  • What is the correct UI interface to learn for creating Windows phone 8 apps? [closed]

    - by Robert Oschler
I am a veteran Delphi 6 programmer transitioning to C# development. My first project is a open source library that will have a minimal user interface since it is meant to be used as a Component primarily on desktop PCs running Visual Studio. My next project is going to be a Windows 8 phone app and I intend for that platform to be my primary focus for future C# development, not the desktop. My concern is that I waste as little time as possible learning a presentation framework that will benefit or distract me from writing Windows 8 phone apps. The plethora of framework names I have already encountered include, WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Framework), Silverlight, Silverlight Mobile, Metro and there may be others. Given my goal outlined in the first paragraph above, I have a few questions: 1) Which of the frameworks should I use for the small amount of UI work I will do with the desktop Component project that will help me the most, or hurt me the least, when I move to Windows 8 phone app development? 2) Which is the correct framework to study for developing Windows 8 phone apps? 3) Any awesome tutorials, resources or books you have run into targeted towards veteran programmers from other platforms? I read about the Portable Library Tools on this Stack Overflow thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5522355/windows-phone-7-wpf-sharing-a-codebase But the reply by Simon Guindon seemed to indicate to me that it's not the best solution for writing a competitive Windows 8 phone app.

  • Another big year for the ADF EMG at OOW12

    - by Chris Muir
Oracle Open World 2012 has only just started, but in one way it's just finished!  All the ADF EMG's OOW content is over for another year! The unique highlight this year for me was the first ever ADF EMG social night held on Saturday, where I finally had the chance to meet so many ADF community members who I've known over the internet, but never met in person.  What?  You didn't get an invite?  Oh well, better luck next year ;-) Seriously our budget was limited, so in the happy-dictatorship sort of way I had to limit RSVPs to just 40 people.  Hopefully next year we can do something bigger and better for the wider community. Following directly on from the Saturday social night the ADF EMG ran a full day of sessions at the user group Sunday.  I wont go over the content again, but to say thank you very much to all our presenters and helpers, including Gert Poel, Pitier Gillis, Aino Andriessen, Simon Haslam, Ken Mizuta, Lucas Jellema and the FMW roadshow team, Ronald van Luttikhuizen, Guido Schmutz, Luc Bors, Aino Andriessen and Lonneke Dikmans. Also special thanks must go to Doug Cockroft and Bambi Price for their time and effort in organizing the ADF EMG room behind the scenes via the APOUC. To be blunt Doug and Bambi really do deserve serious thanks because they had to wear a lot of Oracle politics behind the scenes to get the rooms organized (oh, and deal with me fretting too! ;-). Finally thanks to all the members and OOW delegates for turning up and supporting the group on the day.  In the end the ADF EMG exists for you, and I hope you found it worthwhile. Onto 2013 (oh, and the rest of OOW12 ;-)

  • log-back and thirdparty writing to stdout. How to stop them getting interleaved.

