  • SQL Server 2008 - Performance impact of transactional replication?

    - by cxfx
I'm planning to set up transactional replication for a 100Gb SQL Server 2008 database. I have the distributor and publisher on the same server, and am using push subscription. Should there be a performance impact on my publisher server when it creates the initial snapshot, and synchronises it with a subscriber? From what I've tried so far on a staging server, it seems to slow right down. Is there a better way to create the initial snapshot without impacting my production publisher server?

  • MySQL Windows vs. Linux: performance, caveats, pros and cons?

    - by gravyface
Looking for (preferrably) some hard data or at least some experienced anecdotal responses with regards to hosting a MySQL database (roughly 5k transactions a day, 60-70% more reads than writes, < 100k of data per transaction i.e. no large binary objects like images, etc.) on Windows 2003/2008 vs. a Debian-based derivative (Ubuntu/Debian, etc.). This server will function only as a database server with a separate Web server on another physical box; this server will require remote access for management (SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows). I suspect that the Linux kernel/OS will compete less than the Windows Server for resources, but for this I can't be certain. There's also security footprint: even with Windows 2008, I'm thinking that the Linux box can be locked down more easily than the Windows Server. Anyone have any experience with both configurations?

  • Setting up a linked server to another server which isn’t in a domain without using SQL authenticatio

    - by Telos
Server A (SQL2005) is in our primary domain, but server B (SQL2000) is just in a windows workgroup. We are not allowed to join it to the domain, or bad things happen... We also can't enable SQL authentication on server B. We've got domain accounts for A, and matching local accounts on server B. I can connect to B from my local PC or A using SSMS and a domain login, but I can't get the linked server to connect. Any ideas how to do this?

  • Windows 2003 - Isolate mailserver on webserver with VMware Server

    - by user43279
Hi, I've a Virtual Private Server with Windows 2003 and root access. This server mainly acts as a web hosting machine (IIS, Apache). Additionally it is used as a mail server. Is it possible to isolate a mailserver (for example HMailServer) by using VMware Server on Windows 2003 in order to avoid potential viruses moving from the guest into the host system? Is this is a good direction to protect the web server from viruses? Kind regards, Jakub

  • Bigger ProjectServer farm is performing worse

    - by MSPS DBA
I am using Project Server 2007 sp3 with SharePoint 2007 sp3 and SQL Server 2008 r2. I have recently moved my farm from 2 servers (1 DB and 1 App/Web) to a very big farm having Many Servers, Clustered Database, Load Balancer, Powerful processors and Large RAM. This Farm has more than one Web Servers, Project App Servers, SharePoint App Servers and a separate Index Server. But the performance of Project Server in the new Farm has been downgraded. Views are taking even more time to load data and Project publishing time has also been increased. I am also facing deadlock problems which are causing the project server queue jobs to fail. Could anyone inform me that what would be the reason of this problem and what should be the starting point to look into the issue? Is it mainly because now the application server needs to communicate with other application servers which were not needed in the previous farm? Thanks!

  • GWT with spring security not working on app engine live server.

