  • radeon display driver clones monitors while using Xinerama

    I'm trying to get my two Radeon HD 4770 cards working with three monitors. Xinerama works so far in the way that I have two fully working monitors were I can move windows from one to the other. My problem now is that my third monitor is a clone of my second monitor (displaying the exact same thing). These monitors are connected to the same graphic card ("Screen Middle" and "Screen Right" in the xorg.conf below).   • How do I fix broken installation?

    Let me start off by saying I'm dual booting 11.04 and Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T61p. The problem may have arisen when I hit the power button during normal startup. I'm fully aware how stupid this is. I don't know why I did it. I did it. Now, I can't get in to Ubuntu. Windows works fine. But when I try to start Ubuntu normally, it seems to run some checks, and does not start up. Sometimes, I see a black screen, and it tells me that it's running certain checks, and then, [ok]. Like... Battery Check Somethingorother [ok] It'll give me 1-5 of these. And then it just does nothing, and I have to turn it off. When I try to start in safe mode... I tried low graphics mode, and after going through a couple of dialogue boxes, I'm brought right back to the safe mode dialogue box. And if I hit 'resume,' a shell pushes up (still that grey on black "your computer is broken" type shell) and asks me to log in. I do, and try to run unity. It tells me something along the lines of: WARNING no DISPLAY variable set and then sets it to " :0" , which doesn't work. And then I can't do anything, really, and I have to restart. (I don't know how to do this from the command line, so I just hard reset. That command would be helpful). Does anybody have any idea how I can get Ubuntu working right again? FTP is less pleasant in Explorer than it is in Nautilus or w/e it is now.

  • EAV - is it really bad in all scenarios?

    I'm thinking to use EAV for some of the stuff in one of the projects, but all questions about it in stackoverflow end up to answers calling EAV an anti pattern. But I'm wondering, if is it that wrong in all cases? Let's say shop product entity, it has common features, like name, description, image, price, etc., that take part in logic many places and has (semi)unique features, like watch and beach ball would be described by completely different aspects. So I think EAV would fit for storing those (semi)unique features? All this is assuming, that for showing product list, it is enough info in product table (that means no EAV is involved) and just when showing one product/comparing up to 5 products/etc. data saved using EAV is used. I've seen such approach in Magento commerce and it is quite popular, so may be there are cases, when EAV is reasonable?

  • Should I change the name in the WTFPL?

    I'm using the WTFPL in my personal projects published on GitHub. Currently I'm using it verbatim, but I have the suspicion I shouldn't be leaving Copyright (C) 2004 Sam Hocevar <[email protected]> in there, and instead should use my name. But the license is very confusing about this. Half of the WTFPL is about the WTFPL itself, so I thought that copyright might refer to a copyright on the license text itself, and not on the project this is licensing. Also, it says Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim or modified copies of this license document, and changing it is allowed as long as the name is changed. So would I have to change the name, from WTFPL to, say, "WTFPL-Domenic"?

    I have someone i'm making a website for with a domain name and current website hosted at fasthosts. I've built them a website hosted at a different host, unlimitedwebhosting. The website i've made them is in a directory like this. www.mysite.com/dev/0002 So fasthosts: Is the registrar for the domain name, it also has all of the email addresses and their current site. unlimitedwebhosting: Has the new site in a sub directory, like .com/dev/0002 Is it possible to keep the domain name and email addresses all hosted at fasthosts and to have the new website hosted in my unlimitedwebhosting account and to somehow have the domain point to the new website?

  • Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

    The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons.   • XNA: Retrieve texture file name during runtime

    I'm trying to retrieve the names of the texture files (or their locations) on a mesh. I realize that the texture file name information is not preserved when the model is loaded. I've been doing tons of searching and some experimenting but I've been met with no luck. I've gathered that I need to extended the content pipeline and store the file location in somewhere like ModelMeshPart.Tag. My problem is, even when I'm trying to make my own custom processor, I still can't figure out where the texture file name is. :( Any thoughts? Thanks! UPDATE: Okay, so I found something kind of promising. NodeContent.Identity.SourceFilename, only that returns the location of my .X model. When I go down the node tree he is always null. Then there's the ContentItem.Name property. It seems to have names of my mesh, but not my actual texture file names. :(