    - by David Roussel
First some background. I have a batch-type java process run from a DOS batch script. All the java logging goes to stdout, and the batch script redirects the stdout to a file. (This is good for me because I can ECHO from the script and it gets into the log file, so I can see all the java JVM command line args, which is great for debugging.) I may not I use slf4j API, and for the backend I used to use log4j, but recently switched to logback-classic. Although all my application code uses slf4j, I have a third party library that does it's own logging (not using a standard API) which also gets written to stdout. The problem is that sometimes log lines get mixed up and don't cleanly appear on separate lines. Here is an example of some messed up output: 2010-05-28 18:00:44.783 [thread-1 ] INFO CreditCorrelationElementBuilderImpl - Bump parameters exist for scenario, now attempting bumping. [indexDisplayName=STANDARD_S1_v300] 2010-05-28 18:01:43.517 [thread-1 ] INFO CreditCorrelationElementBuilderImpl - Found adjusted point in data, now applying bump. [point=0.144040000000000] 2010-05-28 18:01:58.642 [thread-1 ] DEBUG com.company.request.Request - Generated request for [dealName=XXX_20050225_01[5],dealType=GENERIC_XXX,correlationType=2,copulaType=1] in 73.8 s, Simon Stopwatch: [sys1.batchpricer.reqgen.gen INHERIT] total 1049 s, counter 24, max 74.1 s, min 212 ms 2010-05-28 18:05/28/10 18:02:20.236 INFO: [ServiceEvent] SubmittedTask:BC-STRESS_04_FZBC-2010-05-21-545024448189310126-23 01:58.658 [req-writer-2b ] INFO .c.g.r.o.OptionalFileDocumentOutput - Writing request XML to \\filserver\dir\file1.xml - write time: 21.4 ms - Simon Stopwatch: [sys1.batchpricer.reqgen.writeinputfile INHERIT] total 905 ms, counter 24, max 109 ms, min 10.8 ms 2010-05-28 18:02:33.626 [ResponseCallbacks-1: DriverJobSpace$TakeJobRunner$1] ERROR c.c.s.s.D.CalculatorCallback - Id:23 no deal found !! 2010-0505/28/10 18:02:50.267 INFO: [ServiceEvent] CompletedTask:BC-STRESS_04_FZBC-2010-05-21-545024448189310126-23:Total:24 Now comparing back to older log files, it seems the problem didn't occur when using log4j as the logging backend. So logback must be doing something different. The problem seems to be that although PrintStream.write(byte buf[], int off, int len) is synchronized, however I can see in ch.qos.logback.core.joran.spi.ConsoleTarget that System.out.write(int b) is the only write method called. So inbetween logback outputting each byte, the thirdparty library is managing to write a whole string to the stdout. (Not only is this cause me a problem, but it must also be a little inefficient?) Is there any other fix to this interleaving problem than patching the code to ConsoleTarget so it implments the other write methods? Any nice work arounds. Or should I just file a bug report? Here is my logback.xml: <configuration> <appender name="STDOUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender"> <encoder> <pattern>%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.SSS} [%-16thread] %-5level %-35.35logger{30} - %msg%n</pattern> </encoder> </appender> <root level="DEBUG"> <appender-ref ref="STDOUT" /> </root> </configuration> I'm using logback 0.9.20 with java 1.6.0_07.

  • DevWeek & SQL Social @ London

    - by Davide Mauri
Yesterday I had my “SQL Server best practices for developers” session at DevWeek and I really enjoyed it a lot. For all those who asked, I’ll put slides and demos online as soon as possible. I’ve just waiting to know where I can put it (on my website or somewhere else), so it should be just a matter of some days. If you attended my session and would like to rate it, please use SpeakerRate here: http://speakerrate.com/talks/2857-sql-server-best-practices-for-developers I also have to thank Simon Sabin for the very nice event he organized for SQLSocial http://sqlblogcasts.com/blogs/simons/archive/2010/02/16/SQLSocial-presents-Itzik-Ben-gan--Greg-Low-and-Davide-Mauri.aspx A lot of people attended and we really had interesting discussions. And it was my first time doing a session at a pub, and I must say it's *really* funny and enjoyable, expecially when you have free beer :-) Now back to Italy to the “usual” work! • How to throttle login attemps in Java webapp?

    - by Jörn Zaefferer
I want to implement an efficient mechanism to throttle login attemps in my Java web application, to prevent brute-force attacks on user accounts. Jeff explained the why, but not the how. Simon Willison showed an implementation in Python for Django: That doesn't really help me along as I can't use memcached nor Django. Porting his ideas from scratch doesn't seem like a great either - I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I found one Java implementation, though it seems rather naiive: Instead of a LRU cache, it just clears all entries after 15 minutes. EHCache could be an alternative for memcached, but I don't have any experience with it and don't really want to intoduce yet another technology if there are better alternatives for this task. So, whats a good way to implement login throttling in Java?

