• How can I drag and drop files into the Ubuntu One bookmark in Nautilus?

  I have a bookmark to my Ubuntu-One folder in the sidebar of Nautilus, it would seem logical that it would be possible to drag and drop files and folders on top of this bookmark and have the dropped items copied to the Ubuntu-One folder to be synced to the cloud. However this does not happen, I can drop files and folders onto the shortcuts underneath "Computer" in the Nautilus sidebar but not onto anything that is a bookmark. Is it possible to change this behaviour so that it is possible? Or failing that are there any possible workarounds to get a similar result?

• How to use PostgreSQL on AWS - Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm extremely new to cloud-computing, Linux, and PostgreSQL, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I've managed to create an m1.large instance running Ubuntu 11.10, connect via Putty SSH, and install PostgreSQL (sudo apt-get install postgresql), but that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to run several python web-scraping scripts that I've written on this instance (so as not to eat up all of our bandwidth (smaller company at the moment)) and insert the scraped data into a PostgreSQL table on the instance and later retrieve that data to store on our local server (as I've heard AWS EBS is unreliable and I don't want to take chances). How can I configure PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? How can I access the data from my machine? I currently use PgAdmin3 to manage PosgreSQL on our local server. Can I use this same interface to manage PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? Any suggestions, solutions, links, etc is greatly appreciated. And again, if this is a dumb question, I apologize.

• Grouping DLL's for use in Executable

  Is there a way to group a bunch of DLL's and still use them at run time (not zipped up). Sorry this question sounds terse and stupid, but I'm not sure what more to ask. I'll explain the situation though: We've had two standalone Windows Applications and now one of our Applications has swelled to such ungainly proportions that the other application cannot run outside of the scope of the first app. We want to maintain some of the encapsulation we had while letting the smaller program in on some of the bigger program's features. There is no problem in running the application, other than we don't want to send out all the 20-30 DLL's that the smaller project has.

When listing the apps, it fills the list in an automatic process, when reaching or is near to reach the end. My question is: How is that written in iPhone applications.   I'm reading a book about programming ASP.NET in C#. The book makes the following comment: Previous editions of this book tackled web services, a feature that allows you to create code routines that can be called by other applications over the Internet.Web services are more interesting when considering rich client development (because they allow you to give web features to ordinary desktop applications),and they’re in the process of being replaced by a new technology known as WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). For those reasons, web services aren’t covered in this book.However,if you want to branch out and explore the web service world,you can download the web service chapters from the previous edition of this book from the book’s download page.The information in these chapters still applies to ASP.NET 3.5,because the web service feature hasn’t changed. Can someone offer, in "layman's terms" what exactly a web service is and if, indeed, they are being replaced, at least in .Net, with WCF? What would be a practical example of a web service? • Testing what is happening inside your BizTalk solution

  As BizTalk developers we all know that one of the common challenges is how to test your BizTalk solution once it is deployed to BizTalk. Hopefully most of us are using the BizUnit framework for testing, but we still have the limitation that it's a very Black Box test. I have put together a sample and video to show a technique where I'm using the Logging Framework from the BizTalk CAT Team at Microsoft and where by BizUnit test is able to make assertions against the instrumentation going through the framework. This means that I can test for things happening such as the fact a component was executed or which branch of an orchestration was executed by simply using my normal instrumented code. • Will iPhone OS4 make your life easier or harder as a lone app developer?

  I am interested to hear what people feel about the new iPhone OS4 release. It is obviously very exciting having access to all the new features, apparently (from apple.com) it has over 1500 new APIs. My original thoughts were "Wow, this is awesome", and I suppose it is. I was just getting comfortable with OS 3.2 development though, and now there is a raft of additional stuff to learn in order to keep up with the pack. So I am feeling quite frustrated! Do you think, when working as an individual app developer, having access to these additional features would improve your applications or just water down the quality? I guess being giving the opportunity to improve applications and provide better features should be welcomed. I think frustration comes from struggling to keep up with the continuous changes, but thats the industry we are in I suppose! Any thoughts/comments?

• OS X Dock API? Retrieve OS X active application's icon with badges and other modifications.

  Is there an API for retrieving the icons of the currently open apps on Mac OS X? I am trying to retrieve all the icons of the active applications along with any badges on top of the application (i.e. number of new messages in mail, or current download rate in Transmission). Is there some sort of Dock API? The only mention of an OSX API for retrieving information about currently active applications I have been able to find is the Process Manager API, which does not mention the ability to poll the dock or retrieve icon data.

  I'm a bit confused about all this OAuth bruhaha in the sense that all the examples I can find are for web applications and none of them for desktop applications. I understand the Web application work flow, but that includes some redirections between the web app and twitter. How does one do this in an desktop application? How does the redirects work? Should I have to include a Web Browser object? Is there a way to go around this? Could anyone point me to resources instead of a full blown solution please? Thanks

  When I try to use iptables command on one of my Rackspace cloud server, I'm getting the following error. In an attempt to apply iptables rules with iptables-apply -t 120 /etc/iptables.rules and iptables-restore < /etc/iptables.rules I got the next error: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.35.4-rscloud/modules.dep: No such file or directory iptables-restore v1.4.4: iptables-restore: unable to initialize table 'filter' Error occurred at line: 2 Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information. • What information do you capture your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • Will the app file be sync from dmgr side after we remove it from installedApps path in Websphere?

  do you know whether the app file will be sync from dmgr side and regenerated after we remove it from installedApps path? i've got one issue recently from customer. That is, they uploaded one image file into WASNode installedApps app path manually. Afterwards, they removed that file manually again from installedApps app path. But after restarting the Application server process, that file has been regenerated under same installedApps path. So i suspect that file maybe has been resync from dmgr node, like app file under applications folder. However, first of all, i don't see that image file within application ear file from DMGR applications folder. Moreover, i made a test myself, if i deleted file from installedApps app path, that file never be regenerated any more even though the node sync completed. So does anybody know why? • Using AWS or Azure, what to do about emails?

  I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?

• Microsoft Sync. Framework with Azure on iOS

  A bit of a revelation this evening. I discovered something obvious, but missing from my understanding of the brilliant iOS example that ships with the Sync. Framework 4.0CTP It seems that on the server side if a record is edited, correctly only the fields that are modified gets sent down to your device (in my case an iPad). I was previously just blindly assuming that I'd get all fields down.   Mac OS X's window manager is composed of: Applications Windows Tabs By default on OS X, you can cycle over applications with the famous ?? shortcut. In addition to this, I use a little utility called Witch which enables cycling (graphically) over windows too(I've defined it on ??). Unfortunately, it does not currently support tabs cycling... Would you have any suggestion for this? I know I already can ^? for this, but I'm looking for a graphical utility where you are not blind during cycling. Thank you.
