    I am looking people's opinion and experience on using chart controls within an ASP.NET application (web forms or MVC) primarily but also in any kind of project. I am currently doing my research and I have a pretty big list of controls to evaluate.   • ASP .NET confusion - server controls

    I have read through the information in this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22084/asp-net-aspxxx-controls-versus-standard-html but am still rather confused. The situation was I was asked to do a web project where I made a wizard. When I was done with the project everyone asked why I had used an <asp:Wizard...>. I thought this was what was being asked for, but apparently not, so after this I was led to believe that server controls were just prototyping tools. However, the next project I did my DB queries through C# code-behind and loaded the results via html. I was then asked why I had not used a gridview and a dataset. Does anyone have a list of pros and cons why they would choose to use specific html controls over specific server controls and why? I guess I'm looking for a list... what server controls are okay to use and why? EDIT: I guess this question is open ended, so I'll clarify a few more specific questions... Is it okay to use very simple controls such as asp:Label or do these just end up wasting space? It seems like it would be difficult to access html in the code behind otherwise. Are there a few controls that should just never be used? Does anyone have a good resource that will show me pros and cons of each control?

  • Working Qt controls in a 3d environment

    I need some advice from a Qt expert. The background: I have a 3D engine (ogre3d) working in concert with Qt. The 3D Content is displayed in a widget (using a custom OS window in the client area). I'm able to overlay arbitrary Qt widgets onto the 3d world using the widget render() method and a shared bitmap. This makes a great "heads up display". I can use the standard Qt style sheets and animation using this technique. My goal I'd like to go a step further and allow the user to move these rendered widgets using the mouse. I'd like some advice on the best way to implement this. Possible solutions: The widgets in the HUD are not part of the inheritance chain. I render them manually. They don't get events though. I could add them to the inheritance chain so they get events in the usual way. Then I would need to change them to render to my shared bitmap instead of to the operating system. I looked at this once but couldn't find enough information to implement it. Capture mouse events in the 3D display widget and EMIT them to child controls. I basically create my own event handling chain. Any suggestions on how to implement this? I'm also considering switching to Qt5. I'm not sure how that might affect this decision.

    I want to set a youtube video to 100% width so that it scales appropriately in a dynamic width column on a web page I am designing. The problem is that the height doesn't behave like the height of an image. Instead of scaling proportionately, it either collapses (if set to "auto" or left blank) or it scales seemingly random if set to a percentage. How can I get it to remain proportionate while still dynamic?

    Is it possible to use ASP.NET Dynamic Data with SubSonic 3 in-place of Linq to SQL classes or the Entity Framework? MetaModel.RegisterContext() throws an exception if you use the context class that SubSonic generates. I thought I remembered coming across a SubSonic/Dynamic Data example back before SubSonic 3 was released but I can't find it now. Has anyone been able to get this to work?

  • CommandBinding broken in inner Custom Control when nesting two Custom Controls of the same type.

    I've done a Custom Control in form of a GroupBox but with an extra header which purpose is to hold a button or a stackpanel with buttons at the other side. I've added the a Dependency Property to hold the extra header and I've connected the customized template. Everything works fine until I put one of these controls in another one. Now the wierd stuff begins(at least in my eyes xP), the command binding in the inner control simply isn't set. I tried to use Snoop to gather some data, the see if the inherits is broken and when I clicked on the buttons which isn't doing what I want it to, boom, breakpoint triggered. So in some wierd way the Command isn't set until something that I don't know what it is, happens, which snoops triggers. I've also tried to put the buttons in the regular Header property and that works fine, but not with my own made. I could just switch places with them to make it like I want but now I'm curious to know where the problem lies... Now I wonder, what can I've missed?     Hi all, i would like to know what is the correct way to create a fullscreen view of a tabpage control. This page has other controls, and that controls has various events that are subscribed. I was trying creating a new fullscreen form and copy all controls of the tabs to that form, but with this approach i need to resubscribe every control to the corresponding handler. If i only add the references the subscription remains but when the fullscreen form is close also the referenced copied controls are lost.

  • Allow IExtenderProvider control to attach to controls on a UserControl

    VB.NET 2.0 Framework I developed a control that implements IExtenderProvider in order to attach to controls and display a form for translating of the text of that control. This works great on regular controls on the form but the IExtenderProvider is not attaching to controls on UserControls, which makes sense. Is it possible to modify the UserControls or my IExtenderProvider control to enable it to attach to controls on a UserControl? Thanks!

  • What's the thought behind Children and Controls properties in WPF?

    I don't know if this should go on Programmers, but I thought it was relevant here. Being a skilled WPF programmer myself, I often wonder what people were thinking when they designed WPF in terms of naming conventions. Why would you sometimes have a property called Children for accessing the children of the control, and then sometimes have an equivalent property, just called Controls instead? What were they thinking here? Another example is the Popup control. Instead of a Content property, it has a Child property. Why would you do that? To me that's just confusing. So I'm wondering if there's a logical reason for it, which would probably also help me understand what the properties are called next time I need to do some speed-programming. If there's no reason behind it, then all I can say is WAT.

    Hey all, After the unfortunate realization that Firefox is just not going to play nice with an embedded HTML5 video with my server set up, I've decided to go the JW Player route, since it's compatible with iPads and iPhones. I can get the file to show up on my page, but it's big and heavy. I would like for it to be just the video, no controls. Autoplay and on loop. Can you help me out?
