• Full outer join in django

  How can I create a query for a full outer join across a M2M relationchip using the django QuerySet API? It that is not supported, some hint about creating my own manager to do this would be welcome. Edited to add: @S.Lott: Thanks for the enlightenment. The need for the OUTER JOIN comes from the application. It has to generate a report showing the data entered, even if it still incomplete. I was not aware of the fact that the result would be a new class/model. Your hints will help me quite a bit.

• Cross-Page communication in firefox extension

  I have two tabs that my extension uses and I wanted to pass events back and forth between them. I've already developed a Google Chrome extension that does this via the background page api, but there doesn't seem to be an equivalent in firefox. I thought message-manager in the firefox extension docs would do the trick, but the documentation on the object is quite poor. I'd be just as happy with using one of the tabs to control the other if I can't directly import the ideas of a background page from google chrome api. Any help/guidance would be great.

  I have created an organizational chart using ASP.NET on web page. The web page is using strict DOCTYPE and following W3C standards. The chart has a hierarchical layout decided by the manager field in the table that contains employees in the organization. The chart layout has nodes with employee image and other details like job title, department and contact details. Nodes are beautifully arranged and connected by lines (only horizontal or vertical or both). A lot of DIV elements are used (to avoid table) for connecting lines and arranging the chart properly. As suggested by my friend, using DIVs for connecting lines in the chart is semantically wrong. Is there a way by which I can make it semantically correct? Or, am I using HTML for the wrong purpose?

• How do you interface with a USB to Parallel adapter?

  I'm currently doing a project where I have to interact with a circuit I made through the parallel port of a computer. However, my computer doesn't have a parallel port so I borrowed a Parallel to USB adapter cable. The cable didn't come with any drivers, but it's recognized by the device manager as a "USB Printing Support" controller, under the USB section. It seems that old parallel printers can be plugged in and work properly without any problems. So my question is, if I write a program in Java that tries to interact with a parallel port directly, will it work? And if not, can anyone give me some pointers as to what I need to do to interact with it? Thanks.

• Developer workload management software: recommendations?

  In my place, we use two issue tracking tools, one for production bugs, and another for issues on projects in development. These tools are good for managers. However, at an individual level, other work can also arrive through desk visits, email, or the phone, and those allocating the work aren't always interested in issue tracking systems. I've recently rolled off an 18-month project where I got into a cycle of overtime, and I found that I didn't always have good visibility of all work assigned to me. As a result, I was always very busy, and felt constantly laden down with work, but didn't have the clear data to show my manager (or, ironically, the time to stop and gather the information!). A handwritten list, updated at the end of each day, is a good start, but can anyone recommend better tools to help me get a clear view of my own workload? Ideally, I'm thinking of software tools for developers, which could incorporate estimates, but all suggestions welcome. Thanks, Paddy

  Hi, I'm learning about SNMP, and writing some applications using it. I have some basic questions about the protocol: Do the agents store its state on the device itself? If there is a trap set on an agent, can you do a poll on the same OID to get the same information? Without using a mib file, is there a way to query a device for all of its information at once? If not, and you're writing your own customized manager, do you have to know the structure of what it reports up front? If you're setting up an agent to report, is there usually a way to control the frequency of how often it sends a trap? Or does it usually send a trap as often as some condition is satisfied?

  I've been fighting my way through the process of migrating a (previously self-hosted) WCF application to IIS7 (I've never used IIS before and I realise that this is a very simplistic question but I failed to google/SO the answer so far). My service is hosted at http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/SampleWebsite/Service.svc but when I access it with ?wsdl all the references that should read http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/ are actually set to the window machine's local network name (i.e. http://localpc3/). I've tried using the WCF tool to add the external IP address to the base address section under the service I'm configuring as well as a number of setting inside IIS but I can't seem to track down the correct place. Where do I set this? IIS manager, web.config, somewhere else?

For more information, contact your system administrator." When I RDP into the server and try Microsoft CRM Workflow Manager/Monitor with http or https connectivity, it doesn't work. "The specified Microsoft CRM server is not responding. This might happen if it is currently unavaliable, it is not a Microsoft CRM server, or you are not a valid user. Contact your sys-admin." This is a Microsoft CRM v3.0 / Microsoft SQL server 2005 box, Active directory is on a seperate box.. When I right click Microsoft CRM Worlkflow Service, properties, log on: it shows "crmtestuser" and a password. I did not RDP or try logging in as that crmtestuser, but I am Admin... Could this be a clue? What can I try?