    I configured gwt with spring and spring security that works fine on local development server on google app engine. I deployed to the appspot but there it shows critical error when i see on the log. and on the browser side shows 500 server error. log error Uncaught exception from servlet javax.servlet.UnavailableException: Initialization failed. at com.google.apphosting.runtime.jetty.AppVersionHandlerMap.createHandler(AppVersionHandlerMap.java:200) at com.google.apphosting.runtime.jetty.AppVersionHandlerMap.getHandler(AppVersionHandlerMap.java:168) at com.google.apphosting.runtime.jetty.JettyServletEngineAdapter.serviceRequest(JettyServletEngineAdapter.java:123) at com.google.apphosting.runtime.JavaRuntime.handleRequest(JavaRuntime.java:243) at com.google.apphosting.base.RuntimePb$EvaluationRuntime$6.handleBlockingRequest(RuntimePb.java:5838) at com.google.apphosting.base.RuntimePb$EvaluationRuntime$6.handleBlockingRequest(RuntimePb.java:5836) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.BlockingApplicationHandler.handleRequest(BlockingApplicationHandler.java:24) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.RpcUtil.runRpcInApplication(RpcUtil.java:398) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.Server$2.run(Server.java:852) at com.google.tracing.LocalTraceSpanRunnable.run(LocalTraceSpanRunnable.java:56) at com.google.tracing.LocalTraceSpanBuilder.internalContinueSpan(LocalTraceSpanBuilder.java:576) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.Server.startRpc(Server.java:807) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.Server.processRequest(Server.java:369) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.ServerConnection.messageReceived(ServerConnection.java:442) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.RpcConnection.parseMessages(RpcConnection.java:319) at com.google.net.rpc.impl.RpcConnection.dataReceived(RpcConnection.java:290) at com.google.net.async.Connection.handleReadEvent(Connection.java:474) at com.google.net.async.EventDispatcher.processNetworkEvents(EventDispatcher.java:831) at com.google.net.async.EventDispatcher.internalLoop(EventDispatcher.java:207) at com.google.net.async.EventDispatcher.loop(EventDispatcher.java:103) at com.google.net.rpc.RpcService.runUntilServerShutdown(RpcService.java:251) at com.google.apphosting.runtime.JavaRuntime$RpcRunnable.run(JavaRuntime.java:404) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) web.xml <web-app> <servlet> <servlet-name>dispatcher</servlet-name> <servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class> <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>dispatcher</servlet-name> <url-pattern>*.rpc</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <filter> <filter-name>springSecurityFilterChain</filter-name> <filter-class>org.springframework.web.filter.DelegatingFilterProxy</filter-class> </filter> <filter-mapping> <filter-name>springSecurityFilterChain</filter-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </filter-mapping> <listener> <listener-class>org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener</listener-class> </listener> <!-- Default page to serve --> <welcome-file-list> <welcome-file>PushUrl.html</welcome-file> </welcome-file-list> </web-app> appengine-web.xml <application>pushurl</application> <version>1</version> <!-- Configure java.util.logging --> <system-properties> <property name="java.util.logging.config.file" value="WEB-INF/logging.properties"/> </system-properties> <sessions-enabled>true</sessions-enabled> applicationContext.xml <security:http auto-config="true"> <security:intercept-url pattern="/**/users.rpc" access="ROLE_USER"/> <security:intercept-url pattern="/**/categories.rpc" access="ROLE_ADMIN"/> <security:intercept-url pattern="/css/**" filters="none"/> <security:intercept-url pattern="/login.jsp*" filters="none"/> <security:form-login login-page='/login.jsp' /> </security:http> <security:authentication-manager> <security:authentication-provider> <security:user-service> <security:user name="jimi" password="jimi" authorities="ROLE_USER, ROLE_ADMIN" /> <security:user name="bob" password="bob" authorities="ROLE_USER" /> </security:user-service> </security:authentication-provider> </security:authentication-manager> dispatcher-servlet.xml <bean class="org.springframework.web.servlet.handler.SimpleUrlHandlerMapping"> <property name="mappings"> <value> /**/users.rpc=userService /**/categories.rpc=categoryService </value> </property> </bean> <bean id="userController" class="com.beda.pushurl.server.GwtRpcController"> <property name="remoteService" ref="userService"> </property> </bean> <bean id="userService" class="com.beda.pushurl.server.UserServiceImpl" > <property name="userDAO" ref="myUserDAO"></property> </bean> <bean id="categoryService" class="com.beda.pushurl.server.CategoryServiceImpl"> <property name="categoryDAO" ref="myCategoryDAO"></property> </bean> <bean id="myUserDAO" class="com.beda.pushurl.server.dao.UserDAOImpl"> </bean> <bean id="myCategoryDAO" class="com.beda.pushurl.server.dao.CategoryDAOImpl"> </bean>

  • Update SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008: Benefits please?

    - by Ciaran Archer
Hi there I'm looking for the benefits of upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to 2008. I was wondering: What database features can we leverage with 2008 that we can't now? What new TSQL features can we look forward to using? What performance benefits can we expect to see? What else will make management go for it? And the converse: What problems can we expect to encounter? What other problems have people found when migrating? Why fix something that isn't (technically) broken? We work in a Java shop, so any .NET / CLR stuff won't rock our world. We also use Eclipse as our main development so any integration with Visual Studio won't be a plus. We do use SQL Server Management Studio however. Some background: Our main database machine is a 32bit Dell Intel Xeon MP CPU 2.0GHz, 40MB of RAM with Physical Address Extension running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. We will not be changing our hardware. Our databases in total are under a TB with some having more than 200 tables. But they are busy and during busy times we see 60-80% CPU utilisation. Apart form the fact that SQL Server 2000 is coming close to end of life, why should we upgrade? Any and all contributions are appreciated!

