• Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter not recognized

  The Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter will not be recognized by my netbook (Ubuntu 14.04, Asus X201E). As I understand it, the drivers should already be built in to this version of Linux, but I tried a make/make install of the latest Realtek drivers (as mentioned on How do I install drivers for the Alfa AWUS036H USB wireless adapter?) and it didn't work. I then followed the advice of this thread (ALFA AWUS036NH driver) and did a make/make install of the most up-to-date backport of the drivers, but that didn't work. At this point I tried a series of commands from this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2187780) in an attempt to identify the problem, but at no point could I get the laptop to ever recognize the USB adapter. I have also troubleshot the USB cable itself, tried both the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the laptop, have never received an error message regarding a need to update the firmware, and have seemingly successfully installed all manner of variation of Realtek drivers which were supposed to make the adapter work. (I also tried to delete/clean up after each install, in the hope I wasn't making things worse.) Not sure what I should do next. Please let me know if I need to post any more information. • The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do

• Alternative printer driver for Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b?

  Is there a driver for a similar printer that also happens to work for the Fuji Xerox P205 b? I have tried the generic PCL 5 driver and the generic PostScript driver but they do not work. Any other suggestions? I'm on 10.10 (Maverick). Update The Fuji Xerox website has a Linux driver download as an .iso image. When you open the image you will see 3 drivers. One for HP UX for the PA-RISC and another for Solaris SPARC and one for RedHat x86, x86-64, etc. I picked the RedHat for my computer. It invokes RPM so install that first. The installation script crashes.

• Are there any good guides for making mods for Minecraft?

  I've been coding in Java for 5 months at work now, and having past experience with programming in other languages, modifying existing code at Uni etc. I feel like I want to get started on (read: continue learning to program by) modding with minecraft. I know what I need, but not exactly how to do so. I once saw some good guides on the minecraft forum, but they all explained how to write in java, hows different classes in the code work etc. I'm more interested in how you decompile the code, write your own separate from the main 'trunk' of minecraft and then package it to install with a tool like 'Magic Loader'. My issue with these guides is that they always relied on being in windows, but I'm primarily a linux user, and the guides on the forums only seemed to assume you were on a Windows box. So is there a good 'walkthrough' for modding for Minecraft? Especially one where it assumes or at least allows for the fact you are in linux?

• Update drivers for TL-WN851ND

  Today I bought a new PCI wireless card, TP-Link WN851ND, with Atheros AR9227 chipset. It has 2 antennas and is compatible with Wifi N so I thought it would improve the quality of the signal. But after install it on my computer the result is the opposite to expected. It doesn't connect to my network, while my old Wifi BG card connect without problems, I created an access point from my smartphone to try the card, and work, but is very slow loading pages. In Windows 7 works perfectly, so I think the problem is the driver. I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 3.2.0.31, is there a way to update the driver or I can apply a patch to improve the performance of the card? Otherwise, anyone know if there is a work in progress to improve compatibility with this chipset, or is it better to change the card and buy one with better driver compatibility. And finally, which wireless N compatible chipsets have good support under Linux/Ubuntu?

• Automatically kill a process if it exceeds a given amount of RAM

  I work on large-scale datasets. When testing new software, a script will sometimes sneak up on me, quickly grab all available RAM, and render my desktop unusable. I'd like a way to set a RAM limit for a process so that if it exceeds that amount, it will be killed automatically. A language-specific solution probably won't work, as I use all sorts of different tools (R, Perl, Python, Bash, etc). So is there some sort of process-monitor that will let me set a threshold amount of RAM and automatically kill a process if it uses more?

  When you interrupt the work on some code (be it because you have to work on something else or go on vacation or simply because it is the end of the day), once you close that Visual Studio project, what is your preferred way to remember what you want to do next when you start working on that code again. Do you set a Visual Studio bookmark or do write down something like // TODO: continue here next time? Maybe you have a special tag like // NEXT:? Do you put a sticky note on your monitor? Do you use a cool tool or Visual Studio plugin I should know? Do you have any personal trick that helps you find the place in your code where you left off the last time you worked on your code?

• My laptop hangs a lot

  My laptop is 1G ram and 120G hard-disk 1.68HZ processor , I've both Ubuntu and Windows7 on my machine For the last few days, my laptop, running Ubuntu 11.10 has been hanging a lot. A lot of the time, the touchpad won't work for unknown reasons, and I have to connect a USB mouse to be able to move the pointer on the screen. When browsing the web, the browser hangs a lot, and I have to restart the laptop to refresh it. I know that there is a hotkey to force Ubuntu to refresh when it hangs, but it doesn't work here.These problems happens only on ubuntu not on windows 7... How do I make Ubuntu light and fast? • Ubuntu 12.04 update + VirtualBox VM 4.1.14 r77440 - No input

  I can only enter my password with the keyboard and this is what I see after I login If I try to switch to a terminal with CtrlAlt+F1 I get this I don't have a clue how to fix this, or if it's even possible to fix this without access to a terminal. The recovery console does not work either. It opens, but keyboard input doesn't seem to be working for it either. Anybody had this happened? Update (next day) Keyboard input lets me do Alt+F2 and invoke a terminal, but I can't change focus to the terminal window that opens. Any tip on how to switch focus (Alt+Tab wont work) to the terminal window. Maybe looking at this you might have a clue what's going on, maybe there's no window manager loading?

