  • Converting a PowerShell Script into a Module Part 2

In this article the author explains how PSModuleInfo object for a module can be retrieved. Further, he shows how code can be injected into the module to manipulate the state of a module without having to reload it. He also explains how to directly set some metadata elements, like the module description, and some other PSModuleInfo object features.

  • Full automatic application trace for .net v4

    - by JL
I would like to implement a way to trace every line of code in an application that is written for .net v4.0. An example would be. If I had the following function. private bool hasValue(string value) { if(string.isnullorempty(value) { return false; } else { return true; }} Then when the function is called I want detailed trace logs to contain something like this: Function called |Line 10 |Signature private bool hasValue(string value)|ValuesPassed hasValue("") Line Evaluated | Line 11 | if(string.isnullorempty(value) |ValuesPassed if(string.isnullorempty("") - evaluation returned true entered line 13 |signature return false|return action taken. This tracing can be done manually, but its a lot of work, and would dirty the code. Isn't there a way to get this level of tracing automatically with .net or 3rd party plugin? Thank you

  • How do you increase the number of processes in parallel with Powershell 3?

    - by Mark Shay
    I am trying to run 20 processes in parallel. I changed the session as below, but having no luck. I am getting only up to 5 parallel processes per session. $wo=New-PSWorkflowExecutionOption -MaxSessionsPerWorkflow 50 -MaxDisconnectedSessions 200 -MaxSessionsPerRemoteNode 50 -MaxActivityProcesses 50 Register-PSSessionConfiguration -Name ITWorkflows -SessionTypeOption $wo -Force Get-PSSessionConfiguration ITWorkflows | Format-List -Property * Is there a switch parameter to increase the number of processes? This is what I am running: Workflow MyWorkflow1 { Parallel { InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 2 and 2975416"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 2975417 and 5950831"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 5950832 and 8926246"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 8926247 and 11901661"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 11901662 and 14877076"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns"where OrderId between 14877077 and 17852491"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 17852492 and 20827906"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 20827907 and 23803321"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 23803322 and 26778736"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 26778737 and 29754151"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 29754152 and 32729566"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 32729567 and 35704981"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 35704982 and 38680396"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 38680397 and 432472144"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 432472145 and 435447559"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 435447560 and 438422974"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 864944289 and 867919703"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 867919704 and 870895118"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 870895119 and 1291465602"} InlineScript { import-module \\PS_Scripts\bulkins.ps1; BulkIns "where OrderId between 1291465603 and 1717986945"} }

  • MSBuild / PowerShell: Copy SQL Server 2012 database to SQL Azure via BACPAC (for Continuous Integration)

    - by giveme5minutes
I'm creating a continuous integration MSBuild script which copies a database in on-premise SQL Server 2012 to SQL Azure. Easy right? Methods After a fair bit of research I've come across the following methods: Use PowerShell to access the DAC library directly, then use the MSBuild PowerShell extension to wrap the script. This would require installing PowerShell 3 and working out how to make the MSBuild PowerShell extension work with it, as apparently MS moved the DAC API to a different namespace in the latest version of the library. PowerShell would give direct access to the API, but may require quite a bit of boilerplate. Use the sample DAC Framework Client Side Tools, which requires compiling them myself, as the downloads available from Codeplex only include the Hosted version. It would also require fixing them to use DAC 3.0 classes as they appear to currently use an earlier version of DAC. I could then call these tools from an <Exec Command="" /> in the MSBuild script. Less boilerplate and if I hit any bumps in the road I can just make changes to the source. Processes Using whichever method, the process could be either: Export from on-premise SQL Server 2012 to local BACPAC Upload BACPAC to blog storage Import BACPAC to SQL Azure via Hosted DAC Or: Export from on-premise SQL Server 2012 to local BACPAC Import BACPAC to SQL Azure via Client DAC Question All of the above seems to be quite a lot of effort for something that seems to be a standard feature... so before I start reinventing the wheel and documenting the results for all to see, is there something really obvious that I've missed here? Is there pre-written script that MS has released that I have not yet uncovered? There's an command in the GUI of SQL Server Management Studio 2012 that does EXACTLY what I'm trying to do (right click on local database, click "Tasks", click "Deploy Database to SQL Azure"). Surely if it's a few clicks in the GUI it must be a single command on the command line somewhere??

