    Today I met a friend who is also using stackoverflow. He had a job interview today at a small business and during the interview, the prospective boss asked him how he assures that he's alawys up-to-date concerning technical questions and what he's doing to seek for a solution for a problem he can't solve by its own. Besides some magazines, journals, books and blogs my friend also mentioned stackoverflow. The prospective boss seems very interested about that and asked him if he could tell him his username. It appears that was the most difficult during the whole interview ;) Would you tell your prospective boss your username? An the pro side one can mention that the boss sees that you're very involved in your business and community but on the other hand it is a really private thing and you cant post anymore in thread like "what was the worst working environment?" My friend circumnaviagted this question by a rather lame answer (more or less: i use autologin, thats why i have to check the username later at home, ill maybe send you an email)

    I'm not familiar with Google Analytics but I think you can use it to see how many people get to your site using different search strings. But if you don't yet have the site, can you simply ask Google how popular a search is? For instance say you're choosing a new product name/slogan/etc. First of all, you want to see if that is already very crowded, which is easy through just Googling it. But now you might want to see if anyone is actually searching for this... an ideal situation would be to find a search-string lots of people are using, which doesn't put your competitors on the #1 spot. Is this possible? Not exactly programming-related, but closely related to web-development IMO... please vote to close if you disagree, I won't be offended!

  • How to tell if a freebsd jail is up to date?

    I've set up a "Service Jail" in FreeBSD 8.0 according to the FreeBSD Handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/jails-application.html). After upgrading the host to the latest patch level and then performed a jail-upgrade, freebsd-fetch still reports that there are files in need of an update in the jail. Is this expected? Then how do I know if a jail is up to date? This is what I've done in more detail: After the initial setup of the jail freebsd-update fetch reported that there were no updates available neither in the host system nor in the jail. This was expected. A while later freebsd-update fetch reported that the following files where in need of an update both in the host and in the jail. /usr/lib/libssl.a /usr/lib/libssl_p.a /usr/lib/libzpool.a /usr/lib32/libssl.a /usr/lib32/libssl_p.a /usr/lib32/libzpool.a I updated the host and followed the upgrade guide for the jail (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/jails-application.html#JAILS-SERVICE-JAILS-UPGRADING). freebsd-update fetch now reports that there are no updates available in the host but the following is the output from freebsd-update fetch in the jail: [root@bb /]# freebsd-update fetch Looking up update.FreeBSD.org mirrors... 3 mirrors found.   • How can I tell Firefox to ignore unprintable characters?

    Edit: Summary Apparently the intended character to display in this case is an "en-dash". This page has a table half way down that shows that for the &ndash;, some software will convert the correct hex code of 2013 to 0096. (look at the first row in the table). This answer on Stackoverflow explains that somehow this is a mixup between Windows-1252 and UTF-8 This blog article enforces this: Character 150 (0x96) is the unicode character "START OF GUARDED AREA" in the non-displayed C1 control character range, but in the Windows-1252 encoding it's mapped to to the displayable character 0x2013 "en-dash" (a short dash). Others have struggled with this when producing content, as this answer on Stackoverflow shows how to replace 0x0096 with 0x2013. Google must realize this, because as stated in my original question below, Google's cached version of the Amazon page has &ndash; so it seems they are automatically correcting these mistakes on pages they cache. I have tried setting my encoding to Windows-1252 but that does not help. So now I guess my question is, how can I tell Firefox to ignore unprintable characters like these? Original content below: (Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP) Every once in a while I notice an odd character on certain web pages when browsing the web. It is a outline of a box with a 4-digit number inside. And example of a page that has these characters is: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#highlights After each section heading (Elastic, Completely Controlled, ...) I see a box with the number "0096" inside. I looked at the cached version on Google, and google has &ndash; in it's place, so I'm guessing I should be seeing a dash there instead of the box with the numbers in it. I have tried changing the character encoding in Firefox but haven't been able to find one that shows these characters correctly. Is there a way to allow Firefox to view these characters? Thanks in advance! Edit - adding a screen shot of the "special" characters: Edit #2 - tried in Ubuntu - new screenshots I logged into my Ubuntu desktop and browsed to the amazon page in Chrome and Firefox. Chrome completely ignores character, even if I inspect or view page source. Firefox in Unbutu displays the character exactly like Firefox on my Windows XP box. I copied the character and played around with it at the command line - here is a screenshot of the results: It looks like I can paste the character into this post as well: `` It is definitely not isolated to Windows XP. I tried setting the character encoding for my terminal to Windows 1252 (from Dennis' comment below), but then it just displays this character as a question mark. I pulled the webpage down with wget and with curl, and both outputs show this characters as: <96> It makes me wonder if this character renders correctly for anyone? It appears webkit just ignores it, my IE6 ignores it, Firefox displays the box with the numbers in it. I would have to imagine the design team at Amazon can see it correctly? It's not a huge deal to get these characters displaying correctly, but it would be nice to know if there is a solution to this.

