• Roger Jennings’ Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform

  Writing and publishing a book about a technology early in its infancy is cruel.  Your subjected to many product changes and your book might be outdated the day it reaches the book stores.  I bought Roger Jennings “Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform” book knowing that it was published in October 2009 and that many changes occurred to the Azure platform in 2009. Right off the bat and from a technology point of view, some chapters are now outdated but don’t reject this book because of that.  In the first few chapters, Jennings does a great job at explaining Cloud Computing and the Azure platform from a business point of view, something that few Azure articles and blogs fail to do right now.  You may want to wait for the second edition and read Jennings’ outstanding Azure focused blog in the meantime.   var addthis_pub="guybarrette";

• nginx stop/reload on windows failed for Access is denied

  I am running nginx on Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) as a windows service. I am using Windows Service Wrapper for that. (Actually, I have followed this tutorial: http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/HgServeNginxWindows.) The service is running ok. However, the server does not process the signals (e.g. stop / reload). This means if I stop the service, nginx is not stopped. (I have to kill it.) And when I want to reload the configuration from command line: C:\Users\Administrator>E:\apath\nginx\nginx.exe -p E:\apath\nginx -c E:\apath\nginx.conf -s reload It outputs: nginx: [error] OpenEvent("Global\ngx_reload_4268") failed (5: Access is denied) I am running the command as administrator and the service is running under NETWORK SERVICE user. Any hints or similar issues?

• GitHub Integration in Windows Azure Web Site

  Microsoft had just announced an update for Windows Azure Web Site (a.k.a. WAWS). There are four major features added in WAWS which are free scaling mode, GitHub integration, custom domain and multi branches. Since I ‘m working in Node.js and I would like to have my code in GitHub and deployed automatically to my Windows Azure Web Site once I sync my code, this feature is a big good news to me.   It’s very simple to establish the GitHub integration in WAWS. First we need a clean WAWS. In its dashboard page click “Set up Git publishing”. Currently WAWS doesn’t support to change the publish setting. So if you have an existing WAWS which published by TFS or local Git then you have to create a new WAWS and set the Git publishing. Then in the deployment page we can see now WAWS supports three Git publishing modes: - Push my local files to Windows Azure: In this mode we will create a new Git repository on local machine and commit, publish our code to Windows Azure through Git command or some GUI. - Deploy from my GitHub project: In this mode we will have a Git repository created on GitHub. Once we publish our code to GitHub Windows Azure will download the code and trigger a new deployment. - Deploy from my CodePlex project: Similar as the previous one but our code would be in CodePlex repository.   Now let’s back to GitHub and create a new publish repository. Currently WAWS GitHub integration only support for public repositories. The private repositories support will be available in several weeks. We can manage our repositories in GitHub website. But as a windows geek I prefer the GUI tool. So I opened the GitHub for Windows, login with my GitHub account and select the “github” category, click the “add” button to create a new repository on GitHub. You can download the GitHub for Windows here. I specified the repository name, description, local repository, do not check the “Keep this code private”. After few seconds it will create a new repository on GitHub and associate it to my local machine in that folder. We can find this new repository in GitHub website. And in GitHub for Windows we can also find the local repository by selecting the “local” category.   Next, we need to associate this repository with our WAWS. Back to windows developer portal, open the “Deploy from my GitHub project” in the deployment page and click the “Authorize Windows Azure” link. It will bring up a new windows on GitHub which let me allow the Windows Azure application can access your repositories. After we clicked “Allow”, windows azure will retrieve all my GitHub public repositories and let me select which one I want to integrate to this WAWS. I selected the one I had just created in GitHub for Windows. So that’s all. We had completed the GitHub integration configuration. Now let’s have a try. In GitHub for Windows, right click on this local repository and click “open in explorer”. Then I added a simple HTML file. 1: <html> 2: <head> 3: </head> 4: <body> 5: <h1> 6: I came from GitHub, WOW! 7: </h1> 8: </body> 9: </html> Save it and back to GitHub for Windows, commit this change and publish. This will upload our changes to GitHub, and Windows Azure will detect this update and trigger a new deployment. If we went back to azure developer portal we can find the new deployment. And our commit message will be shown as the deployment description as well.   Azure Storage Explorer –  an another way to Deploy the services on Cloud Azure Storage Explorer is a useful GUI tool for inspecting and altering the data in your Azure cloud storage projects including the logs of your cloud-hosted applications. All three types of cloud storage can be viewed: blobs, queues, and tables. You can also create or delete blob/queue/table containers and items. Text blobs can be edited and all data types can be imported/exported between the cloud and local files. Table records can be imported/exported between the cloud and spreadsheet CSV files. • Can't rdp into new ( or old ) Azure VM

