• Screen split oddly when OS is installed from a Live CD

  Never used Linux before but I decided I want to start somewhere and Ubuntu seemed like the right place to start. I burned the 64bit version ISO onto a CD and installed it onto a fresh new hard drive I have. The Live CD works and the Live Distro thing works great. However when I attempt to install it, the screen splits oddly in a way where part of the right is on the left. Furthermore, after attempting to log in, the GUI doesn't show up and the computer would freeze and stay that way. However you can still move the cursor. I can't really get in or do anything (possibly because I don't know how) and tinker around since I am not too tech savvy. But I can follow instructions. Graphics Card Radeon hd 6670 I just tried the install with windows thing. There was the exact same problem.

• Graphics system failure

  I just upgraded two versions of Ubuntu to Oneiric after a recent set of updates broke Audacious 2.4.something in Maverick for me. When it was all finished my Asus Eee 1215N with the 1366x768 screen and the notoriously unsupported Nvidia Ion2 Optimus chipset was working on minimum compatibility fallbacks at 1024x768 resolution. So I did a little bit of reading (not enough) and tried deleting a couple parts of the graphics system to see if I could force a retry on the autodetection. The result: No graphical shell works now. Attempted so far: -reinstalling xorg/nouveau, didn't work. -installing bumblebee/nvidia-current, didn't work. -sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a, didn't work. I'd like to stress that this is otherwise a perfectly functional installation that I had spent some time setting up already (including a successful compile of Audacious 3.21 that was working with all the plugins). Is there a way for me to rebuild the graphics system from scratch or should I just give up, cry a little, backup data, wipe partition and reinstall with a USB drive?

• Updated 11.10 - now trackpad and wifi won't work. How can these be fixed?

  I reinstalled 11.10 on my Asus EEE 1005HA, and my mousepad hasn't been working since. I've tried the workarounds mentioned in this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867357 but, I get the message on the command line that says, "Synaptic isn't installed." When I go to the network settings to install Synaptic, I can't turn on wifi - no wireless options exist. How can I turn on wifi from the command line, on a new 11.10 install? Or, is there a way to turn on the trackpad and wifi from the install thumb drive? How can I move forward?

• Will Ubuntu 12.04 work on an Acer Aspire One D257-1682?

  Is it possible to install Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire One D257-1682? I have a disc that I used to run Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop without incident. When trying to run it on my Aspire One, using an external DVD drive via USB, I get a ton of errors about missing files while it tries to load Ubuntu. I found a list of which versions of Ubuntu to run depending on which Aspire One model you have, but the D257 was not listed at all. I want to have Ubuntu on my Aspire One for coding Java and C++ since I don't have to sit at my desk for hours. Please help! -Avid

• Windows no longer boots on dual-boot system

  While trying to delete an Ubuntu partition from my hdd I accidentally rebooted my computer. (Note: the partition was originally made from an existing partition using paragon.) After that when I tried to start the computer I got the GRUB rescue terminal prompt. I wasn't able to do much from that, but I did manage to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive and to run boot-repair. But now when I try to select Windows 7 from the boot selection menu I get the error 0xc0000225. • June 23, 1983: First Successful Test of the Domain Name System [Geek History]

  Nearly 30 years ago the first Domain Name System (DNS) was tested and it changed the way we interacted with the internet. Nearly impossible to remember number addresses became easy to remember names. Without DNS you’d be browsing a web where numbered addresses pointed to numbered addresses. Google, for example, would look like http://209.85.148.105/ in your browser window. That’s assuming, of course, that a numbers-based web every gained enough traction to be popular enough to spawn a search giant like Google. How did this shift occur and what did we have before DNS? From Wikipedia: The practice of using a name as a simpler, more memorable abstraction of a host’s numerical address on a network dates back to the ARPANET era. Before the DNS was invented in 1983, each computer on the network retrieved a file called HOSTS.TXT from a computer at SRI. The HOSTS.TXT file mapped names to numerical addresses. A hosts file still exists on most modern operating systems by default and generally contains a mapping of the IP address 127.0.0.1 to “localhost”. Many operating systems use name resolution logic that allows the administrator to configure selection priorities for available name resolution methods. The rapid growth of the network made a centrally maintained, hand-crafted HOSTS.TXT file unsustainable; it became necessary to implement a more scalable system capable of automatically disseminating the requisite information. At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System in 1983 and wrote the first implementation. The original specifications were published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 882 and RFC 883, which were superseded in November 1987 by RFC 1034 and RFC 1035.Several additional Request for Comments have proposed various extensions to the core DNS protocols. Over the years it has been refined but the core of the system is essentially the same. When you type “google.com” into your web browser a DNS server is used to resolve that host name to the IP address of 209.85.148.105–making the web human-friendly in the process. • Ideas for making money off a website

