• What is the most common way to use a middleware in node with express and connect

  Thinking about the correct way, how to make use of middlewares in a node.js web project using express and connect which is growing up at the moment. Of course there are middlewares right now wich has to pass or extend requests globally but in a lot of cases there are special jobs like prepare incoming data and in this case the middleware would only work for a set of http-methods and routes. I've a component based architecture and each component brings it's own middleware layer which can implement those for requests this component can handle. On app startup any required component is loaded and prepared. Is it a good idea to bind the middleware code execution to URLs to keep cpu load lower or is it better to use middlewares only for global purposes? • suggestions on syntax to express mathematical formula concisely

  hello. I am developing functional domain specific embedded language within C++ to translate formulas into working code as concisely and accurately as possible. I post prototype in the comment, it is about 2 hundred lines long. Right now my language looks something like this (well, actually is going to look like): // implies two nested loops j=0:N, i=0,j (range(i) < j < N)[T(i,j) = (T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; // implies summation over above expression sum(range(i) < j < N))[(T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; I am looking for possible syntax improvements/extensions or just different ideas about expressing mathematical formulas as clearly and precisely as possible (in any language, not just C++). Can you give me some syntax examples relating to my question which can be accomplished in your language of choice which consider useful. • Installer downloads wrong version of sql server compact edition

  I have a Visual Studio setup project which defines SQL Server 3.5 as prerequisite. I also set it up to download the required files from the source (i.e. Microsoft). My project uses Sql Server 3.5 SP1. If I create the installer on my development machine, everything works fine. When the installer is built on the build machine, it downloads the "old" 3.5 version (without SP1) which makes my application crash. (If I install SP1 on the test system manually, the application just works find...) I installed both Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and Sql Server 3.5 SP1 on the build machine. This seems to be some issue with the prerequisite packages but they look the same on the development and the build machines. Any idea what goes wrong here? EDIT Ok, I rechecked it and the package descriptions are'nt the sames. Oddly enough, the .msi file is the right one on the build machine but the old one on the development machine, so I guess if I tried to build an installer which includes the prerequisites, I'd get the wrong result on the dev machine and the right one on the build machine. Extended question: How are the prerequesite packages (under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages\SQL Server Compact Edition) meant to be updated to SP1? Is the SQL Server CE SP1 installer responsible for this?

• Reporting System architecture for better performance

  Hi, We have a product that runs Sql Server Express 2005 and uses mainly ASP.NET. The database has around 200 tables, with a few (4 or 5) that can grow from 300 to 5000 rows per day and keep a history of 5 years, so they can grow to have 10 million rows. We have built a reporting platform, that allows customers to build reports based on templates, fields and filters. We face performance problems almost since the beginning, we try to keep reports display under 10 seconds but some of them go up to 25 seconds (specially on those customers with long history). We keep checking indexes and trying to improve the queries but we get the feeling that there's only so much we can do. Off course the fact that the queries are generated dynamically doesn't help with the optimization. We also added a few tables that keep redundant data, but then we have the added problem of maintaining this data up to date, and also Sql Express has a limit on the size of databases. We are now facing a point where we have to decide if we want to give up real time reports, or maybe cut the history to be able to have better performance. I would like to ask what is the recommended approach for this kind of systems. Also, should we start looking for third party tools/platforms? I know OLAP can be an option but can we make it work on Sql Server Express, or at least with a license that is cheap enough to distribute to thousands of deployments? Thanks

  I have been looking into Node.js, express and Nowjs and love how easy it is to have real time interactions between clients. My background is mostly from CodeIgniter MVC using PHP and MYSql. I want to re make a current web project of mine from scratch to make everything better and more real time with this newer technology. After researching and doing test examples I want to use node.js , express and Nowjs for the real time interactions once someone connects to the socket.io to pull data back to clients. But use Code Igniter for the control of the site and user management , possible shopping cart/store , pretty much everything else. This is purely due to time constraints and that I am already familiar with doing it that way. I have been looking at MongoDB as an alternative to MySql, Basically the app is going to be multiple chat rooms all on one page. with the ability of notifications and private messaging. Lots of data transfer and images. before I started piecing it together I wanted to get people who have already done something similar. My model would use Code Igniter and MySQL to render the page and then connect them onto a node.js server and broadcast using express and nowjs would using a mongoDB be better than mySQL for tons of messages and data being stored or MYSQL? Also does it make since to not make the whole site on Node.js , kinda piece it together like that?

