    I'm getting ready to start an open-source project that will target .NET/Mono. For those who have started their own open source venture... Do you let the fact that a project is going to be open-source weigh on the decision of what language to use? For example. Most .NET open-source projects are written in C#. However, if you were more comfortable with VB.NET, Boo, Nemerle, etc... would you use it? What other considerations are there? This particular project will be a core library and application for geocaching. Similar to GSAK.

    Do you know any book, blog, tutorial which explains in a detailed way the use of some open source projects? Maybe you have written such a tutorial, example of open source libraries, and your final product is great for a beginner to understand it. I'm in the learning stage of OOP and I really need to learn by examples. I'll like to find some text which explains the use of some open source software/libraries and the good practices. Beign honestly I feel scared to use the open source libraries as I wish/think at this moment. I feel like as I still write procedural code and not OOP. Do you know such tutorials, links, blogs, stories, pages? PS: I know C and PHP. I can't say that I know C++ yet, and that's why I need your help.

Now I want the users to be able to just double click the file and have it open with my application. I tried to set the "Always use the selected program..." option in the windows "Open With" dialog box, but do not know how to receive the file name that Windows sends to my application.   • SQL SERVER – Attach mdf file without ldf file in Database

    Background Story: One of my friends recently called up and asked me if I had spare time to look at his database and give him a performance tuning advice. Because I had some free time to help him out, I said yes. I asked him to send me the details of his database structure and sample data. He said that since his database is in a very early stage and is small as of the moment, so he told me that he would like me to have a complete database. My response to him was “Sure! In that case, take a backup of the database and send it to me. I will restore it into my computer and play with it.” He did send me his database; however, his method made me write this quick note here. Instead of taking a full backup of the database and sending it to me, he sent me only the .mdf (primary database file). In fact, I asked for a complete backup (I wanted to review file groups, files, as well as few other details).  Upon calling my friend,  I found that he was not available. Now,  he left me with only a .mdf file. As I had some extra time, I decided to checkout his database structure and get back to him regarding the full backup, whenever I can get in touch with him again. Technical Talk: If the database is shutdown gracefully and there was no abrupt shutdown (power outrages, pulling plugs to machines, machine crashes or any other reasons), it is possible (there’s no guarantee) to attach .mdf file only to the server. Please note that there can be many more reasons for a database that is not getting attached or restored. In my case, the database had a clean shutdown and there were no complex issues. I was able to recreate a transaction log file and attached the received .mdf file. There are multiple ways of doing this. I am listing all of them here. Before using any of them, please consult the Domain Expert in your company or industry. Also, never attempt this on live/production server without the presence of a Disaster Recovery expert. USE [master] GO -- Method 1: I use this method EXEC sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname='TestDb', @physname=N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf' GO -- Method 2: CREATE DATABASE TestDb ON (FILENAME = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf') FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG GO Method 2: If one or more log files are missing, they are recreated again. There is one more method which I am demonstrating here but I have not used myself before. According to Book Online, it will work only if there is one log file that is missing. If there are more than one log files involved, all of them are required to undergo the same procedure. -- Method 3: CREATE DATABASE TestDb ON ( FILENAME = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\TestDb.mdf') FOR ATTACH GO Please read the Book Online in depth and consult DR experts before working on the production server. In my case, the above syntax just worked fine as the database was clean when it was detached.   • Unable to delete file from read-only file system

    I cannot delete files, when I tried to delete the file, this message appeard: "Error while deleting. There was an error deleting file2.rar." This is what I get from clicking on SHOW MORE DETAILS: "Error removing file: Read-only file system" This is what I've tried so far: delete from the downloads directory from my user. deleting permanently, but it does not work.   • Problem opening SFX archive file(.exe) using the archive manager

    I have installed both rar and unrar using apt-install but I am still not able to use archive manager for opening the archive file.. I have also tried installing p7zip(p7zip-full and p7zip) but no improvements... However, when I use command-line for extracting the files from the archive using unrar or rar the command executes successfully... Is there any other open source software I should install for viewing the contents of the SFX archive or what else should I install to view the same in the archive manager.. Thanks in advance...

  • Small projects using the cathedral model: does open-source lower security?

    We know of Linus' law: With enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow In general, people seem to say that open-source software is more secure because of that very thing, but... There are many small OSS projects with just 1 or 2 developers (the cathedral model, as described by ESR). For these projects, does releasing the source-code actually lower the security? For projects like the Linux kernel there are thousands of developers and security vulnerabilities are quite likely going to be found, but when just some few people look through the source code, while allowing crackers (black hat hackers) to see the source as well, is the security lowered instead of increased? I know that the security advantage closed-source software has over OSS is security through obscurity, which isn't good (at all), but it could help to some degree, at least by giving those few devs some more time (security through obscurity doesn't help with the if but with the when). EDIT: The question isn't whether OSS is more secure than non-OSS software but if the advantages for crackers are greater than the advantages for the developers who want to prevent security vulnerabilities from being exploited.

    Reference The post that started it all In order to clear up the original question I asked in a provocative manner, I have posed this question. If you learn an algorithm from an open source project, is it OK to use that algorithm in a separate closed sourced project? And if not, does that imply that you cannot use that knowledge ever again? If you can use it, what circumstance could that be? Just to clarify, I am not trying to evade a licence, otherwise I would not have asked the question in the first place. I believe this presents a difficult question and it is interesting to know where the debate can end up.

