  • Is regularly hiring and making permanent staff redundant normal? [on hold]

    - by ses
    Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

  • how to dynamically replace css?

    - by photographer
    I've got an image on the page (class='image') within the div (class='galleria_wrapper') and want to place a caption (class='caption') at the lower right corner under that image. The image could be vertical or horizontal, and making a fixed padding-right value let's say .caption<{float:right;padding-top:5px;padding-right:90px;} is not working for one or another. I need to switch on the fly padding-right value depending on horizontal or vertical image is currently on the page. I can theoretically access image's width through document.getElementByName('image').width although don't understand where to put that code. So, I probably need something like that: document.getElementByClass('caption').padding-right = (document.getElementByName('galleria_wrapper').width - document.getElementByName('image').width)/2 Where do I put this code? I do have that in my css file: .caption{float:right;padding-top:5px;} which places the caption below the image, but to far to the right (div 'galleria_wrapper' is wider than most of the images supposed to be displayed within that area). I have an img tag in the html: <img src=image title='this is caption' /></li> ...and some JavaScript which makes title displayed styled by the "caption" css definition. How do I assign variable value for the padding-right without in-advance knowledge of particular image's width?

  • Track "commands" send to WPF window by touchpad (Bamboo)

    - by Christian
    Hi, I just bought a touchpad wich allows drawing and using multitouch. The api is not supported fully by windows 7, so I have to rely on the build in config dialog. The basic features are working, so if I draw something in my WPF tool, and use both fingers to do a right click, I can e.g. change the color. What I want to do now is assign other functions to special features in WPF. Does anybody know how to find out in what way the pad communicates with the app? It works e.g. in Firefox to scroll, like it should (shown on this photo). But I do not know how to hookup the scroll event, I tried a Scrollviewer (which ignores my scroll attempts) and I also hooked up an event with the keypressed, but it does not fire (I assume the pad does not "press a key" but somehow sends the "scroll" command direclty. How can I catch that command in WPF? Thanks a lot, Chris [EDIT] I got the scroll to work, but only up and down, not left and right. It was just a stupid "listbox in scrollviewer" mistake. But still not sure about commands like ZOOM in (which is working even in paint).. Which API contains such things? [EDIT2] Funny, the zoom works in Firefox, the horizontal scrolling does not. But, in paint, the horizontal scrolling works... [EDIT 3] Just asked in the wacom forum, lets see about vendor support reaction time... http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1939 Here is a picture of the config surface to get the idea what I am talking about: (Bamboo settings, I try to catch these commands in WPF)

  • Is this possible? Overflow-y:visible with overflow-x:scroll/auto

    - by Kostrzak
    We have a problem in our team which we cannot solve :/ We made our own Grid control. When you click on the icon next to column name, the pop-up div (call it divFilter) appears and you can set filtering there. There can be dynamically generated div for each column so we can have f.e 5 divFilters in 5 different places. It works, but the only problem is that when there is for example 1-2 records on the Grid, the pop-up div will be displayed under horizontal scroll of div. We've tried with z-index but it looks like that won't work. We can set overflow:visible but we also need that horizontal scroll(our grids have up to 50 columns). We thought that we can solve it buy setting overflow-y visible and overflow-x:scroll but according to our tests and that page: http://www.brunildo.org/test/Overflowxy2.html it isn't possible(for IE7,IE8). I've also found this similar question CSS overflow-y:visible, overflow-x:scroll ,but our pop-up div must be position:absolute, because we need to position them under columns. Any ideas or workaround to it? Is it even possible to set it only with CSS without using Javascript(for dynamically changing gridview hight etc.). Thanks!!

  • How do you word wrap a RichTextField for Blackberry

    - by Kai
    I've been trying to modify a rich text field to display correctly in its half of the horizontal field. The goal is this: --------------------------- | address is | ***********| | very long | ** IMAGE **| | state, zip | ***********| --------------------------- Where address is a single string separate from the city and zip. I am modifying the address field like this: RichTextField addrField = new RichTextField(address) { public int getPreferredWidth() { return 200; } protected void layout(int maxWidth,int maxHeight) { super.layout(getPreferredWidth(),maxHeight); setExtent(getPreferredWidth(), getHeight()); } }; The results look like this: ----------------------------- | address is ve| ***********| | state, zip | ** IMAGE **| | | ***********| ----------------------------- where clearly the address is just going under the image. Both horizontal fields are static 200 pixels wide. It's not like the system wouldn't know where to wrap the address. However, I have heard it is not easy to do this and is not done automatically. I have had no success finding a direct answer online. I have found people saying you need to do it in a custom layout manager, some refer to the RichTextField API, which is of no use. But nobody actually mentions how to do it. I understand that I may need to read character by character and set where the line breaks should happen. What I don't know is how exactly to do any of this. You can't just count characters and assume each is worth 5 pixels, and you shouldn't have to. Surely there must be some way to achieve this in a way that makes sense. Any suggestions?

