  • How should I remotely manage Dell Poweredge 2850 running Ubuntu server?

    First I've got to say I'm a Linux / Ubuntu novice, so go gentle on me as I'm on day 3. I've managed to get Ubuntu server Ubuntu 8.04 LTS installed and running on the Poweredge 1850 I bought off ebay. The box will go in a rack at my office but I want to be able to work on it and power on and off from home and I gather that (maybe) IPMI over LAN might be the way to do this, or maybe its something to do with BMC or something? I want to be able to administer/manage from a client PC at home running XP. I will be configuring the office router to port forward port 80 and 443 to the Ubuntu server running Apache2, and I'm puzzled about how the remote management works (unless it comes on a different port forwarded to a different internal IP) Thanks for any help

  • ubuntu 9.10 installer doesn't recognize the hard drive

    I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 and am trying to install it on a fairly modern system with a Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 motherboard. Ubuntu 9.04 installed fine and still will when I stick that disc in, but 9.10 doesn't see my hard drive (western digital 250GB). If I boot from the disc, I can install gparted and it does recognize the drive, but when I try to start the install process from the live disc, Ubuntu again doesn't recognize the hard drive. I checked /var/log/messages and see this: Nov 12 17:28:08 ubuntu activate-dmraid: Serial ATA RAID disk(s) detected. If this was bad, boot with 'nodmraid'.   • Is it possible to store playlists in music file metadata?

    I have been trying to think of a way to store my playlists completely independently from any one music player, and I think that one way to do this would be to use each song's tags to store the list of playlists in which that song belongs. For example, if song1.mp3 and song2.flac both belong in the "Cool Songs" playlist, then I would add to each of them a tag called "Playlist" with a value of "Cool Songs". To access the "Cool Songs" playlist in my music player, I simply search for songs where the "Playlist" tag has a value of "Cool Songs". Obviously, I would need a music player that allows me to manipulate arbitrary tags on any music format, including multiple instances of the same tag (so that songs can be in multiple playlists). Instead of creating playlists, I create "saved searches" or whatever the music player calls them, that search for the appropriate playlist tag. Is this scheme possible, and how many music player programs would support such a scheme?

  • How do I free some disk space so Ubuntu will boot again?

    I have installed Windows and Ubuntu side by side. I created a 10GB partition for the Ubuntu installation. During the two months I've been using Ubuntu I have installed some software. Now it's not starting. When I boot up it says that there is no diskspace so it could not be started . What can i do now? When I boot up all I get is a black screen terminal with a $. Please help me with a command to uninstall some programs and start using Ubuntu or any other way to get rid of this message.

    I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated.   • Cannot play windows WMA lossless files on Rhythmbox

    I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 with all its updates (without Windows) on it’s own drive and everything is working fine. I want to play WMA audio files, also mp3 files. The mp3 files play fine. The WMA files do not play. Used "Rhythmbox Music Player" with and without "Ubuntu-restricted" -extras. Still does not play the lossless windows audio files. I am frustrated with searching to play a WMA file ("download this converter"), but one cannot use this until one "deletes this". I have done everything but it still does not play my windows lossless files that I made from all my CD’s. I am looking for a music player that I can use to play mp3’s and WMA lossless music files and automatically put the album cover on and update the info if one exists. Installation should be as simple as possible. Right now I am back to the original virgin Ubuntu 10.10 with all the recent updates. This computer will do nothing but play music (mp3 and WMA) through a stereo system. I also use Internet to update album info for the music. I do not care what bells and whistles the music player program has, as long as it is an easy install and just plays my mp3 and wma lossless music files. Any help would be appreciated.

    I've downloaded hundreds of songs from SXSW 2009 Showcasing Artists. In Songbird, I've filtered out a lot of songs which I don't like, i.e. gave rating of one to them. I hope to delete all these from my hard disk, but it's a feature yet to implement in Songbird. The most close solution I could get is this. But it works not well, and always messes files around. So, hope you could bring up a reliable and better solution.

