Passing Derived Class Instances as void* to Generic Callbacks in C++

This is a bit of an involved problem, so I'll do the best I can to explain what's going on. If I miss something, please tell me so I can clarify. We have a callback system where on one side a module or application provides a "Service" and clients can perform actions with this Service (A very rudimentary IPC, basically). For future reference let's say we have some definitions like so: typedef int (*callback)(void*); // This is NOT in our code, but makes explaining easier. installCallback(string serviceName, callback cb); // Really handled by a proper management system sendMessage(string serviceName, void* arg); // arg = value to pass to callback This works fine for basic types such as structs or builtins. We have an MI structure a bit like this: Device <- Disk <- MyDiskProvider class Disk : public virtual Device class MyDiskProvider : public Disk The provider may be anything from a hardware driver to a bit of glue that handles disk images. The point is that classes inherit Disk. We have a "service" which is to be notified of all new Disks in the system, and this is where things unravel: void diskHandler(void *p) { Disk *pDisk = reinterpret_cast<Disk*>(p); // Uh oh! // Remainder is not important } SomeDiskProvider::initialise() { // Probe hardware, whatever... // Tell the disk system we're here! sendMessage("disk-handler", reinterpret_cast<void*>(this)); // Uh oh! } The problem is, SomeDiskProvider inherits Disk, but the callback handler can't receive that type (as the callback function pointer must be generic). Could RTTI and templates help here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Qt 101: Why can't I use this class?

I have experience with C++ but I've never really used Qt before. I'm trying to connect to a SQLite database, so I found a tutorial here and am going with that. In the QtCreator IDE, I went to Add New -- C++ Class and in the header file pasted in the header the header from that link and in the .cpp file I pasted the source. My main.cpp looks like this: #include <QtGui/QApplication> #include "mainwindow.h" #include "databasemanager.h" #include <qlabel.h> int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { QApplication a(argc, argv); MainWindow w; w.show(); DatabaseManager db(); QLabel hello("nothing..."); if(db.openDB()){ hello.setText("Win!"); } else{ hello.setText("Lame!"); } hello.resize(100, 30); hello.show(); return a.exec(); } And I'm getting this error: main.cpp:13: error: request for member 'openDB' in 'db', which is of non-class type 'DatabaseManager()' Can anyone point me in the right direction? I know "copypaste" code isn't good, I just wanted to see if I could get DB connectivity working and I figured something like this would be simple... thanks for the help.

Unmanaged DLL (exporting Dialog) + Class Library (DLL) + no Windows Style/Themes

Hi, I have a managed application TestApplication.exe in C# and Application.EnableVisualStyles() is allready called. I have a Class Library MySharedCode.dll also in C# which uses [DLLImport()] to import some External dialogs out of an unmanaged dll. Well, now I am using (add reference) MySharedCode.dll in my TestApplication.exe and call a function MyTestConfigDlg() out of it. TestClass.MyTestConfigDlg(); OK, everything works fine and I get my dialog, but the dialog has NO XP style/themes? I just wanted to see if it's general problem with managed/unmanged modules, so I used the [DLLImport()] to call the same MyTestConfigDlg() dialog but this time directly in my TestApplication.exe! WOW! Worked as I expected. The Dialog was in XP Style/Themes! so, anybody here who can help me out? FYI: I also tried (just for test) to call MessageBoxA() API call in my Class Library Dll which later called by my TestApplication.exe and the MessageBoxA() had also no Style/Themes! Thanks in advance!

Trying to output a list using class

Am trying to get the moving average of a price..but i keep getting an attribute error in my Moving_Average class. ('Moving_Average' object has no attribute 'days'). I have an scenario as the following: @Entity @Table(name = "ANIMAL") @Inheritance(strategy = InheritanceType.JOINED) public class Animal implements Serializable { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator = "S_ANIMAL") @SequenceGenerator(name = "S_ANIMAL", sequenceName = "S_ANIMAL", allocationSize = 1) public int getNumero() { return numero; } public void setNumero(int numero) { this.numero = numero; } . . . } and as the subclass: @Entity @Table(name = "DOG") public class Dog extends Animal { private static final long serialVersionUID = -7341592543130659641L; . . . } I have a JPA Select statement like this: SELECT a FROM Animal a; I'm using Hibernate 3.3.1 As I can see the framework retrieves instances of Animal and also of Dog using a left outer join. Is there a way to Select only the "part" Animal? I mean, the previous Select will get all the Animals, those that are only Animals but not Dogs and those that are Dogs. I want them all, but in the case of Dogs I want to only retrieve the "Animal part" of them. I found the @org.hibernate.annotations.Entity(polymorphism = PolymorphismType.EXPLICIT) but as I could see this only works if Animal isn't an @Entity. Thanks a lot.