    I need some help regarding the above title. After applying SP1 pack on our SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 3.0) the workflows aren't working anymmore on one of the WebApplications (located in SSP2) Workflows work, however on other existing applications (on SSP1 or SSP2) or newly created applications (on SSP1 or SSP2). Details of error: 1. Default / Built in SharePoint Workflows are not starting 2. Sharepoint Designer Workflows throwing the following error message: "You do not have permissions to do this operation. Ask your website administrator to change your pemissions and then try again, or log on with another account that has this permission. To log on with another user account click ok. " 3. Before applying the SP1 on MOSS the workflows were working perfectly fine on this WebApplication. so far: 1. I am logged in as Administrator (bot on Sharepoint site or when working with Sharepoint Designer). 2. Administrator is included in the list Site Collection Administrators 3. I noticed in Sharepoint designer that the username used for creating the workflow is 'converted' into SHAREPOINT\system (in the Modified By Column). Has anybody come accross/fixed this error?   • Need help to install Ubuntu on Win7 Alienware M17xR3, installing not working

    Please I need help to install linux on my computer to start analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (molecular genetics) for my work. I've tried to install from all different ways and forms and it gave me different errors. First I will describe my system: Alienware M17x R3 Raid Drive 596GB (2x 298 GB) Windows7 primary partition C: The hardrive is divided in 3 primary partitions (can't do 4 don't know why) 1st: Fat16 no name capacity 40mbs almost not used (has files like command.com, dellbio.bin, dellrmk.bin and oobedone.flg) I dont know what this is for but is blocked and non system (Status:none). 2nd: Recovery NTFS 9GB (Status:system) and it seems to have boot files. 3rd: CD: Windos OS (status:boot). And I have 2 Logical drivers F: data for backup and games :D (300gb) G: For trying to install the Linux (Already tried with Fat32, Ext2, ext3 and ext4) Installing with Wubi on F: and G: Instalation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode appears: try (HD0,0) non-ms:skip try (HD0,1) NTFS5: No Wibildr try (HD0,2) NTFS5: Error: "Prefix" is not set. Installing with Wubi on C: Installation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode apears: Mount denied becouse NTFS volume is already exclusive opened, the volume may be already mounted or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'FUSER' command Mount devdm-4 Could not find installation files /ubuntu/install custom-installation Run 'Chkdsk /r' on windows and restart...blablablalba... that should correct. done this didn't work. Tried installing with USB drive and after burning a CD with the Iso file download from the official website: I've tried the option to install along windows with a G: drive in FAT32, EXT2,3 and 4, I've tried to leave unallocated data, without the driver G at all... appears this everytime: http://i.stack.imgur.com/eo2Ie.png pres ok it ask me to: Not possible to install the boot loader at the location: specify new location: I've tried to select all the drivers non is accepted If I ask to continue without installing the boot loader he ask me to install later by myself which I'm trying to figure it out but I'm not really good to understand how ppl get to the programming part like a DOS to write down couse I'm a newb and I've dont work on dos or linux before... I've read that the boot loader has to be installed on the primary partition, but I'm not sure what I can delete from those 2 partitions that would let me get 1 extra... and it seems that the one that windows use is protected to write down so the software is not touching it... Please if someone have any idea to help me out... I've got a course tomorrow of how to use the software to analyze the data and I wanted to take my computer with me, so I've passed the last 3 days trying to search different ways to solve.   • Using "route add" to tell my computer to use a direct ethernet connexion instead of wifi ?