• MSSQL instance shuts down

  I'm currently developing a new ASP.net project hosted on a Windows Server 2008 RC2 with an MSSQL 2008 Express Database. I have three SQL instances (for different purposes) running which currently all contain a single database. For apprently no reason, these instances tend to shut down after some days, for no apparent reason. There might be low or none traffic to these instances, because there might be some days in a row, where I can't develop. It now occured several times, that one or two of these three instances just shut down, so that I can't access the database, without manually starting the instance. I can't seem to find a event log entry for the shutdown, which is most likely because I just enabled logging (why is the default setting off?) So the questions are: * Why does a SQL instance shut down? (Is there such thing as a "Shut down instance after 3 days of inactivity"? * How can I achieve that the instances are running 24/7?

• Using 4 monitors with 2 generic video cards... possible?

  I'm thinking of setting up 4 monitors in a grid, using two video cards, one card to feed each pair of monitors through the card's two DVI ports. The most important requirement for me is to have the grid of monitors act as one single huge screen. Is this scenario possible by using two generic cards like Radeon 4870s on a Windows 7 computer? (I've heard of Eyefinity, but 4870s don't have it) Another issue is that I only have one PCI-Express slot on my computer's motherboard, therefore I'll need to use one of the lesser PCI cards as the second video card. Will this pose problems?

But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem? • Is it possible to power off a PCIe video card/slot? (eg. hot-plug)

  I'm looking at building a system that supports VT-d so I can pass through a high powered loud video card to a Xen/KVM/whatever VM (host will be Linux based). However, when I'm not using the VM I want to turn the video card off so its fan does not run. The card will not be used when the VM isn't running. Anyone know if this is possible? The PCI-Express hot-plug specification allows cutting power to specific slots but I have never heard of anyone doing it with a video card and my searches for information have turned up nothing.

• What is the difference between these Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs?

  The CPU in question is the Pentium Extreme Edition 955. Intel's website shows four "versions", but for the most part they all look identical. They even share the same set of ordering codes. But one of them has a substantially lower TDP, which is seemingly unexplainable - since everything else is the same. Two of them say "LGA775, Tray" and I have no idea what "Tray" means either. Also, two of them have a different SPEC code. What I need to know is: What does "LGA775, Tray" mean? Why does the one CPU have a lower TDP? And what does that mean for me? Does that mean lower maximum power consumption? Does it mean the CPU may be more stable/endurant, because of a lower heat output? Why do two of them have a different SPEC code, and what does this mean? Finally, what does PLGA775 (as opposed to LGA775) mean, and do I need to be worried about that? Even before playing around with the Sql Server Configuration Settings. The other app uses the following connectionstring: Data Source=SERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=OtherDbName;Integrated Security=True;Persist Security Info=False;Connect Timeout=120 I've tried this connectionstring on the app that isn't working and it still doesn't work. • SQL Server instance shuts down

  I'm currently developing a new ASP.NET project hosted on a Windows Server 2008 RC2 with an SQL Server 2008 Express database. I have three SQL Server instances (for different purposes) running which currently all contain a single database. For apparently no reason, these instances tend to shut down after some days. There might be low or no traffic to these instances, because there might be some days in a row, where I can't develop. It now occurred several times, that one or two of these three instances just shut down, so that I can't access the database, without manually starting the instance. I can't seem to find a event log entry for the shutdown, which is most likely because I just enabled logging (why is the default setting off?). So the questions are: * Why does an SQL Server instance shut down? (Is there such a thing as a "Shut down instance after 3 days of inactivity"? * How can I achieve that the instances are running 24/7? Edit: I solved this problem by writing my own application that checks for the status of the SQL Server services. My program will start via a batch file, that gets called by the Windows Task Scheduler every 5 minutes.

