  Hi all, I am trying to make my web app compatible with international languages and I am stuck with trying to convert escaped characters in my Delphi .NET DLL. The front end code is passing the UTF-8 hex notation with an escape character e.g for ? I pass \uE3818A. In my DLL I capture this and constract the following string '$E3828A'. I need to convert this back to ? and send it to my database, I've been trying to use Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes and Encoding.UTF8.GetString but with no luck. Anyone could help me figure this out? • Sending a file from my application (Indy/Delphi) to an ASP page and then onto another server (Amazon

  I have a need to store files on Amazon AWS S3, but in order to isolate the user from the AWS authentication I want to go via an ASP page on my site, which the user will be logged into. So: The application sends the file using the Delphi Indy library TidHTTP.Put (FileStream) routine to the ASP page, along with some authentication stuff (mine, not AWS) on the querystring. The ASP page checks the auth details and then if OK stores the file on S3 using my Amazon account. Problem I have is: how do I access the data coming in from the Indy PUT using JScript in the ASP page and pass it on to S3. I'm OK with AWS signing, etc, it's just the nuts and bolts of connecting the two bits (the incoming request and the outgoing AWS request) ... TIA R

  Hi, I'm automating Word with Delphi, but some times I got an error message: The requested member of the collection does not exist It seems that the Item member of the Styles collection class does not always exist and some times causes the above mentioned error. My workaround is to catch the exception and skip it, but is there anyway to detect it instead of using the try...except block? The problem with the try...except block is that when debugging the raised exception is annoying... • How to Detect Forward and Back Mouse Button Events in Delphi?

  If a mouse has other buttons in addition to the standard left/right/middle (e.g. forward/back), how can we detect those button clicks in Delphi? An example of how this is used is the Internet Explorer, where the forward/back button on the side of a Logitech or MS mouse cycles forward and back between any loaded web pages. This seems to replicate the Backspace/CTRL+Backspace on the keyboard but I tried to detect that using KeyPreview and the KeyPress event but it does not pick it up. Any idea how to detect clicks on these extended mouse buttons?

• Delphi 7: how to execute shell command and check the result?

  I'm using Delphi 7 and can't predict the target version of Windows. I need to create a database (probably MySql, but might be something else) and define some table structures. I do not need to populate any data. Unfortunately, all of the ADO components seem to expect that a database already exists and they will then allow you to manipulate it. So, since it's only a few simple commands, I thought that I might as well use ShellExectute(). Agree? Disagree? Can anyone give me a sample code which will attempt to run "MySql --version" and let me check the result? After that I should be able to figure it out for myself. Thanks.

• "No context-sensitive help installed" , "user32.dll" and "uxtheme.dll" AV errors on Delphi with no reason

  This is very strange guys. I wrote a simple application. When I make my commands executed fast by moving mouse (event is on mouse move), I experience the following errors if I run my application without debugger (if I do, application just hangs and nothing happens): 1- "No context-sensitive help installed" however i haven't used help in my app. 2- Access violation errors from "uxtheme.dll" and "user32.dll" libraries! well, i think these errors happen when Windows Messages are sent quickly one after another. I came across these errors a while ago in a huge application. In both application I used SendMessage command, but what am i doing wrong? I'm now using Delphi 2010 Has anyone ever experienced this?!

• Using Delphi's ShellExecute() with the process inheriting the original console?

  In C I've used the system() function before in a console application and if I start another process using system() it inherits the console window of the process that called it. In Delphi system() doesn't exist so I'm using ShellExecute() to create a new process, but the new process comes up in a new console window. Is there some way that I can make it inherit the handle of the window that's calling it? I've used function GetConsoleWindow(): HWND; stdcall; external 'kernel32.dll'; to get the console window and passed it in the HWND part of ShellExecute(), but that didn't work.

  I am currently using Delphi 7 and unsure whether to upgrade. I see the following means of debugging and wonder if there are others or which FOSS tools a small company can use (we don't do much Windows programming). 1 Debug in the IDE, by setting breakpoints, using watches, etc 2 Debug in the IDE, by using the Event Log I got some good info from this page and tweaked it to add timestamps and indent/outdent on procedure call/return, so that I can see nested calls more quickly. Does anyone know of anything better ? 3 Using a profiler 4 Any others? Such as MadExcept, etc?

So I'd like to ask if there was an assorted list like what's new docs of Python's - clear and concise to the point. Btw, please no screencasts. They seem to be quite abundant lately (probably because of CodeRages) but I find them very unintuitive to learn from. Let's leave that docs in video format thing to RoR community, shall we :).

• How to get dataset to populate data into dbgrid in Delphi 6?

  I have created a DBGrid in Delphi 6 and tied it to a DataSource contained in a DataModule. The Dataset for that source in also located in the same module. In the OnShow event for the form, I activate the dataset and set a label equal to the rowcount for the dataset. This shows several hundred rows but nothing shows in the dbgrid. If I activate the dataset in the IDE, the grid populates with the expected data. Does anyone have any idea why this behaviour would change between the IDE and normal runtime? We are also using SDAC connection components. All 3rd party component choices are not mine to change. I can elaborate as necessary for clarification, but I mainly need troubleshooting ideas to start at.

