an Adapter, do I modify the underlying List or the Adapter itself (via its add(), etc. methods). Modifying the data through the Adapter seems wrong. I came across a thread on another site from someone who seems to be having a similar problem to mine: http://osdir.com/ml/Android-Developers/2010-04/msg01199.html (this is from where I grabbed the Visibility.GONE and .VISIBLE idea). To give you a better idea of my particular problem, I'll describe a bit of how my List, Adapter, etc. are set up. I've an object named Queue that contains a LinkedList. Queue extends Observable, and when things are added to its internal list through its methods, I call setChanged() and notifyListeners(). This Queue object can have items added or removed from any number of threads. I have a single "queue view" Activity that contains an Adapter. This Activity, in its onCreate() method, registers an Observer listener to my Queue object. In the Observer's update() method I call notifyDataSetChanged() on the Adapter. I added a lot of log output and determined that when this IllegalStateExcption occurs that my Observer callback was never invoked. So it's as if the Adapter noticed the List's change before the Observer had a chance to notify its Observers, and call my method to notify the Adapter that the contents had changed. So I suppose what I'm asking is, is this a good way to rig-up an Adapter? Is this a problem because I'm updating the Adapter's contents from a thread other than the UI thread? If this is the case, I may have a solution in mind (give the Queue object a Handler to the UI thread when it's created, and make all List modifications using that Handler, but this seems improper). I realize that this is a very open-ended post, but I'm a bit lost on this and would appreciate any comments on what I've written.