A public struct inside a class

I tried this: foo->emotion.fear = 5; But GCC gives me this compile error: error: base operand of '-' has non-pointer type 'Human' This: foo.emotion.fear = 5; Gives: error: 'struct Creature::emotion' is inaccessible error: within this context error: invalid use of 'struct Creature::emotion' Can anyone help me? java class that simulates a simple database table

I have a collection of heterogenous data that I pull from a database table mtable. Then, for every unique value uv in column A, I compute a function of (SELECT * FROM mtable WHERE A=uv). Then I do the same for column B, and column C. There are rather a lot of unique values, so I don't want to hit the db repeatedly - I would rather have a class that replicates some of the functionality (most importantly some version of SELECT WHERE). Additionally, I would like to abstract the column names away from the class definition, if that makes any sense - the constructor should take a list of names as a parameter, and also, I suppose, a list of types (right now this is just a String[], which seems hacky). I'm getting the initial data from a RowSet. I've more or less done this by using a hashmap that maps Strings to lists/arrays of Objects, but I keep getting bogged down in comparisons and types, and am thinking that my current implementation really isn't as clean and clear as it could be. I'm pretty new to java, also, and am not sure if I'm not going down a completely incorrect path. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Car Class (first time with classes)

For an assignment I needed to use a class named car and have it display the make and model, and also have the speed increase by 5 when you use accelerate and decrease by 5 when you brake. My teacher helped me along the way but when I got to the end I couldn't get it to run. Could someone correct me and tell my why it's wrong? Using Private Extension Galleries in Visual Studio 2012

Microsoft releases new cool features in the form of extensions and the list of 3rd party extensions that plug into Visual Studio just keeps growing. One of the nice things about the VSIX extensions is how they are deployed. Microsoft hosts a public Visual Studio Gallery where you can upload extensions and make them available to the rest of the community. Visual Studio checks for updates to the installed extensions when you start Visual Studio, and installing/updating the extensions is fast since it is only a matter of extracting the files within the VSIX package to the local extension folder. But for custom, enterprise-specific extensions, you don’t want to publish them online to the whole world, but you still want an easy way to distribute them to your developers and partners. This is where Private Extension Galleries come into play. In Visual Studio 2012, it is now possible to add custom extensions galleries that can point to any URL, as long as that URL returns the expected content of course (see below).Registering a new gallery in Visual Studio is easy, but there is very little documentation on how to actually host the gallery. Visual Studio galleries uses Atom Feed XML as the protocol for delivering new and updated versions of the extensions. This MSDN page describes how to create a static XML file that returns the information about your extensions. This approach works, but require manual updates of that file every time you want to deploy an update of the extension. Wouldn’t it be nice with a web service that takes care of this for you, that just lets you drop a new version of your VSIX file and have it automatically detect the new version and produce the correct Atom Feed XML? Well search no more, this is exactly what the Inmeta Visual Studio Gallery Service does for you :-) Here you can see that in addition to the standard Online galleries there is an Inmeta Gallery that contains two extensions (our WIX templates and our custom TFS Checkin Policies). These can be installed/updated i the same way as extensions from the public Visual Studio Gallery. Installing the Service Download the installler (Inmeta.VSGalleryService.Install.msi) for the service and run it. The installation is straight forward, just select web site, application pool and (optional) a virtual directory where you want to install the service. Note: If you want to run it in the web site root, just leave the application name blank Press Next and finish the installer. Open web.config in a text editor and locate the the <applicationSettings> element Edit the following setting values: FeedTitle This is the name that is shown if you browse to the service using a browser. Not used by Visual Studio BaseURI When Visual Studio downloads the extension, it will be given this URI + the name of the extension that you selected. This value should be on the following format: http://SERVER/[VDIR]/gallery/extension/ VSIXAbsolutePath This is the path where you will deploy your extensions. This can be a local folder or a remote share. You just need to make sure that the application pool identity account has read permissions in this folder Save web.config to finish the installation Open a browser and enter the URL to the service. It should show an empty Feed page: Adding the Private Gallery in Visual Studio 2012 Now you need to add the gallery in Visual Studio. This is very easy and is done as follows: Go to Tools –> Options and select Environment –> Extensions and Updates Press Add to add a new gallery Enter a descriptive name, and add the URL that points to the web site/virtual directory where you installed the service in the previous step Press OK to save the settings. Deploying an Extension This one is easy: Just drop the file in the designated folder! :-) If it is a new version of an existing extension, the developers will be notified in the same way as for extensions from the public Visual Studio gallery: I hope that you will find this sever useful, please contact me if you have questions or suggestions for improvements!

jquery .hide() bug in safari

ive been having issues with this hide bug thats only affecting safari. This is a simple vertical scroller that hides the first element in the list then shows the last. and works in everything apart from safari. the problem seems to be that the divs im working with here share the same class but have unique ids like #mycollectioncomment1, #mycollectioncomment2, #mycollectioncomment3 etc... however hiding just one of these divs hides all the other divs that share the same class. Add child to scene from within a class.

