• What did I do wrong when installed this theme?

  I have a problem installing a theme for my Ubuntu, note that I am very new to it and probably messed something up. Still it seems to me that I did everything like it was stated in the INSTALL file. Theme: http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php/?content=140562 So I downloaded the *.zip package, unzipped it in home/.themes folder and changed Controls and Borders inside my theme preference. Still my result is pretty poor. You can look at the image, it looks nothing like what in the screenshot of the author. I also installed fonts running sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer and tried to install GTK2 engine as sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines-murrine gtk2-engines-pixbuf, but it showed that 0 files was modified since I already have it. Please tell me what did I did wrong so I can fix that :) (It seems that I can't upload images yet, no rep. I can give you link tho) http://postimage.org/image/1zhibxx5w/full/

• How to change mimetype image for PSD file (Photoshop)?

  Following this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddingMimeTypes, I first typed a command to discover the mimetype for psd extension ~$ grep 'psd' /etc/mime.types image/x-photoshop psd Then I took Photoshop CS5 SVG image from Wikipedia and renamed it to image-x-photoshop.svg. Then I copied the file to the folder /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable via command sudo cp image-x-photoshop.svg /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/image-x-photoshop.svg Loogged out, logged in, but the icon for the .psd files is still unchanged. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I use Ubuntu 10.10. Thanks in advance

• What is a good network for full-page rich ads?

  I'm currently developing a website where users will be able to upload content. I would like to be able to show a full-page ad whenever someone tries to view the content. The ad should take up most of the screen, and I should be able to have a "continue to the content --" link at the top. Preferably, I want something like what is currently on Forbes (if you haven't seen it, here: http://www.forbes.com/fdc/welcome.shtml but with an ad in the black area). • Cannot authenticate without a password

  This question has been asked hundreds of times before, but I did not see any relevant answer so I will repost. Sorry if there is any helpful answer, please don't vote down but please link to the question(s) with such answers. The problem can be reproduced as follows: When I remove the password of an administrator account, "Log In without Password", I cannot use that account to authenticate. When I do something that requires authentication, I cannot use an admin without a password to authenticate. If I leave the password box blank without a password while choosing a non-password admin, authentication fails (in terminal or in GUI). How to fix this problem?

• Accented characters representation in the URL

  We have support for various languages in our website, including Spanish, French and Swedish. For now, the links in the site are NOT encoded before sent to the browser, sending the real accented chars (if such exists, i.e. href="www.(dot)example(dot)com/héllo.html") and not their HEX representation. This works & looks good on all browsers, including Chrome, FF and IE. However, we care great deal about SEO. We got this tip that encoding the links before sending them to the browser (so instead of linking to http://www.example.com/héllo, we will link to http://www.example.com/h%E9llo) will improve the way search engines will 'understand' the links and the keywords in the URL. This involves some work at our side, so we wanted to know if there's truth in that tip, but couldn't find anything addressing this issue.

• nagios3 Error: Could not read object configuration data!

  I have a brand new install of nagios3 on ubuntu 12.04. After I log in to the web interface and click any link I get the error: Error: Could not read object configuration data! Here are some things you should check in order to resolve this error: Verify configuration options using the -v command-line option to check for errors. Check the Nagios log file for messages relating to startup or status data errors. I ran it with the -v option and it reported no errors: Total Warnings: 0 Total Errors: 0 Things look okay - No serious problems were detected during the pre-flight check The nagios log and apache error log and debug log all have nothing regarding this. Does anyone know how to turn on logging that will give me some kind of useful error? Or if anyone knows how to fix this specific problem without additional logging, I guess that's okay too. Thanks!

  Earlier this year we showed you how an LED POV staff could be used to visualize network data. This build takes it to another level and allows you to imprint entire words and images into photos. Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff.   When learning about polymorphism you commonly see something like this class Base { int prv_member; virtual void fn(){} } class Derived : Base { int more_data; virtual void fn(){} } What is upcasting or downcasting? Is (Derived*)base_ptr; an upcast or downcast? I call it upcast because you are going away from the base into something more specific. Other people told me it is a downcast because you are going down a hierarchy into something specific with the top being the root. But other people seem to call it what i call it. When converting a base ptr to a derived ptr is it called upcasting or downcasting? and if someone can link to an official source or explain why its called that than great.

