• Can I use other ways than Ubuntu Software Center to open `apt` links?

  Without Ubuntu Software Center in Lubuntu I was unable to edit opening apt links in any program in Firefox (see this question) After installing Ubuntu Software Center, that problem is solved, but could I use other program instead of Ubuntu Software Center for the same purpose? I find it too heavy, and to install I prefer the Terminal, gdebi, Lubuntu Software Center or the Synaptic. (Now that I have the apt option in Firefox/Preferences/Applications, I try to change Ubuntu Software Center to Lubuntu Software Center but this does not change the option.)

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04, as a dual boot on my windows Vista laptop, and the next thing I know, I get black screen with error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> I have tried reinstalling Windows, reinstalling Ubuntu, booting from Ubuntu disk, and managed to actually get into the OS, but there is nothing I can find of uninstalling Ubuntu, and deleting the partition it created. I know nothing at all about Linux, and I desperately need to get my laptop back up and running.

  I am having Ubuntu 12.04 minimal installed on my USB pen-drive; which I use on several systems as portable OS. I was thinking to edit the boot parameters so that before the main Ubuntu OS is loaded, it shows an option to Boot from Hard Drive for 5 seconds, and then boots to Ubuntu. This way i'll be able to have an option to boot to the OS installed on the Hard-Drive, without removing or unplugging my ubuntu USB stick. How do I edit the boot parameters to achieve this?

  I'm trying to build some code on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS that uses OpenSSL 1.0.0. When I run make, it invokes g++ with the "-lssl" option. The source includes: #include <openssl/bio.h> #include <openssl/buffer.h> #include <openssl/des.h> #include <openssl/evp.h> #include <openssl/pem.h> #include <openssl/rsa.h> I ran: $ sudo apt-get install openssl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done openssl is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded. But I guess the openssl package doesn't include the library.   I have Karmic Koala which has Python 2.6 installed by default. However I can't run any Python App Engine projects because they require Python 2.5 and python ssl. To install ssl I installed python2.5-dev first while following some instructions I found elsewhere. sudo apt-get install libssl-dev sudo apt-get install python-setuptools sudo apt-get install python2.5-dev sudo easy_install-2.5 pyopenssl However, I am afraid this is not good for my Ubuntu installation since Ubuntu expects to see version 2.6 of Python when you type 'python' on the command line. Instead, it says '2.5.5'. I tried to revert to the original default version of Python by doing this: sudo apt-get remove python2.5-dev But that didn't seem to do anything either - when I type 'python' on the command line it still say 2.5.5. And App Engine still doesn't work after all this. I continue to get an SSL-related error whenever I try to run my Python app: AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'HTTPSHandler' UPDATE: Just checked whether SSL actually installed as a result of those commands by typing this: $ python2.5 Python 2.5.5 (r255:77872, Apr 29 2010, 23:59:20) [GCC 4.4.1] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> import ssl Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named ssl >>> As you can see, SSL is still not installed, which explains the continuing App Engine error.   I can't get Intellij Idea 13.0 to compile my code against ASM 5.0.3 I have a multi-module Maven project. It compiles and installs successfully. Apparently com.google.findbugs:findbugs has a dependency on asm:asm:3.3 and I want to use org.ow2.asm:asm:5.0.3 to manipulate some bytecode. So in the parent pom.xml I exclude the asm:asm:3.3 dependencies from the classpath. This works fine when I run mvn install from the command line. I can't get the Build - Make Project menu selection to work in Intellij Idea.   I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal) and I recently installed Tor (32 bits) following the instructions on the Tor project's page. • Read Linux-formatted (ext3) EBS volume mounted on Windows Server 2008 instance

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 R2 instance set up in Amazon EC2. I've also got some Ubuntu instances on the same EC2 account. I'd like to be able to mount the EBS volume from one of the Ubuntu instances onto the Windows instance as an external drive and then access that drive from the Windows instance. I've looked at tools like ext2fsd and ext2 IFS, but these haven't worked (I couldn't get the former to work, and the latter says that it supports Windows 2008 but gives an error when I try to install it, saying that it only supports up to Windows 2003). I know that there are all kinds of tools to view Linux partitions and that there are filesystems that are compatible with both Linux and Windows, but neither of those options works here (I want to be able to attach and detach the Ubuntu volumes on command, rather than have a permanent partition, and Ubuntu EBS volumes are ext3 by default). Anybody know a good tool I should use?