  • How do I write a powershell script that gets the file with the most recent last write time from a fo

    - by Shoko
The subject line says it all. I'd also like to do this using pipes. I figured that I could use Get-ChildItem, Measure-Object and Where-Object, but Measure-Object doesn't like dates. Should I have a script block which loops through each item returned from Get-ChildItem and does a comparison to see if it's the most recent? I thought that there should be a handy PS cmdlet for that.

  • Any way to specify a non-positional parameter in a powershell script?

    - by Julian Birch
I've got the following at the start of a script Param( [string]$command, [string]$version = "1.1.0" ) This is fine, only I need for $version to not be a positional parameter, so that if you type .\script.ps1 run argument Then $args should contain argument and $version should be 1.1.0. Is this even possible? I know I can do it with a c# cmdlet, but it would be massively more convenient if I could deliver this as a single script.

  • PowerShell; Use Get-Member to Self Document Nested COM Object

    - by Zion
Anyone know how to use Get-Member to Recursively dump to a text file The entire properties|methods tree of a COM object? (The Output formatting of Get-Object is fine) Instead of giving me only the top level as in this example; New-Object -com AutoItX3.Control | Get-Member I need it to recurse the entire object to return results. If This is not possible, how would I dump the methods/properties of a sub object?

  • List SQL Server Instances using the Registry

    - by BuckWoody
I read this interesting article on using PowerShell and the registry, and thought I would modify his information a bit to list the SQL Server Instances on a box. The interesting thing about listing instances this was is that you can touch remote machines, find the instances when they are off and so on. Anyway, here’s the scriptlet I used to find the Instances on my system: $MachineName = '.' $reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey('LocalMachine', $MachineName) $regKey= $reg.OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Microsoft SQL Server\\Instance Names\\SQL" ) $regkey.GetValueNames() You can read more of his article to find out the reason for the remote registry call and so forth – there are also security implications here for being able to read the registry. Script Disclaimer, for people who need to be told this sort of thing: Never trust any script, including those that you find here, until you understand exactly what it does and how it will act on your systems. Always check the script on a test system or Virtual Machine, not a production system. Yes, there are always multiple ways to do things, and this script may not work in every situation, for everything. It’s just a script, people. All scripts on this site are performed by a professional stunt driver on a closed course. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Offer good for a limited time only. • Process Improvement and the Data Professional

    - by BuckWoody
Don’t be afraid of that title – I’m not talking about Six Sigma or anything super-formal here. In many organizations, there are more folks in other IT roles than in the Data Professional area. In other words, there are more developers, system administrators and so on than there are the “DBA” role. That means we often have more to do than the time we need to do it. And, oddly enough, the first thing that is sacrificed is process improvement – the little things we need to do to make the day go faster in the first place. Then we get even more behind, the work piles up and…well, you know all about that. Earlier I challenged you to find 10-30 minutes a day to study. Some folks wrote back and asked “where do I start”? Well, why not be super-efficient and combine that time with learning how to make yourself more efficient? Try out a new scripting language, learn a new tool that automates things or find out ways others have automated their systems. In general, find out what you’re doing and how, and then see if that can be improved. It’s kind of like doing a performance tuning gig on yourself! If you’re pressed for time, look for bite-sized articles (like the ones I’ve done here for PowerShell and SQL Server) that you can follow in a “serial” fashion. In a short time you’ll have a new set of knowledge you can use to make your day faster. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • Get IP or MAC addresses of Windows Multipoint Server 2012 stations?

    - by user1454265
Is it possible to programmatically retrieve the IP or MAC address of a station assigned to a Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 host, using PowerShell or any other .NET or Windows API? Background: I'm developing a application to help set up USB-over-Ethernet zero clients in a WMS 2012 setup, bridging the PowerShell "WmsCmdlets" module (Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.MultipointServer.PowerShell.Commands.Library.WmsStation) and a third-party vendor API for configuring zero client IP address, etc. So far, I do not know any means of matching up the "stations" of the WmsCmdlets with the zero client objects in the vendor's API. Finding out the IP or MAC associated with a WMS station would do nicely, since I have this on the zero client API side. However, I haven't found any information I could use in the PowerShell WmsCmdlets module, such as Get-WmsStation which returns the following: Id : 1 Name : <my station name> IsAutoLogOn : False IsSplit : False CollabId : 0 RemoteConnectionServerName : VirtualMachineName : VirtualMachineId : AutoLogOnUserName : AutoLogOnPassword : DeviceTypes : {DT_Mouse, DT_Keyboard, DT_Audio, DT_MassStorage...} DeviceCounts : {2, 2, 0, 0...} ComputerName : <my WMS host server name> SessionId : 4294967295 SessionHostServer : <my WMS host server name>

  • Create new vms with a template with a csv. Possible?