  • TextMate can't find my RSpec gem in opt (from macports)

    - by sbwoodside
I know I've had this problem before so I'm really frustrated. I've got the Ruby RSpec bundle installed for TextMate, but when I Run Behaviour Description or Run Focused Example I get this wonderful error: /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:827: in `report_activate_error': Could not find RubyGem rspec (>= 1.1.0) (Gem::LoadError) from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rubygems.rb:261: in `activate' from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby /1.8/rubygems.rb:68:in `gem' from /Users/simon/Library/Application Support/TextMate/Bundles/Ruby RSpec.tmbundle/Support/lib/spec_mate.rb:13 from /tmp/temp_textmate.oWRPUR:3:in `require' from /tmp/temp_textmate.oWRPUR:3 (I added linebreaks to make it readable) I'm using macports so my rspec gem is installed in /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/. Why isn't it finding it? In Preferences Advanced Shell Variables my TM_RUBY is set to /opt/local/bin/ruby. I also tried the trick here: http://dnite.org/2007/8/28/textmate-and-your-environment-variables/ ... which didn't do anything.

  • What kind of knowledge do you need to invent a new programming language?

    - by systempuntoout
I just finished to read "Coders at works", a brilliant book by Peter Seibel with 15 interviews to some of the most interesting computer programmers alive today. Well, many of the interviewees have (co)invented\implemented a new programming language. Some examples: Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang L. Peter Deutsch: implementer of Smalltalk-80 Brendan Eich: Inventor of JavaScript Dan Ingalls: Smalltalk implementor and designer Simon Peyton Jones: Coinventor of Haskell Guy Steele: Coinventor of Scheme Is out of any doubt that their minds have something special and unreachable, and i'm not crazy to think i will ever able to create a new language; i'm just interested in this topic. So, imagine a funny\grotesque scenario where your crazy boss one day will come to your desk to say "i want a new programming language with my name on it..take the time you need and do it", which is the right approach to studying this fascinating\intimidating\magic topic? What kind of knowledge do you need to model, design and implement a brand new programming language?

  • Interface Builder only allows one button to be "touchable"

    - by STLMikey
I'm making a clone of the classic game simon, the memory matching game. My (iPad) app will load fine, i tap start, the game screen loads, and only one of my four buttons will respond to touch commands. To troubleshoot, I tried creating a second unrelated nib and just populating it with four buttons not linked to anything. However, only one of those four buttons would respond to touch! There are no IBActions being called, nothing. Both the view itself, and all four buttons are touch enabled in the inspector...I'm stumped. I'm moreso asking if anyone has encountered anything simillar, as I'd rather not burden potential help with app-specific questions if it's avoidable. Thank you!

Hi, I have those two tables: client: id (int) #PK name (varchar) client_category: id (int) #PK client_id (int) category (int) Let's say I have those datas: client: {(1, "JP"), (2, "Simon")} client_category: {(1, 1, 1), (2, 1, 2), (3, 1, 3), (4,2,2)} tl;dr client #1 has category 1, 2, 3 and client #2 has only category 2 I am trying to build a query that would allow me to search multiple categories. For example, I would like to search every clients that has at least category 1 and 2 (would return client #1). How can I achieve that? Thanks!

  • C# Keeping DLLs with the associated library

    - by SimonN
We have a library built on the back of eldos' Secure Black Box. We use copy local to ensure that the appropriate runtime DLLs are included. If we now reference our library in another project with a copy local our library is copied into the bin folder of our main project but the Eldos SBB libraries aren't. We could reference SBB in the main project but there are no direct calls to SBB so any time the code is refactored the references may be removed as unused. What is the best way of handling this issue? Simon

  • Is sending a PDF as encoded byte array in XML sensible

    - by simonjwoods
Hi I am looking to return a PDF from a webservice call. (ATM, a custom proxy is required at the client-side) AFAICS, there are 2 ways of doing it a) Return the link to a web-accessible location b) Encode the PDF and include it in the XML In my circumstance, a) will require 2 trips from the client, the first to get the path and the second to get the file. However, wrt b), this link (http://www.coderanch.com/t/279020/Streams/java/wrting-bytearray-xml-file#1283263) suggests that it isn't a good idea to encode a PDF, though without explanation. I'd be grateful if someone would offer recommendations of the above (and potentially, other alternatives). Many thx Simon

