• What's the best project management software for internal dev. 5 man shop

  I work for a large corporation, but we do small intranet web application development. Our project management tracking sucks. Its custom software built by a jr. intern. For what its worth, our development style is akin to agile, but there's nothing set in stone...very customer oriented approach. I need project tracking that meets the criteria: Intranet, internal products. Mostly maintenance, some new development. 5 developers 12 products 1 hands-off manager. He really just wants to know estimated man hours, due date for dev, QA and release. Along with a short description of the project. Free or super cheap. Bonus Simple pretty UI. Think pretty charts. Hope I covered everything. Please ask for any clarification. If you read dreaming in code, the company uses some project tracking software that sounds pretty sweet. Note, we do have Team Foundation Server. I already tried pushing its use as PM tracking, but its too complicated. I can't get people to sit and train. So this software has to be easy.

• How do I break down and plan a personal programming project?

  I've just started a programming job where I'm applying my 'How to code' knowledge to what I'm being taught of 'How to Program' (They are different!). As part of this, I've been taught how to capture requirements from clients before starting a new project. But... How do I do this for a nebulous personal project? I say nebulous, as I often find halfway through programming something, I want to expand what my program will do, or alter the result. Eventually, I'm tangled in code and have to restart. This can be frustrating and off-putting. Conversely, when given a fixed task and fixed requirements, it's much easier to dig in and get it done. At work I might be told "Today/This week you need to add XYZ to program 1" That is easy to do. At home (for fun) I want to make, say, a program that creates arbitrary lists. It's a very generic task. How do I start with that? I don't need it to do anything, but I want it to do something. So how do I plan a personal programming project? However, I have several databases on each server, and I want to see them all under the database connection (like most the database tools let you). Can I do it in eclipse?

• Sql Server 2005 database lost, How to recover all records. MDF/LDF size is same as it should be

  Few months back, I installed a sql server 2005 on one of my client machine. I gave him a backup option to take backup timely but he never took any backup. Today he called me that "i m not able to see any record of mine." I visited at my clients system and saw that none of the record was present on the tables. There was not even a single row in any of the tables. Then I checked if he has any backup file which i found to be absent. I asked him the reason what could be the possible cause. He said it might be due to virus. After this I checked the size of mdf and ldf file and found it should be what it is. when i created his server mdf ldf file had 2MB of database now it is 83 MB and 193Mb mdf/ldf respectively. This shows the data is still present in it but it is not being displayed. What could be the possible cause and how can i restore all data back to my tables ?

• Is there any reason not to go directly from client-side Javascript to a database?

  So, let's say I'm going to build a Stack Exchange clone and I decide to use something like CouchDB as my backend store. If I use their built-in authentication and database-level authorization, is there any reason not to allow the client-side Javascript to write directly to the publicly available CouchDB server? Since this is basically a CRUD application and the business logic consists of "Only the author can edit their post" I don't see much of a need to have a layer between the client-side stuff and the database. I would simply use validation on the CouchDB side to make sure someone isn't putting in garbage data and make sure that permissions are set properly so that users can only read their own _user data. The rendering would be done client-side by something like AngularJS. In essence you could just have a CouchDB server and a bunch of "static" pages and you're good to go. You wouldn't need any kind of server-side processing, just something that could serve up the HTML pages. Opening my database up to the world seems wrong, but in this scenario I can't think of why as long as permissions are set properly. It goes against my instinct as a web developer, but I can't think of a good reason. So, why is this a bad idea? I feel like I should add a few generic assumptions instead of calling out CouchDB and AngularJS specifically. So let's assume that: The database can authenticate users directly from its hidden store All database communication would happen over SSL Data validation can (but maybe shouldn't?) be handled by the database The only authorization we care about other than admin functions is someone only being allowed to edit their own post We're perfectly fine with everyone being able to read all data (EXCEPT user records which may contain password hashes) Administrative functions would be restricted by database authorization No one can add themselves to an administrator role The database is relatively easy to scale There is little to no true business logic; this is a basic CRUD app

• What advantages do we have when creating a separate mapping table for two relational tables

  In various open source CMS, I have noticed that there is a separate table for mapping two relational tables. Like for categories and products, there is a separate product_category_mapping table. This table just has a primary key and two foreign keys from the categories and product tables. My question is what are the benefits of this database design rather than just linking the tables directly by defining a foreign key in either table? Is it just matter of convenience?

We could go the traditional way and keep a translations table (and a language table and an object_translation linking table) OR we thought it might be better to just have a Description column that contains JSON like the following: { "EN": "This is the translation in English", "EE" : "See on kirjeldus eesti keeles" } Are there any serious downsides as to why we shouldn't use this? I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, J2EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Kill all the project files!

