  • Removing a device in "removed" state from Linux software RAID array

    My workstation has two disks(/dev/sd[ab]), both with similar partitioning. /dev/sdb failed, and cat /proc/mdstat stopped showing the second sdb partition. I ran mdadm --fail and mdadm --remove for all partitions from the failed disk on the arrays that use them, although all such commands failed with mdadm: set device faulty failed for /dev/sdb2: No such device mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sdb2: No such device or address Then I hot swapped the failed disk, partitioned the new disk and added the partitions to the respective arrays. All arrays got rebuilt properly except one, because in /dev/md2, the failed disk doesn't seem to have been removed from the array properly. Because of this, the new partition keeps getting added as a spare to the partition, and its status remains degraded. I need help with removing device number 1 with 'removed' status and making /dev/sdb2 active.

  • Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

    I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

  • Software raid 0 with six disks performance

    I have some problems with disk performance. I have 6 x WD 500Gb RE4 disks. Each disk gives 135Mb/sec throughput. All measurements are made with hdparm with options "-tT" (I know that it is just synthetic test, but I need some start point to make measurements). I have controller with Sil3124 x 4 ports PCI Express 1x So... RAID0 on controller with 2 disks gives 200Mb/s - ok, pcie limit. RAID0 on motherboard with 2 disks gives 270Mb/s - niceeee :) RAID0 on contorller with 4 disks gives 200Mb/s - ok, pcie limit. RAID0 on controller with 4 disks + 1 disks on motherboard = 340Mb/s ... :( RAID0 on controller with 4 disks + 2 disks on motherboard = 300Mb/s .... why? Any ideas? Maybe need more cpu power? Now there is Pentium D Dual core 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM. It is dedicated box for storage.. no other activity.

    My Sony Vaio laptop has a built-in program called "Sony Battery Care" which provides a functionality to hold battery at certain levels of charge while operating. For example, I've set it to 50% and the battery is always kept at that level while on AC power. This mode prevents battery degradation and is more effective as I usually use my laptop with AC power. I'm looking for a similar program to use with other laptops with Windows OS; preferably a free one.

  • Assembling Software RAID in Live CD for data recovery

    I need help recovering some data that's on my RAID which is on a LVM on my server running Ubuntu. What happened was I deleted the logical volume that controlled my swap space which was on a partition on drives sda2, sdb2, sdc2, and sdd2 in RAID1. This foobared my whole system for one reason or another. Booting leave me with grub rescue and an error saying that it is an unknown filesystem. When I boot to a live cd I can see my RAID arrays and I can even start them up. However, it doesn't appear to mount them anywhere so I can't see the data. I am in the live cd now and I have done sudo apt-get install mdadm lvm2 so it should be mounting them correctly. I just can't see why it wouldn't. Please any help is appreciated here. Here is some output.   • Virtualization software for windows 7

    I've been using Shadow User and Deep freeze for windows xp. But I don't think its compatible with windows 7. Do you know of any application that can achieve the same thing? Please don't tell me to use Returnil virtual system because I've had a really bad experience with it when I'm using xp. The system just restarted over and over. And I have just reformatted by that time.

  • Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

    :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

These consultants do what a normal software developer does, write code, estimate tasks, fix bugs and attend meetings etc. The only difference being the financials, consultants end up earning more. Then how is a software developer different from a "consultant"? In addition to the main question, I would like to know how can a software developer become a consultant? Are there any specific guidelines for a consultant? Do they need to amass certifications and write up research papers? Please do not confuse the software consultant with a management consultant. Software consultants I have seen are not managers.

    I have recently used some software, which come as a regular setup file, where you install your software, and then when you run it, opens the browser, uses the localhost with some specific port number to connect to the software, and runs it from there. I find it quite useful and interesting. But I even don't know whether this kind of software and programming methodology have a name or not. Therefore, I would like to learn which programming languages, APIs, and frameworks are specifically designed for this purpose? One example to this is Metasploit. You can download its setup file, and install it casually like any other software, then when everything finishes, and you want to use the software. It will open the browser and connect to, http://localhost:3790/ where Metasploit will load and start.

In Software Center An unhandlable error occured There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks. What should I do?

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center : Using Operational Profiles to Install Packages and other Content

    Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center provides numerous ways to deploy content, such as through OS Update Profiles, or as part of an OS Provisioning plan or combinations of those and other "Install Software" capabilities of Deployment Plans.  This short "how-to" blog will highlight an alternative way to deploy content using Operational Profiles. Usually we think of Operational Profiles as a way to execute a simple "one-time" script to perform a basic system administration function, which can optionally be based on user input; however, Operational Profiles can be much more powerful than that.  There is often more to performing an action than merely running a script -- sometimes configuration files, packages, binaries, and other scripts, etc. are needed to perform the action, and sometimes the user would like to leave such content on the system for later use. For shell scripts and other content written to be generic enough to work on any flavor of UNIX, converting the same scripts and configuration files into Solaris 10 SVR4 package, Solaris 11 IPS package, and/or a Linux RPM's might be seen as three times the work, for little appreciable gain.   That is where using an Operational Profile to deploy simple scripts and other generic content can be very helpful.  The approach is so powerful, that pretty much any kind of content can be deployed using an Operational Profile, provided the files involved are not overly large, and it is not necessary to convert the content into UNIX variant-specific formats. The basic formula for deploying content with an Operational Profile is as follows: Begin with a traditional script header, which is a UNIX shell script that will be responsible for decoding and extracting content, copying files into the right places, and executing any other scripts and commands needed to install and configure that content. Include steps to make the script platform-aware, to do the right thing for a given UNIX variant, or a "sorry" message if the operator has somehow tried to run the Operational Profile on a system where the script is not designed to run.  Ops Center can constrain execution by target type, so such checks at this level are an added safeguard, but also useful with the generic target type of "Operating System" where the admin wants the script to "do the right thing," whatever the UNIX variant. Include helpful output to show script progress, and any other informational messages that can help the admin determine what has gone wrong in the case of a problem in script execution.  Such messages will be shown in the job execution log. Include necessary "clean up" steps for normal and error exit conditions Set non-zero exit codes when appropriate -- a non-zero exit code will cause an Operational Profile job to be marked failed, which is the admin's cue to look into the job details for diagnostic messages in the output from the script. That first bullet deserves some explanation.  If Operational Profiles are usually simple "one-time" scripts and binary content is not allowed, then how does the actual content, packages, binaries, and other scripts get delivered along with the script?  More specifically, how does one include such content without needing to first create some kind of traditional package?   All that is required is to simply encode the content and append it to the end of the Operational Profile.  The header portion of the Operational Profile will need to contain the commands to decode the embedded content that has been appended to the bottom of the script.  The header code can do whatever else is needed, and finally clean up any intermediate files that were created during the decoding and extraction of the content. One way to encode binary and other content for inclusion in a script is to use the "uuencode" utility to convert the content into simple base64 ASCII text -- a form that is suitable to be appended to an Operational Profile.   The behavior of the "uudecode" utility is such that it will skip over any parts of the input that do not fit the uuencoded "begin" and "end" clauses.  For that reason, your header script will be skipped over, and uudecode will find your embedded content, that you will uuencode and paste at the end of the Operational Profile.  You can have as many "begin" / "end" clauses as you need -- just separate each embedded file by an empty line between "begin" and "end" clauses. Example:  Install SUNWsneep and set the system serial number Script:  deploySUNWsneep.sh ( <- right-click / save to download) Highlights: #!/bin/sh # Required variables: OC_SERIAL="$OC_SERIAL" # The user-supplied serial number for the asset ... Above is a good practice, showing right up front what kind of input the Operational Profile will require.   The right-hand side where $OC_SERIAL appears in this example will be filled in by Ops Center based on the user input at deployment time. The script goes on to restrict the use of the program to the intended OS type (Solaris 10 or older, in this example, but other content might be suitable for Solaris 11, or Linux -- it depends on the content and the script that will handle it). A temporary working directory is created, and then we have the command that decodes the embedded content from "self" which in scripting terms is $0 (a variable that expands to the name of the currently executing script): # Pass myself through uudecode, which will extract content to the current dir uudecode $0 At that point, whatever content was appended in uuencoded form at the end of the script has been written out to the current directory.  In this example that yields a file, SUNWsneep.7.0.zip, which the rest of the script proceeds to unzip, and pkgadd, followed by running "/opt/SUNWsneep/bin/sneep -s $OC_SERIAL" which is the command that stores the system serial for future use by other programs such as Explorer.   Don't get hung up on the example having used a pkgadd command.  The content started as a zip file and it could have been a tar.gz, or any other file.  This approach simply decodes the file.  The header portion of the script has to make sense of the file and do the right thing (e.g. it's up to you). The script goes on to clean up after itself, whether or not the above was successful.  Errors are echo'd by the script and a non-zero exit code is set where appropriate. Second to last, we have: # just in case, exit explicitly, so that uuencoded content will not cause error OPCleanUP exit # The rest of the script is ignored, except by uudecode # # UUencoded content follows # # e.g. for each file needed, #  $ uuencode -m {source} {source} > {target}.uu5 # then paste the {target}.uu5 files below # they will be extracted into the workding dir at $TDIR # The commentary above also describes how to encode the content. Finally we have the uuencoded content: begin-base64 444 SUNWsneep.7.0.zip UEsDBBQAAAAIAPsRy0Di3vnukAAAAMcAAAAKABUAcmVhZG1lLnR4dFVUCQADOqnVT7up ... VXgAAFBLBQYAAAAAAgACAJEAAADTNwEAAAA= ==== That last line of "====" is the base64 uuencode equivalent of a blank line, followed by "end" and as mentioned you can have as many begin/end clauses as you need.  Just separate each embedded file by a blank line after each ==== and before each begin-base64. Deploying the example Operational Profile looks like this (where I have pasted the system serial number into the required field): The job succeeded, but here is an example of the kind of diagnostic messages that the example script produces, and how Ops Center displays them in the job details: This same general approach could be used to deploy Explorer, and other useful utilities and scripts.   • Determing software estimates and tracking past estimates

    I know that this probably has as many answers as users here on SO, but software estimation always seemed like an esoteric science. Software developers don't have a magic book to refer to as exist in many other industries. I've been spending the last couple of days working on putting together some estimates for a bit of work that I am proposing for a freelance project that I am working on and am having trouble getting it down. I'm not experienced with any real software estimation practices and am trying to go from the gut based on my experience but also trying to be a little loose (not too loose though) on the estimates to leave me a bit of room to work. I read this blog entry http://blogs.popart.com/2007/07/what-scotty-from-star-trek-can-teach-us-about-managing-expectations/ that was linked to from SO and would like to start tracking my estimates at work as well even though I'm not really required to create estimates there. What tools or techniques would you recommend? Also, how much padding do you usually add in to a time estimate?

  • Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

    Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people.