    - by EdConde
I am new to Powershell and Powercli... but i manager few ESX environments and really would like to do as much as possible via powershell. I am trying to do as much as i can via Powershell. On with the help I need: I used this one liner to create VMs from templates. But the problem is there has to be some user input after each new VM is created. New-VM name -Template template -VMHost VMHost -Datastore Datastore What i would like to do is be able to import via CSV the name of the new vm, the template to use, the host to put the new vm and the datastore all from a CSV. I don't know if it is as easy as below, but i kept getting errors. Import-Csv "C:\powershell\Data\VM2Create.csv" | Foreach-object{ New-VM $.name -Template $.template -VMHost $.VMHost -Datastore $.Datastore} I know there some () or {} or possibly | that need... just don't know where to put them... The csv i think would look like this: name, template, vmhost, datastore Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated...

  • The best, in the West

    - by Fatherjack
As many of you know, I run the SQL South West user group and we are currently in full flow preparing to stage the UK’s second SQL Saturday. The SQL Saturday spotlight is going to fall on Exeter in March 2013. We have full-day session on Friday 8th with some truly amazing speakers giving their insights and experience into some vital areas of working with SQL Server: Dave Ballantyne and Dave Morrison – TSQL and internals Christian Bolton and Gavin Payne – Mission critical data platforms on Windows Server 2012 Denny Cherry – SQL Server Security André Kamman – Powershell 3.0 for SQL Server Administrators and Developers Mladen Prajdic – From SQL Traces to Extended Events – The next big switch. A number of people have claimed that the choice is too good and they’d have trouble selecting just one session to attend. I can see how this is a problem but hope that they make their minds up quickly. The venue is a bespoke conference suite in the centre of Exeter but has limited capacity so we are working on a first-come first-served basis. All the session details and booking and travel information can be found on our user group website. The Saturday will be a day of free, 50 minute sessions on all aspects SQL Server from almost 30 different speakers. If you would like to submit a session then get a move on as submissions close on 8th January 2013 (That’s less than a month away). We are really interested in getting new speakers started so we have a lightning talk session where you can come along and give a small talk (anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes long) about anything connected with SQL Server as a way to introduce you to what it’s like to be a speaker at an event. Details on registering to attend and to submit a session (Lightning talks need to be submitted too please) can be found on our SQL Saturday pages. This is going to be the biggest and best bespoke SQL Server conference to ever take place this far South West in the UK and we aim to give everyone who comes to either day a real experience of the South West so we have a few surprises for you on the day.