  • Problem exporting SQL Server management Studio Express to Go Daddy

    - by brohjoe
I'm having a terrible time exporting SQL Server Management Studio Express tables to the Go Daddy webserver. Go Daddy support can't help either. I started by using Microsoft Database Publishing Wizard for SQL Server thinking it would be 'easy'....not! I ran into user/password errors even though I was using the user and password that was created for the SQL database in the Go Daddy site. I called help desk support at Go Daddy and went through several iterations of processes to get the thing working but it didn't. Finally, the support guy acted like his phone went on the blip and scuttled away. There has got to be someway to upload SQL Server to a webserver without a lot of drama. Any suggestions?

  • How to use SQLErrorCodeSQLExceptionTranslator and DAO class with @Repository in Spring?

    - by GuidoMB
I'm using Spring 3.0.2 and I have a class called MovieDAO that uses JDBC to handle the db. I have set the @Repository annotations and I want to convert the SQLException to the Spring's DataAccessException I have the following example: @Repository public class JDBCCommentDAO implements CommentDAO { static JDBCCommentDAO instance; ConnectionManager connectionManager; private JDBCCommentDAO() { connectionManager = new ConnectionManager("org.postgresql.Driver", "postgres", "postgres"); } static public synchronized JDBCCommentDAO getInstance() { if (instance == null) instance = new JDBCCommentDAO(); return instance; } @Override public Collection<Comment> getComments(User user) throws DAOException { Collection<Comment> comments = new ArrayList<Comment>(); try { String query = "SELECT * FROM Comments WHERE Comments.userId = ?"; Connection conn = connectionManager.getConnection(); PreparedStatement stmt = conn.prepareStatement(query); stmt = conn.prepareStatement(query); stmt.setInt(1, user.getId()); ResultSet result = stmt.executeQuery(); while (result.next()) { Movie movie = JDBCMovieDAO.getInstance().getLightMovie(result.getInt("movie")); comments.add(new Comment(result.getString("text"), result.getInt("score"), user, result.getDate("date"), movie)); } connectionManager.closeConnection(conn); } catch (SQLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); //CONVERT TO DATAACCESSEXCEPTION } return comments; } } I Don't know how to get the Translator and I don't want to extends any Spring class, because that is why I'm using the @Repository annotation

  • Cannot access Network Shares on Windows Server 2008 running VisualSVN Server

    - by mwillmott
Hi, I have installed VisualSVN server on Windows Server 2008. The server is part of a domain but not the domain controller, it is just a data server and now an SVN server. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

  • MS SQL Server Firewall Ports

    - by mmacaulay
Hi, I've recently found myself in the position of quickly deploying a production app on SQL Server 2008 (EXPRESS), and I've been having some issues with configuring firewall rules between our web server running the ASP.NET app and our database server. Everything that I can find on the internet claims that I should only need to have TCP ports 1433/1434 and UDP port 1434 accessible on the database server. However, we were unable to get connectivity going between the web app and the database with just those ports. With the help of one of the guys in our datacentre, we discovered that there was traffic also going to TCP port 2242 on the database server. After opening this port, everything worked, but we're not sure why. Later on, I had to reinstall SQL Server due to some disk space issues, and found that the problem had resurfaced - after another session with the packet sniffer, we discovered that this time traffic was going to TCP port 4541 on the database server. My question is, is there some configuration option that I'm missing in SQL server that's making it choose random ports? I'd like to have our firewall rules locked down as much as possible, and of course we'd like to avoid any future mysterious connectivity issues, especially once the app is live. Both servers are running Windows 2003 R2 X64.

  • Can I setup a test server and then transfer everything to a diff. production server?

    - by Justin
Hello, I am going to be setting up a "real" server, but it's not being shipped for another week. I was planning on setting up most of the server's functionality using an extra workstation I have. I wanted to set-up Windows Server 2003 or 2008, IIS, Terminal Services, Firewall, and Antivirus on this regular machine. I'd also be installing software like Winzip and VMWare that'll be used on the server. I can't ghost the machine, as far as I've done in the past, because the motherboard/cpu/etc. will all be different. Is there any way to export all of the "server settings" or something like that so I can move everything from test to production? Is there any software out there that does something similar to this? Some things I'm going to have to wait on such as setting up the file server completely in its raid configuration, but I'd like to get the simple server stuff and network setup out of the way. Has anyone done this before? Do I need software, open-source or not, to do this? Or maybe there's a way to export all the server settings in some way? Thanks in advance! Justin