  • Pagination in Joomla!

    Hi every one. I'm a bit new to Joomla! and I'm building my new web site using Joomla! 1.5.8 with a template bought from RocketTheme. The long article in question is a gallery of photos, and I wanted to create a horizontal pagination nav-bar in the footer of the gallery, I just clicked pagebreak where I wanted to paginate in my article in the WYSIWYG editor and thought that it's actually all I have to do. What I got was ugly; a vertically directed navigation bar placed in the top right side of my gallery with the links to each part of the article, the all without the minimum styling. And as I see it's a table! Why not outputting a list instead of a table! (Well this is not actually my concern right now). I can understand CSS and html, but I'm not really a PHP guy, so I don't understand how to use pagination.php or pagenavigation.php! Do I have to customize one of them to have my nav-bar? What I have to do to get that horizontal nav-bar? Really thanks in advance. Wassim

  • How do I use a different image for each JQuery UI Slider handle

    - by Tom
    I'm using a JQuery UI slider which has two handles (a.k.a range slider). I know how to style the first handle: .ui-slider-horizontal .ui-slider-handle {background: white url(http://stackoverflow.com/content/img/so/vote-arrow-down.png) no-repeat scroll 50% 50%;} But how do I style the second handle differently? Using Firebug I can see Jquery does not uniquely identify each handle: <div id="hourlyRateSlider" class="ui-slider ui-slider-horizontal ui-widget ui-widget-content ui-corner-all"> <div class="ui-slider-range ui-widget-header" style="left: 26%; width: 46%;"/> <a class="ui-slider-handle ui-state-default ui-corner-all" href="#" style="left: 26%;"/> <a class="ui-slider-handle ui-state-default ui-corner-all" href="#" style="left: 72%;"/> </div> So I imagine I have to use either a CSS child selector which could be cross-browser problematic. Or I could use some JQuery trickery to add a CSS class to the second handle? Anyone done this in a neat way before?

  • WPF - expander Collapsed event being triggered by child controls with validation

    - by Shaboboo
    I have an expander that contains an ItemsControl. The items in the itemsControl are templated, some have textboxes in them, others have checkboxes. Both have bindings that cause validation. The styling and validation is working as expected. The problem is when I first expand the expander and cause a change to either control, the expander collapses again, this is not what I want. If I repeat this a second time this does not happen. I'm not sure what is triggering this strange behaviour. I've tried setting the focus to the itemsControl when the expander expands with no luck. What is differnt the second time it's expanded? Could it be the validation? Any Ideas? XAML: <Expander Header="{Binding SubSectionName}" Padding="0" > <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding ConfigSubSectionSettings}" ItemTemplateSelector="{StaticResource Settings_Selector}" /> </Expander> <!-- Templates selected by the ItemTemplateSelector --> <DataTemplate x:Key="subSection_Bool"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock x:Name="lbl" Text="{Binding SubSectionName}" > <CheckBox x:Name="chk" IsChecked="{Binding BoolValue, ValidatesOnDataErrors=True}" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="2" > </StackPanel > </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate x:Key="subSection_Text"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock x:Name="lbl" Text="{Binding SubSectionName}" /> <TextBox x:Name="txt" VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="{Binding StringValue, ValidatesOnDataErrors=True}" /> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate>

  • Linq to find pair of points with longest length?

    - by Chris
    I have the following code: foreach (Tuple<Point, Point> pair in pointsCollection) { var points = new List<Point>() { pair.Value1, pair.Value2 }; } Within this foreach, I would like to be able to determine which pair of points has the most significant length between the coordinates for each point within the pair. So, let's say that points are made up of the following pairs: (1) var points = new List<Point>() { new Point(0,100), new Point(100,100) }; (2) var points = new List<Point>() { new Point(150,100), new Point(200,100) }; So I have two sets of pairs, mentioned above. They both will plot a horizontal line. I am interested in knowing what the best approach would be to find the pair of points that have the greatest distance between, them, whether it is vertically or horizontally. In the two examples above, the first pair of points has a difference of 100 between the X coordinate, so that would be the point with the most significant difference. But if I have a collection of pairs of points, where some points will plot a vertical line, some points will plot a horizontal line, what would be the best approach for retrieving the pair from the set of points whose difference, again vertically or horizontally, is the greatest among all of the points in the collection? Thanks! Chris

  • Insufferable word wrap in Visual Studio XAML editor - is there any relief for 2010?