  • Error Using 32 vs. 64 bit SharePoint 2007 DLLs with PowerShell

    - by Brian Jackett
Next time you fire up PowerShell to work with the SharePoint API make sure you launch the proper bit version of PowerShell.  Last week I had an interesting error that led to this blog post.  Travel back in time a little bit with me to see where this 32 vs. 64 bit debate started. History     Ever since the first pre-beta bits of Office 2010 landed in my lap I have been questioning whether it’s better to run 32 or 64 bit applications on a 64 bit host operating system.  In relation to Office 2010 I heard a number of arguments for 32 bit including this link from the Office 2010 Engineering team.  Given my typical usage scenarios 32 bit seemed the way to go since I wasn’t a “super RAM hungry” Excel user or the like. The Problem     Since I had chosen 32 bit Office 2010, I tried to stick with 32 bit version of other programs that I run assuming the same benefits and rules applied to other applications.  This is where I was wrong.  Last week I was attempting to use 32 bit PowerShell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) on a 64 bit WSS 3.0 server.  When trying to reference the 64 bit SharePoint DLLs I got the following errors about not being able to find the web application.     I have run into these errors when I have hosts file issues or improper permissions to the farm / site collection but these were not the case.  After taking a quick spin around the interwebs I ran across the below forum post comment and another MSDN forum reply that explained the error.  Turns out that sometimes it’s not possible to run 32 bit applications against a 64 bit OS / farm / assembly / etc. …the problem could also be because your SharePoint is 64-Bit but your app is running in 32-bit mode     I quickly exited 32 bit PowerShell ISE and ran the same code under 64 bit PowerShell ISE.  All errors were gone and the script ran successfully.   Conclusion     The rules of 32 vs. 64 bit interoperability do not always apply evenly across all applications and scenarios.  In my case I wasn’t able to run 32 bit PowerShell against 64 bit SharePoint DLLs.  I’m updating all of my links and shortcuts to use 64 bit PowerShell where appropriate.  I’m quite surprised it has taken me this long to run into this error, but sometimes blind luck is all that keeps you from running into errors.  Lesson learned and hopefully this can benefit you as well.  Happy SharePointing all!         -Frog Out   Links http://blogs.technet.com/b/office2010/archive/2010/02/23/understanding-64-bit-office.aspx http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointdevelopment/thread/a732cb83-c2ef-4133-b04e-86477b72bbe3/ http://stackoverflow.com/questions/266255/filenotfoundexception-with-the-spsite-constructor-whats-the-problem

  • Using MVC2 to update an Entity Framework v4 object with foreign keys fails

    - by jbjon
With the following simple relational database structure: An Order has one or more OrderItems, and each OrderItem has one OrderItemStatus. Entity Framework v4 is used to communicate with the database and entities have been generated from this schema. The Entities connection happens to be called EnumTestEntities in the example. The trimmed down version of the Order Repository class looks like this: public class OrderRepository { private EnumTestEntities entities = new EnumTestEntities(); // Query Methods public Order Get(int id) { return entities.Orders.SingleOrDefault(d => d.OrderID == id); } // Persistence public void Save() { entities.SaveChanges(); } } An MVC2 app uses Entity Framework models to drive the views. I'm using the EditorFor feature of MVC2 to drive the Edit view. When it comes to POSTing back any changes to the model, the following code is called: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection formValues) { // Get the current Order out of the database by ID Order order = orderRepository.Get(id); var orderItems = order.OrderItems; try { // Update the Order from the values posted from the View UpdateModel(order, ""); // Without the ValueProvider suffix it does not attempt to update the order items UpdateModel(order.OrderItems, "OrderItems.OrderItems"); // All the Save() does is call SaveChanges() on the database context orderRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id = order.OrderID }); } catch (Exception e) { return View(order); // Inserted while debugging } } The second call to UpdateModel has a ValueProvider suffix which matches the auto-generated HTML input name prefixes that MVC2 has generated for the foreign key collection of OrderItems within the View. The call to SaveChanges() on the database context after updating the OrderItems collection of an Order using UpdateModel generates the following exception: "The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted." When debugging through this code, I can still see that the EntityKeys are not null and seem to be the same value as they should be. This still happens when you are not changing any of the extracted Order details from the database. Also the entity connection to the database doesn't change between the act of Getting and the SaveChanges so it doesn't appear to be a Context issue either. Any ideas what might be causing this problem? I know EF4 has done work on foreign key properties but can anyone shed any light on how to use EF4 and MVC2 to make things easy to update; rather than having to populate each property manually. I had hoped the simplicity of EditorFor and DisplayFor would also extend to Controllers updating data. Thanks

  • Example to get Facebook Events using sdk v4 from fan page into Wordpress site [on hold]