  • RPC Server Unavailable When Trying to Join W2003 Server to W2003 Active Directory Domain

    - by Roel Vlemmings
I have an Active Directory Domain with a Windows 2003 Standard SP2 Server as the DC. When trying to join an additional Windows 2003 Standard SP2 server to the domain I get message "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain 'My Domain'. The RPC Server is unavailable. The computer is actually added to the Active Directory Computers. I can even right-click and Manage it. I can access file shares from the DC on the other server and vice versa. I can ping the DC from this server and ping the server from the DC using the computer name. The time on both server is the same more or less to the second. RPC service is running on both servers. I can join other computers to the domain and there are no other issues with the domain. Windows Firewall disabled on both computers. NetSetup.LOG shows: NetpSetNetloginDomainCache: DSEnumerateDomainTrustsW failed 0x6ba I looked up this WIN32 Error Code: It is RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE.

  • SQL Server Reporting Services - website blank, builder works

    - by Keith
We have a few reports in SQL Server Reporting Services. For some reason when we run the report from the website, it doesn't return any data. When I run the same report from the Report Builder, it returns data. I looked in the logs and the only errors I could find is: ReportingServicesService!library!8!6/15/2012-08:12:33:: i INFO: Current DB Version Unknown, Instance Version C.0.8.54. • Log Shipping breaking daily on SQL Server 2005

    - by IT2
I am facing a somewhat serious problem with Log Shipping on SQL Server 2005 and I am having trouble to correct it, so I will try some help from SF's experts. I have a Windows 2003 Server (PROD) that ships transactional log backups to another two servers: STAND1: Windows 2003 Server with SQL Server 2005. STAND2: Windows 2008 R2 Server with SQL Server 2005. The problem is that Log Shipping to STAND2 is breaking for ~ 90 minutes some times of the day and returning back without intervention. The breaking occur at times when the backup file is larger (after reindexing, etc). I can see the message below logged on the COPY job: *** Error: The specified network name is no longer available The copy agent was breaking dozens times a day only to STAND2 server, and after the changes below "only" breaks ~ two times a day: The frequency of the backup job was changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Instead of backing up the 4 databases to the same folder, the log backups are now saved on separated folders for each database. The backup job doesn't run 24hs now, and only for 14 hours a day, when people are working on the database. I configured the SQL Server instances on the three servers to limit the memory, leaving more memory to the OS. Now I don't know what to do. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Server 2003 PDC DNS not working..Failover server is...

    - by Seth
In the midst of trying to utilize proc power, i create a fault tolerant DNS server a while ago. Since, Ive been trying to add another controller for exchange. So I thought I would revert back to a single primary DNS for the meantime and now Im balancing on a thread. The server i thought I uninstalled DNS, is still acting as DNS. And now the PDC does not resolve. Can anybody walk me through, Im overwhelmed and cant think straight... Im afraid if anyone restarts their machine they wont have internet. Update Ok so from the beginning. I was configuring Exchange on a new server 2008. How it happened I dont know, but it started to not resolve DNS. (exclamation mark on NIC) even though everything was static. So ultimately I decided to remove the server from the problem, because I noticed DNS was in disarray if I used the DNS IP of the first server. This is when I tested with nslookup on each DNS server. I had uninstalled DNS from the second server, but nslookup was still resolving with that IPaddress, which has me all wound up cause I dont understand. So, since the first DNS server isn't resolving, Im assuming if the second one isnt configured right I'll loose internet. Im just confused and dont know where to start troubleshooting...

  • Windows Server Connected to Domain Without Being Domain Controller

    - by saluce
Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a domain controller? Here's the scenario: I want to use Windows Server 2012 to run several virtual machines for testing our web application in a variety of environments. We have a corporate domain, and I'd like to use the corporate login (or at least a common login) on each of the virtual machines without necessarily having to get IT to set up each virtual machine on the corporate domain. Also, I need the server itself to be able to authenticate domain logins (the app uses domain login information for users to login). However, I absolutely do NOT want it to be a DC on the corporate network. Thus, my questions: Can a Windows Server be connected to an Active Directory domain without being a DC? Can a Windows Server authenticate users on another domain without being a part of that domain? Can a Windows Server be a domain controller in a small network (comprised of just the server and itself) and use the corporate domain's Active Directory for authenticating user logins to the server, the web app, and the virtual machines?
