• Repercussions of Raising Domain Functional Level to 2008 on Mac computers running 10.6.2 with OD

  We have recently replaced all of our 2003 server domain controllers to 2008 r2 and have tried to implement PSO's but have found that the domain functional level must be raised to 2008. We have a mac server in our environment that runs open directory and it is integrated into AD. Does anyone know if I do raise the domain functional level (which makes sense since we only have 2008 r2 domain controllers) what the repercussions (if any) there will be on the macs in the environment? Macs are running 10.6.2 and mac server runs the same. Mac server is running OD and also bound to AD.

• Hooking up a laptop to an HDTV via VGA

  I have a 2-3 year old laptop running XBMC, and I have an HDTV that I'd like to connect it to. The only output that the laptop has is VGA (and S-Video - I don't know if the TV supports it) . The TV doesn't support VGA input, but takes HDMI. -- Is it worth buying a VGA-to-HDMI converter? As in this: -- Are there any other, cheaper options available? There's a lot of information around the WWW, but a lot of it's outdated and it's hard to digest everything. I know of at least one other option, and that's a USB to HDMI connection, but I don't even know what to look for or where to get started on that one. I also suspect it might be a little more complicated. If it's cheaper then it could be worth it. • Installing SDM on a Cisco 2821 ISR

  I trying to change the configuration of our router, it's a Cisco 2821 Integrated Services Router. I don't know much about Cisco products. While looking at the PDF manual for the router I notices it talked about SDM Security Device Manager. But when I point my web browser at the IP address of the router, it give me a very simple web interface. It's sort of like a string builder for CLI commands. I'm guessing SDM was not installed on it. So my question how would I go about do that? I found this link (below), but I'm a bit new to networking. • How to turn off the unity launch bar in ubuntu 11.10

  I would like to use the unity option in ubuntu but without the unity sidebar. I've seen how I can select to use just gnome from the login screen but there are some things I like about the unity interface. E.g. From what I've seen I like the integrated application menu with the ubuntu menu up the top that unity option comes with. So I really just want to turn the launch bar off. • Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. • 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• WOL not working

  I have a Marvell Yukon integrated NIC and i have installed the WOL package on my freeBSD-based NAS. I'm trying to wake my PC using the command "wol M:A:C:A:D:D:R". Command line spits back that it is "waking" however nothing happens. I found no reference to WOL whatsoever in BIOS and i enabled Magic Packet WOL in windows on that interface. Also double-checked MAC addr and that i entered it in the correct format in "wol". I'm on Windows 7. What next? =/

• Pop3 to SMTP message custom forwarder in C#

  I'd like to write a service that periodically checks a POP3 account for new messages and based on custom business logic forwards the messages to an appropriate "To", and possibly changes the "From" as well. I might need to keep some messages on the server until certain conditions are ready for them to be forwarded. • Building optimal custom machine for Sql Server

  Getting the hardware in the mail any day. Hardware related to my question: x10 15.5k RPM SAS Segate Cheetah's x2 Adaptec 5405 PCIe Raid cards Motherboard has integrated SAS raid. Was thinking I would build 2 RAID 10 arrays one for data and one for logs The remaining 2 drives a RAID 0 for TempDB Will probably throw in a drive for OS. Does putting the Sql Server application / exe's on a raid make a difference and is there any impact of leaving the OS on a relatively slow disk compared to the raid arrays? I have 5/6 DBs combined < 50 gigs. With a relatively good / constant load. Estimating 60-7% reads vs writes. Planning on using log shipping as well if that matters. Any advice or suggestions?