  • JavaScript, transform object into array

    - by Šime Vidas
I've got an object: var obj = { "Mike": 24, "Peter": 23, "Simon": 33, "Tom": 12, "Frank": 31 }; I want to create an array that holds the values of the object. The keys (key names) can be disregarded: [24, 23, 33, 12, 31] The order of the values is NOT important! One solution (obviously) would be do have a function that takes the values and puts them into an array: var arr = valuesToArray(obj); I will accept such a function as the answer. However, I would be more pleased if there would be an API function (ECMAScript, jQuery, browser-specific, ...) that could do this. Is there such a thing?

  • RemoteWebDriver InternetExplorer navigate().to() timeout?

    - by the qwerty
i was running a test remotely on internet explorer, and when using navigate().to() selenium returns me this: "12:13:58.770 INFO - WebDriver remote server: Exception: The driver reported that the command timed out. There may be several reasons for this. Check that the destinationsite is in IE's 'Trusted Sites' (accessed from Tools-Internet Options in the 'Security' tab) If it is a trusted site, then the request may have taken more thana minute to finish." i've done what's said. but when looking at the browsers the page is loaded, but still this message continues. i've already tried as simon told me: "(16:32:54) simonstewart: ponto: http://code.google.com/p/selenium/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#Q:_The_does_not_work_well_on_Vista._How_do_I_get_it_to_work_as_e " but did not solve. could it be google analytics that on the background is getting data or something like that? ps: i ran the test on firefox and it works well. i've tried on Windows 7 and Windows XP, and Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8.

  • Android: Scrollable (bitmap) screen

    - by somin
I am currently implementing a view in Android that involves using a larger than the screen size bitmap as a background and then having drawables drawn ontop of this. This is so as to simulate a "map" that can be scrolled horizontally aswell as vertically. Which is done by using a canvas and then drawing to this the full "map" bitmap, then putting the other images on top as an overlay and then drawing only the viewable bit of this to screen. Overriding the touch events to redraw the screen on a scroll/fling. I'm sure this probably has a huge ammount of overhead (by creating a canvas of the full image whilst using(drawing) only a fifth of it) and could be done in a different way as to the explained, but I was just wondering what people would do in this situation, and perhaps examples? If you need more info just let me know, Thanks, Simon

  • Unable to transfer data to or from mounted hard drive

    - by user210335
So usually i'm good at sorting out issues. But this one has me at a loss! This issues has occured since upgrading my ubuntu so this was workingg prior. I use mounted hard drives to manage my downloads which are then copied over accordingly by a python based app. I found it was having issues with permissions to create anything on these mounted hard drives. I'm able to play and access he content of these drives so they're not faulty. My mount script looks like the following rw,user, exec, auto I really am stuck. Could anyone shed any light on how to fix this and allow me to access it. I've checked the properties and all groups should have read and write access so i'm very confused! thanks, edit here's the output of my mount options /dev/sda2 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) none on /sys/fs/cgroup type tmpfs (rw) none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw) none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw) none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw) none on /sys/firmware/efi/efivars type efivarfs (rw) udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620) tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755) none on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=5242880) none on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev) none on /run/user type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=104857600,mode=0755) none on /sys/fs/pstore type pstore (rw) /dev/sda1 on /boot/efi type vfat (rw) /dev/sdc1 on /mnt/tv type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096) /dev/sdb1 on /mnt/B88A30E88A30A4B2 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096) systemd on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd type cgroup (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev, none, name=systemd) gvfsd-fuse on /run/user/1000/gvfs type fuse.gvfsd-fuse (rw,nosuid, nodev, user=simon) /dev/sdd1 on /media/simon/New Volume3 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=4096) the main mount in question is /dev/sdc1 on /mnt/tv type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096) heres my dmesg output.