  I'm considering acquiring a website that traffics close to 20k a month. It's currently unprofitable, but obviously I would need to change that to justify the cost. It's a support site for a framework similar to CakePHP. A resource that allows people to find plugins for that site. How would you go about expanding this site so that it would be broad enough to raise traffic and how would you make money off of it? Some ideas I've had: 1- BuySellAds.com seem to make ads classy and relevant 2- Team up with other sites in some way (What ways? ... Ecommerce sites that sell plugins (like CodeCanyon), etc) 3- Write tutorials and such to drive more traffic (time consuming, and already heavily saturated for this framework). Are there resources out there that help webmasters in ways like this?

• Printing with Lacie Lightscribe requires root privileges

  I have installed Lacie Lightscribe software on Ubuntu 12.04. Everything seems to be fine, the drive is detected, the proper media is detected, but when I click print I get the message "Printing Requires Root Privileges". I am the main (administrator) account on this computer, part of the sudo group and I cannot seem to find an answer to this dilemna in plain english. I've seen some apparently relevant posts which say things like "check whether the files /usr/4L/4L-gui and /usr/4L/4L-cli have any setuid-bits set. If so, remove them" but I need more detailed step-by-step instructions than that, please. Is there anyone who knows how to solve this?

• How to enable TRIM on LVM on Ubuntu 12.10?

  When I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit on my SSD, I chose the option to use LVM in Ubiquity. I am trying to find out how to enable TRIM for my SSD. I came across this article: http://worldsmostsecret.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-activate-trim-on-luks-encrypted.html The article states in addition to adding discard and noatime to /etc/fstab , discard must be added to the drive (sdX_crypt) in /etc/crypttab. My problem is the only listings in my /etc/crypttab are several cryptswap; it does not list any sdX_crypt. I currently have a /dev/sda1 (ext2), which is the boot point, and /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root, which is my ext4 partition. Any ideas as to how to enable TRIM?

  I have a problem with Grub 2. when i hit the Windows 7 (loader) option on the Grub boot screen Windows won't boot. i get a black screen with a white cursor blinking... Here is a log of my Boot options. I just want to delete all the other partitions which i don't know how they 've been made and stay just with the Ubuntu ext4 partition, the swap partition and the WIndows 7 partition. Can someoune help me with my problem? • Is there a better way to run ubuntu from usb disk

  I have an old laptop with a broken hard drive controller and am running the previous ubuntu from a usb. I installed this as per standard instructions by running some program that copied the live cd to the usb. This has had a few problems, it seems like it was just made for trying and not for everyday use. Ideally I would like to do a proper install to the usb disk instead of just running off the installer disk. Is there a way to do this? The main problems I have are: When adding mounts to fstab it gets overwritten on each reboot When installing updates the kernel cannot be updated

  I have a 20 GB NTFS volume that I was planning on using for a variety of purposes, including being readable by windows with little effort. Unfortunately, for some reason, I cannot execute any files on the drive, even after following the answer here (I was able to mount the volume just fine, but the error persists). How can I fix this? • How do I install a DVD decryption library?

  I recently built a computer running Ubuntu 11.10. It works great, except for one thing. With some video DVDs, when I insert them into my drive, the movie player just says "An error occurred. Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed." My mac plays the DVD just fine. What is a DVD decryption library, and how can I install it? Thanks! EDIT: I need LEGAL way to do this. All I want is to be able to use this computer as a HTPC!