    - by Dorshin
Been trying to update to the new FB php sdk v4 for pulling events into my website, but having trouble finding how to do it. I want to pull public event information from a FB "page" using their fan page ID number. For example, a venue that has multiple events. What are the minimal classes I need to "require_once" and "use" to only pull the events (don't need to login)? The site is on Wordpress which doesn't use sessions, so what do I do with the "session_start()" statement? Will it work anyway? Could I get a basic code example of how to get the event info into an array? (I want to make sure I get the syntax correct) So far I've got the below code, but it is not working. session_start(); require_once( 'Facebook/GraphObject.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/GraphSessionInfo.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookSession.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookCurl.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookHttpable.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookCurlHttpClient.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookResponse.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookSDKException.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookRequestException.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookAuthorizationException.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookRequest.php' ); require_once( 'Facebook/FacebookRedirectLoginHelper.php' ); use Facebook\GraphSessionInfo; use Facebook\FacebookSession; use Facebook\FacebookCurl; use Facebook\FacebookHttpable; use Facebook\FacebookCurlHttpClient; use Facebook\FacebookResponse; use Facebook\FacebookAuthorizationException; use Facebook\FacebookRequestException; use Facebook\FacebookRequest; use Facebook\FacebookSDKException; use Facebook\FacebookRedirectLoginHelper; use Facebook\GraphObject; function facebook_event_function() { FacebookSession::setDefaultApplication('11111111111','00000000000000000'); /* make the API call */ $request = new FacebookRequest($session, '/{123456789}/events','GET'); $response = $request->execute(); $graphObject = $response->getGraphObject(); } So far, not getting anything in the $graphObject and it's throwing this error as well: PHP Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Facebook\FacebookAuthorizationException' with message '(#803) Some of the aliases you requested do not exist: v2.0GET' in ../Facebook/FacebookRequestException.php:134 After I get something in the $graphObject, I want to add the info to a DB table. This part I am OK on. Thank you for the help.

  • Copying files within a Workgroup

    - by Andrew La Grange
I have three boxes operating in a Windows Server workgroup within a closed network. (No Domain / No AD) There are several derivations of the scenario that I'm about to outline, but I'm sure I will be able to retool the solution as and when I need. Essentially the boxes are: 2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard 1 x Windows Server 2000 Standard I need to be able to schedule the copying/and-or/moving of files from various directories and each of the boxes. Each box has a different username and password for the administrator. I have PowerShell 2.0 on the two Win2K8 boxes (obviously). Previously I have used mapped network drives to copy the files, and cmd line batches, but I'd much rather use Powershell if possible (with Shares and/or $ notation). However the Copy-Item cmdlet doesn't seem to be processing the Credential correctly. Perhaps some Powershell gurus out there might be able to help me. Essentially I'd like to schedule a PS run of script to push backup files onto my WIn2k box (old fileserver) periodically.

  • getting started automating virtualization with powershell on windows

    - by fschwiet
What are some good books or resources for learning automate virtual PCs on Windows DataCenter? I want to be able to build VPCs with both automated installs and from images, preferably via powershell. I would like to be able to setup an IIS environment for automated testing, and configure end user installs of different versions of Windows. I am not interested in corpnet type scenarios (active directory, domains, etc) so much for now. I'm comfortable with powershell and programming in general. I haven't yet installed Windows DataCenter, maybe once I install it will be clear enough. But looking for resources on how to managed virtual PCs programmatically I haven't found anything.

This was working before, now all of a sudden it does not. I've tried some things below, but I still had no success: Delete all bin files in every project in my solution, clean solution, re-build solution. Build projects in solution indivdualy Restart machine It an ASP.NET C# application consuming a WCF sevice locally. It is in debug mode. I have a breakpoint set on the page consuming the service. The breakpoint hits, but it will not step into the service code. The ASP.NET site and the service code is all in the same solution. This all of a sudden does not work, it did work before. How can I fix this problem? Adding a breakpoint to the service project I get a warning: Breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document. I deleted all the bin folders for all the projects and re-built them one by one. They all succeeded, but still I am getting the symbols won't load on any breakpoint I put into any project in the solution other than the ASP.NET project where the breakpoint works. I was able to debug step into all the projects before, this is an all of a sudden thing. Information from the output window.. • vista wireless adapter not working

    - by Sam Adams
After this script gets called http://blogs.technet.com/b/heyscriptingguy/archive/2008/09/29/how-can-i-enable-or-disable-my-network-adapter.aspx 50 times over a 12 hour span, disabling wireless/enabling wired, followed by enabling wireless/disabling wired, the wireless adapter stops finding connections entirely, even if it is enabled, needing a reboot. vista, powershell 1.0 (for some reason vista is not accepting powershell 2 for an update), 32 bit, intel R pro /wireless 3945ABG adapter. Any reasons why, thanks.