• Wireless router blocking some sites while using ethernet is fine

  I'm using Windows 7 and my router is a wireless Apple Airport Express that is approximately two years old. Suddenly I can't access some sites (for example www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se, or www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk, some streamed tv-shows on svtplay.se, and a number of other random sites) when connecting to internet with my router. It worked good until recently and I'm fairly sure this problem emerged when my ISP upgraded from 10/10mbit to 100/10mbit speed. Most other sites like facebook and google works fine. When using my network cable to connect to internet everything works fine and I can access these sites. Firmware is current and I've tried reseting the router to factory defaults. Tried different browsers, and I can't ping the "blocked" sites either. Tracert www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se starts with 10.0.0.1 and continues through a number of long addresses until it says timeout. The last working address before timeout was sth-tcy-ipcore01-ge-0-2-0.neq.dgcsystems.net [83.241.252.13], if it matters. Tracert www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk also eventually gives me a timeout. When the network cable is plugged in, I still get timeout on tracert www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se even though I can access the site in Chrome. Weird. www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk doesn't give me a tracert timeout when the cable is plugged in, and I can access the site as usual. I've tried changing DNS servers to use opendns servers instead, but to no use. I've tried pinging these two sites with a lower MTU packet size (with this method: http://www.richard-slater.co.uk/archives/2009/10/23/change-your-mtu-under-vista-or-windows-7/), but still can't access them through ping... I don't know what to do anymore.... any suggestions???

If I perform same search on amazon.com, the only version I can find is having the code fqc-05956 and is labeled System Builder. There's not much information about licensing of Windows 8 that I could find. According to this article when using System Builder it can be transferred from one computer to another. What are the differences in licensing between those 2? Is fqc-05955 transferable from one hardware to another like System Builder is? Can I install fqc-05955 on a computer I already own that has no prior windows licensing? I am asking this, since many stores that sell fqc-05955 say it can only be bough with a computer. • Disable Offline Files (mobsync.exe) on Windows 7 Home

  This morning I was watching the CPU graph of a Windows 7 Home laptop and noticed that every few seconds, the CPU would spike several percent. I watched the processes and determined that it was mobsync.exe (Offline Files) that was the culprit. I tried the usual steps that Googling turns up, and clicking the Manage Offline Files link to bring up the Offline Files dialog to click Disable Synch does not work because the dialog will not display. This makes sense since everything I have read indicates that Offline Files is not even included/supported in the Home version, so I am at a loss as to why it is running at all, let alone why it is sucking up CPU cycles. (My best guess is that it was started when they pressed Win+X to access the Mobility Center.) Of course I can just kill mobsync, but it could always just come back. How/why would mobsync be running on a Home version and how can it be disabled (of course the Group Policy editor is not available on a Home version).

• Migrating from SQL Server to firebird: pro and cons

  I am considering the migration for 4 reasons: 1) SQLSERVER installation is a nightmare, expecially for 1-user software (Even if typically I have 3-20 users, sometimes I sell my software to single users: it is incredible to have troubles installing the DB, while installing the applicatino means copying an exe...). (note my max installation is 100 users, but there is no an upper limit). Software installs in 10 seconds, SQLServer in 1 hour. Firebird installation is much easier. 2) SQLSERVER runs on windows server only 3) My customers have all the express edition 4) i am not using any advanced feature, I am now starting using filestream, but the main reason for this is that Express edition has 4/10GB db size limit So these are all Pros of moving to Firebird. Which are the cons? I can also plan to support both platforms, but this will backfire I fear.
