  What software would be a good idea to get for a new/freshly reformatted PC? Feel free to rank how vital each piece of software is, as well as possible alternatives. Microsoft Office Suite // OpenOffice is the first thing to come to mind, but things such as .net framework doesn't pop up to mind and things of that nature are a pain to deal with later on in certain situations.

  I'm making a LaTeX document for someone. A certain piece of text looks "bold" for them, even though I'm not using the \textbf command. It's just a normal default LaTeX font. Is there any command to make a 'lighter version', i.e. make the text lighter, thinner? Something that looks to normal text, what normal text looks to bold?

Will I introduce a significant performance penalty? In Objective C, is there a quicker way of assessing whether a given object instance is of certain class type? • JSF Ajax refresh issue

  In my JSF page, I have a dropdown that needs to be populated onload of the page which is set in request scope, now I have a Ajax call that refreshes a part of the page. The Ajax piece works fine but the issue is on refresh it also calls the getter for the Dropdown and returns null ( because its in request scope). To me it makes no sense to call the getter for a component that's not part of the Ajax refresh. Am I doing it correct , please suggest.

  I'm trying to turn a method I have right now into a more "generic" method that returns a string. Right now, the method uses a statement like this: var app = (from d in testContext.DAPPs where d.sserID == (Guid)user.ProviderUserKey select d).ToList(); I process the results of "app", add extra text etc. The piece that changes (that I need to make more "generic") is the table name (DAPPs). Is there a way I can do that, or, a better way to go around this all together?

• Why does Microsoft Windows' performance appear to degrade over time?

  Windows XP/2k3 and earlier (can't attest to Vista, but suspect it's the same) all appear to become more sluggish over time as applications are installed and uninstalled. This is not a scientifically tested observation, but more of a learned-through-experience piece of wisdom. (I've always suspected the registry as being behind the issue.) • Are has collisions with different file sizes just as likely as same file size?

  I'm hashing a large number of files, and to avoid hash collisions, I'm also storing a file's original size - that way, even if there's a hash collision, it's extrememly unlikely that the file sizes will also be identical. Is this sound (a hash collision is equally likely to be of any size), or do I need another piece of information (if a collision is more likely to also be the same length as the original). Or, more generally: Is every file just as likely to produce a particular hash, regardless of original file size?