    I love anything that can be done to clean up source code and make it more readable.  So, when I came upon this post, I was pretty excited.  This is precisely the kind of thing I love. I have never felt good about ‘file separator’ strings b/c of their ugliness and verbosity. In Java we have: 1: String path = "lib"+File.separator+"etc"; And in Ruby a popular method is: 1: path = File.join("lib","etc") Now, by overloading the ‘/’ operator on a String in Ruby: 1: class String 2: def /(str_to_join) 3: File.join(self, str_to_join) 4: end 5: end We can now write: 1: path = 'lib'/'src'/'main' Brilliant!

  • How can I open an .xps file in Evince?

    On projects.gnome.org I read that evince/Document Viewer supports xps-files. But when I try to open an xps-file I get the error message Unable to open documentFile type Zip archive (application/zip) is not supported Reading "the full list of supported document formats" on live.gnome.org I can't find xps there. Now I ask myself (and you): Isn't Document Viewer able to open xps-files, or is there something wrong with that xps-file I try to open? I specifically want to do this with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric. The PPA ppa:medigeek/evince-xps has no solution for 11.10, and the xpstopdf utility mixes up the letters from my xps file totally - the new pdf then isn't usable. I want to see a solution for Evince or Gnome in general, not get a recommendation for a KDE application like here.

Maybe, some of old games were released as free or open source (I'm interested in the graphical assets only)? I heard something about Red Alert been released as free, but I'm not sure if it's permitted to reuse graphical assets in such manner. Do You know such games?   • On what basis would you split donation money among your open source team members without any strife?

    I am a developer of an open source project which is hosted in SourceForge. It started out as a little app then after some releases, it got more and more popular and it started consuming more time and responsibility from me. So I have enabled the donation option in SourceForge. I'm passionate to continue developing it for free but if (ever) any money comes in, how should I split it with my team? Should I split the amount equally among the number of team members? (50-50 as it is two-member team now) Number of classes, commits or any other valuable submissions by team members? Any other idea? What would you do in such situation? Please give your opinions. I hope this question will be useful for others.

  • Is there a way to prevent others to steal your open source project and use it to make a profit?

    This might seems like a silly question to ask, but I can't really figure out the answer. The title pretty much says it all. Let's say you have an open source music player, along comes someone, copies it, adds features, modifies the interface, etc and sells it. Nobody would find out. So how does it work? Related: I'm working in some projects myself to make me more employable, so employers can take a look at my code but with some of them I don't feel like uploading them to an online repository, ie sourceforge, and make them visible for the general public.

  • Scalable distributed file system for blobs like images and other documents

    Cassandra & HBase both do not efficiently support storage of blobs like images. Storing directly on HDFS stresses the Namenode because of huge number of files. Facebook uses Haystack for images and attachments storage, but this is not open source. So is Lustre a good choice for distributed blob storage? I have read that Amazon S3 is used by many, but this would cost money and personally, I would not like to rely on third party system. What are other suggestions?

  • File property information (last write time and file size) in explorer out of date by hours over netw

    An application is running on a windows XP prof machine picking up file from a network share from another windows machine. It detects that the file has been updated (by date and time or optionally file size) and reads it for any new data. Most of the time the last write time and file size, seems to be up to date. Occasionally, this information stops being updated, even though the file is growing (intermittently during the day) with appended content, so that the last write time and file size remain fixed at some arbitrary moment. This is visible in explorer, where it shows a fixed last write time on the reading machine. Just opening the file to edit it in notepad, immediately refreshes the file properties, and the other application picks up where it left of. The file location can't be changed, nor the location of the relevant applications. Any solutions to resolve this problem?

  • Best practices for including open source code from other public projects?

    If I use an existing open source project that is hosted for example on github within one of my projects, should I check in the code from the other project into my public repo or not? I have mixed feelings about this, #1 I want to give proper credit and attribution to the original developer, and if appropriate I will contribute back any changes I need to make. However given that I have developed / tested against a specific revision of the other projects code, that is the version that I want to distribute to users of my project. Here is the specific use case to illustrate my point. I am looking for a more generalized answer than this specific case. I am developing simple framework using rabbitmq and python for outbound messages that will allow for sending sms, twitter, email, and is extensible to support additional messaging buses as well. There is a project on github that will make the creation and sending of SMS messages developed by another person. When I create my own repo how do I account for the code that I am including from the other project?

    I've got a great idea for an open source project. What should I do before starting, to make sure that I'm not duplicating anyone's efforts? Of course I've googled, but which keywords to use isn't obvious. Is there a site to discuss such ideas? To address a common answer: My goal is not to be the author of a successful project. It is to make sure that this product exists, and can be improved. (There's already a similar commercial venture, which is of low quality and not being developed.) Thus, it won't help me to have the only project that can be found in this niche. If there's a start out there, I'd like to find it and help.

  • I need a backend system that is integrated with web services, is there an open source solution?

    I'm basically familiar with what I need in order to setup web services to talk with a centralized db, but if I don't have to go through and do all the work, I'd rather not.   • Big delay to open web pages on Ubuntu 11.10; also slow torrent client speed

    The keywords for my issue are too common among other issues, so, I couldn't find anything that could answer me: why will it take around 30+ seconds for any of my browsers to open a page? happens even with google.com... with both Firefox and Chromium. This does not happen while I use Windows, from exactly the same point at my house (I've got enough wi-fi signal here for sure). Also, the standard torrent client won't hit the max download speed... I can hit 1 Mb/s with utorrent on Windows, and can't go over 300 kbps here. I tried changing the program settings, no results. Please help me. I REALLY don't wanna go back to Windows. Thanks in advance, I admire this community, and I'm sorry that I couldn't find something that could help me. I already solved a lot of issues without asking, but couldn't do it this time.