  I have an Azure account with a VM on it. I haven't used it in about 8 months. I tried to connect today but it wont take my creds. Now I'm not entirely sure that I have my password correct, pretty sure but not entirely. So I created a new VM and set the password. Clicked the Connect button on the portal window, tried to connect and was rejected using the password I know to be correct. I have disabled my local machine firewall and antivirus.

• Azure cloud app subdomain pointing to actual domain

  Say we have a domain xyz.com registered with some registrar ... we pointed that domain to the name server of our dedicated server where the DNS will be hosted for that domain. Now, we just want that dedicated server to host the emails coming and the domain will point to abc.cloudapp.net (azure cloud app, they don't provide any static IP ... and only public url is given) Now, someone please helping me in editing/creating the DNS file on our dedicated server to make sure things work properly... if possible past here minimum settings we need in DNS file to make sure mails are on dedicated server and app is on cloud... • Debugging Visual Studio 2010 Unit Test and WCF Service in one IDE instance

  I have created a WCF service in Visual Studio 2010 along with some supporting assemblies. I have also created a test project which contains multiple unit tests for the service and the supporting assemblies. Right now I have them all in one solution with the Test project having a service reference (http) to the WCF service. If I debug the WCF service and select "Run checked tests" in a Test List I created, I can debug the WCF service without a problem. Note: I cannot select Debug Checked Tests while debugging the WCF service. (Because the IDE is already debugging?) If I open the Test project in another instance of VS 2010, debug the WCF service and then select "Debug Checked Tests" - I can debug both my tests and the WCF service. However - I would like to (and my question is) be able to debug my tests and my service in a single IDE. Is this possible?

• Azure VM with many IPs or SSL certificates

  I am looking to move our hosting environment to Azure and by doing so have created a sandpit VM to figure things out. We host around 300-400 websites in IIS and about 2% of these sites have unique, non wildcard certificates all requiring a unique public IP in our current setup. Can you get a range of IPs pointing to 1 VM/Endpoint? Or is it possible to create an SSL proxy? I've never created an SSL proxy but like the idea of it. I'd need advise here on how to proceed if this is the best option. Sorry if this has been answered! Sorry also if my question isn't worded eloquently.

I am not using MVC but lately learned that Azure only supports ASP.NET MVC applications. I want to know whether ASP.NET Web Forms application work on Azure/AppHarbor or not. Do I need to convert this application to MVC if Web Forms is not supported? Will the same application run on Intranet as well?

• Access 2007: How can I make this EXPRESSION less complex?

  Access is telling me that my new expression is to complex. It used to work when we had 10 service levels, but now we have 19! Great! My expression is checking the COST of our services in the [PriceCharged] field and then assigning the appropriate HOURS [Servicelevel] when I perform a calculation to work out how much REVENUE each colleague has made when working for a client. The [EstimatedTime] field stores the actual hours each colleague has worked. [EstimatedTime]/[ServiceLevel]*[PriceCharged] Great. Below is the breakdown of my COST to HOURS expression. • VPN issue: SSTP Service service started and then stopped

  When I was trying to set up a VPN connect on my laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, I got this error: Network Connections Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager service. Error 711: The operation could not finish because it could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service in time. Please try the operation again. I traced through some service dependencies and discovered that Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service was set to Manual. However, when I try to manually start the service, I get: Services The Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Setting all the services involved to Automatic did not help. SSTP just showed Automatic and Stopped in the Services panel. I found a solution that involved booting in Safe Mode and deleting the contents of C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup. This solution worked, and I could set up a vpn connection, but only until I rebooted again. TL;DR I'm looking for a way to permanently enable Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service and other vpn-related services permanently so I don't have to reboot into safe mode and delete files every time I need to connect to a vpn.

• Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 1.2 (June 2010)

  I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET 3.5 or .NET 4 frameworks. Another area of interest that I’ll be digging into is the cloud storage explorer. It provides a read-only view of your Windows Azure tables and blob containers from within Visual Studio via the Server Explorer. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the Windows Azure Tools as I dig deeper… Have a day. :-|

  I've build a custom WebControl, which has the following structure: <gws:ModalBox ID="ModalBox1" HeaderText="Title" runat="server"> <Contents>(controls...)</Contents> <Footer>(controls...)</Footer> </gws:ModalBox> The control contains two ControlCollection properties, 'Contents' and 'Footer'. Never tried to build a control with multiple control collections, but solved it like this (simplified): [PersistChildren(false), ParseChildren(true)] public class ModalBox : WebControl { private ControlCollection _contents; private ControlCollection _footer; public ModalBox() : base() { this._contents = base.CreateControlCollection(); this._footer = base.CreateControlCollection(); } [PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty)] public ControlCollection Contents { get { return this._contents; } } [PersistenceMode(PersistenceMode.InnerProperty)] public ControlCollection Footer { get { return this._footer; } } protected override void RenderContents(HtmlTextWriter output) { // Render content controls. foreach (Control control in this.Contents) { control.RenderControl(output); } // Render footer controls. foreach (Control control in this.Footer) { control.RenderControl(output); } } } However it seems to render properly, it doesn't work anymore if I add some asp.net labels and input controls inside the property. I'll get the HttpException: Unable to find control with id 'KeywordTextBox' that is associated with the Label 'KeywordLabel'. Somewhat understandable, because the label appears before the textbox in the controlcollection. However, with default asp.net controls it does work, so why doesn't this work? What am I doing wrong? Is it even possible to have two control collections in one control? Should I render it differently? Thanks for replies.

• High availability for Windows Service under Windows Server 2003

  Hi. I have a following situation: I need to deploy a windows service that listens for incoming request on tcp port (basically WCF service). I have a High Availability requirement - the service must be deployed on two servers and if the service stops (only the service, not the whole server) on one server, all the requests must be redirected to the second one. For me it looks like a basic failover scenario. How can I achieve this on Windows Server 2003? Should I use Microsoft Cluster Service or Network Load Balancing? The important part is that the process of swapping the servers should not concern the clients (the client must see only single address / single host or domain name). Thanks in advance for help.

• Windows service running under network credentials doesn't autostart

  I have a Subversion Server running as a resident service on a Windows XP Pro machine. That service needs to access a secure network fileshare, so I used the Services-Properties-Log On tab to tell the service to run as a user who has access to the target fileshare. That works out fine until the machine restarts, when the service fails to autostart. I am able to start it manually by logging in, going back to that Services-Properties-Log On tab and reconfiming the explicit credentials. Do I have to manually start this service under alternate credentials every time the machine reboots? Is there something else I can do to make sure that my Subversion server service autostarts with proper access to authenticate against this network share?

• Windows Azure openSUSE: rcnetwork not starting

  I have a Linux VM in Azure, created from their default image. My problem is simply that the init script network doesn't look like to start, so dependent services (apache, postfix...) won't start. If I run yast runlevel and try to start postfix it asks me to start network first: if I accept, network is started without errors and then postfix is started. While network is configured to start on boot, it just doesn't appear to have started. Anyway, SSH connections work fine. Currently, I had to edit my init scripts and remove network from the Required-Start list, but that didn't work for posftix (even after running systemctl --system daemon-reload). How can I fix all this?
