  • Dual monitor gnome-shell broke itself

    Ok, lets get this over with. I have a dual-monitor, ati setup on gnome-shell that was just fine until this morning. Then, this happened. Look closer... Whatever has happened to my ubuntu setup? My second monitor still works, entirely normally, with the exception that I cannot (obviously) access activities (as i am in gnome-fallback ). I do wish to resume my work... EDIT: By entirely normally, I mean I can move my mouse over it and have seperate windows on it and stuff. It's not mirroring. UPDATE: Unity works entirely normally.

  • How do I clear all gnome shell notifications?

    I use Jupiter as a power manager. Now I get a good number of notifications from it. I do not have problem with the fact that I get all these notifications. I do however, want to be able to clear all gnome shell notifications with a few clicks. Currently, my entire bottom edge of the screen is filled with notifications and I do not wish to clear each item one by one. So my question is, how do I clear these notifications? If this is not possible in the ui, is it possible to write an extension to do it? Where should I suggest this feature to gnome developers? Gnome forums are almost dead now, the administrator has not activated my created account since 5 days!

  • gnome shell with very high CPU usage

    i'm running ubuntu gnome 13.10 on my dell latiude e6510 with a i5 m560. The I5 comes with a embedded Intel HD 3400 Graphics. The average cpu usage of the gnome-shell is by 160% it's to high, I think. Is there a problem with a driver? If i call the command glxinfo | grep OpenGL it returns: OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits) OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.2.1 OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30 OpenGL extensions: Greetings

  • Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

    I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.   • Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome 3 shell doesn't have the Activities menu or launcher

    I installed it from apt-get and it only has Applications and Places instead of the Activities menu, it also doesn't have the dock or launcher. Using the super key does nothing, as neither does mousing to the upper left corner. I have also installed the tweak tool, but it looks like all the settings are not being applied to the UI. Am I missing something. I have never used Gnome 3 before as I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10.4, which I believe was Gnome 2 for the shell. I have been reading the documentation on the Gnome site and it says there should be an Activity menu and other items that aren't there. Thanks

  • Custom daemon script: works, but does not run at boot / startup

    this is Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. I have the following shell script in init.d that I want to run as a "daemon" (background service with start/stop/restart really) at system startup. There is a symlink in rc3.d. I tried 4 and 5 too. (Ideally this would initialize before graphical login happens and before a user logs in.) IMPORTANT: the script works 100% as expected and required when testing this with service MetaLeapDaemon start and service MetaLeapDaemon stop. (This shell script calls a Python program which makes sure the appropriate .pid files are both created at startup and deleted at exit.) So generally it works fine but now my only issue is why it will not be run at any of the run-levels I tried. I know for sure it isn't run because the log file it normally creates does not get created. As you can see (by the lack of any uid:gid args in the start-stop-daemon commands) this would currently run only under root, is this forbidden in a default setup?   • MSBuild cannot find SGen when compiling a solution

    I've looked at several other SGen-related questions on here and either their answers don't apply or their answers don't fix this for me. I have installed several SDKs to fix this issue with no luck. Reference types should not be changed since this is the only place this is a problem. Once suggestion is to put SGen.exe into the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5 folder, but that's not been done on the box where this is not a problem. In this scenario, SGen.exe actually exists and is right where it's supposed to be, but MSBuild still is having issues with finding it for some reason! Background: We have a NAnt script that automates our builds. In this scenario, NAnt is calling MSBuild and MSBuild is generating the error claiming to be unable to find SGen. The project is .NET 3.5-based. I have my primary dev environment (64-bit Vista Ultimate) where the script works perfectly and I am attempting to duplicate it in a VM (64-bit Win 7 Ultimate). I THINK I have everything to the point where I should be good-to-go but this fails on the Win7 box (works perfectly on the Vista box). I have done some comparisons between the two boxes and they both look identical in this regard, but it still fails. For example, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework's sdkInstallRootv2.0 value is set to C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v2.0 64bit\ on both machines. In both machines, SGen.exe is in that path's bin subdirectory.   • Setting classpath java for use in Runtime.exec

    I am trying to spawn a process using Runtime.exec. I want to use my current classpath : System.getProperty("java.class.path") Unfortunately, I am having all kinds of issues. When it works on my mac, it doesn't work on Windows. And doesn't work on my mac ever when there is a space in the classpath. If i remove Hello() from Generate method in file2.py then its work fine. I cant use import file2.py in file1.py,because in file2.py the only one method name (Generate) is fix (its taken as requirement). So apart from Genarate method user can define any method and can call this in generate method, because this approach is not working so i have to write whole code into generate method only and code is also repetitive. Any help is really appreciable...

  • Securely using exec with PHP to run ffmpeg

    I would like to run ffmpeg from PHP for video encoding purposes. I was thinking of using the exec or passthru commands. However, I have been warned that enabling these functions is a security risk. In the words of my support staff: The directive 'disable_functions' is used to disable any functions that allow the execution of system commands. This is for more security of the server. These PHP functions can be used to crack the server if not used properly. I'm guessing that if exec is enabled, then someone could (possibly) execute an arbitrary unix command. Does anyone know of a secure way to run ffmpeg from PHP? By the way, I'm on a dedicated server. Thanks ahead of time!

    I have a PHP script which calls another script in order to add IP addresses to a whitelist. I sometimes want to whitelist all addresses, in which case I have it call exec("otherscript *.*.*.*", output, retval); This worked fine, adding the string "*.*.*.*" to the whitelist until I happened to have another file in the directory of the php script that matched that pattern ("foo.1.tar.gz"), at which point the wildcards were expanded, and I ended up with the filename in my whitelist. Is there some way to disable globbing in php's exec? It isn't mentioned in the PHP docs as far as I can tell.

  • How can I run a Perl program when I don't have ssh or shell access?

    I just installed an IRC bot, B****X (Don't ask, I don't know - the real name is not censored). I did all of the configuration and chmod'ed the pl files to 755, but running it won't work. My host does not allow SSH/Shell (which is how the documentation says to runs he script), but just going to the URL usually works because of this. However, I get a 500 (Internal Server Error) error. Basically like this: git clone [email protected]:TheUser/TheProject.git -key "/home/christoffer/ssh_keys/theuser" Or even better (in Ruby): with_key("/home/christoffer/ssh_keys/theuser") do sh("git clone [email protected]:TheUser/TheProject.git") end I have seen examples of connecting to a remote server with Net::SSH that uses a specified private key, but this is a local command.   • Using cp command in linux shell, how do I copy a whole directory into another directory?

    I have a directory, let's say, "work": ~/work/ This directory has some sub-folders (d1, d2...) in it and files in these sub-folders. I want to make a backup copy in the same folder, so it would be like: ~/backup/work/ However, when I use cp -r ./work ./backup the folder "work" is not copied, only its subfoders (so now it's ~/backup/d1 ~/backup/d2...) Any idea how to make it work? I'm quite new to shell, so I'm missing something :)