  • Magento set Store Id - customer login - but still logged out

    I've got an overridden AccountController in which i set the current store to an other as currently running (example: Customer is in website default and store default, going to login page, click login, my loginPostAction sets the store to id "2" (on website 2) and then executes the parent code loginPostAction. The store is set, of course, but after the login and the redirect to home, the customer is not logged in anymore... Customer-sendlogindata-myaccountcontroller sets store-original account controller logs in without errors (cause $session customer is set)-redirect to home-customer is not logged in anymore... i set the store with Mage::app()-setCurrentStore($id); . And in index.php i've got an extra where the store is set to the right id (2) too and this works... but the customer is not logged in anymore.. is that an issue with the session cause different websites ? I don't want to globally share customer.. each website has his own customers, but every customer has to be able to login on default store.     I'm trying to restore android after playing around with ubuntu touch I follow exactly the same steps described the ubuntu's wiki page i.e. Download the factory image corresponding to your device's model and version (initial table has links). Ensure the device is connected and powered on. Extract the downloaded file and cd into the extracted directory. run adb reboot-bootloader run ./flash-all.sh (use sudo if lack of permissions on the workstation don't allow you to talk to the device). The archive is downloaded successfully, checked the sha1 checksum everything is ok. But the ./flash-all.sh fails like this sending 'bootloader' (2308 KB)... OKAY [ 0.513s] writing 'bootloader'...   • A glitch after Ubuntu Installation. Cannot boot Ubuntu

    I am trying to create a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows 7. My hard disk allocation were as follows: Windows 7 NTFS 100 GB /boot EXT4 200 MB SWAP LINUX SWAP 4 GB / EXT4 46 GB After installation is complete, instead of getting the boot screen of Ubuntu, it directly boots from windows 7 without asking anything. What is wrong? I run the Live Cd again using USB drive and I see that the \boot, and \ are occupied with most likely Ubuntu data. Now How do i point my Laptop to point to Ubuntu Boot instead of Windows Boot

    I downloaded the Ubuntu Software to create a USB to install Ubuntu. I rebooted my PC (Windows 7), in wich i did a partition (:E) just for Ubuntu. But when i start the installer, it says there's no other OS in my computer, and doesn't give me the option to install it in :E, just the option to format the WHOLE hard drive and install it there. What can i do? Also, i tried Wubi before, but it had an error with "wubildr.mbr"

  • How can I get run Ubuntu Desktop on my Galaxy Nexus?

    On the Ubuntu for phones site it advertises the desktop view feature: "The phone becomes a full PC and thin client when docked.". And there's the demo by Canonical of something similar running under Ubuntu for Android. I realize they're different systems, but the end effect is in both is to have a full Ubuntu system running on the phone. I've installed Ubuntu Touch Preview on my Galaxy Nexus (toro), and it's working as expected (no cellular signal, but wifi works, etc). But when I plug in a monitor via HDMI it just mirrors the phone's touch display. There's also currently no bluetooth support for attaching keyboard and mouse. Keyboard only kind of works via USB, and mouse not at all. I've also tried running Ubuntu under Android via VNC, but the lack of responsiveness of VNC makes it impractical for daily use. I'd consider that route again if there is some way to make the UI more responsive. So the question is, how can set up my phone to run Ubuntu Desktop in a way that's useable as a laptop replacement? Is there a way to enable Desktop View on Ubuntu Touch? Or can I run Ubuntu for Android as in the previously referenced demo? Plugging into a monitor would be OK, but I'd love to be able to use the desktop interface with mouse and keyboard through the phone's screen as well. Touch input and an onscreen keyboard would be a plus but is definitely not necessary.

  • Fresh install on SSD with Ubuntu and Windows Vista, using whole disk encryption for Ubuntu

    I would like to do a fresh install on a OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD 60GB drive I purchased on the cheap. Since the AES-encryption looks like it may not work optimally for this drive, I would like to set up a dual-boot to Windows Vista (the only Windows copy I have for clean install purposes) and Ubuntu 12.04 with the best encryption scheme possible. My plan is to have Windows around just in case I need to use a program that won't work with Wine and Ubuntu as my daily OS with all of my information secured in case the laptop is ever stolen or sold. Although this setup will not provide a lot of space, I think I can squeeze both OSes and have enough for second-computer office tasks. So, my questions are: Which OS should I install first, Ubuntu or Vista? Any special considerations when partitioning the drive? How should I install Ubuntu to ensure full disk encryption for the Linux partition(s) and or my daily computing? Is there a significant performance upgrade with doing a solo install of Ubuntu instead of a dual boot setup? Will TRIM, for example, work correctly? Are there any significant security concerns with going the route of a dual-boot, other than the fact that any activity on Windows may be fully recoverable if the drive is stolen or sold?     I installed Zorin 6 (based on Ubuntu 12.04), because I like all the whistles it has (plymouth screen,compiz effects,installed codecs, sound themes, etc.). I miss though the modern and futuristic unity environment (launcher, dash, HUD, indicators etc.). Is there a way to switch from Zorin to Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and keep all these effects? Or What additional software should I install in an Ubuntu clean install to add the effects Zorin has (plymouth, compiz effects, sounds, audio and video codecs etc.)