  There are so many (good) programming blogs out there. Some of them are consistent in what they post - as in they stick to programming topics. Some of them occasionally post on other unrelated topics. Also, not every programming post might be relevant to me. I might have read one good post once, and not wishing to miss any future good ones - subscribed to the blog. Subscribing to too many blog feeds usually leads to just skimming through all of them (which takes time as well). Another option might be to subscribe to aggregators, like Hacker News - but that too has a huge rate of link accumulation. How do you manage if you wish to keep up with the programming blogosphere and still maintain a good signal to noise ratio?

• Disable printing extraneous job info when I print a images

  As of 10/11/12 I this is still a problem. Peterling, that link you gave me was for Windows. Not Ubuntu. I need to know how to do this in Ubuntu. Whenever I print off an image, before the actual image prints, I get these weird "print job" sheets. (I named them that, because I don't know what else to call them.) • Google doesn't index a subdomain. What can be the problem and what can be done?

  Hi! I have a domain, let's call it example.com, which has a subdomain, games.example.com. I maintain a games forum using phpbbseo which is located at games.example.com/forum. The problem is that the forum is not being crawled. I used Google's webmaster tools and tested that the page is seen by google. P.S. There is a link from games.example.com to games.example.com/forum. What can I do? How can I make google crawl my forum?

• Writing jenkins plugin: where is the documentation?

  On my current project we're using Jenkins to monitor our builds. Now they want me to write a Jenkins plugin to add some more monitoring parameters. I've taken a look at how the status monitor plugin works, and I can't figure some things out. I've tried to look for documentation for writing a plugin, but that seems to be sorely lacking. (the site only mentions how to generate the base project, and refers to a tutorial that's not that informative) What I'm trying to do is just add some options to each build, add a link, and a monitoring page. Adding to the main page is apparently done by adding the action, but I'm still trying to figure out the rest. And how it all ties in. Does anyone have any pointers, or a place where I can find some decent documentation?

• Pendrive USB Ubuntu installation - black screen on boot

  I see many posts on this, but no solution. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my 16GB USB flash drive using this official link using their tool Universal USB Installer. Installation to USB went fine so I set my laptop to boot from USB and the Ubuntu was recognized. I saw the usual boot screen and I chose option "Run Ubuntu from this USB". The boot process started and after 5-6 seconds the screen goes black and non-responsive. I thought that it hang on X loading so I tried switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+F1-6 but the system did not respond. Why is this happening? Am I doing something wrong? PS. My laptop is HP Pavillion G6

  I am trying to make my first app for sale, I would like to ask some questions for those who have already sold their software: Have you used a Framework/Lib whose LGPL License? if yes, what are the impressions of your customers? for example, if your customers/ competitors from the market reveal technology/secrets that you used in your solution (as LGPL requires that you make a Dynamic Link (.DLL) for your libs and you clearly tell the use of a Lib/Framework ...). Full story: For my project, I used a framework LGPL/commercial (Dual License) the second one it was too expensive (about 3000 USD) which pushed me to use LGPL.. however I still concerned.. That is why I ask for advise and especially motivations... Please do not hesitate to participate... Thanks in advance.

• installing ubuntu 10.04 over top 11.04

  im looking to install 10.04 over top the 11.04 partition, it wouldnt let. keeps giving me a "root file system not found" error ever time i manually select partition. (i have a win7 partition) 11.04 popped up after upgrade that my hardware isnt supported for unity. and i cant boot into it, hangs up on purple screen right after boot menu. if anyone can post a link to a how to guide or put it on here, would be great? im trying to take advantage of my nvidia geforce gt 120m (its a laptop) to play around with cuda/c++ programming!