  • xubutnu Nvidia Settings not remembered

    I have an Nvidia card and I'm using NVIDIA Driver Version: 304.51 and the NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI. Everything works fine but when I reboot and login again both my two screens are set to +0 +0 so they mirror each other... I change the settings to screen 2 (NEC LED) to be left of screen 1 (DELL) click Apply and Save to X Configuration File... It all works but when I login again the settings are not remembered...   • Automatic switching between monitor configurations

    I have a laptop and an external monitor and i was wondering if there was a simple approach to switching between multiple monitor configurations based on the detected available displays. For example: When i am at home and i plug in my external monitor i would like this to automatically become enabled and the laptop screen to become disabled. As soon as i pull out the display cable for the external monitor, i would like the laptop screen to automatically become enabled. I was expecting this to just "work" just like it does in windows - but it seems to be much harder than that. I am aware of the xrandr command to turn displays on and off but i cannot seem to find a way to get this to work the way i describe above. I had also found this post about switching between multiple monitor configurations and the results seem a bit inconclusive. However i was hoping that with xrandr there would be a simpler solution. For me, the fact that when i pull out my external monitor the screen just goes black and i get an error message is a big issue holding me back from making the complete switch to linux as i move around alot as a student. My OS of choice is currently Kubuntu 12.04 but i am willing to change to something else if it provides a better way of setting up the described setup.

  • Recommended display/background brightness ratio and UI color schemes [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: Colour scheme for editor - guidelines or medical reccomendations 3 answers I'm a professional programmer, which means I spend a lot of time staring at various displays. Recently I've been having some problems with my eyes, so I went to talk to several doctors, which all gave me different recommendations as to how bright the background of the room should be in comparison to the display's brightness. It was very confusing, as some of them even agreed with counter-arguments of others, which made it all even less clear. So I'd like to ask the professional programmers, as people who actually have some experience with that. Some of the doctors said that looking at a monitor is like looking at a book, so the brightness ratios should be approximately the same. Others said that background should be as bright as the display itself, because then there is no brightness difference at the edges, and that's what may cause eye fatigue. From my own experience, I can say that reading a book isn't the same as writing or debugging a program, where you have to pay close attention to each symbol, and in books most words are easily recognizable without focusing too hard on them. Also, books are black on white and I myself use the default (dark text, white bg) color scheme for my IDE, but I've seen some programmers use mid-bright text on very dark background color schemes. So I'd like to ask what are the recommended display/background brightness ratios for programming? I'm not sure this site is the right one for this kind of questions, so if you know a better one, please comment.

One example to make you see my problem a bit better: We have a set of classes that have to do with the way a company is organized (we can create organizational charts with it). Currently the namespace is CFW.CoreSystem.Organizational. Is this a good name? What is linguistically the best way to name a namespace?     We are doing a big redesign work on our website, and at least 50% of the website folders will be moved to new places with different names (i.e. many URL will be changed). Sure, Google will need some time to index new pages and we expect our SERP positions will be not so good as they are now for some time. We also have an old idea to remove www from our domain name. It seems, it's the right time to do these two works together with publishing the website with updated contents. Or is it better from SEO perspective first publish the new contents, and only after some time, when our SERP positions will return to prior results, tell Google that the domain name without www is our preferred domain name?

    I have a desktop PC which I built a while back. It has an Athlon XP 2500+, 2.5GB RAM, and an Nvidia (PNY Verto) Geforce 6200. I removed the CD drive to add another hard drive so I install from a USB flash drive. When I try to install 12.04 it seems to work just fine. The GUI boots up and wifi even connects to my router. I go through the language screen, the partition screen, the keyboard screen, the location screen, and the import my Windows settings screen just fine. But as soon as I'm done with all that the next screen goes black and displays this message: drm:[drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC6] Since the GUI starts just fine earlier during the install, I know I shouldn't be having any display problems, but I am. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly? I have four IDE hard drives, all Western Digital: a 250GB, a 160GB, a 40GB occupied by Windows XP, and a 120GB that I'm trying to use for Ubuntu. 3GB of the 120GB drive are formatted for swap.     Over the years, I've tried to avoid instanceof whenever possible. Using polymorphism or the visitor pattern where applicable. I suppose it simply eases maintenance in some situations... Are there any other drawbacks that one should be aware of? I do however see it here and there in the Java libraries so I suppose it has its place? Under what circumstances is it preferable? Is it ever unavoidable?

