  • Will Windows XP work on a Hybrid Hard Drive?

    I'm looking into getting the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive, and I'm planning on dual booting between Windows 7 and Windows XP. I know 7 and Vista have native support for taking advantage of the SSD portion of a hybrid drive, and I assume XP does not have any such support, but will XP still work on the drive? I would think it will, but I wanted to be sure, and the Googles are coming up empty for me on this one. Thanks!

  • CUPS printer on Vritual Machine can be access via CUPS admin, but not by XP?

    I have a Zebra label printer connected to a Linux Mint virtual machine. It was set up with CUPS and a Windows XP computer can then print to it via http://192.168.1.76:632/printers/labelprinter. That was all fine and dandy I then hooked up a Fargo Pro L PVC card printer to a Windows XP virtual machine. I had to disconnect the label printer as the server that hosted both virtual machines only has 1 parallel port. Now I plugged in the Zebra again, and it cannot print from the Windows XP computer anymore. If I go to the CUPS admin panel on the Windows XP computer, I can see it, everything looks fine, and I can send it a test page to print which works. If I try to print from Windows, I get an error that the printer is not found/cannot connect to the server. The only other thing that changed was the firewall on the router to allow remote desktop to another computer from outside the network, but all the firewall stuff was for external use. Nothing affected the IP address of the internal network. The Linux Mint VM also had a PDF pritner that was shared with CUPS. That printer is also down. I tried setting up a new CUPS installation on another VM, and when I go to share it with XP, I get the same error. I don't know what to try. It has access, it can get to the admin from that computer, it seems to be up and ready, but when Windows tries to connect, the printer isn't found even though 4 days ago everything was fine. Any ideas?

  • Advice for Windows XP Scripting, WSH versus PowerShell

    After much experience scripting in the Unix/Linux open-source world, using languages such as Bourne Shell, Perl, Python, and Ruby, I now find myself needing to do some Windows XP admin scripting. It appears that the legacy environment is Windows Script Host (WSH), which can use various scripting languages, but the primary language is VBScript, and is based on COM objects. However, the future appears to be Windows PowerShell, which is based on .NET. I haven't done Basic since Applesoft in the 70s, so I'm not keen on learning VBScript, although I did learn enough to write a small script to mount network drives. If I'm going to spend time to really learn this, I'm leaning towards investing my time in the .NET PowerShell environment, if it truly is the future. I did some C# Windows Forms programming a couple of years ago, so I have some exposure to .NET, which also makes PowerShell attractive. Understanding that no one has a crystal ball to predict the future of Microsoft, I would like hear from anyone who is a PowerShell user and thinks it's worthwhile, or if there is anyone that knows of serious drawbacks to PowerShell, and recommends that I stay away from it. Update: I ended up using WSH/VBScript for a particular script that I am installing as a startup script on user's Windows XP workstations. All I have to do is copy it to their Startup folder, and I'm done. However, I only learned enough WSH to accomplish this one job. I am glad to see that PowerShell is the future, and when I have more complicated scripting tasks, I'll to turn PowerShell.

But under XP the logic contained within FireAttackProc gets executed but none of the sound clips play. Is there a quick solution to this so the sound will play under XP? I ask for a quick solution because i am happy being able to execute fully in Vista/Win7 but would be great if there was a quick solution so it would be XP compitable also. Thank you.

What I'm lacking is a little direction Is friendly name able to be written inside the connected USB Micro chips by the firmware programmer? (I'm thinking of this to identify the device even further, or is this to help identify Bulk data transfer devices like memory sticks and camera's) Can I use SPDRP_REMOVAL_POLICY_OVERRIDE to some how reset these polices What else can I do with the registry details. Identifying when some one unplugs a device The program is using (in windows XP standard) I used a documented windows event that did not respond. Can I read a registry value to identify if its still connected? using CreateFileA (DevicePath) to send and receive data I have read when some one unplugs in the middle of a data transfer its difficult clearing resources. what can IoCreateDevice do for me and how does one use it for that task This two way point of connection status and system lock up situations is very concerning. The Realtek Sound driver is also installed.     I need to script a way to install IPV4 on windows xp the reason is i have many pc with a corrupt win sock registry so the fix Microsoft has is to delete the reg keys hklm/system/currentcontolset/services/winsock and winsock2 and then to run a netsch ip reset which creates the winsock2 part of the registry then the part i need to script is go to network adapter properties goto tcpip and install a new protocol and select tcp/ip and install it which uses the file c:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf and then this creates the winsock part is there a way to script this part?? i have looked and cant find anything
