• Heroku Problem During Database Pull of Rails App: Mysql::Error MySQL server has gone away

  Attempting to pull my database from Heroku gives an error partway through the process (below). Using: Snow Leopard; heroku-1.8.2; taps-0.2.26; rails-2.3.5; mysql-5.1.42. Database is smallish, as you can see from the error message. Heroku tech support says it's a problem on my system, but offers nothing in the way of how to solve it. I've seen the issue reported before - for example here. How can I get around this problem? • C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

  EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong? • JQuery SelectToUISlider Issues

  Hopefully this hasn't been asked before as just a slider question, but I couldn't find an answer when already browsing questions. So, here goes: I have a SelectToUISlider (http://www.filamentgroup.com/lab/update_jquery_ui_slider_from_a_select_element_now_with_aria_support/) which is basically a modified JQuery UI Slider, and I'm using a range value. So, I start with one handle at 60, and another at 100 (scale from 0 to 100). What I want to do is click a radio button so that the 100 changes to a 0, and be able to change back to 100. I have been unsuccessful at changing it via JQuery selectors/javascript. However, when changing the selects to move the handles, this works, but the range appears not to follow if the second handle (at 100) moves to 0 behind the first handle (at 60). I'm thinking I might have to destroy the slider and rebuild it with the second handle (that starts as 100) become the first handle at 0 in this scenario (although I've tried destroying it and it doesn't seem to respond to that either.) • StaleDataException: access closed cursor

  In my application, after enough clicking around, I get this error: 06-08 19:47:59.967: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(2429): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to pause activity {com.MYAPP.app/com.MYAPP.app.MainActivity}: android.database.StaleDataException: Access closed cursor What I have is a Tab Activity (my MainActivity), which has a ListActivity as the contents for each tab. Inside the onCreate for each ListActivity I get a cursor that represents the data to be displayed in that list. The onListItemClick for each list also creates another activity, so clicking on an item in the list will show more information about that item in a new screen. It's inconsistent, but after enough clicking into these new activities, or going back to the ListView from a new activity, the program crashes. In searching around for a solution to my problem, I did stumble upon registerDataSetObserver, but it doesn't seem to be the whole answer. I am also having trouble finding documentation on it, so I'm not sure I fully understand it. I have a custom ListAdapter that both my ListViews use and have called registerDataSetObservers on the cursors there. I have attached the relevant code from one of my ListActivities and from my custom ListAdapter class. The ListActivity. • Android AlertDialog wait for result in calling activity

  I am trying to use an AlertDialog in my app to select the quantity of an item. The problem is that the activity that calls the AlertDialog doesn't wait for it to update the item before it adds it to the SQLite Database and change intents. At the moment, the QuantitySelector (AlertDialog) appears, then disappears straight away and changes the MealActivity class (which is just a ListView that reads from the database) through the intent change with an update to the database with quantity 0. I need the Activity to wait for the AlertDialog to close before it updates the database. What would be the correct way of implementing this? • Why does File::Slurp return a scalar when it should return a list?

  I am new to the File::Slurp module, and on my first test with it, it was not giving the results I was expecting. It took me a while to figure it out, so now I am interested in why I was seeing this certain behavior. My call to File::Slurp looked like this: my @array = read_file( $file ) || die "Cannot read $file\n"; I included the "die" part because I am used to doing that when opening files. My @array would always end up with the entire contents of the file in the first element of the array. Finally I took out the "|| die" section, and it started working as I expected. I looked in the File::Slurp module and it looks like it is set to croak if there is a problem, so I guess the proper way to do it is to allow File::Slurp to croak for you. But if it is not Monday, excel will generate 3 emails with only 1 attachment/link. My issue is that In my excel spreadsheet there is a tab called Actual and it is populated with a date. If this date within my excel spreadsheet is changed on a monday, to any other day of the week, my vba code will still treat the program as if it is Monday. I need an IF statement that will allow the 3 emails with the 3 attachements/links to generate given the date typed in on the Actual tab within my spreadsheet. I hope this isnt confusing.

• I'm looking for a reliable way to verify T-SQL stored procedures. Anybody got one?

  Hi all-- We're upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to 2008. Almost every database in the 2005 instance is set to 2000 compatibility mode, but we're jumping to 2008. Our testing is complete, but what we've learned is that we need to get faster at it. I've discovered some stored procedures that either SELECT data from missing tables or try to ORDER BY columns that don't exist. Wrapping the SQL to create the procedures in SET PARSEONLY ON and trapping errors in a try/catch only catches the invalid columns in the ORDER BYs. It does not find the error with the procedure selecting data from the missing table. SSMS 2008's intellisense, however, DOES find the issue, but I can still go ahead and successfully run the ALTER script for the procedure without it complaining. So, why can I even get away with creating a procedure that fails when it runs? Are there any tools out there that can do better than what I've tried?   I have been banging my head against the wall with this one for nearly a week now, and am no closer than I was the first day. I have a form that has 8 columns and a variable number of rows which I need to email to the client in a nicely formatted email. The form submits the needed fields as a multidimensional array. But, I can't find any examples that will generate that type of table! It seems like this should be something fairly straightforward, but I just can't locate an example that works the way I need it too.