• Looking for an ultra portable laptop for Ubuntu

  Hi, I'm in the market for a new laptop, and portability is important since I really only use it when I'm travelling to and from work - primarily for programming. I've been searching high and low for something like this: less than 2kg hopefully Intel i5 (but negotiable) NO dvd drive - just don't need it 4G ram either 7200rpm disk or SSD (ssd preferable) 13 inch screen not too pricey (MacBook Air is about $1700 AUD) available in Australia The Dell Inspiron 13z and Lenovo Edge 13 look close, but I've not found anything that says I'm not going to have a fight with compatibility. The MacBook Air 13 looks like the PERFECT hardware, but I'm afraid it will just be easier to run MacOS than Ubuntu. I want to stay with Ubuntu, but the MacBook Air is only $1700 so I'm in danger of becoming another apple fanboi if I can't find anything competitive. Or switch to MacOS? (It would be good to have a searchable database that had the full machine specs, and compatibility - I'm thinking about building something... but I don't have much time right now...) Thanks. UPDATE I went with a MacBook Air. The price/weight/power was just right. Everything else was either too pricy (i5) or too heavy, or underpowered (SU7300 1.3GHz). I have been using windows for work and school for over a year, and have about 100 gig of stored files (backed up of course) and some paid programs. Because of this, I really want my partitioning experience to go well. • How should I handle using two databases with a legacy PHP application?

  I have a legacy PHP application that was written in 2004 and uses MSSQL as a database backend. At this stage MSSQL is still supported by PHP but only just via a Microsoft driver. I have looked at converting to mysql via automated tools, which work quite well, but I have quite complex views which need a lot of individual work to convert. I don't have a great deal of time to do this. Many tools I wish to use and frameworks I would like to move the application to, don't support MSSQL, so I was considering adding new features using a new mysql database and wondered if anyone had opinions on the pros and cons of using two seperate database backends in a single application?

• Shelving code in TFS

  I'm pretty new at using TFS and I'd like to know how you or your team use the "shelve" function of tfs. We have the following guidelines in using TFS: - perform a "Get Latest" before you check in and try to build/compile - do not check in code that does not compile - at the end of the day, if your work is not complete/partially done, you should "shelve" your pending changes The first two make sense but I don't really get the last one. I asked my mgr and he said that its so he knows that you actually did some work for that day, which does kind of makes sense but still, I'm wondering what other teams use the "shelve" function for?

All the teams that entered our challenge did a ton of work and built really interesting integrations with Oracle Social Network, and I want to showcase their hard work and innovative ideas. The guys from HarQen built Nodal to provide a visual way to navigate your connections and conversations in Oracle Social Network and view relationships. Using Nodal, you can: Search through names and profiles in Oracle Social Network. Choose people and view their social graphs in a visually useful way. Expand nodes in the social graph and add that person’s social graph to the Nodal view for comparison. Move nodes around and lock them in place for easier viewing, using a physics engine for movement.   i'm currently working on a project in my spare time (mostly 3-4 hours from monday to friday, and up to 6 hours on sundays) and i've found redmine very useful to hold a record of development tasks. However, there are some stuff, specially when you are trying to prototype or brainstorm a redesign of a set of related classes, that the best tool that i've found for this still is a sheet of paper and a pen. I want to understand if maybe i'm just short of getting to work properly with existing tools. Do you find the use of a notebook or a journal an unavoidable part of software design? are there better alternatives? how do you organize pen-and-paper work and other software management tools like redmine?

  I'm looking to make a multi-player platforming game using UDK. I'm currently doing feasibility research, to make sure I will reasonably be able to do all of the technical things I want to do. The first major hurdle I've come across without being able to find as answer, are one-way platforms. That is to say, platforms through which a player can jump up, but not fall through (unless they choose to). These are commonly seen in games like Mario, Kirby and Smash Bros. Does anyone know how such a system would work within UDK? I can think of solutions that might work for single-player, but not multi.

• Where is the UIM notification area icon in Unity?

  When I was using Maverick, it was possible to switch the input method from a UIM indicator applet. Now that I have upgraded to Oneiric, I can't seem to switch the input method even when I open uim-im-switcher-gtk. This is necessary for me because I need to be able to switch back and forth between English and Tibetan and the keyboard shortcuts don't seem to work until after I've changed the input method from the panel first. Is there some way to get a UIM indicator on the Unity panel? This is a major regression for me and makes it impossible to do certain kinds of work in Ubuntu.

  can you please advise me why my first code attempt didn't work : public void listAllFiles() { for(String filename : files) { int position = 0; System.out.println(position + ": " + filename); position = position + 1; } } it kept printing position at 0 without iterating position but it seems to work after i did it this way: public void listAllFiles() { int position = 0; for(String filename : files) { System.out.println(position + ": " + filename); position = position + 1; } } I don't understand why the position + 1 was not being executed, is it because we are not meant to define variables inside for loops or am i missing something in my code.