    2 PCs are involved. Both are connected to the internet via Wifi on the same router. I can ping to/from each other and share folders flawlessly, but I'd like to be able to set a direct Ethernet link between them to speed up file transfers AND keep the Wifi connections (no gateway). So I plugged my RJ45 cable, and set up the connection. It works, but the PCs are only using this connection if one of them if disconnected from the Wifi. PC1 local address is 192.168.0.7 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.21 on the wifi one. PC2 local address is 192.168.0.6 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.22 on the wifi one. My question is : I'd like to using the route add command to tell PC1 to use the Ethernet interface when it needs to connect with PC2, by specifying "IF 2" at the end of the route add command. How can I do this ?     Hello guys, i have a web form who send post variables like: <form action="teacher.php" method="post"> <input name="pass" type="password"> <input name="quiere" type="image" value="submit" src="IMG/unlock-32.png" /> </from> In the same page i check for a submit acction with php doing a simple isset check like: "if (isset($_POST['quiere'])) {" But if you do this in IE the post var "QUIERE" (the button var) does not post, the others vars are fine, and if you try this simple form in any other browser it works. I only get this form function well in IE changing the button for a normal button, instead of a image button like: <input name="quiere" type="submit" value="submit" /> In this way, the var "quiere" get post. So, what do you think? and sorry for my english.

    Hey guys, I am trying to create a grid like system with div's with content floated left. The problem is that the height of each div is not static since the content is different in each one. Since the height is different.. things get outta whack if one is taller then another in one row. Is there some sort of css way or js (prefer javascript) way to get around this.   • Java: how to tell if a line in a text file was supposed to be blank?

    I'm working on a project in which I have to read in a Grammar file (breaking it up into my data structure), with the goal of being able to generate a random "DearJohnLetter". My problem is that when reading in the .txt file, I don't know how find out whether the file was supposed to be a completely blank line or not, which is detrimental to the program.   • In MySQL how can I tell what character set a particular table is using?

    I have a large mysql table that I think might be using the wrong character set. If so I'll need to change it using ALTER TABLE mytable CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 But since this is a very large table, I'd rather not run this command unless I have to. So my question is, how can I ask mysql what the character set is on a particular table? I can call status in mysql to see the database's character set, but that doesn't necessarily mean all the tables have the same character set, right?

    Say I loaded a bitMap into a bitmapData type called tileImage. tileImage = Bitmap(loader.content).bitmapData; say I decided to add that bitmap into a sprite like below this.graphics.beginBitmapFill(tileImage ); this.graphics.drawRect(0, 0,tWidth ,tHeight ); It would of course work. But say If I decided to add tileImage into a another bitMapData type like below var tImage:BitmapData = new BitmapData(30,30); tImage.copyPixels(tileImage,tRect,tPoint); and I then added tImage to my sprite this.graphics.beginBitmapFill(tImage); this.graphics.drawRect(0, 0,tWidth ,tHeight ); I then get the following error ArgumentError: Error #2015: Invalid BitmapData. tRect and tPoint are all predefined and set. tRect x and y are 0,0 and the width and height are 30x30. tPoint is 0,0 as well. Yes I understand that this is a very brief explanation but I wanted to elaborate that a bitMapdata type that has its data from the copypixel method does not work with beginBitmapFill. but a varible that gets its data straigt from the source, does. One works, and one doesnt, yet they are both the same data types. why is this ?