    - by DanM
    Just curious if the XAML editor is any better at auto-formatting and wrapping attributes in Visual Studio 2010. Here's how the editor auto wraps attributes in VS 2008: <StackPanel Grid.Row="0" Grid.ColumnSpan="3"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontWeight="Bold" Text="Current User:" /> <ComboBox x:Name="_usersComboBox" Margin="5,0,0,0" Width="200" ItemsSource="{Binding Users}" SelectedValuePath="Name" SelectedValue="System Administration"> <ComboBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> Here's how I'd like the editor to auto wrap attributes: <StackPanel Grid.Row="0" Grid.ColumnSpan="3"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" FontWeight="Bold" Text="Current User:" /> <ComboBox x:Name="_usersComboBox" Margin="5,0,0,0" Width="200" ItemsSource="{Binding Users}" SelectedValuePath="Name" SelectedValue="System Administration"> <ComboBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> Does VS 2010 grant my wish?

  • Is it possible to template a template in WPF XAML?

  • What's a good way to remove all of the subviews of a UIScrollView?

    - by Moshe
    I have a scroll view and I need to reload the contents often while my app is running. Right now, I'm using the following line of code to remove the subviews before adding them back again: [scrollView.subviews makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(removeFromSuperview)]; Should I be using the following instead? scrollView.subviews = nil; For some reason, the (first) above line of code seems to crash the app every 16 times it is run. Am I leaking memory somewhere? The following method takes an array of views, the scroller (which is a constant) and the direction. Edit: - (void)loadViews:(NSArray *)views IntoScroller:(UIScrollView *)scroller withDirection:(NSString *)direction{ //Set up the scrollView [scrollView.subviews makeObjectsPerformSelector:@selector(removeFromSuperview)]; if([direction isEqualToString:@"horizontal"]){ scrollView.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768); scrollView.contentSize = CGSizeMake(scrollView.frame.size.width * [[NSNumber numberWithUnsignedInt:[views count]] floatValue], scrollView.frame.size.height); }else if([direction isEqualToString:@"vertical"]){ scrollView.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768); scrollView.contentSize = CGSizeMake(scrollView.frame.size.width, scrollView.frame.size.height * [[NSNumber numberWithUnsignedInt:[views count]] floatValue]); } for (int i=0; i<[[NSNumber numberWithUnsignedInt:[views count]] intValue]; i++) { [[[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view] setFrame:scrollView.frame]; if([direction isEqualToString:@"horizontal"]){ [[[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view] setFrame:CGRectMake(i * [[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view].frame.size.width, 0, scrollView.frame.size.width, scrollView.frame.size.height)];//CGRectMake(i * announcementView.view.frame.size.width, -scrollView.frame.origin.x, scrollView.frame.size.width, scrollView.frame.size.height)]; }else if([direction isEqualToString:@"vertical"]){ [[[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view] setFrame:CGRectMake(0, i * [[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view].frame.size.height, scrollView.frame.size.width, scrollView.frame.size.height)]; } [scrollView addSubview:[[views objectAtIndex:[[NSNumber numberWithInt:i] unsignedIntValue]] view]]; } }

  • Silverlight - Get the ItemsControl of a DataTemplate

    - by user208662
    Hello, I have a Silverlight application that is using a DataGrid. Inside of that DataGrid I have a DataTemplate that is defined like the following: <Grid x:Name="myGrid" Tag="{Binding}" Loaded="myGrid_Loaded"> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding MyItems}" Tag="{Binding}"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Width="138"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Type}" /> <TextBox x:Name="myTextBox" TextChanged="myTextBox_TextChanged" /> </StackPanel> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> </Grid> When a user enters text into the TextBox, I have an event (myTextBox_TextChanged) that must be fired at this point. When that event gets fired, I would like to get the ItemsControl element that is the container for this TextBox. How do I get that ItemsControl from my event handler? Please note: Because the ItemsControl is in the DataTemplate of DataGrid, I don't believe I can just add an x:Name and reference it from my code-behind. Or is there a way to do that? Thank you!

  • I can't set a border around my StackPanel. Any help?

    - by Sergio Tapia
    Here's my XAML code: <Window x:Class="CarFinder.MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Search for cars in TuMomo" Height="480" Width="600"> <DockPanel Margin="8"> <Border CornerRadius="6" BorderBrush="Gray" Background="LightGray" BorderThickness="2" Padding="8"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" DockPanel.Dock="Top" Height="25"> <TextBlock FontSize="14" Padding="0 0 8 0"> Search: </TextBlock> <TextBox x:Name="txtSearchTerm" Width="400" /> <Image Source="/CarFinder;component/Images/Chrysanthemum.jpg" /> </StackPanel> </Border> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" DockPanel.Dock="Top" Height="25"> </StackPanel> </DockPanel> </Window> The border is set around the entire window. And also, when I create another StackPanel it's added to the right of my previous StackPanel instead of being added under it. What's the reason for this?