• Cases of companies taking IP rights of your own personal projects developed outside company time

  Hi, I have heard of cases where a developer working for a company is also making his own personal projects in his own time, using his own equipment yet the company he works for tries to claim ownership for the project. I really find this annoying, and bang out of order. It should also be illegal. I am in this position (work for a company and working on my own systems - from small class libraries used to practise what I learn in my exam revision to a large commercial-scale system). While I don't know if the company will try to take ownership, all I know is they say they do not want a conflict of interest. Fair enough, my system is developed in my own time using my own equipment. They also say that work time should be for work only, which it is. Funny thing that as work is so boring, easy and slow that I have plenty of free time, which I wish I could spend on something productive - said system. The problem is, my company does not take hiring technical talent seriously. This is my first job, I am a junior coder (but my status/position doesn't really reflect what I can do), but I am the only developer. Likewise with the guy who controls Windows Server. As the contract does not say anything about taking ownership, I would assume they would. They would try to milk my success (I've made a good impression so I am sure they would). How can this be allowed? Are there any examples of this happening to any fellow Stacker here? It really makes my blood boil. What I find funny is that my company hardly has the expertise and resources to even be able to successfully run a project of my size. What I do at work is an ASP.NET application consisting of five pages, and even then there are flaws in the project. If I told them that they would also have to take responsibility for flaws in the project, then they would think twice! It's exactly because of this I save the best code for myself and at work I write rubbish code full of code smells. The company don't really care about error handling, as long as the business functionality works (ie a scheduled email sends, but there is no error handling). They'd think twice when they see the embarassment and business cost of a YSOD...

• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong? • HP Envy webcam pictures all purple

  I have a new HP Envy 15 with an integrated webcam, running Win 7. It works, but all the images are purple, suggesting to me that the red and blue guns are working, but the green isn't. The problem shows up on both their own software and on Skype. I talked to tech support, and they had me update the BIOS, reinstall the hardware BIOS for the webcam, and update the webcam software. It therefore sounds like a hardware problem, but they won't back that unless I do a full restore, which would wipe my disk of all the software I've spent the last couple of weeks configuring. Is there anything else I can try? Other than just buying another webcam, I mean. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• How can I trap errors for an application that is tightly coupled with IIS?

  We have an unsupported application that relies on IIS however intermittently brings out the website it is integrated with. I have looked at the logs and there is nothing in the logs to indicate what the issue could be as the logs only have GET verbs. I have also looked at the event viewer and there are no error logged in there either. The application runs off a Windows 2008 server. Is there a freely available application we can have running in the background that will listen to or is aware of the application running and traps the error when it crashes? The unsupported application is a bespoke implementation for which we don't have code for and the developer is no longer contactable.

  My machine has a Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics chipset. The machine is currently running 64 bit windows 7 premium with 3GB of ram (1x1gb and 1x2gb). I note that the Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD shares the physical memory to process the graphics. now, the total available graphics memory can be up to 1,340 MB with a 32-bit operating system and 3 GB system memory or 1,759 MB with a 64-bit operating system and 4 GB system memory. I am considering investing in a 4GB stick to replace the 1gb stick bringing the total up to 6gb, mainly for an increase in graphics processing ability. Can anyone let me know what sort of power (if any over the 4gb) I could expect by upgrading to 6GB?

• How low-power can a home server get?

  I've got quite simple question actually. How green, low-power and efficient x86 home server can I build using consumer parts with rather constrained budget. After looking through some Google hits I've found out that system based on dual-core atom, some modest mITX board (gigabit lan, integrated audio and gfx etc), one RAM module and one 'green' WD HDD, powered by picoITX PSU uses about 30W at idle up to 40 at load. Can you get lower (or how much lower) then that? Maybe some VIA nano chips, or single core atom? My home server would take care of some back-upping mixed with little ftp/http traffic.

  We have a strange problem in our team. When a developer is using Eclipse in Debug mode, SQL Server 2005 blocks other developers from accessing a stored procedure. Debug session typically involves opening Hibernate session to persist an entity which could be accessing a stored procedure used for Primary key generation. Debugging is done in business logic code and rarely in JDBC stored procedure call. Is there any way to configure SQL server or the stored procedure so that other developers are not blocked?