  • Bad Spot to Be In: Playing Catch-up with Mobile Advertising

    You probably noticed, there’s a mass migration going on from online desktop/laptop usage to smartphone/tablet usage.  It’s an indicator of how we live our lives in the modern world: always on the go, with no intention of being disconnected while out there. Consequently, paid as it relates to mobile advertising is taking the social spotlight. eMarketer estimated that in 2013, US adults would spend about 2 hours, 21 minutes a day on mobile, not counting talking time. More people in the world own smartphones than own toothbrushes (bad news I suppose if you’re marketing toothpaste). They’re using those mobile devices to access social networks, consuming at least 17% of their mobile time on them. Frankly, you don’t need a deep dive into mobile usage stats to know what’s going on. Just look around you in any store, venue or coffee shop. It’s really obvious…our mobile devices are now where we “are,” so that’s where marketers can increasingly reach us. And it’s a smart place for them to do just that. Mobile devices can be viewed more and more as shopping facilitators. Usually when someone is on mobile, they are not in passive research mode. They are likely standing near a store or in front of a product, using their mobile to seek reassurance that buying that product is the right move. They are the hottest of hot prospects. Consider that 4 out of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop, 52% of Americans use mobile devices for in-store for research, 70% of mobile searches lead to online action inside of an hour, and people that find you on mobile convert at almost 3x the rate as those that find you on desktop or laptop. But what are marketers doing? Enter statistics from Mary Meeker’s latest State of the Internet report. Common sense says you buy advertising where people are spending their eyeball time, right? But while mobile is 20% of media use and rising, the ad spend there is 4%. Conversely, while print usage is at 5% and falling, ad spend there is 19%. We all love nostalgia, but come on. There are reasons marketing dollar migration to mobile has not matched user migration, including the availability of mobile ad products and the ability to measure user response to mobile ads. But interesting things are happening now. First came Facebook’s mobile ad, which let app developers pay to get potential downloads. Then their mobile ad network was announced at F8, allowing marketers to target users across non-Facebook apps while leveraging the wealth of diverse data Facebook has on those users, a big deal since Nielsen has pointed out mobile apps make up 89% of the media time spent on mobile. Twitter has a similar play in motion with their MoPub acquisition. And now mobile deeplinks have arrived, which can take users straight to sub-pages of mobile apps for a faster, more direct shopper/researcher user experience. The sooner the gratification, the smoother and faster the conversion. To be clear, growth in mobile ad spending is well underway. After posting $13.1 billion in 2013, Gartner expects global mobile ad spending to reach $18 billion this year, then go to $41.9 billion by 2017. Cheap smartphones and data plans are spreading worldwide, further fueling the shift to mobile. Mobile usage in India alone should grow 400% by 2018. And, of course, there’s the famous statistic that mobile should overtake desktop Internet usage this year. How can we as marketers mess up this opportunity? Two ways. We could position ourselves in perpetual “catch-up” mode and keep spending ad dollars where the public used to be. And we could annoy mobile users with horrid old-school marketing practices. Two-thirds of users told Forrester they think interruptive in-app ads are more annoying than TV ads. Make sure your brand’s social marketing technology platform is delivering a crystal clear picture of your social connections so the mobile touch point is highly relevant, mobile optimized, and delivering real value and satisfying experiences.     My laptop connects to 46" Sony Bravia LED TV using HDMI cable in Windows without any problem. However, it just doesn't work with Ubuntu 12.04. It always says No Signal. Problem somewhat persists after upgrading to 13.04. Bravia detects my laptop as a connection now but I am unable to display anything. What drivers/applications should I install to connect via HDMI?
