  • Blade servers for vm?

    - by jason clark
We're using VMware on a normal rack mounted server and considering getting another. I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers? • "Zinc Whisker" issues?

    - by Dizzle
Good morning; We've been having intermittent power supplies failures in our data center that have been preliminarily attributed to "zinc whiskers". I'm just starting to read about them (I just Googled the term and started picking stuff), and I'm interested in others experiences with them and any cleanup and recovery experiences. Thanks!

  • Linux servers going into Halt when pressing Control-D in putty or exit in the shell

    - by Itai Ganot
Since today at noon, there's a number of Linux CentOS servers which are going to Halt whenever i type exit or use Control-D to close the putty window. Did anyone encounter this weird behavior before? I've checked the aliases list on the servers and there is no alias regarding halt command. After the server came online i've checked the history and saw a "logout" command there but nothing which is related to Halt. At first, i thought it happens only from my computer but later i realized that it happens to everyone which types exit, logout or control+d. 2 of these server are our main iptables firewalls and so it's super critical, your assistance is much appreciated. It looks like that, and it only happens on servers with active IPTables: [root@srv1 bin]# ssh srv2 root@srv2's password: Last login: Sun Nov 11 17:19:41 2012 from 192.168.12.98 [root@srv2 ~]# vim /etc/crontab [root@srv2 ~]# exit logout Broadcast message from root (pts/1) (Tue Nov 13 10:44:04 2012): The system is going down for system halt NOW! Connection to srv2 closed. [root@srv1 bin]# In my troubleshooting steps i came across the command strace, and so i've opened two bash windows to one of the problematic server and i used strace -p PID_of_bash. When i typed in exit in the first shell it did go to halt, attached is the strace output, if you can check it out and tell me if you see anything suspicious i'd be more than thankful. • ZFS - how to partition SSD for ZIL or L2ARC use?

    - by ewwhite
I'm working with a Sun x4540 unit with two pools and newly-installed ZIL (OCZ Vertex 2 Pro) and L2ARC (Intel X25-M) devices. Since I need to keep these two pools in the near-term, I'd like to know how to partition these devices to serve both pools of data. I've tried format, parted and fdisk and can't quite seem to get the right combination to generate recognizable partitions for zpool add. The OS in this case is NexentaStor, but I will also need this for general OpenSolaris solutions.

  • Generate a limited amount of random network traffic between 2 hosts

    - by Andrew S
I'm trying to find a utility that will allow me to generate a constant flow of random network traffic at a specified rate between 2 hosts. The utility needs to run on Windows and OSX. I've tried iperf but it seems to be more oriented toward short-term testing/statistics and it really taxes the CPU even at slower rates. I want something that will generate traffic for a few weeks at say 10Mbps while I use other tools to monitor the impact of that level of traffic on the network.

  • Disadvantages of not having a swap partition

    - by Bo Tian
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. Due to space constraint of the SSD, I did not set a swap partition for the OS, and I have 1.5GB of RAM. There's a warning during installation, but I think it's not a big deal since everything went smoothly. For the long term, would there be any drawbacks of not having a swap partition?

  • Pros and Cons of Creating an Internal Cerificate Authority

    - by Chad
What are the pros and cons of spinning up an internal certificate authority (primarily Windows 2003 CA)? We have the need to encypt server-server traffic on a project that has 20+ certificates. We could buy certs from Verisign, but I was thinking that an internal CA might be a better long term solution. So I was looking to the community to provide a pros/cons list of what we might gain (or lose) by hosting our own CA? Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Personal cloud storage options

    - by rhaddan
I'm looking for some personal cloud storage options. My biggest concern about moving to a hosted storage solution is the long-term viability of the provider. Has anyone used a cloud service that you're crazy about? I'm a Mac user, so I need to have something that will work on the Mac OS and ideally the iPhone as well.

  • libreadline history lines combine

    - by jettero
This has been driving me crazy for about three years. I don't know how to fully describe the problem, but I think I can finally describe a way to recreate it. Your milage may vary. I have a mixture of ubuntu server and desktop machines of various versions and a few gentoo machines with various states of disrepair. They all seem to kindof do their own thing, although with similarities. Try this and let me know if you see the same thing. pop open two xterms (TERM=xterm) resize one so they're not the same issue screen -R test1 in one (TERM=screen) and screen -x test1 in the other hooray, typing in one shows up in the other; although notice that their different size produces artifacts and things issue a couple commands in your shell hit ^AF in the one that doesn't fit quite right, now it fits!! scroll back over the history a little goto 6 Eventually you'll notice a couple history lines combine. If you don't, then it's something unique to my setup, which spans various distributions and computers; so that's a confusing concept to me. If you see the thing I'm seeing then this: bash$ ls -al bash$ ps auxfw becomes this: bash$ ls -al; ps auxfw It doesn't happen every time. I have to really play with it — unless I don't want it to happen, then it always does. On some systems (or combinations), I get a line separator like the example above. On some systems, I do not. That I get the line separator on some systems seems to indicate to me that bash supports this behavior. Its history is entirely handled by libreadline and after perusing (ie, carefully reading) the man pages, I couldn't find a single readline setting for combining two history lines. Nor can I find anything in the bash manpage. So, how can I invoke this on purpose? Or, if I can't do that, how can I disable it completely? I would take either answer as a solution. Currently, I only see it when I don't want it.