• Apache has a 2GB file limit on a CIFS network drive?

  Setup: A Windows and a Ubuntu Server are hosted in VMware ESXi I have a a 6GB file on a Windows share The Windows share is mount on Ubuntu with smbmount A symlink pointing to the 6GB file is created in a public_html directory, which is readable by Apache The problem: wget gets an error Connection closed at byte 2130706432. Retrying. after downloading 2130706432 bytes (exactly 2032 MiB, and is the same every time) Apache returns 206 Partial Content without showing any errors in the log Same error even if I download from localhost Similar error when Firefox is used instead of wget No error if I md5sum or cp the file on Ubuntu, suggesting that smbmount and the Windows Server are OK with 6GB files. No error if Apache serve a 6GB file from the local disk, suggesting that Apache has no problems handling 6GB files. Any ideas why Apache/symlink/smbmount/Windows would cause an error when used together? How can I fix the problem? • Problems installing Linux to IDE connected compact flash card

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu on some hardware (Netcom NC-499 board that contains a Vortex86DX processor). I am trying to install to a compact flash card attached to the board via an IDE adaptor, the aim being that the board will boot up and simply treat the compact flash like a normal hard drive. The processor vendor claims support for Ubuntu 10.04 but I am having problems installing it onto the card. I have been trying using a USB CD-ROM drive and the standard .iso image from the ubuntu site (md5 checksum works out fine so no problem there) but I have had no success at all. I have been able to do this with Ubuntu 8.04 but with no other version (9.04 and 10.04 desktop and alternative discs all fail). My question is what other options are available to me to try and install this? I have googled myself apart trying to find out but other than a few sites describing USB based installs using flash memory sticks for very specific hardware, I have found no useful info at all. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

  On my Ubuntu 9.04 ("Karmic") laptop I suspect grub does not use the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. What happens on boot is that I see a blank screen and nothing happens. When I press ESC I see a boot list which is different from what I would expect from the menu.lst file. The menu lines are different and when I choose the first entry it does not use the kernel options that are in the first entry in menu.lst. Where do the entries that grub uses come from? How can I find out what happens, is there a log? I could not find anything in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg about grub using a menu.lst. How can I set it to work like expected? • What to do when launchpad is down?

  As I am writing this (Friday, November 8, 2013 at 9:59:18 PM EST) launchpad is down. Apparently there is a power failure (https://twitter.com/launchpadstatus/status/398980619880775680). I tried running sudo apt-get update on my Ubuntu install. However, I simply get stuck on this: Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net precise InRelease 100% [Waiting for headers] Being a Ubuntu newbie, I tried to point my sources.list file to a different source. I backed up the original sources.list and then deleted the entire file to start afresh. I then added the following lines to it: deb http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main deb-src http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main I figured that since I have a different mirror, there would be no problem updating. I was wrong. I get stuck at the same place. I have several questions: Why do I need to hit launchpad? I do not reference it in my sources.list file at all. Is this something where the mirror redirects me to launchpad? Is there a good article out there that I can read on how exactly this whole apt-get update thing works that will help me understand why it is hitting launchpad? Is there any way to get my Ubuntu to update while launchpad is down? Isn't there any redundancy for the launchpad servers?

  Hi My laptop has two os. one is windows vista. and other is Ubuntu. I am currently on ubuntu system, this is my primary OS. There are 4 partitions of my hard disk Windows OS Linux(Ubuntu OS) Data Now the problem part. The data partition is NTFS. I have mounted this partition on the location /media/windrive-a under ubuntu OS. A little while back i decided to delete the mounting of the data partition and i fired command rm -r /media/windrive-a/. To give me a shock; all my data on data drive is gone. Now, I know this is not the command to remove mounted partition. But I have committed the wrong. Is there any way i can get my data back. These are very important data for me. Please suggest.