  I am working on a system to find potential duplicates in our customers table (SQL 2005). I am using the built-in SOUNDEX value that our software computes when customers are added/updated, but I also implemented the double metaphone algorithm for better matching. This is the most-nested query I have created, and I can't help but think there is a better way to do it and I'd like to learn. In the inner-most query I am joining the customer table to the metaphone table I created, then finding customers that have identical pKey (primary phonetic key). I take that, union that with customers that have matching soundex values, and then proceed to score those matches with various text similarity functions. This is currently working, but I would also like to add a union of customers whose aKey (alternate phonetic key) match. This would be identical to "QUERY A" except to substitute on (c1Akey = c2Akey) for the join. However, when I attempt to include that, I get errors when I try to execute my query. Out of 103K customers, tt is currently generating a list of 8.5M potential matches (based on the phonetic codes) in 2.25 minutes, and then taking another 2 to score, rank and filter those down to about 3000. So I am happy with the performance, I just can't help but think there is a better way to structure this, and I need help adding the extra union condition. Thanks!

  The problem i've encountered is attempting to select rows from a database where 2 columns in that row align to specific pairs of data. IE selecting rows from data where id = 1 AND type = 'news'. Obviously, if it was 1 simple pair it would be easy, but the issue is we are selecting rows based on 100s of pair of data. I feel as if there must be some way to do this query without looping through the pairs and querying each individually. I'm hoping some SQL stackers can provide guidance. Here's a full code break down: Lets imagine that I have the following dataset where history_id is the primary key. I simplified the structure a bit regarding the dates for ease of reading. table: history history_id id type user_id date 1 1 news 1 5/1 2 1 news 1 5/1 3 1 photo 1 5/2 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 6 1 news 1 5/4 7 2 photo 1 5/4 8 2 photo 1 5/5 If the user wants to select rows from the database based on a date range we would take a subset of that data. SELECT history_id, id, type, user_id, date FROM history WHERE date BETWEEN '5/3' AND '5/5' Which returns the following dataset history_id id type user_id date 4 3 news 1 5/3 5 4 news 1 5/3 6 1 news 1 5/4 7 2 photo 1 5/4 8 2 photo 1 5/5 Now, using that subset of data I need to determine how many of those entries represent the first entry in the database for each type,id pairing. IE is row 4 the first time in the database that id: 3, type: news appears. So I use a with() min() query. In real code the two lists are programmatically generated from the result sets of our previous query, here I spelled them out for ease of reading. I figured one of the SQL gurus on this site might be able to spread some wisdom. In case I'm approaching this situation incorrectly, the gist of the whole routine is that the database stores all creations and edits in the same table. I need to track each users behavior and determine how many entries in the history table are edits or creations over a specific date range. Therefore I select all type:id pairs from the date range based on a user_id, and then for each pairing I determine if the user is responsible for the first that occurs in the database. If first, then creation else edit. Any assistance would be awesome.

  Hi guys,, need some help pls.. i have a PHP code here that lets a user send a message to multiple recipients using the "phonebook" (from database) as the main list. I used an array to temporarily hold all the desired recipients for the current user. So I have a two box, with each for displaying. The user will clicks the name from the phonebook lisy and clicks "Add" button to add on the temporary list on the other select box. • SSRS 2008 printing single page renders different for print

  I have a problem with SSRS 2008 reports rendering differently on the reporting server than the way it renders when you print the report. I’m trying to figure out to print a single page and have the print show that same records as I see on the report on the screen. As a test, I created a simple report with no headers or footers and just added a Tablix table to display the records (no groupings). My data set for this test displays 2 ¼ pages of records when I deploy it to our reporting services server and run it. If I click the print Icon and preview the report is 2 ¾ pages. I haven’t found anything searching on this so it makes me think it is something simple I’m missing. A basically want the report to render the same records on each page in Report Manager as it does when it prints, how do I accomplish this? (In response to answer posted by Chris)…If that is the case then it is disappointing. Customers are accustomed to WYSIWYG and will have a hard time understanding that, I imagine we will be getting a lot of support calls. This still leaves an issue. I tried using print preview and could not find any way to single out a page. If I select a page up front to print, or preview it renders different so I get different records. And if I preview the entire document, I can only print the entire document. You mentioned the Excel render; we have customers that will want that also. The problem I have found with Excel exports is that even a basic report winds up merging some cells and that messes up sorting. I’m going to try your tip about grouping to see if I can get a clean export to a page. It would have been nice if they would have created a property for certain controls like the tablix table called “ExcelSheet”. Then all you would have to do is give it a name and it would create a new sheet for each control with a name, the name becoming the sheet title. Thanks for the information you supplied it is very useful as I’m new to SSRS. If you know how I can Preview in print render and select individual pages to print from the render let me know. Update 02/19/2010 After testing this more I now realize it is just a bad design of Report managers print driver or a limitation because it is server based. The options work differently than Windows apps drivers, But I did find a work around. Here is the test I performed comparing Excel to Report Manager. I bring up a report that will render more than 1 page when printed. I then export to Excel, in Excel I select print preview. I can navigate the pages in preview and then select a single page like page 3. I can then print just page 3 without leaving print preview and it prints just like it rendered. I cannot do this using print in report manager. If I select print preview in report manager then try to print while in preview it always prints the entire document. However if I close out of print preview, I can then select page 3 and print it as rendered. It is just one additional step once you know what to do, but it took some time to figure it out.