Hi, I'm new to flash in general and have been writing a program with two classes that extend MovieClip (Stems and Star). I need to create a new Stems object as a child of the scene when the user stops dragging a Star object, but do not know how to reference the scene from within the Star class's code. I've tried passing the scene into the constructor of the Star and doing sometihng like: this.scene.addChild (new Stems ()); But apparently that's not how to do it... How to implement a private virtual function within derived classes?

Hi, I know why I want to use private virtual functions, but how exactly can I implement them? For example: class Base{ [...] private: virtual void func() = 0; [...] } class Derived1: puplic Base{ void func() { //short implementation is ok here } } class Derived2: puplic Base{ void func(); //long implementation elsewhere (in cpp file) } [...] void Derived2::func() { //long implementation } The first version is ok but not always possible. Isn't the second version simply name hiding? How do you define the Base::func() of Derived2, if you cannot do it within the class declaration of Dereived2? Thanks

opendkim reporting read private key failed: no start line

I've set up keys with the following: opendkim-genkey -t -s mail -d test.com The private key (pertinent to this question) contains: -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- (some stuff here) -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----- My opendkim.conf contains: Domain test.com KeyFile /etc/opendkim/dkim.private Selector mail I am then testing with: opendkim-testkey -d test.com -s mail -k /etc/mail/dkim.public Yet receive the following error: opendkim-testkey: PEM_read_bio_PrivateKey() failed error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:no start line The files exist and have opendkim as the user and group, and adequate permissions. Has anyone any advice?

calling constructor of the class in the destructor of the same class

Experts !! I know this question is one of the lousy one , but still I dared to open my mind , hoping I would learn from all. I was trying some examples as part of my routine and did this horrible thing, I called the constructor of the class from destructor of the same class. I don't really know if this is ever required in real programming , I cant think of any real time scenarios where we really need to call functions/CTOR in our destructor. Usually , destructor is meant for cleaning up. If my understanding is correct, why the compiler doesn't complain ? Is this because it is valid for some good reasons ? If so what are they ? Call from a singleton class to a function which in turn calls that class's method

Hello, I am still looking for a way to phrase it properly (I'm not a native speaker...). So I have this class SQL which implements the singleton pattern (for obvious reasons) and I also have this function, checkUsr(), which queries the database using one of SQL's methods. Everything works fine as long as I don't call checkUsr() from within the SQL class. When I do so, the scripts just exits and a blank page is displayed - no errors are returned, no exception is thrown... What's happening? And how do I work around this problem? How to set x509 Certificate private key access rights for AppPoolIdentity

If your website uses the AppPoolIdentity and requires access to the private key of an x509Certficate, you’ll need to grant the read permissions to the iis application pool. To grant permissions to the AppPoolIdentity: Run Certificates.MMC (or Start->run->mmc.exe, Add Certificate Snap-In for LocalMachine) Select the certificate (Personal node on the certificate tree) , right click and Manage Permissions. Add a new user to the permissions list. Enter "IIS AppPool\AppPoolName" on the local machine". Replace "AppPoolName" with the name of your application pool.

Runescape Private Server - How does it work?

I've seen a lot of Runescape private servers lately. How do they work? Most of them are based on the old Runescape, but a few look exactly like the real Runescape. How do they make the servers? Has the source code of the game been leaked on several occasions, and is that used to make Runescape servers? Or have some people just replicated Runescape, and tried to make the same game themselves (and "stolen" the 3D objects and texture from Jagex to make it look the same, and written the code to be able to replicate most functions of Runescape)?

I can believe that lead developers have them, but thats normally just one person in your average office. If it would not be to much to ask: Do you work in a totally awesome office or a nasty old cube? (or somewhere in between) What's your relative rank in the office? (junior, programmer II, senior, lead, etc.) are you doing internal software, or are you in a software-centric environment? (the general thought seems to be that internal developers get cubes while others live in "Joel-Spolsky-Programmer-Candyland")

Do private collaboration platform really need private file access?

I need to make private collaboration platform, where the website is not open to public registration, and all the posts is only accessible by the members. The members is management team of a company. Along with many features, it has Announcement. When posting Announcement, it has option to upload images. I personally like it public, because the file transfer faster and can be easily integrated with CDN. I just wonder whether I need to make the image public, or only accessible by the members.
