  • Specifying an additional Applications directory on Mac OS X

    Is there any way I can specify an additional Applications directory. I basically want to keep the applications that come with Mac OS X in the default Applications directory, but, install all third-party software to a different directory which is in a separate partition. I want to retain all advantages of the actual Applications directory such as the one where copying files from a .dmg to the Applications folder installs software.

    Will Linux / UNIX / OS X binaries be stored in the same directories across different platform or distributions? I'm asking because I need to have access to uuidgen (stored in /usr/bin/uuidgen on my development computer) and noticed that my local Apache server does not include /usr/bin in the PATH. I know I could add /usr/bin to the path, but I want to make sure the software can be re-deployed on a number of different systems with ease. Thanks!

    Hi there. In OS X 10.6, Finder usually looks something like this: The Finder window looks like that when you double-click on most folders or drives. However, whenever I mount a Truecrypt Volume and double-click that, it looks like this: Is there any way to default to the first view option for all types of folders? I tried view options in Finder, but it didn't seem to work.

    Hello everyone, I'm attempting to install OpenBSD on a fancy new home server equipment I just bought and here is my problem. I followed this guide to create a bootable USB flash drive from an OpenBSD VM I have on my laptop but when I try to boot my laptop on it all I get is a "No OS" message (I tried two different USB keys). Does anyone know that problem (and its solution) ?

    Is there a way to adjust the scaling of items on the screen in Mac OS X so they are 1 to 1 with the real world? I.E. When I'm working with a line in illustrator that is 5 inches long, and the zoom is 100%, I'd like the actual size of the line on screen to be 5 inches. I've dug into the System Preferences but can't seem to find anything related to this. I'm using Snow Leopard on a 24" iMac

  • chroot on OSX as a different OS

    I was wondering if anyone has been able to use chroot on OSX to run another OS (ubuntu, centos). I know that they are very different, but almost everything I want to use this for wouldn't care about anything at the level of the kernel, so was hoping there would be a way to do this without using a VM. Based off my google searches, I see this question is asked, but no real answer other than "try a VM". Would really like to do this without a VM though.

    Hi so i am trying to install the commands wget and with-readline for use with Mac OS X's terminal. The configuration seems to work fine for both even though i am required to specify for the first one, host= i686-apple. When i get to the make part of the installation, the output is as follows.     Some manipulation with SQL Server require re-starting SQL Server after that. If we restart operation system, does this always mean that we restart SQL Server also (it seems evident that it is so, but just in case I ask to be sure)? Or there could be situation when we should do it explicitely for example by context menu choosing "Restart" in SQL Server Configuration Manager? I.e. could it be necessary for something to restart SQL Server while OS is working?

I rebooted the laptop but nothing has changed.