  Hi all Just a quick question Here's my situation: I've been maintaining, extending and creating websites against a CMS for the last 18 months In that time I've learnt a LOT more about ASP.Net, javascript, and of course the quirks of the CMS we are using My manager wants to get others involved, and I'm expected to mentor another programmer whilst they work on production code Now, I've got no problem mentoring someone and it would be great for me to not be the only one with the skillset. But what I HAVE got a problem with is mentoring someone within an agreed timescale of the piece of work (10 days in this case) AND expected to deliver the product to the same standard. I guess what I'm getting at is: 18 months experience != a few days mentoring, not to mention the level of C#/.Net/ASP.Net/Javascript required may also not be up to scratch. Am I right to think this is a little, wrong?

• console windows not close after stopping program

  Hello, Visual Studio 2005 C++ Windows XP Pro I have a sample application that I am testing, that links with boost libraries. However, the program runs ok. However, when I try and stop the program by clicking the 'Stop Debugging' button. The program ends, but the console window remains open. So I have many of them, as during my testing I am starting and stopping the application. Even when I try and close it by clicking the close button it has no affect. And it doesn't seem to appear under task manager when the program ends. The only way I can close them if I reboot windows. I am thinking it might be a thread that has not closed, and maybe that is keeping the console windows open. Many thanks for any advice,

  I'm currently developing with VS2010 RC and Silverlight 4 and ran into small problem. My project when ran, would show a version I had built about 4 hours ago. (I built the project using the Business Template) The project itself will not update, meaning all the forms, and controls. I did the following: Restarted my computer Restarted Visual Studio Deleted the xap file in the ClientBin folder on the web side Deleted the Generated_Code folder on the client side Deleted the xap file from the Debug folder on the client side Opened the Solution's Configuration Manager and ensuring both my web and client projects are checked. Rebuilt, built, and cleaned every combination of the different projects and solution Is there a known bug or something else I can try?

• Starting x11vnc remotely when X server is already running

  I have a ubuntu linux machine that I have already logged into and X server is running (it is pass the login manager like gdm). I can access this machine through ssh. My goal is to start x11vnc on this machine and attach it to the X server that is already running. When I ssh into the machine and start x11vnc, it says: X11 was unable to open the X DISPLAY ":0", it cannot continue. How can I start x11vnc on the remote machine if I don't have physical access to it and Xserver has already started. • Automate Testing on future only items business rules

  I currently have a business object with a validation business rule, which is it can only be created for the future, tomorrow onwards, and I cannot create new items for today. I have a process, which runs the non-future business objects through some steps.. Because I have to set things up today, and test tomorrow, and when it fails, I can only create a new object tomorrow and test the following day. Are there any easy ways to automate this process in any testing frameworks? I think our testers are using the visual studio 2010 test manager. How do you guys manage situations like this? Cheers

  I have an ASP.NET 3.5 page with an update panel and history enabled. It works fine when I perform async postbacks but I get problems when I want to perform a normal postback. The page load happens fine for the normal postback but then I get asynchronous page loads from the script manager which load the ajax history in. If I could have the ajax history not loading for the times I want to perform a normal postback then everything would be fine. Is there anyway to do this?

• ZooKeeper and RabbitMQ/Qpid together - overkill or a good combination?

  Greetings, I'm evaluating some components for a multi-data center distributed system. We're going to be using message queues (via either RabbitMQ or Qpid) so agents can make asynchronous requests to other agents without worrying about addressing, routing, load balancing or retransmission. In many cases, the agents will be interacting with components that were not designed for highly concurrent access, so locking and cross-agent coordination will be needed to avoid race conditions. Also, we'd like the system to automatically respond to agent or data center failures. With the above use cases in mind, ZooKeeper seemed like it might be a good fit. But I'm wondering if trying to use both ZK and message queuing is overkill. It seems like what Zookeeper does could be accomplished by my own cluster manager using AMQP messaging, but that would be hard to get really right. On the other hand, I've seen some examples where ZooKeeper was used to implement message queuing, but I think RabbitMQ/Qpid are a more natural fit for that.   I'm trying to write a C#/.NET application that optimizes the hard drives for our XP workstations Set pagefile to "No paging file" Reboot Run a defrag utility to optimize the data and apps Create a contiguous page file Reboot, run pagedefrag from Sysinternals I'm really struggling with #1. I delete the following key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PagingFiles Upon reboot, the System Control Panel shows "No page file", but c:\pagefile.sys still exists and its in use by the SYSTEM process so I can't delete it and I can't optimize HD. I tried using PendingFileRenamingOperations and that bombs out too. I tried using WMI: Win32_PageFileSetting, but that only lets you set sizes (not zero--defaults to 2MB). Of course, if I do the manual steps outlined above, it works. I think I need an API call to make this happen.