  Hi, so far if I had to associate the file extension with my application I used to simply modify the registry. However I haven't been doing it for years, and I'm afraid the things might have changed a bit. I have no idea how to prevent registry access restrictions in Windows 7 / Vista (if there are any for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT). Thus I'm looking for some delphi library, unit, code snippet or whatever which works reliably under XP, Vista and 7. Is there any which handles "backup" as well? By backup I mean possibility to revert the changes to the previous association ... Thanks in advance, m.

  Hi there: I am developing an application (Delphi 7, windows XP) that uses a connection to a remote SQL Server. Sometimes, that server is down, and I want to do something to start it. I was trying to start SQL Server in a local context, and it was fine, it worked... But the point is that I have to start it up from a remote machine. I can see SQL Server status from a remote server, but I can't start it up... Maybe it gets problems because of user and password, but where to specify the login to the remote machine? • Why doesn't my cursor change to an Hourglass in my FindDialog in Delphi?

  I am simply opening my FindDialog with: FindDialog.Execute; In my FindDialog.OnFind event, I want to change the cursor to an hourglass for searches through large files, which may take a few seconds. So in the OnFind event I do this: Screen.Cursor := crHourglass; (code that searches for the text and displays it) ... Screen.Cursor := crDefault; What happens is while searching for the text, the cursor properly changes to the hourglass (or rotating circle in Vista) and then back to the pointer when the search is completed. However, this only happens on the main form. It does not happen on the FindDialog itself. The default cursor remains on the FindDialog during the search. While the search is happening if I move the cursor over the FindDialog it changes to the default, and if I move it off and over the main form it becomes the hourglass. This does not seem like what is supposed to happen. Am I doing something wrong or does something special need to be done to get the cursor to be the hourglass on all forms? For reference, I'm using Delphi 2009.

  I download the Application Verifier 4.0 to test my App for check if could have problems on Vista/7. I run from Delphi 2010 debugger, and stop in CPU view. • How can I get the Name of the Program associated with a file extension using Delphi?

  I need to get the name of the program currently associated with a file extension for the current user. If you right-click on a file and select properties, then what I need is the program name that is to the right of the "Opens with" line. e.g. For ".xls", I want to be able to get the answer "Microsoft Office Excel", or whatever program the user has as their default program to open .xls files. I have determined it's not as easy as just going into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and picking it out, since it may also be specified in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKEY_USERS. Maybe all I need to know is the pecking order used by Windows to determine this and how to get to each of the locations. Of course, a Windows API call to do this would be ideal. This is a similar question to: How to get icon and description from file extension using Delphi? but that question only answered how to get the description of the extension and the icon of the associated program. I couldn't find a way to extend that to also get the name of the associated program.

• Is there a way to trace through only project source in Delphi?

  I'm using Delphi 2010 and I'm wondering if there's a way to trace through code which is in the project without tracing through calls to included VCLs. For example - you put in a breakpoint and then use Shift+F7 to trace through line-by-line. Now you run into a call to some lengthy procedure in a VCL - in my case it's often a Measurement Studio or other component that draws the doodads for a bunch of I/O, OPC, or other bits. At any rate, what happens is that the debugger hops out of the active source file, opens the component source, and traces through that line by line. Often this is hundreds or thousands of lines of code I don't care about - I just want to have it execute and return to the next source line in MY project. Obviously you can do this by setting breakpoints around every instance of an external call, but often there are too many to make this practical - I'd be spending an hour setting a hundred breakpoints every time I wanted to step through a section of code. Is there a setting or a tool somewhere that can do this? Allow one to trace through code within the project while silently executing code which is external to the project?   I'm currently working on a program to generate the hashes of files, in Delphi 2010. As part of this I have a option to create User Presets, e.g. pre-defined choice of hashing algo's which the user can create/save/delete. I have the create and load code working fine. It uses a ComboBox and loads from a file "fhpre.ini", inside this file is the users presets stored in format of:- PresetName PresetCode (a 12 digit string using 0 for don't hash and 1 for do) On application loading it loads the data from this file into the ComboBox and an Array with the ItemIndex of ComboBox matching the corrisponding correct string of 0's and 1's in the Array. Now I need to implement a feature to have the user delete a preset from the list. • A few problems with Delphi involving Mail Merge, SQL + Databases.

  My first problem is with mail merge. I have created a a Data File and a table, yet I am not able to fill my table with information from my Data File. The << just seems to be inserted after wherever the cursor is on the page, which is not where the table is. All that is entered into the actual table is a '59'. Therefore I think I either need to to change the code or be able to move the cursor. The third problem is that when I add a new column to my database manually (which I need to do) I get a 'violation' error in one of my units when I activate an ADOTable. This only happens on one unit and it happens when I add a column with any name anywhere in the table. I know that is vague but I can't seem to narrow down the problem any further than that.