From the PowerShell prompt: \Windows\system32\mspaint.exe will run Paint. So will Invoke-Expression -command "\Windows\system32\mspaint.exe" but if there is a space in the path PowerShell spits the dummy e.g. Invoke-Expression -command "\install\sub directory\test.bat" Which complains: The term '\install\sub' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. • How to maintain a SSD drive on Ubuntu ?

Should I use TRIM and how often ? This may look as a duplicate of this question, but I am more asking in term of good practices and learning how to use this new technology the right way...

  • Domain: Netlogon event sequence

    - by Bob
I'm getting really confused, reading tutorials from SAMBA howto, which is hell of a mess. Could you write step-by-step, what events happen upon NetLogon? Or in particular, I can't get these things: I really can't get the mechanism of action of LDAP and its role. Should I think of Active Directory LDS as of its superset? What're the other roles of AD and why this term is nearly a synonym of term "domain"? What's the role of LDAP in the remote login sequence? Does it store roaming user profiles? Does it store anything else? How it is called (are there any upper-level or lower-level services that use it in the course of NetLogon)? How do I join a domain. On the client machine I just use the Domain Controller admin credentials, but how do I prepare the Domain Controller for a new machine to join it. What's that deal of Machine trust accounts? How it is used? Suppose, I've just configured a machine to join a domain, created its machine trust, added its data to the domain controller. How would that machine find WINS server to query it for Domain Controller NetBIOS name? Does any computer name, ending with <1C type, correspond to domain controller? In what cases Kerberos and LM/NTLM are used for authentication? Where are password hashes stored in, say, Windows2000 domain controller? Right in the registry? What is SAM - is it a service, responsible for authentication and sending/storing those passwords and accompanying information, such as groups policies etc.? Who calls it? Does it use Active Directory? What's the role of NetBIOS except by name service? Can you exemplify a scenario of its usage as a "datagram distribution service for connectionless communication" or "session service for connection-oriented communication"? (quoted taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetBIOS_Frames_protocol description of NetBIOS roles) Thanks and sorry for many questions.

  • 'less' doesn't clear screen after quit

    - by Dana
The default behavior for 'less' is to clear the screen after quitting. This behavior stopped when I started using: export TERM=xterm Now 'less' leaves the last page I viewed on the screen, and I want to re-enable the default behavior of clearing the screen. Googling this problem I found that people use the following command in their ~/.screenrc: altscreen on I'm not sure if this is a mac-issue but I don't have this command available. I'm using bash shell on Mac terminal. Thanks!

  • Reverse Proxy Question!

    - by Dr Hydralisk
I know that Nginx does not support .htaccess files, but if you used Nginx as a reverse proxy (is that the correct term, Nginx handles static, Apache handles dynamic) with Apache, would you be able to use .htaccess files then?

  • high resolution on small screen size

    - by vishesh
I have recently got an intel ultrabook, but its screen size is 13.3' and the native resolution is 1600X900.So the problem is that the letters that appear on screen are very small.Reducing resolution blurs the display and making everything bigger also doesn't feel very good.is there a way to get around this problem without changing hardware. I am even ok with this high resolution but I am concerned about the harmful effects it might have on my eyes in long term. Any advice will be very useful. Please help

  • How can you turn off alternate screen in OSX's Terminal.app?

    - by yacoob
altscreen is evil. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see this page for visual demonstration. Problem is, there doesn't seem to be a way to stop it with Terminal.app (under OSX), when you're not using screen. Yes, you can edit terminfo definition, but that's rather blunt hammer. Plus that solution might break if Apple decides to update relevant term's definition in some patch. Is there some clean way to convince Terminal.app to block altscreen usage?

  • What is the difference between "load" and "fetch"?

    - by DragonLord
I often encounter the words load and fetch in contexts where data are being read from some source, and they seem to have slightly different meanings. What's the difference? I've done some research and couldn't find any specific technical difference in general usage. While the term fetch can refer to one stage in CPU instruction execution, I've seen it used in contexts not related to CPUs, and I'm looking for an answer that is not specific to CPUs.

  • how do I make two internal networks speak with one another

    - by Nick M.
I have two internal networks that are connected to each other 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.11.1 I am trying to make devices on the 10.10.10.1 network be able to access the devices on the 10.10.11.1 network and vice versa. My questions is what is the networking term used to "bridge/route" traffic between the two networks making each other available to one another. Also what is the process in getting this going using iptables?

  • Trimming / cropping a movie file ?

    - by ldigas
Now, I'm not really sure what's the exact term here. As far as I saw, cropping is related to video size. I need a program to trim some parts of the video file. On a timescale, for example, from 0-60s, I'd like to trim the parts from 14-20s, and from 30-35s. Can anyone give a recommendation for such an application ? The movie in question is a .MOV file, so Windows Movie Maker doesn't work.

  • Zeacom UC Compared To Microsoft UC

    - by Kia
Which is a better solution? Zeacom's Unified Communications or Microsoft's Unified Communications (UC)? Which one has your company implemented? I heard Microsoft coined the term "Unified Communications" but they were slow to jumpstart it... Other companies such as Zeacom have been working on and improving on their UC product since years ago. But Microsoft is such a standard. Which one would you go with?