  Like many folks I’m a keen podcast listener and yesterday my commute was filled by listening to Scott Hunter being interviewed on .Net Rocks about the next version of ASP.Net. One thing Scott said really struck a chord with me. I don’t remember the full quote but he was talking about how the ASP.Net project file (i.e. the .csproj file) is going away. The rationale being that the main purpose of that file is to list all the other files in the project, and that’s something that the file system is pretty good at. In Scott’s own words (that someone helpfully put in the comments): A file that lists files is really redundant when the OS already does this Romeliz Valenciano correctly pointed out on Twitter that there will still be a project.json file however no longer will there be a need to keep a list of files in a project file. I suspect project.json will simply contain a list of exclusions where necessary rather than the current approach where the project file is a list of inclusions. On the face of it this seems like a pretty good idea. I’ve long been a fan of convention over configuration and this is a great example of that. Instead of listing all the files in a separate file, just treat all the files in the directory as being part of the project. Ostensibly the approach is if its in the directory, its part of the project. Simple. Now I’m not an ASP.net developer, far from it, but it did occur to me that the same approach could be applied to the two Visual Studio project types that I am most familiar with, SSIS & SSDT. Like many people I’ve long been irritated by SSIS projects that display a faux file system inside Solution Explorer. As you can see in the screenshot below the project has Miscellaneous and Connection Managers folders but no such folders exist on the file system: This may seem like a minor thing but it means useful Solution Explorer features like Show All Files and Open Folder in Windows Explorer don’t work and quite frankly it makes me feel like a second class citizen in the Microsoft ecosystem. I’m a developer, treat me like one. Don’t try and hide the detail of how a project works under the covers, show it to me. I’m a big boy, I can handle it! Would it not be preferable to simply treat all the .dtsx files in a directory as being part of a project? I think it would, that’s pretty much all the .dtproj file does anyway (that, and present things in a non-alphabetic order – something else that wildly irritates me), so why not just get rid of the .dtproj file? In the case of SSDT the .sqlproj actually does a whole lot more than simply list files because it also states the BuildAction of each file (Build, NotInBuild, Post-Deployment, etc…) but I see no reason why the convention over configuration approach can’t help us there either. Want to know which is the Post-deployment script? Well, its the one called Post-DeploymentScript.sql! Simple! So that’s my new crusade. Let’s kill all the project files (well, the .dtproj & .sqlproj ones anyway). Are you with me? @Jamiet

• How to structure a project that supports multiple versions of a service?

  I'm hoping for some tips on creating a project (ASP.NET MVC, but I guess it doesn't really matter) against multiples versions of a service (in this case, actually multiple sets of WCF services). Right now, the web app uses only some of the services, but the eventual goal would be to use the features of all of the services. The code used to implement a service feature would likely be very similar between versions in most cases (but, of course, everything varies). So, how would you structure a project like this? Separate source control branches for each different version? Kind of shying away from this because I don't feel like branch merging should be something that we're going to be doing really often. Different project/solution files in the same branch? Could link the same shared projects easily Build some type of abstraction layer on top of the services, so that no matter what service is being used, it is the same to the web application?

• De-facto standards for customer information record

  I'm currently evaluating a potential new project that involves creating a DB for typical customer information (userid, pwd, first & last name, email, adress, telfnr ...). At this point, requirements are only roughly defined. The customer DB is expected in the O(millions) of records. In order to calculate some back-of-the-envelope numbers for DB sizing and evaluate potential DB options & architectures, I'm looking for some de-facto standards for these kind of records. In particular, the std size of every field (first name, last name, address,...) or typical avg for a simple customer record would be great info. With so many e-commerce websites out there, there should be some kind of typical config that can be reused and avoid re-inventing the wheel. Any ideas?

In the spirit of the pseudo code below: Preferred this way: sqlite --targetDatabase ChromeHistoryAll --importFiles /path/to/ChromeAppData/History\ Index* --importOnlyYetUnknownFiles Or if my desired feature --importOnlyYetUnknownFiles is not possible (feature could also be called "avoid duplicate imports by checking UIDs"), then by explicitly only importing files, of which I know, that they have yet not been imported into the ChromeHistoryAll database: cd ChromeAppData; sqlite --databaseTarget ChromeHistoryAll --importFiles YetNotImported1 YetNotImported2 YetNotImported3 All my queries I would then perform in the database "ChromeHistoryAll" P.S.: Additional question of general interest: Is there a way to perform a database query in a temporary database which was created on-the-fly from multiple files? Like: sqlite --query="SQL query" --targetDatabase DbAll --DBtemporaryInRAM --importFiles db1 db2 db3 This is surely not applicable for my Chrome question, as these History Index files have a combined file size of 500MB together, thus such a query would be of bad performance. But it could come handy in other situations.

• Synchronization between Client database and Central Database

  Hello, I am trying to develop UI in C# .NET to synchronize 7 instances of backup databases with the central database one by one (All holding same schema) .The backup database( all 7 instances client databases) which is brought to the central server in a removable device such pendrive will consist of mdf and ldf files from each client and will be attached to the server where the central database resides. After all the client backup databases are attached i need to synchronize(update existing data or insert new data to the central database residing in server) each backup database one by one to central database. I want to know as how i can synchronize betweeen a backup database with a central database using C# .NET