    10:10 I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows 7, after the installation was able to upgrade to version 4.11. Now I'm trying to update to version 11.10 but I get an error message saying it is not possible to upgrade, I decided to install a partition that I created the part, but when I start the PC directly opens Windows 7 does not appear to me the option to choose which want to start the operating system. I formatted the partition where you had installed ubuntu, I've been looking for tutorials where you learn how to install ubuntu on a partition part to try to understand what my problem. I wonder if I can explain how to install ubuntu on a partition that part so that when I connect the PC to show me the option to choose which system I want to start.

  • Creating a music catalog in C# and extracting first 30 seconds as soon as the first words are sung

    I already read a question: Separation of singing voice from music. I don’t need this complex audio processing. I only need some detection mechanism that would detect that there is some voice/vocal playing while the music is playing (or not playing) I need to extract first 30 seconds when a vocalist starts singing along with full band music. See question 2 below. I want to create a music catalog using ASP.NET MVC 2 and Silverlight clients and C#.NET 4.0 programming language that would be front store. On the backend I would also like to create a desktop WPF/Windows application to create the music catalog from already existing music files, most of which have metadata in them ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags etc. I would possibly like to create a web service that would allow catalog contributors to upload a zipped album and trigger metadata extraction of music data and extraction of music segments as described below. I would be happy if I achieve no. 1 below. Let's say I have 1000ths of songs in mp3 (or other formats) grouped in subfolders using some classification (Genre, Artists, Albums, Composers or other groupings). I want to create tables in DB that would organize songs so they can be searched based on different criteria (year, length, above classification or by song title, description etc) like what iTune store allows to their customers. I want to extract metadata from various formats (I will try to get songs in mp3 format, but there may be other popular formats) and allow music Catalog manager person to add missing data from either desktop or web applications. He or other contributors can upload zipped music via an HTML or Silverlight upload or WPF. Can anybody suggest open source libraries, articles, code snippets that can do that in an automatic way using .NET and possibly SQL Server DB? My main questions are these. This is an audio processing challenge. I want to extract 2 segments of music (questions 1 and 2): 1. How to extract a music segment: 1-2 seconds before a vocal starts singing and up to 30 seconds from that point in time and 2. Much more challenging is to find repeating segments (One would usually find or recognize the names of the songs and songs are usually known by these refrains. How would I go about creating a list of songs that go great together like what Genius from iTune does? Is there any characteristics of music that can be used to match songs? The goal is for people quickly scan and recognize songs i.e. associate melody, words with a title/album so they can make intelligent decisions like buying a song, create similar mood songs.   • SChannel "cannot find certificate in either LocalMachine or CurrentUser store"

    We have an in-house application that requires the use of client SSL certificates to authenticate with a remote server (not under our control). This has worked without problems before but on deploying to a new server, we're having problems getting Windows 2008 to use the certificate. The certificate exists as a .pfx file that contains a private key. The same certificate exists in the LocalMachine store, again with its private key. We've ensured the one in the LocalMachine store is correct by creating a website in IIS against that certificate, so we're happy that the certificate, certificate chain, and private key is valid. The PFX has been created by exporting from the Certificates MMC snap-in. The issue is that we get the following in the system diagnostic logs that suggests it can't find the private key: System.Net Information: 0 : [5988] SecureChannel#23264094 – Locating the private key for the certificate: [Subject] CN=internal-server.company.com, OU=Servers, OU=Devices, O=org [Issuer] CN=SubCA02, OU=CA, o=org [Serial Number] 407ABCDE [Not Before] 31/10/2013 11:08:48 AM [Not After] 31/10/2016 11:08:48 AM [Thumbprint] 4354A34F6004F019E60F055979A47E50F62D1504 . System.Net Information: 0 : [5988] SecureChannel#23264094 – Cannot find the certificate in either the LocalMachine store or the CurrentUser store. I've validated the thumbprint, issuer and serial number listed in the log with the certificate in the LocalMachine store and these marry up. From what I can tell with much searching, this appears to be a permissions issue. The user the application is running as has been granted access to the private key (Personal Certificates - right click on the certificate - all tasks - Manage Private Keys), so I'm now at a loss as to which permission(s) it may be that is causing the issue.