  • Gaps between items in my ListBox

    - by drasto
    When I create ListBox with horizontal items ordering for example like this: <DockPanel> <ListBox> <ListBox.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <VirtualizingStackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" /> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ListBox.ItemsPanel> <ListBoxItem> <Button Content="Hello" /> </ListBoxItem> <ListBoxItem> <Button Content="Hello" /> </ListBoxItem> </ListBox> </DockPanel> I have small gaps between buttons in the list as indicated by the arrows on following picture: How can I get rid of those gaps please ? I need to have items in ListBox just next to each other. I have tried changing ItemTemplate of the ListBox but it did not help.

  • silverlight treeview not loading subitems

    - by Jakob
    I'm interested in finding out why this isn't working: I have a treeview with some hierarchicaldatatemplates looking like this: <UserControl.Resources> <sdk:HierarchicalDataTemplate x:Key="nodeEntry"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=Title}" /> </StackPanel> </sdk:HierarchicalDataTemplate> <sdk:HierarchicalDataTemplate x:Key="rootEntry" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=Nodes}" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource nodeEntry}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Path=Name}" /> </StackPanel> </sdk:HierarchicalDataTemplate> </UserControl.Resources> <sdk:TreeView Height="250" HorizontalAlignment="Left" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource rootEntry}" ItemsSource="{Binding ElementName=subjectDomainDataSource, Path=Data}" Name="rootTreeView" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="180"/> The data is passed to the treeview from a domainservice using this method: public IEnumerable<Subject> GetSubjectList(Guid userid) { DataLoadOptions loadopts = new DataLoadOptions(); loadopts.LoadWith<Root>(s => s.Nodes); this.DataContext.LoadOptions = loadopts; return this.DataContext.Roots; } why then are only the root nodes shown in the treeview as if it only loaded a flat list, and not a hierarchy where the root Loads the NodesCollection?

  • How can I force a ListView with a custom panel to re-measure when the ListView width goes below the

    - by Scott Whitlock
    Sorry for the long winded question (I'm including background here). If you just want the question, go to the end. I have a ListView with a custom Panel implementation that I'm using to implement something similar to a WrapPanel, but not quite. I'm overriding the MeasureOverride and ArrangeOverride methods in the custom panel. If I do the naive implementation of a WrapPanel in the MeasureOverride method it doesn't work when the ListView is resized. Let's say the custom panel does a measure and the constraint is a width of 100 and let's say I have 3 items that are 40 wide each. The naive approach is to return a size of 80,80 but when I resize the window that the ListView is in, down to say 75, it just turns on the horizontal scrollbar and never calls measure or arrange again (it does keep measuring and arranging if the width is greater than 80). To get around this, I hard coded the measurement to only have a width of the widest item. Then in the arrange, it gives me more space than I asked for and I use as much horizontal space as I can before wrapping. If I resize the window smaller than the smallest item in the ListView, then it turns on the scrollbar, which is great. Unfortunately this is causing a big problem when I have one of these ListViews with a custom panel nested inside of another one. The outside one works ok, but I can't get the inside one to "take as much as it needs". It always sizes to the smallest item, and the only way around it is to set the MinWidth to be something greater than zero. Anyway, stepping back for a second, I think the real way to fix this is to go back to the Naive implementation of the WrapPanel but force it to re-measure when the ListView width goes below the Size I previously returned as a measurement. That should solve my problem with the nested one. So, that's my question: I have a ListView with a custom panel If I return a measurement width on the panel and the ListView is resized to less than that width, it stops calling MeasureOverride How can I get it to continue calling MeasureOverride?

  • databind the Source property of the WebBrowser in WPF

    - by Russ
    Does anyone know how to databind the .Source property of the WebBrowser in WPF ( 3.5SP1 )? I have a listview that I want to have a small WebBrowser on the left, and content on the right, and to databind the source of each WebBrowser with the URI in each object bound to the list item. This is what I have as a proof of concept so far, but the "<WebBrowser Source="{Binding Path=WebAddress}"" does not compile. <DataTemplate x:Key="dealerLocatorLayout" DataType="DealerLocatorAddress"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <!--Web Control Here--> <WebBrowser Source="{Binding Path=WebAddress}" ScrollViewer.HorizontalScrollBarVisibility="Disabled" ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Disabled" Width="300" Height="200" /> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Label Content="{Binding Path=CompanyName}" FontWeight="Bold" Foreground="Blue" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=DisplayName}" FontWeight="Bold" /> </StackPanel> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Street[0]}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Street[1]}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=PhoneNumber}"/> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=FaxNumber}"/> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Email}"/> <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=WebAddress}"/> </StackPanel> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate>
